It’s hard to believe the holi days are already here 2022 has just flown by While I know it has been a challenging year for so many, I have also seen a season of blessings for many in our community The blessings have come in many forms… new children and grandchil dren, vacations, marriages and perhaps even the adoption of a new furbaby As 2022 draws to a close and you look to the fresh start each new year brings, I do hope you’ll be able to find blessings despite the challenges
We were blessed to be able to partner with Kens 5 for their “Good Things Happen” seg ment to recognize a group do ing amazing work in our com munity, TruLight 127 Ministries It is a foster/adopt agency Hermann Sons Life was able to make a $7,500 donation and sponsored a Christmas toy drive for them as well So many of you stepped up to help and we are very grateful for your assistance in making this a suc cess “The Good Things Hap pen” episode aired on Nov 22 and is available on the Kens 5 website as well as on our social media pages
In addition to being able to highlight the great work at Tru Light 127, I was interviewed for another Kens 5’s segment, the “Great Day SA” morning show
This proved to be an unexpect ed blessing for me . David and I lost both of our beloved pups, Alice and Bear, in the last few months I had promised David that I wouldn’t look at adopt ing another pup until after Christmas since we’ll be travel ling a lot to see many of you at your lodge Christmas parties However, God had other plans While at the studio waiting for my interview, Heart of Texas K-9 Rescue was backstage as well and I was introduced to three dogs that were up for adop tion That’s where I met Howie, and it was love at first sight Howie made such an impact on me that I couldn’t stop thinking about him . I immediately talk ed to David and turned in an application to adopt him . I am proud to say that Howie is now a Czarnek, and we couldn’t be more thrilled
If you are looking for your next best friend, Heart of Texas K-9 is a great place to start You can see what they’re all about in our Community Spotlight on Pg . 3 To learn more and see what pups are available for adoption go to heartoftexas spca com or contact them at 830-981-2300 or hotk9rescue@ yahoo com
I look forward to seeing many of you at upcoming Christmas parties Whatever your plans are for the holidays, I wish you
many blessings . May you have joy, peace, lots of laughter and great food and be surrounded by your loved ones
I hope that as you attend holiday gatherings this season you will spread the word about the wonderful community of friendship, love and loyalty that is Hermann Sons Life and of course how Hermann Sons Life can secure their family’s fu ture with financial protection Thank you for being the best part of Hermann Sons Life

We are thrilled to feature Heart of Texas SPCA (HOT), a no-kill dog shelter and rescue as our featured charitable organization this month. Heart of Texas SPCA is a 501c3 non-profit organiza tion that does not receive any government funding and sur vives solely on public donations and volunteer support.
About Heart of Texas SPCA (HOT):
HOT provides an escape from certain death for hundreds of dogs and puppies in the com munity by providing temporary shelter and care until loving homes can be found.
• At a no-kill shelter, pets are
not euthanized because of space restrictions or their appearance
• Giving unwanted pets a sec ond chance for happiness; sav ing lives that others toss away
• Micro-chipping all pets of fered for adoption to ensure they can be returned if they be come lost
• Surgical spaying/neutering of all shelter pets to prevent un wanted animals and help them live long, healthy lives
• All pets offered for adoption are fully vaccinated
• Help educate the community on proper pet care and provide resources for those with ques tions
• Provide rehabilitation and treatment for those dogs trau
matized by abuse, neglect or injury
HOT will always hold a special place in my heart because we adopted Howie from them. They took such loving care of Howie and provided him the medical attention needed to save his life. While there are so many stories to choose from, Howie’s story is a beautiful one. Without HOT K-9 intervention and rescuers from Friends of Dogs at Guadalupe County Animal Control, along with the amazing team at VCA Henderson Pass Animal Hospi tal, his story could have ended tragically different. You can see a video with some of Howie’s story here: https:// www.facebook.com/hotk9res

I hope that everyone’s Thanks giving was full of good food and time spent with family and friends. This will be the first year that I go without turkey and dressing. I will spend the whole day and night flying to Africa with my husband and our daughter Annie to visit our other daughter Emily. She is complet ing her master’s degree at the University of Ghana. We are ex cited to have Emily act as our tour guide and she has planned out our entire stay with various events and trips.
One of my new job assignments as an officer is to attend pin pre sentations at some of our lodges. It has been very rewarding to see how much receiving a Hermann Sons Life pin means to our mem bers. When I announce the date that their policy was purchased it seems to make everyone a little sentimental as they reflect on
what age they were when their policy was purchased. A lot of the recipients were newborns when their policy was purchased, and it shows how important it was for a family to sign up new family members as early as possible.
One gentleman who received his 60-year pin remembered be ing around 10 years old when his parents bought his policy and he was able to attend Hermann Sons Life Camp. He said he at tended Camp for two summers and remembered earning the Camper of the Week award!
Since all four of my children are members and all attended Camp, I love the thought that years from now they will share the fun mem ories they had at Camp with the next generation of Saathoffs that will of course be Hermann Sons Life members.
The fact that a life insurance policy can provide our members with a lifetime of protection and create fun Camp memories is
something special that other in surance companies cannot pro vide.
It is awesome when I hear members tell me they are a multigeneration Hermann Sons Life family and that all their children and grandchildren are members too. What I want every member to keep in mind is that as juniors enter adulthood there is a need for additional insurance cover age. Life events like buying a first home, getting married, starting a family or even retiring are impor tant times to evaluate your need for more insurance protection.
Hermann Sons Life wants to be the company members turn to for guidance and future financial protection.
I will be attending several lodge Christmas parties in December and I look forward to meeting and visiting with our Hermann Sons Life members!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

For several years now, the Home Office has provided each lodge president, financial secre tary and corresponding secre tary with a Lodge Planner. This Lodge Planner is a valuable tool for officers to use to conduct lodge business in the most effi cient way possible.
Technology now makes it pos sible for us to provide you with your Lodge Planner in a digital format. Last year we offered lodge officers a choice to have the book mailed to them or to use the digital version. You can receive your Lodge Planner as you always have – a binder with dividers for the different sections and months – or you can use the online version of the Planner
that will be available on our web site, hermannsonslife.org.
The online version can be lo cated in the Officer Forms sec tion of the website. You will be able to flip through the pages just like you do with the paper version. You can print pages such as the agenda, sign-in sheet and financial reporting page. Of course, you will still be able to complete any of the necessary forms that are submitted to the Home Office. The pages in the printed version that are exclu sive to your lodge – pin recipient lists and tax-exempt form – will be mailed at the beginning of the year.
We are asking all lodge officers who would like to have a paper (hard) copy to contact the Home Office Member Benefits Depart ment by Jan.15. Please contact
Leonni Avalos or Tammi Suther land at 210-226-9261 or 800234-4124 or at leonnia@her mannsonslife.org or tammis@ hermannsonslife.org
If we do not hear from you, we will assume you plan to use the online version. The online ver sion will be available on Jan. 1, 2023.
There are a few things I’d like to note. It is very important to review the Local Lodge Bylaws. There is a procedure for changes to your lodge’s meet ing frequency and day, as well as your lodge dues. Before your lodge can make these changes, the proposal must be read at three consecutive meetings and voted on after the third reading. These will need to be submitted to the Home Office for approval by the Local Lodge Bylaws Com
mittee which is made up of the vice presidents of Hermann Sons Life.
There have been important changes made in the last few years. For instance, it is no lon ger necessary to vote on new members or lodge transfers. We have made this change into an introduction and welcoming in the Rituals to reflect this change. This makes new members and transfers feel welcome at their first meeting.
Lodge forms are important! The Home Office requires lodges to submit two financial reports, reports on Meeting Dates, Offi cer List and the Activity Report. These are crucial reports for the Home Office. Since COVID we had waived the Activity Report requirement, but it will be re quired for 2023.
Requesting representation for lodge meetings for pin presen tations or other events must be done as soon as the lodge has decided when representation is needed. We try to accommodate all requests, but we need time to coordinate schedules to make sure we have someone available.
I will also encourage lodges to look at the changes made to the Matching Funds Program. This program is designed to help lodges do community service for specific non-profit organizations and now it includes cost sharing on sponsorships for events.
The Member Benefits Depart ment is here to assist our lodges and officers as much as possible. If you have any questions or con cerns, please feel free to contact my office Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Wow! It’s all happening here at Hermann Sons Life Camp! Be fore I begin to review our plans for 2023, I’d like to wish every one a very Merry Christmas and joyful New Year!
First, let’s discuss sessions for this summer. While we are still working on scheduling the Grief Support Session, we will be op erating nine sessions of camp this summer.
Six sessions will be the tradi tional summer camp sessions. This is where we will operate Riv erside Camp for girls and Hilltop Camp for boys. Hiring has begun in earnest, and we are very ex cited to discuss an exciting new activity in the programming be low.
In 2023, we will be introduc ing a brilliant new special event on Friday. This program is called Bragging Rights! During Staff training our counselors will be setting some “Hermann Sons Life records” in more than 25-30 different, fun activities.
On Friday morning, the girls will travel to Hilltop Camp and try to break these records! We’ll keep track of camper and coun selor records throughout the summer and share in this news paper who has Bragging Rights! During the weekly elective class es there will be opportunities for campers to try some of these activities. I want to see all the re cords broken by the campers. While this activity is running, we’ll also offer campers the op portunity for free swim, GaGa and crafts. We’ll also launch all the Riverside and Hilltop camper rockets! After a morn ing of fun activities, we’ll have a joint barbecue lunch before the girls head back to Riverside for rest period and Redneck Water Games in the afternoon. Since we are adding this third joint camp activity on Friday morn ing, we will be moving Game Night to Monday night and the dance to Wednesday night.
TWO MINI-CAMPSIn 2022 we had a waiting list early in the registration season for the Mini-Camp program. This summer a second mini-Camp will be offered. We love our ju nior members and are very ex cited to see more 8- and 9-yearolds have their first summer camp experience.
This year two Grief Support sessions will be held. The first of these camps will be held during spring break. The second will be held during the summer.
If you wish to support the Grief Support Sessions or volunteer to help during the March 13-16, 2023, please do not hesitate to let me know. I can be reached at ianb@hermannsonslife.org. We will need in-dorm staff as well as staff to help with the kitchen and activities.
We will be making some in credible facility improvements for the summer. I’m blessed that Vice President of Member Ben efits Cecily Kelly and the board
of directors are so supportive of our continuing efforts to provide our junior members a wonderful facility.
Work has begun on a complete renovation of the bathrooms in Mosquito, Jackrabbit and Catfish cabins at Riverside. This is a ma jor undertaking, and we’re very
excited. The bathroom project involves a complete demoli tion of the existing bathrooms before they are renovated with a new modern look. We’ll keep you posted as these projects be gin.

In addition to the major renova tion in the dorms, Clay has begun to replace the softball shed which was damaged during the very heavy storm at end of the sum mer in 2022.
While replacing the shed, we decided to add a shaded pa vilion for our campers. This is a much-needed shaded area for the campers participating in field sports. Yea for shade!
Hilltop campers will not be left out. While we certainly do not need to renovate the dorms, we will be adding a 20 x 40 shaded pavilion at the pool complete with lights and six picnic tables. This facility is a much-needed addition for our campers par ticipating in free swim. It will also be available for groups to rent
throughout the year. I’m excited for both our Hilltop and Riverside campers to use this area on Friday mornings.
Another project we are under taking on Hilltop will not be no ticed by the campers. We have be gun the process of re-roofing the Hilltop Dining Hall’s kitchen along with the HHAACs bathroom roofs.
I’m spending most of my time interviewing returning staff members, potential new staff members from all over the world and CIT-1s. It really is one of my favorite parts of the job. I get to chat with your favorite counsel ors throughout the winter and spring. They are excited to be coming back to help provide our junior members the best possible summer camp experience avail able in camping. I’ve spoken to
Ding, Nessie, Hype, Casper, Slim, Smudge, Astro. Coconut, Toucan, Waste, Shankly, Shady, Lil’ Yakey, Sonar, Gil, Demo, Sushi, Shepard, Shuffle, Big Wig, Megatron, Panic, Doc, Medic Mike and Mum, Wipe out, B^3, UFO, Flip-Flop, Scooby, Beetles, Twitch, Little Miss, Nibbles, Peaches, Hazard, Spam, Plank, Ap pleJax, Tetris and so many more Sorry I can’t name them all.
It’s not too late! If you have an 18- or 19-year-old son or daugh ter that would like to work at camp – have them apply online at hermannsonslife.org. While 95% of our American staff are grown through our CIT program, it is not a requirement. I will always prioritize and give positions to a CIT and junior staff graduate. I’m always on the lookout to hire nice, kind staff members for our kiddos.
