Three past campers awarded scholarships
COMFORT – Three Hermann
Sons Life past campers were each awarded the 2023 Hermann Sons Youth Camp-Shannon Leigh Gaffney Scholarship. The three recipients of the $1,000 scholarship are Kaitlyn Kostelnik, a member of Needville Lodge, Tamara Otto a member of Schulenburg Lodge and Ashlyn Pesek, a member of Shiner Lodge.
The scholarship fund was created in memory of Shannon Leigh Gaffney, a former camper and counselor who passed away in 1998 at the age of 21 after losing her battle with leukemia. An annual golf tournament is held each spring to benefit the scholarship fund.
To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be a member in good standing and a past camper, complete an application and write an essay titled, “How being a Hermann Sons Life camper shaped the person I am today.”

Hermann Sons Life lodges celebrate legacy members
By ROBIN CZARNEK President and CEOWhat an amazing month it has been! There have been so many great things happening at Hermann Sons Life! Camp has been in full swing, our junior members are having a blast and our lodges have had anniversary celebrations and pin presentations, especially this last month Dave and I have been blessed to attend many pin presentations to honor our legacy members
Our first stop was at the Neiderwald Lodge pin presentation at Garcia’s Restaurant in Lockhart
Not only were they a lovely, fun group of people, but they were so welcoming to not only Dave and I, but to other patrons as well
We witnessed Niederwald Lodge President Donald Dailey sharing the HSL story to other patrons, and Connie Schriber made sure the meeting went off without

a hitch and ensured that members who were unable to attend the pin presentation were recognized as well Several members shared their stories of forming lifelong friends in this lodge and the “Friendship, Love and Loyalty” were palpable The family of 75year member Betty Wisian, was present and while she couldn’t attend, she asked her grandson to wear her 75-year pin which he did proudly . Mrs . Wisian’s son shared with the group that she wants to be buried with her 75year pin Not only is Mrs Wisian a 75-year member, but she retired as an agent after more than 25 years
My next visit was to San Marcos Lodge for its pin presentation I was honored to attend the meeting and saw so many familiar faces that have become like family San Marcos Lodge held a food drive, and there was a
tremendous amount of food collected for their community The ever-present Dorothy Schneider was there to share in the fun and shared with me that she grew up right near the hall where the San Marcos Lodge meets Dorothy loves spreading the word about HSL
Our next stop was the Harmonia Lodge pin presentation and 162nd anniversary celebration Harmonia is HSL’s first lodge and is still going strong Mike Beam shared the humble beginnings of HSL as well as the story of our namesake If you haven’t had a chance to hear the story from Mike, keep an eye out for it in a coming issue It was awesome to hear Mike share the amazing history of HSL!
Kerry Ginn, a Business Committee Member and Corpus Christi Lodge member, shared with me that Corpus Christi Lodge is cel-
ebrating 132 years and is also still going strong With the hard work of Cheryl and Ray Garcia, Kerry Ginn and so many members of the Hunt family (their family matriarch Pearl Hunt is an HSL legacy member) no doubt the Corpus Christi Lodge will be here for years to come
It’s so moving to see our lodges become like family, to break bread together while doing so many good works in the community It’s a blessing for us at the Home Office to be able to attend and we’re thrilled to do so Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you’d like to have one of your Home Office Executive Team members or a board member join you at one of your meetings or pin presentations We are here to help and love celebrating with you!
Thank you for all you do to help continue the legacy of Hermann Sons Life!

Howie’s Happenings
Visitors make it a fun month for Howie and Beau
By ROBIN CZARNEK President & CEOIt’s been a fun month for Howie and Beau. Howie just celebrated his first birthday and is weighing in at 77.2 pounds. He still thinks he is a lapdog and I love snuggling him, so we make it work. Beau is growing like crazy as well and is now quite a bit taller than Howie.
They’ve had visitors this month as we were granddog sitting Tig (Haley’s dog) and then welcomed Krypto for a visit as well. (He is Garrett and Haley’s dog – Haley is Garrett’s girlfriend, so we have two Haleys in the family.)
The boys are as adventurous as ever and have loved getting into mischief. They found a hose attached to a sprinkler and chewed a hole in the hose and made a huge mudhole to play in. We had quite the chaos as we chased them around trying to mitigate the damage. They had mud in the kitchen and living room, up the stairs
Home Office bowlers wrap up 2023 season
The Hermann Sons Life double league bowling teams wrapped up the 2023 season this spring. The Home Office employees and friends competed weekly at the Bowlero bowling alley in San Antonio.
Results for this year’s competition were Mike Beam and Dana Henderson, first place; John Kelly and Fannie Davis, second place; Jimmy Scheibe and Teresa Saathoff, third place; Cecily Kelly and Elaine Soto, fourth place; Quentin Henderson and Leonni Avalos, fifth place; James Smith and Candace Scheibe, sixth place; Cindy Ledwig and Amber Johnston, seventh place; and Katie Via and Carol Swan, eighth place.
League play will kick-off again in January 2024.
(on freshly shampooed carpet) and just about everywhere you can imagine. Never a dull moment with the boys and their friends!
Howie and Beau are still inseparable and play non-stop. They play pretty rough, and Howie had to have surgery on his ear. He got a puncture in his ear that hit a vein and it wound up causing his ear to swell up. We’ve been trying to keep these two calm but that’s no easy task with their puppy energy.
Howie and Beau wanted to share their adorable new friends, Dixie and Trixie with you. They are 4.5 months old Aussie Shepherd mixes that love playing with toys, playing in water and love to snuggle. Dixie and Trixie are just two of the many adorable pups of all kinds located at Heart of Texas SPCA/ HOT K9 Rescue.
If you’re interested in meeting them or any of the pups at HOTK9 or for more informa-
tion, please email: hotk9rescue@yahoo.com to schedule a time to meet them. For more information and to view all of the amazing dogs available for adoption, please check out Heart of Texas SPCA / HOTK9 Rescue on Facebook or at www.heartoftexasspca.com. Keep in mind that Heart of Texas SPCA/HOT K9 Rescue is a volunteer run organization, so email is best.
Always finding a way to entertain themselves, Howie, Beau and guest Tig found a way to chew their way through an outdoor hose and sprinkler and created themselves a nice mudhole and a muddy mess throughout the house.
Be on the lookout for Hermann Sons Life billboards!
By TERESA SAATHOFF Vice President of SalesHave you seen our billboards?
The Sales Department is excited to have six billboards going up in the rural areas close to San Antonio. We would love to hear from our current members when they spot one of our billboards, but we really want to hear from possible new members who see the signs and want to do business with a Texas life insurance company.
On the billboards, we added the phrase “Protecting Texas Families Since 1861” and that is an amazing accomplishment that all Hermann Sons Life members should be proud of.
Not very many companies have stood the test of time. Our mission statement of, “We strengthen community through financial protection and service,” is what Hermann Sons Life has believed and worked towards since 1861.
Every time there is a death claim made against a Hermann Sons Life policy, it means that a member cared about those they were leaving behind and thought in advance to purchase protection for them.
Do you have enough life insurance or know a family who needs life insurance? Have you considered how much a funeral costs and what services are not
covered in a prepaid funeral or a veteran’s funeral?
In my new position, I am sometimes asked to sign death claim checks. Death claims are a common occurrence at Hermann Sons Life, and it is what our company is all about. When a family member can file a death claim to help with financial needs, that is truly a gift from their departed loved one. When a beneficiary receives money from a life insurance policy, the money is tax free and there are not very many things in today’s world that are tax free.
Hermann Sons Life wants to continue the legacy of providing protection for Texas families.

SAN ANTONIO – Vice President of Sales Teresa Saathoff announced a new agent has joined the Hermann Sons Life Sales Team.
Kyle Hartmann, a resident of La Grange, joined the Hermann Sons Life Sales Team in July 2023. Kyle has been a member for 28 years and is a member of Rutersville Lodge. His coverage area is La Grange, Rutersville and Paige. Kyle graduated from Blinn College and Sam Houston State University.
“I am a life-time member of Rutersville Lodge and have been an active member since a young age,” he said. “I cherish the relationships and activities that Hermann Sons Life membership has provided me, and I look forward to sharing this op-
Kyle Hartmannportunity with others.”
Kyle is also an active member of the La Grange Rotary Club, Fayette County Habitat for Humanity and the Fayette County Community Theatre.
“I am so happy to welcome Kyle, a fellow member,” Teresa said. “He’s eager to get out there and grow Hermann Sons Life.”
Chris Naughton, Krystal Wilson and Lorene Bielke for District 2. Agents recognized on the Last Agent Standing list through the month of June were Gary Falkenberg, Chris Naughton, Angela Netherton, Reagan Rogiers, Gladys Rowley and Celeste Salge. These agents have written at least one application each month of the year so far.
Recently the Saathoff family enjoyed an impromptu family reunion and we were excited to catch up and reminisce with Uncle Arlie Brucks who was born in Hondo, Texas in 1929. Arlie and his wife Jan moved from Texas to Minnesota several years back to be near their daughter Cyndi. Sadly, the trip was made without Aunt Jan who recently passed away. Since Arlie was not able to attend a Hondo Lodge meeting to receive his 75-year pin, I personally presented it to him after we had dinner at the Hermann Sons Steak House in Hondo.

Scholarship recipients share their Camp experience
Cont’d from Pg. 1
In her essay, Kaitlyn wrote: “Growing up, like most kids, I would anticipate the summer. I would sit in my teachers’ classrooms those last weeks of school daydreaming about all the exciting things that were to come. However, while most kids were just happy to be out of school, I was over the moon and could not wait until it was time to head off to camp for a week. Over the years, Hermann Sons Life Camp has become my second home that I can’t wait to return to each summer. In addition to the experiences and lifelong memories I have created at camp each summer, I also am grateful for the qualities I’ve received by attending camp.
“Being at camp really made me an outgoing person. Every summer, I never came with kids that I knew, so I would have to break out of my shell and make friends with everyone at the camp from my fellow campers to the staff. I honestly believe that going to camp from a young age helped me with not being so shy or afraid of people.
“While being outgoing is a huge part of who I am, the one thing that camp taught me that I still carry with me to this day is my empathy towards others.
“The biggest part of camp that has shaped who I am is the CIT Program. This has taught me many skills to use in my daily life on how to be a great leader. I feel more confident knowing I can handle difficult situations and am someone others look up to and trust. I have been able to use these skills at school by serving as president of Theatre, Band Council, and Student Council.
“Camp has helped me become the person I am today in more ways than one and I am forever grateful for the time I had as a camper, and I love going back every summer to help kids who are just like me find a place where they belong and can learn these needed life skills.”
Tamara Dawn Otto is a member of Schulenburg Lodge. She will attend Texas A&M University to study kinesiology-motor be-
havior and is planning a career as a labor and delivery nurse. She is the daughter of Keith and Stacy Otto.
Tamara was valedictorian of her class. She was active in 4-H, FFA, National Honor Society, Student Council and UIL. She earned TGCA All-State Volleyball, AVCA Best and Brightest Award, Academic All-District volleyball, basketball, softball and tennis, Blinn College Mu Alpha Theta and NCA AllAmerican Cheerleader.
Tamara was a Camp CIT-1 and CIT-2 and a counselor.
In her essay, Tamara wrote, “Have you found a welcoming place that you consider your home away from home? Most people consider their friend’s house or a vacation spot their home away from home; however,
I am blessed to have discovered this gem deep in the rolling hills of the Texas Hill Country. In the small town of Comfort, Texas, the fresh smell of warm bread and sweet chocolate chip cookies filling the dining hall as young girls pile into it singing camp songs at the top of their lungs is a core memory from my home away from home. Being a Hermann Sons Life Camper has positively shaped me into the person I am today in many ways, for it has helped me gain confidence, responsibility, authentic friendship and teamwork skills.
“...Camp allowed me to explore and gain the confidence I needed to try something new. My sisters were big “sport girls” and so was I, but I wanted something to set me apart. I wanted to be different from them. Camp gave me this opportunity.
“While at camp, I was also able to learn valuable time management skills. Not knowing what time it was, I was able to focus on using my time wisely in the mornings, afternoon, and nights. Now, when it comes to time management, keeping track of things, and other responsibility skills, it has become part of my daily routine back home.
“Making authentic friendships was not only my favorite part of camp but was also very helpful in helping me be myself. I learned that teamwork goes hand and
hand with friendship and that caring and leaning on one another for support is not a bad thing. Through Hermann Sons Life Camp, I learned how to be kind and trustworthy while making friends. We have been through everything together, from campers to counselors! To this day, they are still some of my closest friends that I would not trade for the world!
“Overall, Hermann Sons Life Camp has provided me with such a memorable childhood as I am now able to be confident, responsible, work well with others, and create even more authentic friendships! Everything that I have been able to accomplish and overcome outside of camp is due to what I have learned in the dorms, dining hall, and courtyard of camp, and for that, I will forever be thankful. This little camp is truly my home away from home!”
Ashlyn Brooke Pesek is a member of Shiner Lodge. She graduated from St. Paul High School. She will attend Texas A&M University to study telecommunications media studies and is planning a career as an editor, publisher or screenwriter. She is the daughter of Jeff and Anne Pesek.
In high school, Ashlyn was active in student government, Catholic Daughters of America, track, volleyball, basketball and softball earning all-district and championship honors, One Act Play, National Honor Society, Youth Ministry, Bluebonnet Girls State, 4-H and participated in community service for several organizations.
At Camp, she earned the Star CIT Award, the Star Staff Award and was a camp counselor and lifeguard.
crowd. Hovering by the cookie station, I kept to myself until one counselor came up and offered to have a cookie with me. We talked about camp and ate the most delicious sweets known to man. Afterwards, she taught me the line dances and I finally began to have fun at the dance. Although our conversation is one of the past, her kindness encouraged me and gave me a sense of confidence which I have carried with me ever since.
In her essay, Ashlyn wrote, “Summer, for most people, is a time of relaxation, soaking up the sun, and spending time with friends. For me however, summer has always been a bit of a burden. I do not love the Texas heat, beaches are sandy, and endless free time leaves me bored and restless. While I may sound like the ‘Grinch Who Stole Summer,’ all it took was one botched schedule, a couple of chocolate chip cookies, and a rock, to change my perspective on summer and on life.
“The first time I turned down Hermann Sons road was on July 28th, 2014. It was my first time at camp and I was extremely apprehensive about the idea of living with twenty other nine-year-olds for a whole week. Curiosity eventually got the better of me, and into the Mosquito cabin I went. I set up my bed, looked around and took it all in. When it came time to get my schedule, I glanced at the slip of paper in my hand and saw Swimming. Not recreational swim where I could hang out with my friends and play, but classic swimming, with strokes, treading water, and more strength than I was willing to exert. Although I had no idea how to swim properly and did not like to swim, I decided to stick with the class, and it quickly became my favorite. Seven years later I came back to Riverside as both a counselor and a lifeguard.
“The camp dance is the best part of the week. Thirteen-yearold me, however, did not think so. The other girls in the Hawk cabin prepared all week for the dance, and when the night finally came, they were excited, confident, and the life of the party. As much as I tried, I was never so cool in a
“As a camper all I wanted was to be a counselor. I wanted the matching shirt, the nickname, and the authority to talk over the intercom. Beginning in the summer of 2022, I once again passed through the gates of Riverside where I was able to fulfill my childhood goal. Within the first two weeks on staff, I had already gained lifelong friends. I met my future college roommate, my best friend, and a group of people who loved and supported me unlike anyone ever had.
“During staff week, a group of my counselor friends took a trip to a nearby swimming hole. We swam, listened to music, and told stories until we were crying from laughter. I remember one of my friends picking up a rock from the river and handing it to me. He called it a friendship rock, and as long as I kept the rock, the magic of camp friendship would live forever. Whenever I am sad or down, I look at that rock on my car dashboard and remember the love and community of Hermann Sons Camp. While camp has always been one of my favorite places, it was not until I spent my first summer on staff when I realized that this place I had known so well had become a home and the people, a family.
“It is hard to explain the magic of camp, because it is hard to imagine the person I would be today without it. Through my experience at Hermann Sons, I have learned curiosity, courage, and how much fun summer can be. While I may only get to go through the gates of Riverside a few times a year, the lessons and influence of camp will surely last a lifetime.”

Volunteers care for cemetery
SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio
Hermann Sons Home Association members participated in two volunteer events in June at the historic Hermann Sons Cemetery in San Antonio. It is the final resting place for more than 1,600 members and family members from across the state with gravestones dating back to the 1880s.
Members of the Home Association in San Antonio have been caring for the cemetery for the last two years after learning the Cemetery Association was no longer in place and the cemetery needed care. With almost six acres of land, it can take hundreds of man hours to keep this cemetery fully maintained.
Chris Naughton, board member of the Home Association and member of Siemering Lodge, has worked with J.R. Knuepper, also a board member and member of Mission-Alamo Lodge, to secure volunteers from the Home Association as well as from other local organizations.
On Flag Day, Siemering Lodge members Donnie O’Connor, Christian Lee and Jeff Turner placed flags at the grave sites.
In mid-June, Chris, J.R., and Siemering Lodge members Ter-
ry Haecker and Mark Lee volunteered to mow and landscape as a fellow Hermann Sons Life family member was going to be laid to rest the following week.
After the services, Chris received a note from the family of the deceased that read, “Thank you so much for getting the graveside cleaned up and looking so nice. It was very nice to have it all looking so good as we laid our mother to rest.”
“We are proud to be able to serve the Hermann Sons Life members across the state,” Chris said. “They deserve to have a final resting place that is cared for, and it is important that we continue to honor them.”
The Hermann Sons Cemetery is located east of downtown San Antonio off South New Braunfels Avenue. For information on how to volunteer, call Chris at 210226-5432.

Square Dance Club attends State Festival
By Harold Dillashaw Alamo Area PresidentHello readers! It’s been warm, but hey the heat has got to break eventually. Once again congratulations to our new graduates. They dance very well, but that’s because club caller Wayne Weston did another excellent job of teaching.
We completed the State Festival in Bryan June 15-18. The turnout was fantastic and every caller, cuer, contra leader
and line dance instructor there is to be complimented. Especially Wayne Weston, John Kepheart, John Carlton, Lissa Bengston, our contra leader who won her admission to nationals in Milwaukee, Wis. next year. All of them did an outstanding job!
We celebrated the Fourth of July at our first dance night in July. If you don’t know how to square dance, come on down to the Hermann Sons Life San
Antonio Home Association building on St. Mary’s Street, just north of Caesar Chavez (Durango). You’ll find out just how easy it is to square dance!
Ron and Pat will be there, even though Pat just recently had hip surgery and is moving, but moving carefully.
Don’t let the heat get to you, get out and enjoy the fun.
Remember a square dancer is a friend you haven’t met yet!
Hope to see you there.
