President's Message
Members, community are the heartbeat of our organization
By ROBIN CZARNEK President and CEO
SAN ANTONIO – As the 20242025 dance season comes to a close and camp season ramps up, we’re reminded once again about the heartbeat of our organization…our members and community that make our youth programs and community service happen
Our dance teachers have been gathering not only to teach the next generation of dancers but to build lifelong friendships Parents, grandparents, siblings, and friends have filled community halls to attend recitals, cheering on dancers and reconnecting with old friends, proving that Hermann Sons Life is more than an organization, it’s a family
Meanwhile, our Home Office was honored to host NIOSA volunteers as they prepared for
ROBIN CZARNEK President and CEO
San Antonio’s beloved Fiesta celebration by making flowers and decorations for their floats The sounds of laughter, the rustle of tissue paper, and the spirit of volunteerism brought more color and camaraderie to the Home

SAN ANTONIO – Hermann Sons Life is accepting donations for the Crabapple Fire Relief Fund under the OneStar Foundation

gency aid, essential supplies and long-term recovery assistance

Lodge Reports
Office This partnership is a reminder that when community groups come together, beautiful things blossom . If you haven’t had a chance to visit NIOSA, it’s a lively part of Fiesta with live music, great food and vendors throughout We’re thrilled to be able to help in our small way in making Fiesta come alive and we look forward to welcoming NIOSA volunteers back for the next season
We also celebrate the awarding of college scholarships this month – an investment in the future of our youth, made possible by the generosity of our members and the generations that came before The scholarship recipients are not only scholars; many are also campers, dancers and volunteers who’ve grown within our society and are now poised to carry our mission for-
ward
What a spring it’s been in San Antonio! From Final Four basketball excitement to the myriad of Fiesta events, downtown has been alive with celebrations and so much energy Though we may have done our share of complaining about the traffic and crowds, it was beautiful to see all the excitement from the concerts, celebrations, cheers and even blimps I am not sure when I have seen downtown more alive with the hustle and bustle of so many activities . As we prepare for the 2025 summer camp season, let us carry this momentum with us Let us gather, serve, and celebrate together – rooted in our mission, and always growing stronger through fellowship . Together, we are Hermann Sons Life
Fun Day tickets available soon
SAN ANTONIO – Hermann Sons Life is working with Six Flags Fiesta Texas to again provide discounted tickets for a fun day at the park this summer This year, families can attend on a day of their own choosing during a designated two-week period . Due to increasingly busy summer schedules, Member Benefits Vice President Cecily Kelly explains the change will allow more families to be able to take advantage of the discounted amusement park tickets
Online tickets sales and dates will be available as soon as all the details are worked out Stay tuned on social media and the website!

‘Curing the fear of cancer one box at a time’
BELLVILLE – The Blessing Box Project is a grassroots organization founded and spearheaded by Dawn Compton, a Bellville resident, who along with volunteers from across the nation, pack up, seal and ship boxes to cancer survivors.
The Blessing Box Project helps women who need not just mastectomy pillows and drain shirts, but support and encouragement.
“No person who receives a Blessing Box is ever charged for one. These boxes are made with kindness by fellow Pink Sisters aka Pink Tribe and loved ones who want to be part of this amazing grassroots project,” Dawn said.
Dawn received a breast cancer diagnosis in March 2018 and underwent a double mastectomy and reconstruction in April 2018. She underwent chemo, radiation and is now in the seventh year of 10 continuing a chemo pill (hormone blocker) treatment.
Early in her journey she began knitting hats to give to others un-
dergoing chemo adopting a perspective of “choosing to shine not whine” and focusing on praying for others.
She began researching Facebook for others on cancer journeys and discovered several groups. She found a pillow and shirt pattern and made herself a couple and a couple more to donate to her doctor’s office. She decided to make some for a friend she had met through Facebook and sent her a box.
“Little did I know the Blessing Box Project was breathed into existence,” Dawn said.
Word spread of the special boxes and requests starting coming in. People were interested in purchasing the boxes, but none were ever sold, only given out of kindness. Soon postage was donated, materials were donated, fabric was donated, and women were holding sewing gatherings. By 2019, a spreadsheet was developed for requests and the program continued to grow. Volun-
teers from across the U.S. joined the effort.
Relying on her faith in God and following His word, Dawn said, “abundance shows up before I need it.
“This story is not about me, but about a tribe, a community, a Facebook page, of almost 15,000 people around the world,” she said.
Dawn said no one who requests a box is ever told no. “Every request gets a box, every single time,” she said. “Early or late the box always goes. It is never too late for kindness.”
In Every Blessing Box:
A drain shirt. Drains are a pain, and these shirts allow you to have some comfort with pockets on the inside to hold the drains and buttons to slip it on with ease. They make it easier to not snag those tubes on everything, go to the doctor or simply move from bed to chair.
A Mastectomy Pillow
These pillows are a huge help.

Vice president a life-time HSL member
SAN ANTONIO – Samantha Schulmeier Kelley has been employed at the Home Office for almost 20 years and has served as Vice President of Operations and COO since June of 2017.
In addition to the myriad of duties that come with being an executive, she oversees the Member Services and New Business, Claims and Annuities Departments. She has been a member since she was two years old and has served as vice president of Kirby Lodge since the late, great Leroy Muehlstein talked her into it more than 13 years ago.
Over the years, Samantha has earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics with a Minor in Statistics from UTSA, two associate’s degrees from San Antonio College, one in Business Administration, one in Mathematics, and is a Certified IRA Professional (CIP)
Samantha

and a Fraternal Insurance Counselor (FIC).
Samantha said she and the love of her life, husband Jonathan, enjoy going on many adventures together. They especially like going to zoos, museums, concerts,
They make everything from a car ride, hugging loved ones, and holding little ones and pets tolerable.
Extra
surprises
Extra surprises are small gifts that have been donated by the pink tribe, many of whom are previous recipients of a Blessing Box.
Additional pillows
Heart pillows and port pillows are also available as requested. Heart pillows are used under the arm to cushion lumpectomy and lymph node incisions. Port pillows protect chest ports while using seat belts or when extra cushioning is needed.
Help Our Cause
The average box, if there were no donations, cost $29 for material to construct a pillow and drain shirt and postage is an average of $14 per box continental USA, totaling $43.
At publishing date there have been almost 21,000 requests and right at 19,000 boxes have
been mailed.
“The pending box dates all spread out for past, present and future surgeries so I continue to ship as many as I can as often as I can for as long as I can and then I sleep!” Dawn said.
Due to never charging for a Blessing Box, donations are never expected but are always appreciated. Donations can be funds, fabric, men’s buttonup shirts, poly-fill or supplies through an Amazon wish list.
More information, ways to donate and box requests are available through The Blessing Box Project website, theblessingboxproject.com.
“…Just don’t give your power and smile away to the fear. You ARE strong enough. Don’t worry alone. You are NOT alone. We are now all connected by the amazing pink thread. I can’t cure cancer, but we are curing the fear of cancer one box at a time.” – Written in cooperation with Dawn Compton.

Camp News
Camp enrollment going strong!
By IAN BRASSETT
Executive Camp Director
Greetings from Comfort!
What a wonderful beginning to the start of spring. We finally had some much needed rain here in Comfort; however, we could always use some more. These winds however have been driving Heath crazy as he continues to keep the pools looking fabulous for our campers and staff.
Enrollment is still going strong and certainly ahead of our projections. Session Two, July 6-12, is now full, but there are still openings in other sessions! Don’t forget to use the member code for discounted member pricing.
CIT Zoom
Since Camp is now coed, there will be some differences from previous summers. Therefore, I will be holding a CIT Zoom meeting to help prepare parents and CIT campers. It will be held on May 22 at 6 p.m. Watch our social media for the link.
I am still accepting CIT applications for members who will be 15 and 16 by Sept.
1, 2025. The application and directions can be found on the Hermann Sons Life website, hermannsonslife.org
Go to Member Benefits – Camp – Counselors-in-Training.
Volunteer Workday
A second Camp Volunteer Workday will be held on May 17 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The first Volunteer Workday was an incredible success! It was so productive, and as I mentioned earlier there is so much to accomplish blending the boys’ and girls’ camps together.
We'd love your help again! This one will be targeting activities and getting the facility prepared for the arrival of our campers. If you can spend some or all your day with us, it would be greatly appreciated.
Open house
The annual Open House will be held June 7 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Bring your friends and families for a great day of swimming, the challenge course, archery, dance, crafts, tours and more!

Not only are we preparing camp for our campers, but we are hosting groups who are renting the camp facilities. In March, four different groups utilized our magnificent facility with two more in both April and May. The rentals generate funds
that help us keep camp rates down.
The facilities are available for church retreats, band camps, girl and boy scouts, weddings, family reunions and more. It’s a great value.
Visit the website for more rental details and fees.
Lodge donations
Thank you to Bandera Lodge for donating $1,000 and to Comfort Lodge for its $500 donation! All donations are greatly appreciated and will be used to benefit the campers. There are many costs involved to keep the 30-year-old facilities maintained.

In the blink of an eye they’re grown
I want to personally wish all Hermann Sons Life moms, Grandmothers, mother figures and caregivers a Happy Mother’s Day! Being the mom to four children, it is amazing to me how fast the time flew by and in the blink of an eye, all my children are grown and on their own. Being a mom has been the most exhausting, sometimes overwhelming, underpaid, but incredibly rewarding job I have ever had. I would not trade any of it and would go back and do it all again if I had the chance.
I recently heard that 90% of the time you spend with your children happens before they turn 18. In hindsight, the time
with my kids flew by and their childhood years are gone. I wish I had taken in more of the everyday moments of their little hands in mine, all the giggles, the sweet hugs, the neverending questions and ordinary magic and awe that my children brought during the simplest moments of my life. I also wish that I had worried less about the never-ending messes in the house and all the sleepless nights and daily chaos that seemed to never stop and instead took the time to simply absorb the sweet moments. Enjoy your day on May 11 –YOU DESERVE IT! Happy Mother’s Day!
– Teresa Saathoff

Howie’s Happenings
Off the naughty list – well almost!
By ROBIN CZARNEK President and CEO
The boys almost made it off the naughty list, but they always seem to find their way back on it. They’re just too mischievous and love treats too much to stay off of it!
Right after Dave and I made a quick trip to the grocery store, we got home and rushed to put the groceries away and ran off to a lodge meeting. In our hurry, we left both corn and flour tortillas on the kitchen island. We came home to find bits of plastic on the floor and a backyard full of corn tortillas. The boys definitely seem to prefer flour tortillas – there wasn’t a single bit of them left!
We enjoyed Easter at my cousin’s home. They raise Cane Corsos and have a Boston Terrier granddog, Maggie. We had a blast playing with them. All their pups are so well-trained and entertaining. They amaze us with their skills. Their pups
mind so well and even perform fun tricks. We’ve often said the real problem with the boys is probably us. When we got home, they gave us the full sniff-down for sure.
Howie and Beau want to introduce you to their adorable friend, Flynn. He was one of the first three pups rescued from a hoarding case. He was very scared at first, but has settled in amazingly well and has really come out of his shell. He’s a goofy little boy with a big personality who absolutely loves attention and gives major tail wags to show his appreciation. If you’re interested in meeting Flynn or any of the other pups at HOTK9, please email hotk9rescue@yahoo.com to schedule a visit. HOTK9 is a 501(c)(3) no-kill canine shelter dedicated to rescuing pups in need.
For more information or to view the amazing dogs available for adoption, visit www. heartoftexasspca.com or find

Heart of Texas SPCA/HOTK9 Rescue on Facebook. You’ll also find details about their adoption events. These are great opportunities to meet more wonderful pups. Please remember that HOTK9 Rescue is a volunteer-run organization, so email is the best way to reach them.
Again mom? I love you too and it wasn’t me, it was Beau.
Hello! My name is Flynn! I would be a great, fun addition to your family! Well that was exhausting! Let’s rest up before we go again!
