While camp registration fees have increased this year due to escalating operation costs, the sessions are still very affordable
in comparison to other sleepaway camps in Texas. This year an installment payment plan is offered if registration is completed early.

Fun Day Fiesta Texas tickets will be available soon
SAN ANTONIO – Hermann Sons Life will again provide discounted tickets for a fun day at Six Flags Fiesta Texas this summer, but families can now attend on a day of their own choosing during a designated two-week period.
Due to increasingly busy summer schedules, Member Benefits Vice President Cecily Kelly explains the change will allow more families to be able to take advantage of the discounted amusement park tickets.
“As many families know, due to summer vacations, sports, work and other activities, it has become increasingly difficult to attend scheduled summer events,” Cecily said. “We’re hoping the change will help our busy families enjoy an affordable fun day that is a better fit for their schedules.”
Online tickets sales and dates will be available soon. Stay tuned!

NIOSA festival benefits Conservation Society of San Antonio
SAN ANTONIO – “A Night In Old San Antonio®” (NIOSA®)” – a fournight festival that celebrates the city’s diverse cultural legacy – will be held April 29-May 2 from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. nightly during Fiesta San Antonio® in the heart of downtown.
Celebrating its 77th presentation in 2025, NIOSA is the top fundraiser for historic preservation in the nation. It is solely produced by and benefits The Conservation Society of San Antonio (one of the nation’s oldest and most active historic preservation organizations).
Through the magic of 155 plus food, drink and atmosphere booths and entertainment stages, continuous live musical acts, decorations, souvenirs and many dedicated volunteers, NIOSA brings the city’s heritage alive in its 14 cultural areas. San Antonians have consistently voted NIOSA as their favorite event; it was listed the #1 Fiesta event by San Antonio Current.
NIOSA’s three medals are on sale at NIOSA office, 227 S. Presa, through April 28; and at Monarch
Trophy Studio and/or its website at https://mtsawards.com/pages/ fiesta-medal-marketplace.
All of NIOSA – including the food booths – is run by volunteers, from the NIOSA chairman Lisa Pierce to the booth workers.
Many are second or third generations of a family to “man” a NIOSA booth. Volunteers are welcome and can help in the NIOSA office, during staging for the week leading to NIOSA, volunteering in a booth during NIOSA and after NIOSA as we pack up. Individuals; groups of volunteers from corporations or non-profits; and/or those needing service hours are MORE than welcome; we supply tools and training.
If you are a new volunteer, please contact NIOSA at 210 2265188 or niosa@niosa.org
On average, NIOSA gives the Society over $1 million annually to fund the Society’s preservation of historic properties and parks and grants to the public to maintain or restore historic properties. NIOSA invests well over $1 million in our community by using local suppliers and paper goods. In addition,
NIOSA pays nearly $1 million to lease La Villita, pay for SAPD security, obtain health, fire and electrical permits and donate to the La Villita restorations fund.

Spring good time to review finances MYGA coming soon!
By TERESA SAATHOFF Vice President of Sales Spring Cleaning
As the seasons change, and we think about spring cleaning and decluttering our homes – it is also the perfect time to take stock of your financial well-being. One area often overlooked is life insurance and annuities. Just as you organize your home, reviewing your policies ensures they align with your current needs and future goals.
Why review your Life Insurance and Annuities?
Life changes over time, and so do your financial responsibilities. Major life events such as marriage, having children, buying a home or retirement can impact your insurance needs. By reviewing your Hermann Sons Life policies annually, you can ensure
they still provide the right coverage for your loved ones.
Spring cleaning checklist for your policies:
1. Review your coverage amounts
• Does your life insurance still provide enough protection for your family?
• Have you accumulated more assets or taken on new financial obligations?
2. Update beneficiaries
• Have there been any changes in your family, such as marriage, divorce or birth of a child?
• Make sure your beneficiaries are up to date to avoid complications later.
3. Evaluate policy types
• Do you have the right type of life insurance – term or whole life permanent coverage?
• If you own annuities, are they
still aligned with your retirement goals?
4. Assess your Annuity performance
• If you have an annuity, review its performance and payout.
• Determine if it still aligns with your retirement timeline and income needs.
A fresh start for your financial future:
Spring is a great time to take control of your financial security. By reviewing your life insurance and annuity policies, you ensure your loved ones are protected and your financial future is on track.
If you need help assessing your coverage, Hermann Sons Life is here to guide you through the process. Contact us today for a policy review and start the spring season with peace of mind.

A MYGA is a type of fixed annuity that provides a guaranteed interest rate for a set number of years. It is similar to a certificate of deposit (CD) but is offered by insurance companies instead of banks.
Key features of a MYGA:
• Guaranteed interest rate –your money grows at a fixed rate for the duration of the contract, regardless of market conditions.
• Tax-deferred growth – Interest earned is not taxed until you withdraw funds.
• Various term lengths –

Camp News
Early camp registration off to a great start
By IAN BRASSETT Executive Camp Director
Greetings from Comfort!
In rolling out the new camp program, I made a couple of errors in announcements and would like to correct those right off the bat and apologize for any inconvenience:
• The correct dates for MiniCamp are Sunday, Aug. 3, through Wednesday, Aug. 6.
• The member fee for the ten-day camp session is $975 and includes a $20 Camp Store voucher.
• On the schedule I missed dinner! We will be serving the campers dinner every day!
It’s been an incredibly busy fall and winter so far and I’m loving it! We opened enrollment two months earlier than previous years and it seems you can’t wait to get started! We’re super excited about the high enrollment number and look forward to a full camp in 2025!
Be sure to sign up soon! Through the new CampBrain registration system, a payment plan is available with a deposit and three equal payments in March, April and May.
Returning Staff
The top priority for any camp is its staff. Even with some changes this year, what makes the camp is the people – the campers and the staff and Hermann Sons Life has the best!
We’re very lucky that in 2025 all staff are returning, and our senior staff has never been stronger. Webster and I, “Gunner,” will be directing the summer camp with Coconut and pAnIc working as assistant directors. Awesome!
With Crockett, Lil’ Bird, Big Wig, Sheperd, Megatron and Applejax taking on senior positions, our senior staff is incredible.
Returning staff members for the girls’ dorms are some of our campers’ favorites – Kiwi, WipeOut, Froggy Princess, Dominos, Tangled, Shutterbug, 9 to 5,

Wednesday, March 26 • 7 p.m.
Stitch, Miss, Ma’am, Zen, Oilspill, Barnacles, Overflow, Snooze, Ultra, Bubbles, Speedie, Twitch, Hercules, Beetles, UFO and more! What a great time to be a Hermann Sons Life camper!
The boys’ returning staffers are just as strong – Static, Flash, Machine, IceMan, PanFried, Happy Feet, Shield, Rango, Spooky, Morse Code, Jersey, Gizmo, Sol, Tetris and Bubbles.
The kitchen and maintenance staff are also very strong with returning staff members in all shifts and four returning cooks!
Our campers are in great hands when it comes to our medical team – Medic Mike, Medic Mum, Nurse Jennifer, Nurse Cailin and Nurse Brittney are all committed to return to camp in 2025 and are a great team.
CITs
Participating in our CIT program is the perfect way to become a counselor at HSLC! All the senior staff members this summer are former campers who worked through the program becoming counselors, then senior counselors, assistant directors and then directors. The program is designed for campers who will be 15 (CIT1) or 16 (CIT-2) by Sept. 1, 2025. Please go to our brand-new website, hermannsonslife.org
– Member Benefits – Camp to complete an application and set up an interview with me. There is already a waiting list for Session 2, CIT-2s in the girls’ dorms. Redneck Water Park Fancy Fridays are great days
at camp! We sleep in an extra hour due to the extended curfew on Thursday night for the dance. We start the day off with pj breakfast and “French FRIESday” – French toast and French fries for breakfast while showing cartoons!
The morning is spent either trying to break records in the “Bragging Rights” event or participating in crafts, swimming, ga-ga or rocket launch! In Bragging Rights, campers try to break 30 records set by the counselors (during staff development). We offer some of these activities during electives (afternoon free choice) to allow our campers to practice.
The Redneck Water Park activity is a great way to end the week. Since we are not utilizing the Riverside site this year and the Hilltop site doesn’t have any hills to slide down, a waterslide will be used this summer. Thank you to Lone Oak Lodge for coming to the rescue and purchasing a 16-foot water slide for the camp! They also purchased a slip n’ slide to really boost our afternoon fun! If your lodge would like to help the camp with a donation, please do not hesitate to contact me, Ian, at 830-995-3223.
Speaking of helping out –Volunteer Workday
The annual Volunteer Workday is March 15. This is a great opportunity for the Hermann Sons Life community to give back and help camp prepare for an incredible summer! There is lots to do – setting up nets,
painting, moving stuff from one place to another, pressure washing and more! Eight hours of community service can be earned (14+). Community service hours and helping your camp – that’s a win-win! The workday is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Breakfast will be provided from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. and lunch will be provided.
Daily activities
We’re excited to offer all the favorite activities this summer and now as a coed camp can expand on them. We’ll be offering fishing, kayaking, challenge course, zip line, climbing and the giant swing to the existing list of incredible electives like crafts, free swim, manis and pedis, Bragging Rights practice, archery, riflery, hiking, all of the sports, line dancing and so much more.
We offer more than 30 fun activities throughout the week with at least 12-15 choices per day. The addition of fishing, kayaking and the adventure activities will also make sure that the popular traditional activities will always be available every week.
Spirit stick
Since camp will be coed this summer, we realized we’ll need new dorm songs. The winners of the spirit stick will get a pizza party after the awards presentation on Friday nights! Exciting! I’ll be discussing the coed camp during the upcoming Zoom meeting!
Zoom meeting
I will host a Zoom meeting on March 26 at 7 p.m. to discuss all the exciting changes in 2025! Camp will remain very similar to previous years and will continue to include favorites such as camp songs, music during meals, Who has Hermann?
Camper of the Day recognition, Grateful Circles, taps and stargazing all for an incredible summer camp experience.
Open House
Camp Open House will be
held June 7 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is an especially great opportunity for new campers. Returning Riverside campers will have the opportunity to see the awesome cabins at the Hilltop site and the spacious dining hall. Bring your friends and families for a great day of swimming, challenge course, archery, dance, crafts, tours and more! We’re excited to see you! Night-time activities
Sunday – We do a rotation that includes swimming, ga-ga, dodgeball and kickball. At the end of the night, campers gather for a campfire with s’mores, counselor skits and introductions.
Monday – Big Brown Bag! Several of the campers’ favorite camp games are in a bag and a drawing is held at lunch! Activities include gold rush, counselor hunt, the jungle, scavenger hunt, wanted board, movie night, grab bag skits and many more.
Tuesday – Game night! This is a popular activity with the campers and for 2025 Game Night will be expanded and will feature new games and new surprises for our campers.
Wednesday – Capture the Flag game and pool party. We’re doubling up the fun on Wednesday night starting with the boys’ favorite evening activity, capture the flag. After running around, we’re going to chill with a pool party complete with music, limbo contests, watermelon and ga-ga.
Thursday – The dance is held. This activity begins with the manis and pedis and hair! Then we have the Big Brother and Big Sister activity before the dance, that is extended this year, and will be held in the dining hall! We’re excited!
Friday night – As mentioned previously, Fancy Fridays are great days at camp. To round off the fun, we have a lip synch night along with the award presentations!

Applicants must be members for a minimum of five years and in good standing. High school grades have no bearing on selection of re-
cipients, only the students’ desire to better themselves.
Applicants must complete an online application, and submit an essay titled, “What Hermann Sons Life Means to Me” and two photos of themselves.
More details and the application are available on the Hermann Sons Life website, hermannsonslife.org – go to Member Benefits – Scholarships.
Nominations close March 15 for agent award
SAN ANTONIO – The nomination deadline for the Leroy Muehlstein Memorial Award for the Agent Fraternalist of the Year is March 15.
President/CEO Robin Czarnek established the award in August 2022 in honor of the past Grand President.
“The award recognizes an agent each year that exhibits what it means to be not only a Hermann Sons Life member, but a humanitarian,” Robin said. All members are invited to
nominate a deserving agent.
A fillable nomination form is available on the home page of the website, hermannsonslife.org.
Email form to: kathrynm@hermannsonslife.org or mail to: Sales Department, Hermann Sons Life Home Office, P.O. Box 1941, San Antonio, TX 78297-1941, Attn: Kathryn Mutchler.
“Mr. Muehlstein exemplified the true spirit of fraternalism, and it’s our blessing to be able to
Howie’s Happenings
carry on his good works through our agents,” Robin said. “Mr. Muehlstein was the ultimate fraternalist who lived life every day by the Hermann Sons Life motto of “Friendship, Love and Loyalty.” Leroy began his Hermann Sons Life journey in 1955 as a member of Harmonia Lodge and served as president of his lodge and was elected Grand President in 1989. He served as Grand President until 2009, longer than any other Grand President.
Howie and Beaus’ antics keep them on naughty list
By ROBIN CZARNEK President and CEO
Howie and Beau have been making regular appearances on the naughty list this month. Recently, I was on the hunt for pretzel rolls to make sandwiches and discovered they’d been removed from the counter, taken through the doggie door and enjoyed by the boys all without me hearing a sound. Needless to say, dinner plans changed quickly!
Then, while we were at a lodge meeting, the boys somehow managed to get their favorites treats, Soft & Chewy Milk Bones, down from the shelf and also through the doggie door. Not only did they get this plastic tub through the doggie door but managed to unscrew the lid and eat every treat! We cannot figure out how they were able to get that tub through the door. I am thinking we need a camera to capture their antics! We’re pretty sure Beau was the culprit, so we’re thinking we should have called him Houdini with the tricks he is able to accomplish. No matter how secure we think we have things, we usually underestimate their ability to get into things. We can’t get them to stop chewing up their beds, so we purchased new canvas beds. To say they prefer our new couch is an understatement, not so sure that was money well spent.
The boys had a lot of visitors this month, my mom’s dog,
hotk9rescue@yahoo.com to learn more.
Cookie, as well as Krypto and Oakley. Cookie is a tiny terrier that likely doesn’t even weigh 10 pounds, but she ruled the roost and made sure the boys knew she was in charge. They ran like maniacs with Krypto and Oakley and slept the whole next day to recuperate…just not on their new beds.
The boys want to introduce you to their adorable friend, Holly. They just don’t come any sweeter than Miss Holly. She loves her toys and her eyes sparkle when she gets to pick them out. Holly has those deep, soulful eyes that are full of curiosity and warmth, making her impossible to resist. Not to mention she has one ear that flops over slightly while the other stands taller giving her a mischievous and unique look. I
would have a hard time saying no to Holly!
If you’re interested in meeting Holly or any of the other pups at HOTK9, please email hotk9rescue@yahoo.com to schedule a visit. HOTK9 is a 501(c)(3) no-kill
canine shelter dedicated to rescu ing pups in need.
For more information and to view the amazing dogs available for adoption, check out Heart of Texas SPCA/HOTK9 Rescue on Facebook or visit www.heartof-
texasspca.com. You’ll also find details about their adoption events, where you can meet more wonderful pups. Keep in mind that HOTK9 Rescue is a volunteer-run organization, so email is the best way to reach them.
Holly is a sweet pup that loves playing with her toys. She needs a forever home. Email
Krypto was a recent visitor. He loves cuddling with “mom and dad” Garrett and Haley Czarnek.
Howie and Beau love to play tugof-war.
Howie loves car rides with “Papa” Dave.
Howie puts his tough face on but fools no one!

Columbia announces general meeting, Spring Fling
DALLAS – Hello to all from Columbia Lodge. Please plan to attend the General Meeting at the hall on Sunday, March 16, at 2 p.m. There will be bylaw changes to vote on followed by dinner provided by the Home Association.
Spring Fling is set for March 28-30. The hall will host nationally and internationally acclaimed instructors Laura Keat and Jeremy Otth. Both share their knowledge of swing dances to keep dance alive as it is an art that can easily be lost (not
written down as music often is or guarded in a museum like a painting or sculpture).
Laura and Jeremy specialize in teaching balboa, the Lindy Hop and Collegiate Shag. Balboa is an upbeat dance where the dancers are close and perform intricate and shuffling footwork, perfect for dancing in a crowded speakeasy during the jazz age.
The Lindy Hop originated in Harlem’s Black community. As the dance evolved, it influenced the jazz musicians of the time to
accommodate the dancers’ new moves and steps. It was revived in the 1980s after a decline during WWII. It’s going strong now. Collegiate Shag is another close couple style that involves incredibly fast bouncing or hopping on the balls of the feet. It creates a beautiful effect as the dancers appear to be floating above the floor. And all these dance styles have lots of variations and nuances to keep them interesting and challenging to students.

Siemering holds Hermann Sons Cemetery workday
SAN ANTONIO – Siemering Lodge members rolled up their sleeves and got to work at the historic Hermann Sons Cemetery in early February making sure it remains a place of honor and remembrance. With rakes in hand and a little elbow grease, we cleared debris and trimmed back overgrowth.
It wasn’t just a workday – it was a reminder of the strong community we’ve built. Taking part in the cleanup effort were Cody Crislip, Mark Lee, Ed Shadrack, Gregory Ripps, Christian Lee and Airen Burke. While we worked, an unexpected but welcome visitor arrived, a former member from over 40 years ago who offered to help with the mowing and upkeep moving forward. It’s moments like these that show
just how deep our fraternal ties run.
One of the familiar faces out there was Cody Crislip. Cody isn’t just a Hermann Sons Life member – he’s a historian, entrepreneur and reenactor known for his uncanny resemblance to Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith. He serves as 3rd Lt. Commander of the Texas Division Sons of Confederate Veterans and helps keep Texas history alive through education and reenactments.
When he’s not in period uniform, Cody runs Small Hamster Hosting, his own web development and hosting business. If you’ve ever visited SiemeringLodge.com, you’ve already seen his work in action. He’s the one keeping our lodge’s online pres-
ence running smoothly. Every cleanup, every gathering and every handshake strengthens our lodge and the legacy we’re committed to preserving.
