First Muehlstein Memorial Award presented

SAN ANTONIO – Hermann

Sons Life Agent Chris Naughton is the first recipient of the Leroy Muehlstein Memorial Award for Agent Fraternalist of the Year. Chris was presented the award during the Agents’ Award Banquet held in San Antonio at the Iron Cactus on May 6.

Presenting the award were Chair of the Board Kim Krueger and President and CEO Robin Czarnek.

Kim first announced the three runners-up for the award (in no particular order). They are Agent Donna Blinka, member of Deanville Lodge, Agent Linda Mattocks, member of Round Top Lodge and Agent Janice Kuhen, member of San Marcos Lodge.

With the blessing of the Muehlstein family, Robin established the award in August 2022.

“We will be recognizing an agent each year that exhibits what it means to be not only a Hermann Sons Life member, but

a humanitarian, she announced.

“We will be accepting nominations from our members for this award. Mr. Muehlstein exempli-

fied the true spirit of fraternalism, and it’s our blessing to be able to carry on his good works through our agents. Mr. Muehstein was the ultimate fraternalist who lived life every day by the Hermann Sons Life motto of “Friendship, Love and Loyalty.”

Leroy served as Grand President from 1989 to 2009, longer than any other Grand President.

Kim explained that Chris, a member of Siemering Lodge, was nominated by someone that met him one evening and by the night’s end, decided he wanted to work for Hermann Sons Life – Curtis Dishman is now a regional sales manager for the Sales Department.

“This agent is an all-round

standing agent,” Kim said.

Awards presented to 2022 top-selling agents

SAN ANTONIO – The top-selling agents for 2022 were honored during the Agents’ Award Banquet held at the Iron Cactus restaurant on the San Antonio River Walk on Saturday, May 6.

Earlier in the day, the agents, their guests and the Sale Department staff enjoyed some bowling fun and food at the Bowl and Barrel at The Rim.

Following the banquet, the agents and guests continued the fun at the San Antonio Home Association Rathskeller and spent the night at the Hyatt Hotel.

In her welcome, President and CEO Robin Czarnek said, “I am so proud of all the agents who work so hard. I am so grateful to you and am so proud of the whole

sales team.”

Vice President of Sales Teresa Saathoff also thanked the agents for their hard work and told the top-selling agents, “I need more like you!” She also thanked the board of directors in attendance and Robin for supporting the Sales Department.

“With Robin, I see Hermann Sons Life moving forward in great ways,” Teresa said. “She works tirelessly.”

Teresa also thanked the Sales and Communications department staff for their work to support the sales team.

She announced the awards program for agents was changing and a new club, the Grand Presidents Club, has been estab-

lished and agents could earn a cruise.

Following the awards presentation, Chair of the Board Kim-

berly Krueger said, “Agents, we thank you for your hard work and See

Naughton receives Fraternalist of Year award

Cont’d from Pg. 1

“He will go above and beyond to help any member of Hermann Sons Life. He works with all eight lodges that meet in the San Antonio Home Association building scheduling meetings and events.

“He has been successful at making the San Antonio Hermann Sons Home Association profitable for its membership.

“He has diligently and passionately worked to ensure the success of the San Antonio Home Association. When he first came on board at the end of 2019, he poured himself into cleaning and repairing everything he possibly could on his own. He managed the staff, and when COVID hit and the association shut down, he spent hundreds of hours rebuilding the bar in the ballroom,

renovating the bridal room and meticulously cleaned the floors.

“He went through every closet and spent hours removing trash and restoring the treasures he found which he put on display in the bar and the office. He also rewrote contracts, renegotiated parking rates and tripled the income on ballroom rentals by not only ensuring the ballroom looked great but also sold the

value of the building.

"He spends hours on weekends working events and ensuring guests and members have everything they need often staying until 4 a.m. to get the ballroom cleaned up for the church rental on Sunday mornings.

“Lastly, he bartends faithfully every night to ensure they have a good following, and he talks up being a member of the Her-

mann Sons Life constantly at the bar and to people who come in to view their venue. He is motivated only by ensuring that Hermann Sons Life has a good reputation and a solid membership base.”

Chris has been an agent since 2020. He made Executive Club for 2021 and again in 2022 and was recognized during the banquet for his achievements.

Sales Department celebrates top-selling agents

We celebrated the 2022 awardwinning agents on May 6 in San Antonio. Twelve agents qualified for a club, and we also recognized the Rookie of the Year. The sales team and agents spent the afternoon at Bowl and Barrel for some friendly bowling competition with lots of good food and drinks. For the evening event, the Board of Directors joined us and we headed down to the San Antonio Riverwalk for dinner at the Iron Cactus. We wrapped up the evening at the historic Rathskeller Bar in the Hermann Sons Home Association Building.

There are three levels of production that qualifies our agents to attend the Awards Banquet,

but we are going to change things up going forward. Agents can still qualify for the Million Dollar Club, Executive Club and President’s Club, but instead of attending a banquet, a cruise for two out of Galveston will be awarded to any agent that qualifies for the new Grand President’s Club. This award is to incentivize our agents and to reward them for all their hard work.

This year a new award was created called the Leroy Muehlstein Memorial Award for the Agent Fraternalist of the Year. This award recognizes the hard work and dedication that agents put into their lodge. We are lucky to have agents that represent the true spirit of fraternalism. These agents are so involved with their lodges, from being officers,

spending countless hours working events, to maintaining their lodge buildings and the list goes on and on.

Chris Naughton from Siemering Lodge in San Antonio was the recipient for 2022. Chris comes from a family with a long history at Hermann Sons Life. He is a great sales agent and goes above and beyond to help and serve Siemering Lodge and the San Antonio Home Association. After he was presented with the award, he generously opened the Rathskeller just for our agents and even tended bar for us!

The three runners-up for the Agent Fraternalist of the Year were Linda Mattocks, Round Top Lodge; Janice Kuhen, San Marcos Lodge; and Donnie Blin-

ka, Deanville Lodge. The Sales Team appreciates these agents for their continued involvement and hard work in their local lodges.

This year I presented a new award, Rookie of the Year. The award went to Laurie Steele who is a new agent out of the Devine area. Laurie is everything we want in an agent. She quickly learned all our products and technology, advertises in her local papers and sets up a sales table at community events. There is no doubt in my mind that Laurie will be one of our top producers going forward. As far as the Rookie of the Year award for 2023, there are a couple of new agents that I have my eye on.

I appreciate every agent that is out there talking about Her-

mann Sons Life and bringing new members to our organization. Our agents go above and beyond and truly understand the value and protection that our products provide to families.

If you are reading this paper and know of someone that you think would make a great life insurance, annuity or Medicare agent in your community or lodge, please have them give the Hermann Sons Life Sales Team a call at 1-877-437-6266. Please reach out to your agent or call us if you need to make any changes to your existing policies, want to review your existing coverage, purchase additional life insurance, want to open an annuity, or have questions about or need help signing up for Medicare.

Howie’s Happenings

Howie and Beau bonding - in mischief

Howie and Beau are as close as we could have hoped for. Howie is an awesome big brother and Beau is great company for him. We have discovered that they are also partners in crime. Beau has grown so much and his giraffe-like long legs have helped him become a proficient counter surfer. For Mother’s Day, Beau was able to steal a box of cakes our son Garrett sent to me.

As I write this, I am enjoying a dinner from In-NOut Burger…primarily because when we turned our backs, Beau helped himself to an eight- ounce block of mozzarella cheese and ciabatta bread I was planning to use for dinner. If anyone has the secret to deter the counter surfing, Dave and I are certainly needing your best advice! Howie is all too happy to tell on his brother. He likes to bark when Beau is getting into mischief to make sure we know so Beau gets in trouble.

Howie and Beau wanted to share their puppy friends with you. These puppies are just a few of the adorable pups of all kinds located at Heart of Texas SPCA/ HOT K9 Rescue.

If you’re interested in meeting any of the amazing pups at HOTK9 or for more information, please email: hotk9rescue@yahoo.com to schedule a time to meet them.

For more information and to view all of the amazing dogs available for adoption, please check out Heart of Texas SPCA / HOTK9 Rescue on Facebook or at www.heartoftexasspca.com

Camp & Dance News

Welcome to the business end of summer camp!

Camp preparations are in full swing. The weekend of May 20, 16 camp leaders were at Camp for staff training. This summer we used a camp professional from Maine to help our leaders with tips and tricks to guide them through the tough job of managing their peers at such an early age. I’m excited to see these former campers grow in their role at Camp. Who knows, there may be a camp director among them.

It will not be long before our overseas staff begin arriving and acclimatizing themselves to Texas, the weather and the time zones.

This summer we will be training about 40 staff members and CITs to become lifeguards. If the weather hits us like it did last summer, we’ll be ready!

We need our parents

Camp starts very soon. We really need our parents to complete their camper’s Health History Form, the Activity Selection Form and the Dorm Assignment and Check-Out Form as soon as possible. PLEASE DON’T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE. It will affect your child’s dorm placement and activity selections.

I’ve already begun the process of bunking campers who have submitted their Health History Forms for session one, placing them in the top or bottom bunk of their choice and accommodating friend requests.

Getting campers in bunks with their friends is a high priority for us. We do have some bunking

rules for you to consider.

• Remember we try not bunk campers together who are more than one year apart in age. The younger campers often cling to their older siblings which negatively affects both of their camp experiences. You will be asked what grade your child is entering after the summer.

• If a request is made by a camper to bunk with a younger child, the requesting camper will be placed in the younger cabin. Younger campers will not be assigned to older camper dorms.

• Placing campers in age-appropriate dorms provides them the opportunity to make friends of their own age and that provides for a better summer camp experience.

• The number of friend requests for assignment to the same dorm is limited to FOUR.

• Creating a large group of friends in one dorm is not beneficial to the rest of the campers in the dorm who have few or no friends. These campers often get excluded from dorm activities by the established friend groups. This happened in 2022 and I will not allow it to happen in 2023.

• We do not guarantee bed placement in the dorms. Campers will be assigned throughout the dorm. When requesting friends on the Dorm Assignment Form, the first name listed will be a bunk friend (top/bottom beds). The second and third names listed will be in the dorm. Only the first four requested names listed on the form will be placed in the same

dorm.

• Placing campers in age-appropriate dorms sometimes means the actual dorm your child is in is not their “expected dorm”. Dorm placements are not always linear. Sometimes we have a lot of younger campers in a session, or a lot of older campers in a session. This means that your teen camper may not always be placed in either Hawk or White Tail, or if we have a lot of 12-year-olds, they may be placed in Bob White or Coyote.

• Age-appropriate placement of campers in dorms is more important than what dorm a child is placed in.

Arrival Day

We will be emailing parents with their dorm assignments and arrival times five-seven days before Camp begins. Each cabin will be scheduled a 45-minute arrival window between the hours of 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Campers without the Health History Form on file will be scheduled to arrive between 4-5 p.m. and assigned a bunk upon arrival.

Like last summer, we will be asking parents not to leave their vehicle on arrival day. The rolling drop-off really works for the campers and staff… and based on the surveys, the parents liked it too!

Please do not bring RVs and trailers with you. We simply do not have the capacity to handle these vehicles on arrival day. On arrival day, we ask that you bring any prescription medication in its original container.

You will need the access code. The

Open House

Open House is on June 10. This is a great opportunity for campers (and parents) to meet the counselors and directors, take tours of the camp and participate in some activities. We’ll also have the camp store open (cash or check), food and Hermann Sons Life agents will be available to meet with non-members.

Registration for schools of dance will open in June

SAN ANTONIO – Hermann Sons

Life School of Dance registration for 2023-2024 will open online in June. Informational brochures with registration instructions will be mailed to households with eligible juniors who have not previously registered. Returning dancers will receive an email. There are currently 22 schools located in South and Central Texas. Dance locations are pro-

vided in the brochure and on the website.

The benefit is available to policyholders (members) in good standing who will be 3 to 17 years of age as of Sept. 1, 2023.

To be in good standing, all life insurance premiums and dues must be current and remain current throughout the dance year. Members may enroll in any one school of dance that they

choose.

This member benefit is designed to teach the art of dance in a wholesome atmosphere of fun, work, physical exercise and fellowship. Each school of dance teaches varying degrees of tap, ballet and jazz.

Because these classes are a member benefit, there is no monthly tuition. However, there is a one-time registration fee.

This fee is determined by the school to help pay for facilities and cover day-to-day operational costs. The amount of the fee varies from school to school.

You will pay that fee at the time of registration. This fee is only refundable prior to the start of dance classes.

The Home Office also collects an assessment fee at the time of registration that helps offset

operational costs that the Home Office covers for all schools. This fee is nonrefundable.

For more information and to register online, visit hermannsonslife.org and scroll to the bottom of the home page.

Deadline to register is Oct. 1. Most classes begin after Sept. 1. Not yet a member? Call 877437-6266 for policy and membership information.

Join Hands Day

Paul Vogt joins hands with scouts to paint rocks

FAIR OAKS RANCH –Paul Vogt Lodge joined hands with Boy Scout troop 407 in observance of Join Hands Day on May 6. Lodge officers along with Troop Master John McCune, Troop Committee Chairman Matt Hajda and the scouts enjoyed a morning event at Morningside at Menger Springs Independent Living painting rocks with residents.

McCune, along with Life Enrichment Manager Emily Jellick, coordinated the event and provided all materials to paint rocks.

By appearance some of the residents were eager to help the boys with expert advice in painting while others were content just visiting with the youth.

Painting rocks, engaging in conversation between residents and attendees, gave residents an opportunity to share some of their life stories and experiences. By most accounts, most of the scouts were quite busy concentrating on their masterpieces. Also available were peel and stick options so everyone had a choice on their style.

Following the event, seven dozen cookies provided by the lodge were enjoyed.

Dozens of rocks were painted, decorated and some embellished. They will all be placed outdoors along the walkways for residents and visitors to marvel at the workmanship and beauty from the day where young and

old gathered with a common good of Friendship, Love and Loyalty.

Square Dance Club classes start in fall Fort Worth Lodge welcomes five new junior members

The Hermann Sons Square Dance Club had fun in April and May. In April, we danced at the Home Association Building in San Antonio, and we danced at the Tri Point Center for the Annual Fiesta Dance on April 28. Most of us were there before the cold front brought in the heavy rains. Luckily the rain didn’t last long. We missed Gene but heard he is recovering fine.

King Antonio and his staff arrived. They informed us they were running late due to the rain and high water in

some places. We got him and his entourage set up. After the King spoke, we got him, his lovely wife and entourage into squares and proceeded to teach them how to dance. They had fun and wanted to stay longer but their schedule said go.

We found out while they were boarding their cars that the extra bus load of people had accidently hitched themselves to the King’s convoy. We had no problem showing an extra 16 people how simple square dancing is.

In May, five students graduated. They dance fantastically, and they had fun at the Austin Areas Mid Tex Festival on May 12-13.

The next big event coming up is the State Convention in Bryan June 1 -18. We will be starting another class in the fall. Come on down and learn to square dance. It is easy, simple and fun. Remember a square dancer is a friend you haven’t met yet! For information, call 210473-2479.
