Share the legacy of Hermann Sons Life
By ROBIN CZARNEK President and CEO
In the coming months, you may hear about work being done at Hermann Sons Life Everyone at the Home Office is working hard to find new ways to grow and thrive in our ever-changing environment We want to ensure that all our unique and special member benefits are around for future generations
Like the rest of the world, Hermann Sons Life has been impacted by the challenging economic environment of the last few years, especially given inflation, the ups and downs of the stock market and the pandemic . Rest assured, your certificates (policies) are protected through financial reserves that are set aside to ensure that every single claim can and will be paid Those reserves are there for the protection of our members and your financial security will always be our top priority .
you in the future as we have always done
The last couple of months have been packed with HSL events From participating in Join Hands Day, dance recitals and Camp, so many of our members have been keeping the fraternal spirit alive enjoying our robust member benefit programs
In keeping with HSL’s fraternal tradition, May 6th was Join Hands Day where lodges across the state each chose a service project and worked together to serve their community You’ll be able to read about some service projects our lodges participated in to serve their communities in this edition
Camp is always such a fun-filled week for the kids and it’s a great opportunity for them to unplug from technology and enjoy just being a kid
HSL camps do an incredible job of teaching our junior members faith, responsibility, patriotism and good stewardship Camp is such a memorable and enriching experience for not only the campers, but the counselors as well
Since the addition of overseas staff, the experience has even greater depth as the campers and overseas staff are able to learn about each other’s cultures
If you have a chance to check out our social media pages and/ or the newspaper, you’ll be able to see pictures from Join Hands Day, Dance and Camp
The legacy that is Hermann Sons Life is a beautiful one and it’s one that is so important to share As I have attended recitals and enjoyed pictures from Join Hands Day, Dance and Camp, I can’t help but smile and feel overwhelmed with the blessing that is the HSL community If you haven’t gotten involved yet, I encourage you to do so There are so many great things happening at HSL!

In insurance, there are considerable checks and balances with the Department of Insurance, including reports, audits and financial analysis that are done to ensure the safety and protection of all insureds . While we haven’t been immune to the challenging economic environment, we are researching ways to save money, as well as to find new streams of revenue so that we may serve
I had the pleasure of attending dance recitals recently and was thrilled to see how many of our junior members are taking part in our dance program Our dance teachers, assistants and parent liaisons always work so hard to make sure dance is a rewarding and fun experience for the dance students .
As dance recitals are ending, camp season is ramping up Camp is now in full swing . Our counselors arrived a couple of weeks ahead of the campers and received a great deal of training and our Executive Camp Director Ian Brassett even took it a step further and provided leadership training for our counselors

Life can change on a dime; are you prepared?
By TERESA SAATHOFF
Vice President of Sales
Another season of dance recitals has come and gone, Hermann Sons Life Camp is back in session for the summer of 2023 and before we know it, dance classes will start up again.
The Sales Department has been helping parents get life insurance policies in place for their children so they can take advantage of the Hermann Sons Life living benefits. Every child attending our camp and dance classes has a life insurance policy with a premium locked in at

their age at the time of issue. The parents not only get to take advantage of very affordable rates for camp and dance, but they have purchased for their children a lifetime of insurance protection.
Life can change on a dime. It seems like our weather changed overnight. We went from enjoying rain and unseasonably cool weather to the most recent forecast of 107 degrees. It is unpleasant to think about, but what if something happens to your spouse or significant other or to a parent of young children.
Do they have life insurance in place to protect their loved ones if they are not around tomorrow? Do they have enough protection to replace their salary or enough life insurance protection to pay the mortgage and bills or cover the cost of burial? Will their loved ones be allowed to grieve their sudden loss or will they be trying to figure out how to pay for groceries, pay the bills and where they are going to live next month? We all hear stories every day of tragic events that change a family’s future in an instant. Do
not let that become your family’s story. Hermann Sons Life has agents all over the state of Texas that can help you figure out an affordable life insurance plan that will give you peace of mind and protection for the people that mean the most to you. A lot of parents tell us that they have insurance at work. And yes, having life insurance at work is great, but will you have the same job and coverage in the event something happens? It is always good to have some coverage locked in outside of
your job. So if you choose to change jobs or if you get laid off or decide to retire, you will continue to have that essential insurance protection that your family can depend on. Please call us for a free quote today. Getting life insurance does not take a lot of time, but the peace of mind you get from having protection for your family will last a lifetime.
Hermann Sons Life is a full service life insurance company offering whole life insurance, term insurance, annuities and Medicare.

The first shift of volunteers was tasked with event set-up complete with tablecloths and free swag. Second shift worked during the festivities checking in on already fully engaged players and then event breakdown. Bingo is hosted by S4 the third weekend of every month and is a very successful fund-raiser for the Resource Center.

Howie’s Happenings
Furry friends are the best mood-lifting, stress relievers
By ROBIN CZARNEK President and CEO
With the summer heat upon us, Howie and Beau have been limiting their time outside, which has turned out to be quite an adventure for Dave and I. They are always looking for something to keep them entertained and it’s not always ideal. Most recently, they found billiards chalk and talcum powder and proceeded to decorate our stairs and living room with it but were nice enough to put the talcum powder bottle back where they found it upstairs.
We just got them a little plastic pool since they seem to love splashing around in water, so I hope to have pictures of them playing in the water to share.
They also have an affinity for peanut butter filled pretzels. Somehow, they managed to take the bulk sized peanut butter pretzel container from Costco through the doggie door and into our back yard.
It’s never a dull moment with these two and we are always laughing at their antics. We’re thinking we need to put up a hidden camera to catch them in action while we’re out.
While the messes they make can be a nuisance, few things compare to the unconditional love dogs bring to the family. Both jump up and down with excitement when we get
home. They both have decided their bedtime is whenever I go to bed, and they follow me up the stairs and go right to sleep. The minute we stir in the morning, they are right at the side of the bed, ready to say good morning and give kisses!
If you have been thinking about adding a new pup to your family, do it! They are the best mood-lifting, stress reliev-
ers I can think of, if you don’t mind a mess now and then.
Howie and Beau wanted to share their friend, April, with you. April is just one of the many adorable pups of all kinds located at Heart of Texas SPCA/ HOT K9 Rescue.
If you’re interested in meeting any of the pups at HOTK9 or for more information, please email: hotk9rescue@yahoo.
com to schedule a time to meet them.
For more information and to view all of the amazing dogs available for adoption, please check out Heart of Texas SPCA / HOTK9 Rescue on Facebook or at www.heartoftexasspca. com. Keep in mind that Heart of Texas SPCA/HOT K9 Rescue is a volunteer run organization, so email is best.

JACKSON WILDER is a member of Mission-Alamo Lodge and graduated cum laude from Ronald Reagan High School in San Antonio. Jackson is an Eagle Scout and will attend Abilene Christian University to study theatre.

Congratulations Scholarship Recipients! Retirement Home awards four senior scholarships
COMFORT – Hermann
Sons
Life Retirement Home Scholarships have been awarded to four high school graduates. A total of 25 eligible applications were judged on May 19 by a group of four residents and staff.
The 2023 recipients are Jacob Kohleffel, a member of Corpus Christi Lodge; Tamara Otto, a member of Schulenburg Lodge; Ray Allen Schaefer, a member of Laubach Lodge; and Emma Traugott, a member of MissionAlamo Lodge.
Each student will receive $1,500 to further their education.
To be eligible, students must be a member in good standing, complete an application and write an essay titled “What Hermann Sons Life Means to Me.”
Jacob Kohleffel
Jacob, the son of Mike and Lorene Kohleffel of Portland, graduated from UTRGV Mathematics and Science Academy. He was a Hermann Sons Life camper for three years and later became a CIT and a counselor. He plans to attend Sewanee: The University of the South and study economics.
In his essay, Jacob wrote, “Camp every summer has been one of my favorite things growing up. I met some of my closest friends as a counselor. I know this experience is not unique to me. Hermann Sons Life has provided many people with a community of friends and has given people peace of mind in the event of disaster. For me, Hermann Sons Life is reassurance. Every year, camp gives me something to look forward to. I knew that no matter how stressed I was at the end of the school year, I had camp waiting for me.
“I have seen firsthand that Hermann Sons Life has the same impact on other people. I have watched my sister look forward to coming to camp all year; I have heard her talk about working there for years. I also witnessed this as a camp counselor.
I spoke to many kids who were shy, did not make friends easily, and came out of their comfort zone at camp. Through my time at camp, Hermann Sons Life has given me confidence in my future. Overall, my time at Hermann Sons Life Camp has been a transformative and empowering experience.
“Hermann Sons also gives me the reassurance that if something ever happens to me, my family will be taken care of. Despite this element of Hermann Sons not being a major concern in my life now, it is reassuring to know that when I have a family, they will be safe. It has also been a place for me to grow up and interact with the world. Hermann Sons has given me friends and memories I will take with me for the rest of my life, and I am grateful for the experiences offered to me.”
Tamara Otto
Tamara, the daughter of Keith and Stacy Otto of Schulenburg, graduated from Schulenburg High School. She was a camper for four years, a CIT and a counselor. Tamara plans to attend Texas A&M University and enter the nursing program to later become a labor and delivery nurse.
In her essay, Tamara wrote, “Hermann Sons Life has been a large part of my life for the past ten years. Watching my older sisters enjoy a week-long ‘vacation’ at camp was something I envied
as a little girl.
“Hermann Sons Life means so much to me as it has given me life-long friendships, taught me responsibility, and blessed me with my love of the outdoors.
“At a young age, I was very shy. However, camp allowed me to explore and gain confidence.
“Overall, Hermann Sons Life has provided me with such a memorable childhood as I am now able to be confident, responsible, work well with others, and create authentic friendships! “
Ray Allen Schaefer
Ray, the son of Allen and Tammy Schaefer of New Braunfels, graduated from Canyon High School. He attended Camp for five years. Ray plans to attend Texas A&M University at College Station and study engineering.
In his essay, Ray wrote, “In my younger years, I was fortunate enough to attend Hermann Sons Life Summer Camp. The experience I gained from this camp has shaped the person I am today, instilling values and skills that have been of value to me throughout my life.
“One of the most important aspects of Hermann Sons Life Camp was a focus on community. The camp brought together children from different backgrounds, placed them in cabins, and encouraged them to have fun and work together. This experience taught me the importance of building relationships,
networking, and connecting with people. The sense of belonging and brotherhood that I felt at camp has carried with me throughout my life, and I strive to create similar situations in my personal and professional relationships.
“Hermann Sons Life Camp also created a sense of responsibility and leadership within myself. The counselors encouraged campers to take on leadership roles and to be responsible for their actions. This experience has given me the confidence to take on leadership roles in school organizations, work, and other areas of my life.
“...attending Hermann Sons Life Camp has been a defining experience in my life. The values and skills that I learned at camp have shaped the person I am today. I am grateful for the community, responsibility, leadership, and commitment that were instilled in me through this experience.”
Emma Traugott
Emma, daughter of Robin and Michael Traugott of St. Hedwig, graduated from East Central High School. She participated in the Hermann Sons School of Dance program and has attended Camp since 2018 and is now a counselor. Emma plans to attend Texas A&M University at College Station and study ag communications. She aspires to be a rodeo announcer.
In her essay, Emma wrote, “From being a camper to CIT and now a camp counselor at Hermann Sons Life Camp it has earned a special place in my heart, it changed me in ways I didn’t think were imaginable.
“Through the ups and downs of all of the summers I spent there, it gave me the best memories that I will forever and always cherish and friendships that will last a lifetime. It is one of the best experiences ever. Not only did it teach me life lessons and help me grow as a person, but it prepared me to be successful in college. I was on my own the whole summer and responsible for my own schedule. I learned how to be independent and manage my time with things that would normally take me longer than usual. I had to juggle my personal needs and the needs of others I was looking out for. I had to be organized and keep a space of my own while also sharing with everyone else. I was around people every day, so I learned how to get comfortable meeting new people and dealing with the ones that weren’t necessarily having the best of days.
“Furthermore, Hermann Sons Life also provides my family with life insurance, and when the time comes it will provide my family with the resources needed, without it I would not be able to attend this life changing camp.”
