Camp seeking volunteers for workday

Enrollment is open for summer Camp 2023! We are all very excited about this upcoming summer. Based upon the early enrollments…so are you! The Camp enrollment process has been moved from the Home Office to the Camp office in Comfort. Please bear with us as we adjust to new procedures. As always, if you have any questions, please email them to camp@ hermannsonslife.org or call 830995-3223.

On the maintenance side of things, we have been very busy preparing the camps. At Riverside, three bathrooms are undergoing the final touches of a major renovation. The youngest campers in the Jackrabbit, Mosquito and Catfish cabins will love them! Brand new water soften-

ers have been installed at the Riverside and Hilltop kitchens. The shade structure on Riverside for softball has been completed. Speaking about maintenance, the Volunteer Workday is scheduled for Saturday, April 22. This is a great opportunity for Her-

mann Sons Life members to really help get the Camp sites in tip-top condition for the summer. There will be jobs for all skill levels including painting, cleaning, yard work and much more. The workday begins at 9 a.m. Please email ianb@hermann-

sonslife.org if interested. We’d love to see you and certainly can use your help removing some of the dirt build up that only camps seem to be able to produce.

Chili cook-off raises funds for scholarships

Hermann Sons Life Agent Brad Klein of Georgetown checks on his chili during the Retirement Home Chili and Pinto Bean Cook-off held March 11 in Comfort. Brad placed fifth in the amateur competition with his recipe. The event is sanctioned by the Chili Appreciation Society International (CASI). In addition to the cook-off, teams were judged for showmanship honors and a raffle was held. Proceeds are used for four $1,500 scholarships presented to eligible junior members. See winners and more photos on Pages 9 and 10.

President's Message Camp a great opportunity for kids to 'unplug'

Amazing things are happening in Comfort! Camp season is just around the corner, but preparations are already underway at the sites with so many exciting things to come this year!

If you haven’t had a chance to check out our Riverside and Hilltop Camps, I would encourage you to do so. Both our son, Garrett, and I, were blessed to be able to attend Hermann Sons Life Camp, but I can tell you, as great as it was then, it’s even better now. Our Executive Camp Director Ian Brassett and his team work hard to improve the experience and the facilities for our campers each and every year.

lodges, we have been able to do some much-needed renovations, including bathroom remodels, shade structures, new roofs just to name a few that will keep our camp facilities more comfortable and running smoothly for years to come. While there is still much work left to be done (as there always is), it’s thanks to the generosity of our lodges and members that we can make these things happen.

Camp is a place for kids to unplug from technology and just be a kid. Faith and patriotism are abundant, and kids and counselors alike can spend time making friends and memories that last a lifetime. In this day and age, with technology and social media so prevalent in our daily lives, it’s very important to set it all aside and just fellowship with others, and there is no better place for our kids to do this than at Camp.

With tremendous help from Edelweiss-Magnolia and Gulf

If you’re interested in learning more about camp, Ian is holding informational Zoom sessions and there are videos on YouTube that provide tours of both the Riverside and Hilltop camp sites. With the purchase of every financial product – whole life, term life, final expense, annuities and Medicare – not only are you securing your future and that of your family, but you are also helping to strengthen your HSL community by providing a wonderful environment for our junior members to be able to enjoy being a kid.

Dave and I really enjoyed participating in the Retirement Home's annual Chili and Beanoff held March 11 in Comfort. I entered my chili recipe, and we

both judged which is always a good time.

No, I did not win, but we sure enjoyed the day in the beautiful Hill Country and the weather was perfect. We especially enjoyed visiting with everyone there seeing old friends and making new ones.

Thank you to Member Benefits Department staff Tammi Sutherland and Leonni Avalos for organizing the Home Office team and to everyone who showed up to lend their support. The team's Hawaiian showmanship theme won first place!

Congratulations to all the amateur and CASI winners!

It's always so special seeing lodge members take part in this event and we hope to see more next year. It's all for such a great cause. Proceeds go toward the Retirement Home Scholarship Fund. Four $1,500 scholarships are awarded each year to firstyear college students who are members.

Make plans to attend next year, it's a great day of friendly competition and fellowship.

Thank you for all you do to support Hermann Sons Life!

Community Spotlight

SAN ANTONIO – Big Brothers

Program provides positive role models Employee Spotlight Thompson serves as Director of Information Technology

Big Sisters of South Texas is a mentoring program based in San Antonio and has branches in Brazos Valley, Comal and Guadalupe County, Texas Coastal Bend, Texas Hill Country and Uvalde.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is a volunteer-based organization supported 100 percent by donations from individuals, corporations and private foundations. The agency serves children by providing them with positive adult role models through school based, community based and workplace mentoring programs.

Every four minutes a student drops out of a Texas public school.

Children with a Big Brother or Big Sister mentor are more likely to:

• Make good choices

• Avoid risky behavior like drugs, alcohol and violence

• Complete high school and develop a post graduate plan

The program started in 1904, when a young New York City

juvenile court clerk named Ernest Coulter observed how many fatherless boys were coming through his courtroom. He recognized that these boys needed a positive adult role model to help them stay out of trouble.  So, he recruited the first 50 volunteers, and that marked the beginning of the Big Brothers movement. More than 100 years later, Big Brothers Big Sisters remains true to its founders’ vision to defend the potential of every child.

The program’s mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. The vision is to help all children achieve success in life.

Members reminded to do some 'spring cleaning'

The Sales Department is off to a good start for the first quarter of 2023. We are up by more than 50 applications compared to this time last year.

Our agents are starting to take advantage of DocuSign, SalezShark and completing their RegEd classes. We have offered to give individual training to even our most seasoned agents, and it is refreshing when an agent wants to sharpen their knowledge of our products and takes advantage of the new tools in place to help them be a

better agent.

The Sales Department is focused on bringing new motivated, licensed agents onboard. We need to cover areas where agents have retired, and we need to build our sales force in the towns that are experiencing overwhelming growth. If you or anyone you know has interest in becoming a Hermann Sons Life agent, please reach out to me at 210-892-0292 or by email at teresas@hermannsonslife.org.

Spring brings spring cleaning to mind and it is always a good time to review your personal life insurance and annuities. Exist-

ing members:

• Is your beneficiary information up to date?

• Is your home address correct?

• Has your name changed?

• Is your phone number up to date? We cannot reach some of our members because they have done away with their landline, and we have no way of looking up cell phone numbers.

• Do you know how much coverage you have with Hermann Sons Life and is it enough in todays’ economic market?

To make updates to your policies, you can access our change forms online at hermannsonslife.

org or you can call the Home Office at 210-226-9261. If you want to review your existing policies and products, you can call your agent or call the Sales Department at 210-527-9113.

Camp season is just around the corner and registration is underway. The Sales Department is here to help new members with the insurance application process. Not only do we offer junior life insurance, which will make a child eligible to attend our Camp, but we also offer adult whole life and term insurance, annuities that are earning 4 percent interest and we are now certified to

offer Medicare to our new and existing members. Because we are a full-service life insurance company, we want to take care of entire families and give them the opportunity to join Hermann Sons Life by purchasing our life insurance or annuity products.

On May 6, we will be honoring our 2022 top agents in San Antonio. We are planning a fun teambuilding afternoon followed by the annual Agents’ Awards Banquet and Dinner on the River Walk at the Iron Cactus. Plans and big changes for next year’s awards banquet are already underway.

Three new agents join Sales Department team

SAN ANTONIO – Vice President of Sales Teresa Saathoff announced three new agents joined the Hermann Sons Life Sales Team in February.

Shannon E. Caldwell is a resident of Wimberley. She has worked in the health and life insurance industry for 14 years. Her specialization is educating clients on the details of their benefits.

Shannon is married and has four children, who are all Hermann Sons Life members. She spends her free time helping

with marching band and volunteering in her community. Her coverage areas include San Marcos, Wimberley, Dripping Springs and Canyon Lake.

Joseph E. Pugh is a resident of

League City. He has owned a property, casualty and life insurance agency for 30 years. Joseph has been married 36 years and has two children, a daughter and son, and has a granddaugh-

ter. His son works as an agent in his office.

Krystal Wilson is a Hermann Sons Life member and a resident of New Braunfels. She previously was a financial advisor with Northwestern Mutual. Originally from Phoenix, Az., she is the daughter of a military veteran

and mother to an 11-year-old musician (piano and violin). She loves the outdoors and staying active.

“I am so pleased to bring on these new agents,” Teresa said. “Their many years of experience and expertise will surely be a great asset for our sales team.”

100 Percent Family

Hermann Sons Life congratulates the Boeker family. Mark Boeker and his wife Margaret are a 100 Percent Hermann Sons Life Family. They were written by Agent Gary Falkenberg.

Sorbel receives recommender gift card

The Sales Department is recognizing 27 more recommenders for the month of February. This brings the total to 47 members recommending and a total of 60 new members to Hermann Sons Life in 2023. The winner of a $50 gift card for February is John Sorbel of Comfort Lodge.

If you have high school students looking for volunteer and/ or community service hours, or your lodge is looking for something to do for their Hermann Sons Life community, we’d appreciate all the helping hands we can get.

Nicholas Julius Dubcak of Austin.

Answers to puzzles on Pg. 24

March is always a busy month for Camp. From processing enrollments, purchasing activity supplies, hiring, coordinating trainings to parental Zoom meetings, the fun never stops until August! I met with directors Slim, Ding and Nessie on March 11. The meeting was very productive covering everything from Staff Development to the last day of Mini-Camp on Aug. 3.

We are very excited that Webster will be joining us this summer to help create the best possible Fridays in Camping!

Health History Forms

I can already hear parents saying “it’s too early” for Ian to be asking for us to complete the Health History Form. It’s not. Please complete the Health History, Activity Selection and the Dorm Assignment and Check Out forms as early as possible.

Processing over 2,000 forms accurately takes time – which we do not have a lot of in June and July. If changes occur in your child’s health before their Camp session, we can send you another form for updates.

I’d like to finish by thanking everyone in the Home Office,

along with Heath, Clay and Melissa at the Camp Office for all the work they do behind the scenes to help make Camp a huge success. They are all integral in making Camp happen!

Howie is still the picture of grace busting through his doggie door like the Kool-Aid man. Dave and I are expecting to find him wearing the doggie door frame one of these days. He is still growing like a weed. His size can be a bit intimidating because he is huge, especially for an 8-month-old pup, but he still thinks he is lapdog size. He climbs up in my lap for snuggles and doesn’t realize he’s a big boy.

Our home lodge of New Braunfels asked for a visit from Howie, so he made an appearance at our March lodge meeting. You can see him making friends with our president, Vio-

and on our website, hermannsonslife.org – Member Benefits.

Discounted tickets will be available to all other members. Tickets include parking, admission and lunch. A picnic area will be reserved. Tickets sales will open in April.

Stay tuned for more details to come!

Special feature will honor grads

It’s almost time to salute our graduates! Hermann Sons Life will honor members who are graduating high school or college by featuring them on social media and in the newspaper in July.

Entries should include contact phone number, student’s name, high school or university, which lodge they belong to, future plans, parent(s) names, school achievements and activities.

Photos should be of good quality or cannot be pub- lished. Email photos and information to elaines@hermannsonslife.org. The deadline to submit is June 10. Graduates must be Hermann Sons Life members.

Howie’s Happenings

let Tanneberger, in the picture shown.

I cannot thank Arfordable Dog Training and especially our trainer, Sierra, for the great work they did with Howie. Especially given Howie’s size, we realized how important training would be. If you are considering sending your pup to training, we highly recommend it. They have in home training, group training, boarding training and doggie daycare that includes a bit of training, so they have training to fit most every need.

Howie would like you to meet his friends from Heart of Texas SPCA/HOTK9 Rescue, Zoey and April. If you’re interested in meeting April or Zoey, or for

more information, please email: hotk9rescue@yahoo.com to schedule a time to meet them. For more information and to
