SAN ANTONIO – Hermann Sons Life is now accepting donations for the Crabapple Fire Relief Fund under the OneStar Foundation.

Bowling Tourney

➤ Pg. 10-11

➤ Pg. 12-18

The fund will support individuals who lost or sustained damage to their homes, farmers and ranchers facing agricultural losses and other high-priority community needs identified in Gillespie County because of the fire.

According to the OneStar Foundation, the devastating Crabapple fire has scorched more than 9,500 acres near Fredericksburg,

leaving families without homes, farmers without fields and an entire community facing an uncertain future.

Donations will provide emergency aid, essential supplies and long-term recovery assistance to

help families rebuild their homes, restore their land and restart their businesses.

“Every dollar donated will help our neighbors get back on their feet and bring hope and relief,” Vice President of Member Benefits Cecily Kelly said.

Cecily announced lodge donations can be submitted in lieu of a Join Hands Day project.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of the Crabapple Fire and we are honored to support them and accept donations

on their behalf,” President and CEO Robin Czarnek said. “Thank you to all our members who have expressed interest in helping our neighbors through this tragedy.”

Monetary donations will be collected through May 9. Send to: Attention: Haley Blaylock, P.O. Box 1941, San Antonio, Texas 78297. The OneStar Foundation is a nonprofit created to further volunteerism and community service in Texas. To learn more about the foundation, visit onestarfoundation.org.

President's Message

Acts of kindness can make all the difference

As we approach Easter, a time of renewal and hope, I’ve been reflecting on how simple acts of kindness – like helping a co-worker, neighbor or even a stranger can bring light into the world So many of our Hermann Sons Life staff and members make an impact in ways that may not always be visible yet still make a profound difference in others’ lives Even small gestures can brighten someone’s day and create a ripple effect that leads to lasting change

Here are just a few examples of the kindness I’ve witnessed recently:

Darla Howell has been a member of the HSL Home Office staff for more than 16 years Every morning, before anyone else arrives, Darla goes through the office, making sure everything is ready for the day Because of her efforts, when we walk in, the lights are on, and the office is warm and welcoming – details that set a positive tone for the entire day

Our Vice President of Sales Teresa Saathoff recently shared a story about LaWanda Gibbons, who has been with HSL for nearly 24 years After Teresa broke her ankle, she took an Uber from the office to a doctor’s appointment, not wanting to inconvenience anyone despite offers to drive her LaWanda

made sure Teresa wasn’t navigating the situation alone – she verified the Uber driver, helped Teresa get settled in the car, carried her items, and ensured she got on her way safely These may seem like small gestures, but to Teresa, they made all the difference

Then there’s the story of my friend, Mindy She received an unexpected call from a stranger who had found their dog, Abby Unbeknownst to the rescuer, Abby had been missing for four years Mindy and her son, Paxton, had been heartbroken over losing her and thought they would never see her again .

They never dreamed she would return home four years later Abby was found wandering

Lodge Reports

Abby was missing for four long years when a stranger's act of kindness helped get her back home to her loving family.

through an apartment complex and her rescuer took the time to check for a microchip Because of this simple act of kindness, Abby was reunited with her family after years apart Incredibly, she settled right back in as if no time had passed – though she hasn’t left Mindy and Paxton’s side since! Noticing these acts of kindness has been a powerful reminder that making a difference doesn’t require a huge time commitment or grand gestures A smile, hold-

ing a door open, or offering a kind word can be all it takes to brighten someone’s day

As we celebrate this season of hope and renewal, I encourage you to join me in looking for ways to spread kindness . It’s a beautiful way to put our motto of Friendship, Love, and Loyalty into action “A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions and the roots spring up and make new trees ” ~ Amelia Earhart

GCCAC – Mending injured minds, hearts and souls

SEGUIN – The Guadalupe County Children’s Advocacy Center (GCCAC) is a nonprofit organization serving children and families in Guadalupe County when there are allegations of abuse or neglect, primarily child sexual abuse and physical abuse. We work alongside our partners in law enforcement, child protective services, prosecution, CASA, and medical and mental health professionals to ensure Safety, Justice, and Healing to the children and families we collectively serve.

Coordinators work with the team to identify client and case needs and make referrals to those specific services within our agency.

One of the first services children usually receive through the GCCAC is a forensic interview. Specially trained forensic interviewers conduct childfriendly, non-leading, developmentally appropriate forensic interviews of children for the purpose of investigations into criminal offenses and child safety concerns.

These interviews serve as the child’s statement for the purposes of the investigation. By conducting these forensic interviews, the GCCAC aims to reduce the re-victimization of children by eliminating duplicative interviewing by multiple investigators who all need to know very similar information.

The GCCAC also provides family advocacy and support to the child’s non-offending, supportive caregiver. This can include

provision of resources, referrals, and crisis intervention. We aim to support the person who the child will remain with so that

they can fully support the child. In addition to the forensic interviewers and family advocates, the GCCAC also has nine full-time therapists and up to four therapy interns. These professionals provide fee-free, trauma-informed, evidencebased therapy services to children and their non-offending caregivers to facilitate healing. The therapists use many different modalities or interventions to work with children and caregivers.

We also conduct monthly

case review meetings with all of our partner agencies where we talk about all of the cases that have come through our doors since the last meeting and any that were unresolved at the last meeting. The goal is to keep kids and their cases from falling through the cracks.

At GCCAC, we provide education in the community about how to recognize and report suspected abuse and also primary prevention with children so they know what to do if someone tries to hurt them.

Some statistics of interest:

• We have conducted more than 9,050 forensic interviews of children and provided over 22,300 counseling sessions completely free of charge since opening our doors in 2004.

In 2024, the GGCAC served 903 children and their non-offending caregivers.

• We are here to make sure that each child’s well-being remains the focus of our work together as we strive for Safety, Justice, and Healing for all children and families we serve.

GCCAC has several events planned this year. Please refer to our website, www.gccac.net to learn more about our events and our organization or follow our Facebook page. You can also call our office at 830-3034760 or email us for information at gccacinfo@gccac.net.

Camp News

Workday volunteers help get camp site ready

Executive Camp Director

Greetings from Comfort!

I want to send out a massive thank you to all the campers, CITs, parents, staff members and volunteers who helped make our Volunteer Workday on March 15 successful. Everything on my “to do” list was accomplished. Thanks to Stacy, Riley and Kinsley Korczynski, Ryan and Staycer Broglie, Peter Krupka, Sebastian Godfrey (who successfully set up the pickleball net and more), Hercules and David Cervenka, Paul and Shelly Pankratz, Cecily, John, Kenobi and Anakin Kelly, Crockett, Squints, Superman, Gizmo, 9 to 5, Wipe Out, Melissa Preuss, Jordyn Barnes, Clay Haley and Nick Chapman from Parkway Advisors.

Group Rentals

The Camp got a major jump start in looking its best for the busy spring and summer we have planned. We have been ramping up our group rentals and we’re really starting to grow that side of the business. Utilizing the Hilltop facility generates income and that’s important in keeping camp prices down and below the cost of other comparable summer camps. Groups have rented the facilities for March, April and May. We host church retreats, band camps, Girl and Boy Scout troops, weddings and family reunions. It’s a great value for youth groups. If you know any groups that would benefit from renting our facility, please spread the word. For more information on rentals, visit hermannsonslife.orgMember Benefits - Camp.

Enrollment

In 2024 we opened enrollment on March 20. This year, enrollment opened on Jan. 19 exclusively to members and we’re well ahead of our expectations. Registration for non-members opened on March 15. While there is space available in all sessions, due to the camp being held at one facility limiting capacity and non-members now

The Camp Volunteer Workday held in March was a success thanks to all the hard-working volunteers including Ryan Broglie and Parkway Advisors volunteer Nick Chapman.

enrolling, we strongly suggest enrolling sooner rather than later!

Session availability as of March 17:

Session One - June 15-21: 20 boy and 36 girl spots available;

Session Two - July 6-12: 9 boy and 32 girl spots available;

Session Three - July 13-19 is 53% full for boys and 39% full for girls;

Session Four - July 20-July 26 is 39% full for both boys and girls;

Session Five - July 27- Aug. 2 is 38% full for boys and 50% full for girls;

Ten-Day Session- June 22-July 2 is 31% full for boys and 36% full for girls;

Mini-Camp - Aug. 3-6 is 51% full for boys and 18% full for girls. Open House!

The annual Open House will be held on Saturday, June 7, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Bring your friends and family for a great day of swimming, challenge course, archery, dance, crafts, tours and more! We love our open house events. We’re excited to see you here!

Lodge donations

I’ve been asked by a few members for a shopping list of items their individual lodge can donate to the camp. While we do have items that need to be purchased as camp nears, the most need is for maintenance

and upkeep of the facility. As I mentioned before, we’re using the facility more for rentals to generate revenue, so every little bit helps. The Hilltop facility is 30 years old and we’re running into longevity issues. Two water heaters, each more than 20 years old, have needed to be replaced in the last three months. Any donations are greatly appreciated. Keeping traditions alive

One of the challenging aspects of putting together a coed camp is blending the different traditions each camp site held dear. I’m excited with the work that has been done to blend the boy and girl camps and want to reassure our parents while somethings will be different, it will still feel very similar to other summers.

Morning shows

Wake up morning shows performed by our senior staff are awesome. It’ll definitely be an eclectic blend of music this year. Expect Disney, country, Swifty and more. The wake-up song for 2025 is “Safe and Sound”.

Flagpole

We will be raising and lowering the flag daily. It is important to keep this foundational cornerstone each day. We pledge allegiance to the American and Texas flags each morning.

Singing and dancing Riverside Camp (girls) was

always full of song. We will be singing a lot this summer. From traditional repeat after me songs like “Piece of Tin”, “Little Red Wagon” etc., which will be sung before every lunch and dinner to dorm songs that will be created for Hilltop this summer! Camp is a happy place!

Taps and grateful circles

We love to end each day by gathering in small group circles and letting each other know what we are grateful for that day. I love closing each day with thankfulness!

Stargazing

We wanted more stargazing at camp so each dorm will be scheduled time to allow campers to go out under the stars and

look on in amazement at the beauty of the skies at our wonderful location.

Mealtimes

We spend two and half hours a day in the dining hall. This is where a lot of the great conversations and memories occur. We’re going to have a blast this summer with some themed meals. Our CITs will lead two camp songs before every lunch and dinner. We’ll then sing the prayer and once we start the meal, we play lots of upbeat music until it’s time for seconds and then we play line dance music. Of course, we still have the spatula, who has Hermann? and the nurses chant. I love mealtime at Hermann Sons Life Camp!

Life insurance relieves financial stress for loved ones

At my last monthly lodge meeting, as usual I sat next to one of my favorite lodge members. We traded family stories and showed each other pictures on our phones and even talked about what food to serve at our next lodge meeting. Little did I know that in less than 48 hours, my sweet friend would unexpectedly pass away.

Moments like that are sobering reminders of how unpredictable life can be. It makes you reflect on whether you have taken the right steps to protect your loved ones and ensure they are cared for if the unthinkable happens. Having enough life insurance is a crucial part of that planning. It is not just about covering expenses; it is about providing peace of mind and a legacy of support. My friend’s sudden passing was truly shocking to me and it made me stop and think about whether my husband and I have

done everything to make sure our loved ones know how much they mean to us and whether or not we have things in order so our final wishes are honored. Yes, we did a will when our children were younger, but we have not bothered to update it over the years and our children are now all adults. Updating our will is now on our to do list and we need to also take the time to organize all our financial information to make it easier on our family one day.

Agent Laura Tiffin, left, has retired as a Hermann Sons Life agent after 18 years of service. Laura, an HSL Board Director since 2022, was recognized at the Home Office recently and was presented a certificate of appreciation by President and CEO Robin Czarnek. Laura was an award-winning agent achieving Executive Club and Million Dollar Club membership several times. She has been a member since Oct. 25, 1961, and is a member of Cuero Family Lodge.

During my 20 years at Hermann Sons Life, I have met with customers who have had all their financial affairs, account information and final wishes organized in notebooks and files. What an incredible gift for their families to receive during an emotionally challenging time. There are things we can all do before it is too late to help our families have a way to pay for everything associated with a funeral and to help avoid family conflict.

1. Reduce stress and confusion

By clearly documenting your wishes and financial details, you eliminate uncertainties that can cause stress among family members. This allows them to focus on grieving and supporting each other rather than trying to figure out your intentions.

2. Prevent family disputes

Specific instructions regarding your asset distribution and personal belongings helps prevent potential conflicts among your family. Discussing these plans in advance helps everyone understand and respect your decisions.

3. Ensure financial stability

Organizing financial documents and updating beneficiaries guarantees that assets are transferred smoothly, providing financial security for your loved ones without unnecessary legal hurdles.

4. Honor your final wishes

Documenting your preferences for medical care, funeral arrangements, and other personal matters ensures your family can honor your wishes without added stress or uncertainty.

5.

Estate settlement

A well-prepared estate plan can reduce the time and costs associated with legal fees and costs associated with probate.

Organizing your affairs is a final gift to your family and provides them with a clear picture of your final wishes.

When thinking of the many things to do when it comes to your final wishes, please remember Hermann Son Life can help you evaluate the amount of life insurance coverage you currently have or possibly need.

Every time I sign a death claim check, I think how thoughtful and caring that the member who passed away was to financially protect their family by having life insurance in place.

zations and my love and passion for dance and youth programs,”

Cecily said. “I have learned more than I could have ever imagined from the people who have mentored me – not only from my bosses, but from the staff and members too. I look forward to learning more every day!

“I am a wife of 22 years to my best friend John and love our two boys, Heydon, almost a 21-year-old college student and

Brennan, an 18-year-old high school senior.

Howie’s Happenings

Howie and Beau remain on the naughty list

NEW

– It seems Howie and Beau are trying to make sure they stay on the naughty list and have been outdoing themselves at that! They say a picture is worth a thousand words and I am sure once you see the picture, you’ll see why they’re still on the naughty list in a big way!

With the weather improving, we’ve been taking the boys for walks, but it seems like we can’t burn enough of their energy to keep them out of trouble.

Dave took them to the groomer and chaos commenced. Neither of the boys enjoy water or grooming one bit, so it’s never easy to get them into the groomers and this time was no exception. The boys decided to escape and were running through the parking lot to escape their baths. Thankfully, they are good boys at heart despite their antics and both came back to Dave quickly.

To add to their shenanigans,

rainbow sprinkles for a batch of sugar cookies I was gifting for someone’s birthday disappeared right in the middle of making them. I cannot turn my back for even a second. Beau, being the counter surfer he is, was able to sneakily steal the rainbow sprinkles right from under my nose just when I was about to use them. Let’s just say they definitely tasted the rainbow, and their poop has never been more colorful!

The boys wanted to introduce you to their precious friends Aspen and Juno. These girls are the sweetest girls and are always so happy to greet you with happy wags and kisses. Even though they haven’t had a great start in life, you would never know it by their loving demeanor. The girls get along well, but they do not have to be adopted together. They will be thrilled to have their very own homes.

If you’re interested in meeting Aspen and Juno or any of the other pups at HOTK9, please email hotk9rescue@yahoo.com

Rutersville to meet April 2

ect were approved at the March meeting.

Attendance prize winners were JoAnn Mueller, Nancy Krueger, Norman Schultz, Kyle Hartmann and Theresa Garlin.

The lodge recognized anniversary celebrants Wayman and Nancy Krueger, 47 years.

Everyone enjoyed a dinner of sausage, sauerkraut, sides and desserts.

youth participant. Sponsorship opportunities are available.

For more information on these events, visit the lodge’s Facebook page, Seguin Hermann Sons Lodge #37.

The lodge welcomed several new junior members in February.

Members approved hiring a contractor to erect equipment on the roof to raise the electrical loop going into the building.

It was reported the lodge was successful in the tax-exempt appeal to the Guadalupe County Appraisal District resulting in a pending refund of previously paid property taxes.

It was also reported the lodge will have a new neighbor – a gas station/convenience store will be built next to the hall and there is interest in some of the lodge property to expand their footprint. President Tim Kolbe will be the board contact for any negotiations.

Tim and Vice President Brian Beutnagel were thanked for spreading base and reclaimed asphalt to fill in low areas and fill potholes in the parking lot. They also built a new pad for the dumpster and moved it closer to the side delivery door. Tim bought and hauled the material, and Brian used his tractor to ap-

ply the materials.

Agent Annette Roecker reported that HSL agents will be taking continuing education courses online.
