Hermann Sons Life organizes Texas Wildfire Relief Fund

SAN ANTONIO – In response to the disastrous Texas Panhandle wildfires, Hermann Sons Life has organized a Texas Wildfire Relief Fund.

“In keeping with the mission of Hermann Sons Life, we want to do our part to help those affected by the devastating fires as they now face recovery,” Vice President of Member Benefits Cecily Kelly said.

According to the “Texas Tribune,” the nearly three-week

TEXAS WILDFIRE RELIEF FUND HERMANN SONS LIFE

battle that started in February became the largest wildfire in Texas history, burned more than 1 million acres across several counties and at least two people have died.

Many residents lost homes, farms and ranches and thousands of livestock were killed.

“We are still determining the areas and organizations most in need of aid,” Cecily said. “We are

doing our research and reaching out to volunteer fire departments and other community resources.”

Members and lodges are asked to join the Home Office in this effort. Monetary donations can be mailed to Hermann Sons Life, P.O. Box 1941, San Antonio, TX 78297. Donations may also be made by credit card by calling 800-2344124, ext. 238.

President's Message

Safeguarding the interests of Hermann Sons Life a priority

Thank you for your dedication and service to Hermann Sons Life, your fellow members and our communities throughout Texas You may remember that HSL hosted two informational meetings earlier this year to discuss the various changes to the Bylaws of Local Lodges . Since we know many of you were unable to attend these sessions, we would like to provide you with some of the highlights The meetings stressed how vital it is for us to emphasize compliance and safeguard the interests of our members, lodges, Home Associations and all affiliates In the interest of best practices and considering ever changing regulations, changes were necessary to fortify our processes and protocols to protect our tax-exempt status, aid in the success of our lodges and ensure fiduciary due diligence is being done properly Our processes must prioritize the protection of our members, lodges and affiliates while making prudent decisions for the future of Hermann Sons Life . Through these meetings and in speaking with members since, we have been made aware of misconceptions and confusion

regarding the reasons for the bylaw changes These changes were made to strengthen our lodge governance process and align with best practices for fraternal benefit societies There is nothing in these changes intended to undermine or destroy our lodge system or the wonderful work you are doing in your communities .

We are committed to serving our members with integrity and transparency We urge against spreading of misconceptions and unfounded rumors that have the potential to damage our organization's legacy and hinder our mission of strengthening communities through financial protection and service We urge you to contact any one of our Executive Officers at the Home Office and we will be happy to hear and address your concerns and answer any questions you may have . You are also always welcome to provide constructive suggestions for further improvement of the lodge bylaws now or in the future These suggestions are reviewed by the Bylaws of Local Lodges Committee which has the authority under Title 6 of the Hermann Sons Life Bylaws to consider and approve changes to the Bylaws of Local Lodges

By working together, we can continue the rich history our founders worked so hard to build over the last 160+ years and safeguard the interests of every member

We are truly honored to be part of such a wonderful organization that gives back to its members and their communities in so many positive ways . With your help, we can ensure future generations are able to enjoy it for another 160 years YOU are the lifeblood of our organization and thank you for being the best part of Hermann Sons Life!

Answers to common questions

Ql. Is Hermann Sons Life experiencing financial difficulties and looking to raise funds by merging lodges and selling their property?

Al. No, this is not happening There is no intention to merge active lodges to sell lodge property Doing so would be contradictory to our mission and requirements as a fraternal organization . As of the last financial statement, Hermann Sons Life had nearly $248 million in admitted assets, over $1 billion of insurance in force, over $6 4 million in surplus and a solvency ratio of $102 67

We have included a financial summary on our website at hermannsonslife org/who-weare/financial-information

It is important to note that lodge property is restricted to use for the charitable and fraternal mission of HSL Lodge funds or properties cannot be diverted into the general account of HSL to support our insurance operations

Of course, if a lodge becomes inactive, HSL may need to intervene to make sure that assets are redeployed for lodge, charitable, and fraternal purposes, consistent with HSL's mission and its tax exemption requirements As a tax-exempt fraternal under 501(c)(8), any other use of these assets would be prohibited .

Q2. Is Hermann Sons Life intending to sell its Home Office building in San Antonio?

A2. After 74-years of servicing members from the Hermann Sons Life property located at 515 S St Mary's Street on the riverwalk in downtown San Antonio, HSL is considering options to sell the property and move to a new, smaller location that better fits our needs

Answers to common questions

Cont’d from Pg. 2

The decision is part of our strategic planning to invest in our growth and our long-term sustainability. This is not a new concept as it will be the third time the Home Office operations have been relocated in the history of our organization. We have listed the property and have been encouraged by the interest in the property. However, as of March 15, 2024, there has been no offer accepted.

Q3. What is happening with the home office parking lots?

A3. For many years, the long parking lot just North of the Home Office building was managed by a Home Association which retained 80% of the revenue from the HSL parking lot. Earlier this year, HSL entered into a new contract with a professional parking vendor that provides automation and a greater revenue source for HSL. These funds will be used to support fraternal and lodge programs that benefit our members and lodges. This contract will end if the Home Office building is sold.

Q4. Are the changes to the Bylaws of Local Lodges an attempt to take over local lodges or lodge affiliates?

A4. No. These changes were focused on implementing basic best practices that are in place in the fraternal benefit system as well as in other not-for-profit organizations with local chapters. These included changes to promote transparency and oversight and to help ensure that lodge funds are devoted exclusively to the charitable and fraternal activities permitted by

our tax exemption under 501(c) (8). This included reporting requirements for lodges to submit their financials and those of their controlled affiliates. This demonstrates our commitment to responsible financial management and transparency and ensures consistency throughout the organization.

Q5. Does HSL directly control lodge affiliates that are not themselves lodges, such as Home Associations?

A5. No. Local lodges are subordinate units of HSL. Under 501(c)(8) and the Texas Fraternal Code, lodges are subject to the requirements of the fraternal and are “largely self-governing.”

In this respect, the lodges are subject to the Laws of HSL, the Local Lodge Bylaws, lodge policies, procedures and requirements adopted by HSL, Texas law applicable to fraternal benefit societies, and the requirements of federal tax exemption under 501(c)(8). They are otherwise free to conduct their activities to support their members and communities in accordance with the mission of HSL.

The new bylaws provide for financial reporting and transparency of all lodge operations by the lodges, including those that lodges conduct through controlled affiliates. However, there is no intent to take over operations of lodges or lodge affiliates. Lodges and lodge affiliates are already required to report this financial information to the IRS annually and we do not expect that reporting this information to HSL and making it available to their own membership will be a hardship.

Planning for your financial future is essential

Life insurance and annuity products are a great way to secure your family's future and plan for retirement. It is never too late to determine your insurance and annuity needs, and Hermann Sons Life has products to fit every budget.

HSL Annuities

By opening a new annuity at Hermann Sons Life, you will earn 5% interest with a guarantee of 2.75% interest. An annuity contract with Hermann Sons Life allows your money to earn interest over time. We currently offer 5-year fixed annuities. A fixed annuity is a great way to grow your retirement savings and it provides a safer alternative to investing in the market. The interest you earn is tax deferred and you will not pay taxes on the interest until the money is paid out or you make a withdrawal.

Reasons to Buy Life Insurance

In today’s unpredictable world, planning for the future is essential. One of the most important aspects of this planning is securing the financial well-being of your loved ones, even after you are gone. This is where life insurance comes into play. While it may not be a topic everyone wants to dwell on, investing in life insurance offers numerous benefits that extend far beyond just financial secu-

Bonahoom joins Sales team

SAN ANTONIO – Stephen Jared Bonahoom has joined the Hermann Sons Life Sales team. His coverage areas are Castroville and Hondo.

Stephen has 13 years experience as a property and casualty agent and 11 years experience as a life and health insurance agent. He also has also worked in corporate insurance training.

A resident of Castroville, Stephen is married and has two children. The family enjoys sports and playing board games and have three pet dogs.

"We welcome Stephen and look forward to working with

him," Vice President of Sales Teresa Saathoff said. "His years of insurance experience are a great asset that will serve him well at Hermann Sons Life."

rity. Below are seven reasons to purchase life insurance: Protect your loved ones: The primary purpose of life insurance is to provide financial protection for your family in the event of your death. By naming beneficiaries, you ensure that they receive a lump sum payment, known as the death benefit, which can help cover living expenses, mortgage payments, education costs, and more.

Cover funeral expenses:

Funeral and burial costs can be substantial, often running into thousands of dollars. Life insurance can alleviate this burden on your family by covering these expenses allowing them to focus on grieving and healing rather than worrying about finances.

Pay off debts:

Many people have outstanding debts such as mortgages, car loans or credit card balances. Life insurance can be used to pay

off debts, preventing your loved ones from inheriting those debts and easing their financial strain during an already challenging time.

Replace lost income:

If you are the primary breadwinner in your family, your sudden passing could leave your family without a reliable source of income, therefore, having life insurance in place could help replace your lost income so your family can maintain their current standard of living. Also, life insurance plays a crucial role in estate planning by providing liquidity to cover estate taxes, legal fees and other expenses associated with the settling of an estate.

Business continuity:

For business owners, life insurance can be an invaluable tool for ensuring business continuity in the event of their death. It can be used to protect key employees or provide a source of capital for the business to weather the

transition.

Peace of mind:

Perhaps the most significant benefit of life insurance is the peace of mind it offers. Knowing that your loved ones will be financially secure in your absence can provide immense comfort and relief allowing you to live your life to the fullest without worrying about what the future may hold.

Life insurance is a very important part of financial planning. Whether you are starting a family, buying a home or planning for retirement, investing in life insurance ensures that your loved ones will be taken care of no matter what life throws their way. Please do not delay – call Hermann Sons Life today to take the first step towards securing your family’s future today.

Michael, 32, was a fit and healthy family man. As he left to run a 10K race, he kissed his wife, Traci, good-bye along with newborn Calvin and “big” sister Josie. He never made it home.

As he crossed the finish line, Michael collapsed and died. The Kovacic family would never be the same.

Thankfully, they had life insurance. Even though the young couple had been living paycheck to paycheck, their insurance professional had convinced them to buy an affordable policy.

Traci says the hardest part for her was knowing that the love of her life was never coming home. “But the reality is that everything else stayed the same,” she says. “The paychecks stopped immediately, but I still had to keep the lights on, buy food, pay the mortgage and take care of the kids. Having life insurance meant I didn’t have to make any immediate decisions or sell the house.”

“The life insurance saved us—and it still does today,” she says.

Camp News

Camp busy preparing for enrollment, opening

Ask any Camp Director what’s the one question you get asked the most when they find out you work for a summer camp, the answer is invariably, “So, what do you do the rest of the year?” Preparing for camp is a ten-month job. From analyzing the summer in August to staff development in May, there’s not much in the way of downtime.

When this article “hits the street” enrollment will be open for our summer camp 2024.

We are all very excited about this upcoming summer. Processing camp enrollment has moved to Comfort and Shelly Pankratz will be overseeing the process. If you have any questions in regard to how to enroll your kiddos, please email them to camp@hermannsonslife.org or call Shelly at 830-995-3223.

On the maintenance side of things, we have been very busy preparing the camps for our junior members. On Riverside, Clay has finished up working on the new archery range (double the size!) which will be able to handle campers’ demand for that activity. On Hilltop Camp, the pool is empty! We’re in the process of re-plastering the 200,000-gallon pool along with necessary plant and lighting improvements.

Speaking about maintenance, the volunteer workday is scheduled for April 13. This will be a great opportunity for Hermann Sons Life members to really help get the camp in tip-top condition for the summer. There will be jobs for all skill levels including painting, cleaning, yard work and so much more. The day begins at 9 a.m. Please contact Ian Brassett at ianb@hermannsonslife.org. We’d love to see you and certainly can use your help removing some of the dirt build up that only camps seem to be able to produce. If you have high school students looking for volunteer and/ or community service hours, or your lodge is looking for something to do for their

Hermann Sons Life community, we’d love to see all the helping hands we can get.

March was and is always a busy month at camp. From the processing of enrollment through purchasing activity supplies, hiring (NURSES), coordinating trainings to parental Zooms, the fun never stops until August!

I recently had a weekend strategy meeting with Casper and Webster, the new director and assistant director of Riverside Camp. What’s cool about Casper and Webster is that they are sisters and former Hermann Sons Life campers. I’m excited about having their many years of camp experience at the helm on Riverside.

This summer I will be taking a more active role in the day-today running of Hilltop Camp. My assistant director in this venture is Coconut. We spoke this morning at length about our plans for this upcoming summer.

Zoom calls

To help our parents and campers with their questions about Camp, I will be available to an-

swer questions and discuss all things summer camp through Zoom calls.

• March 23, 2024 – 9-10 a.m.

• April 14, 2024 – 9-10 a.m. Please email ianb@hermannsonslife.org to get on the emailing list.

Health History and other forms

I can already hear people saying “it’s too early” for Ian to be asking for me to complete the Health History Form. It’s not. Please complete the Health History form, Activity Selection Form and Dorm Request forms at your earliest convenience. Processing over 2,000 forms accurately takes time – which we do not have much of in June and July. As we move closer to the summer, if there are changes to your child’s health history, we will send you another form to update.

I’d like to finish by thanking everyone at the Home Office (especially Tammi), along with Heath, Clay and Shelly for all the work they do behind the scenes to help make camp a huge success. They are all integral in making Camp happen!

The rules of the tournament are listed below. Use the form to the right to enter a team.

For more information, contact Tournament Secretary Sandra Jones at 817-781-7155.

1. At least two members of the team must be a member of Hermann Sons Life as of July 27, 2024. Two non-members per team is allowed.

3. Handicap is 90% from 220 for each bowler per event.

4. IMPORTANT READ CAREFULLY: It shall be each bowler’s responsibility to determine that the submitted average is correct. Prize winnings shall be based on the submitted average if it is higher than the correct average. However, corrections in averages may be permitted up to the completion of the first game of a series. Every entry blank must have each bowler’s highest USBC Certified 20222023 book average based on 21 games or more at the time of participation in the tournament. Bowlers not having a 2021-2022 average must use highest 20222023 book average based on 21 games. Bowlers not having 2022-2023 or 2023-2024 book average must use 2024 Summer average of nine games or more in one league at time of participation.

Bowlers not having any of the above averages, but who bowled 9 games in the 2023 tournament may use the average for those 9 games in the 2024 tournament. USBC Rule 319(A-2) is waived (10 or more pins increase in average). A: 2022-2023 yearbook average.

Howie’s Happenings

Howie and Beau enjoy having visitors

Howie and Beau continue their mission to bring every limb, stick and 2x4 they can find and bring it into the house. While we wish they would leave the wood outside, we can’t help but be impressed with the size of the pieces of wood, etc. that they manage to sneak through the doggie door. We have every kind of toy imaginable for them, but they like to take those outside to play. While they’re both hot messes, we love them dearly and life would sure be boring without them!

The boys have had many guests this last month and they always enjoy the company. Tig, Krypto and Oakley (Krypto’s new brother) have all made a visit this month. They are always happy to have extra playmates to chase around and extra ears to chew on.

Howie and Beau wanted to share their friends, Mocha and Latte with you. Mocha and Latte are just two of the many adorable pups of all kinds located at Heart of Texas SPCA/ HOT K9 Rescue. Mocha and Latte are the sweetest girls. They have lots of energy and love to play. If you’re interested in meeting any of the pups at HOTK9 or for more information, please email: hotk9rescue@

yahoo.com to schedule a time to meet them. For more information and to view all of the amazing dogs available for adoption, please check out Heart of Texas SPCA / HOTK9 Rescue on Facebook or at www.heartoftexassp-

ca.com. You’ll also be able to see their adoption events where you can meet many of their precious pups. Keep in mind that Heart of Texas SPCA/HOT K9 Rescue is a volunteer run organization, so email is best.
