Wilred Leisure enter quarters HERALD SPORTS DESK PANJIM, OCT 8

Wilred Leisure Sports Club, Curtorim beat Adarsh Yuvak Sangh, Saligao 3-1 in F&C Cup soccer organised by Verem Boys in memory of Caetano Piedade Colaco at Verem ground on Friday. Curtorim led 2-0 at the break. Sertorio Monteiro gave Curtorim the 2-0 lead in the first half. However, Saligao pulled a goal back in the 49th minute as Mohan Parab turned home a Vinayak Mulgaokar free-kick. Minutes later, Rio Mascarenhas found the mark to seal Curtorim’s win.

Jesus Nazareth triumph

PANJIM (HSD) -- Jesus Nazareth of Siridao defeated Shanu Boys, Bandh, Santa Cruz to emerge victorious at All-Goa 3-a-side football tie-breaker organised by United Club, Santa Cruz. Jesus Nazareth were awarded Rs. 7,777 while Shanu Boys had to be content with Rs. 4,444. Adv. Suresh Palkar was the chief guest and gave the prizes in the presence of guest of honour, Victor Gonsalves, ex-MLA. Prizes were sponsored by Suresh Palkar, ZP member. Ellison Gonsalves proposed the vote of thanks.

Sarzora Sports Club defeated Socio Cultural Club, Loutolim 2-1 to enter the quarter-finals of 2nd Dalton Fernandes memorial inter-village football tournament organised by Sarzora Sports Club at Government ground, Sarzora on Friday. The teams were tied 1-1 at half time.

D Bosco sail into quarters HERALD SPORTS DESK PANJIM, OCT 8

Don Bosco Oratory, Fatorda defeated United Club of Benaulim via the sudden death 6-4 to sail into the quarter-finals of Telaulim Panchayat Cup soccer organised by United Club of Telaulim at Telaulim Panchayat ground on Friday. There was no score at the break. In the first half, after a couple of misses, Benaulim broke the deadlock in the 45th minute through Shamaro Rodrigues’ brilliant strike. Don Bosco regrouped quickly and Wilson Dias found the net in the 55th minute. In the shoot-out, Sanjay, Quilito, Francisco, Valent and Danny scored for Don Bosco while Ashley’s kick was saved by keeper Poly. Benaulim netted through Shamaro, Alfred and Steven while Albino’s and Luis’ kicks were saved by the keeper.

Fatima Convent, St. Thereza win HERALD CORRESPONDENT MARGAO, OCT 8

Fatima Convent High School, Margao and St. Thereza’s High School, Raia won the boys and girls title in the Salcete Taluka U-14 boys and girls title respectively in the inter-school throwball tournament at SAG Sports Complex, Fatorda on Thursday. In the boys section, St Thereza’s defeated King’s School, Sao Jose de Areal 25-21 and 25-12 while St Rita’s HS, Maina clinched the third place beating St Anthony’s HS, Majorda. In the girl’s category, Fatima Convent HS, Margao outclassed St Joseph HS, Aquem 25-7, 25-5. St Thereza’s, Raia got the better of King’s, Sao Jose de Areal 2511, 25-17 to claim the third spot.

Socio Cultural Club started the game on an aggressive note with their forwards repeatedly raiding the Sarzora citadel. Their persistent raids paid dividends in the 12th minute when Floyd Fernandes beautifully headed in off a flag kick taken by Volney Vaz. Unfazed, Sarzora took time to settle down and once they

found the rhythm, they called the shots against the Loutolim citadel. Sarzora were rewarded in the 21st minute, when Franky Oliveira’s snap shot beat the rival keeper off a pass from Cedric Fernandes. Changing ends, Sarzora created many moves that caught the rival defence on the wrong foot. Their match-winner came

in the 12th minute of the second session, when Franky Oliveira struck a second time, off a pass from Jerry Fernandes. Stung by the reverse, Socio Cultural Club tried their best to neutralise the lead but failed to get past the strong rival defence. United Club of Benaulim downed Chandor Club 2-0 to cruise into the quarter-finals.

Mauricio stars for Manora YC HERALD CORRESPONDENT MARGAO, OCT 8

A fine brace by Mauricio D’Souza helped Youth Club of Manora to drub Raitura Sports Club 4-0 in GFA Third Division League at Loutolim ground on Friday. Manora led 2-0 at half time. Raitura seemed to be in trouble and had difficulty handling the pressure as the Manora for-

wards weaved some attacking patterns and kept the rival defence on their toes. Mauricio D’Souza opened the scoring in the 15th minute. Spurred by early success, Manora piled on the pressure on the rival citadel. Mauricio doubled the lead with a stiff grounder in the 32nd minute. Crossing over it was one-way

traffic for Manora as they teased the rival defence with orchestrated raids. Anthony Dias made it 3-0 in favour of Manora. Finally, Norbert Colaco drove the last nail into Raitura’s coffin at the stroke of full time. Arlem Youth Association routed Shiroda Youth Club 6-0 at Loutolim ground on Thursday.

Nitin to lead Goa U-22 HERALD SPORTS DESK PANJIM, OCT 8

Ninad Pawaskar will lead the Goa U-22 cricket team for C.K. Nayudu tournament. Goa will meet Jammu and Kashmir in Jammu from October 11 to 14. Other members of the team Yeshwant Raikar, Vaibhav Naik, Tushar Narvekar, Keenan Vaz, Girish Yadhav, Yogesh Chodankar, Rajshekhar Harrikant, Sumiran Amonkar, Suraj Dongre, Vithallraj Sangodkar, Arun Wagji, Gajanand Azgaonkar, Dennis Fernandes, Utkarsh Pokle. Anil Pokle (manager), Pravin Barde (coach) and Dr Ketan Bhatikar (physio). The team will leave for Jammu on October 9.

Candolim pip Sangolda Lightning HERALD SPORTS REPORTER MAPUSA, OCT 8

A solitary goal by Paul Cardozo in the 15th minute ensured Candolim Sports Club defeated Sangolda Lightning 1-0 in GFA’s Third Division at Tembi ground, Anjuna on Friday. Candolim’s captain Vikesh Palyekar was booked for delaying the restart of play and Bushan Samant of Sangolda was booked for a reckless tackle. Candolim raided the rival’s goal on numerous occasions and were rewarded when Paul Cardozo cheekily back-healed the ball into the goal after receiving a cross from Remedious Fernan-

des. Sangolda who were missing three key players due to college exams, stood their ground in midfield but were passive in front of goal. Sangolda stay on 6 points after three matches while Candolim have joined them on 6 points after only two outings. In another match at Quitula ground, Augustias Sports Club defeated Quitula Sports Club 62. Maxy Menezes scored a first half brace for Quitula, but goals from Nitesh Haldankar (24), Bernard Fernandes (55), Malcolm D’Abreu (67), Sachin Darlekar (70), Sanjay Maykar (86)

and Noah Fernandes( 90+2) secured the three points for Augustias. Panjim Footballers defeated Aivao United Football Club 2-0 at Taleigao ground.
