Al Qaeda still running terror camps in Pak:US PTI WASHINGTON, JULY 8

A fresh chargesheet filed by the US Department of Justice in a terror case shows that AlQaeda is still running terrorist training camps in Pakistan. The Justice Department pointed to this while stating that the plot to bomb New York's subway system, uncovered in September 2009, was directed by senior Al-Qaeda leadership in Pakistan. It also said the leadership plotted to use western operatives to attack targets in Britain.

The eleven-page chargesheet, which was filed in a New York federal court, said that five of the accused had received training from alQaeda in Waziristan in 2008 and early 2009. US prosecutors have accused al-Qaeda leadership of directing the accused to attack the New York subway system last year. The Department of Justice unsealed charges against the five alleged members of alQaeda, including Adnan Shukrijumah whose name is on the FBI's list of most-wanted ter-

rorists, for plotting attacks on the US and UK. The charges reveal that the plot against New York's subway system uncovered in September 2009 involving Colorado resident Najibullah Zazi was directed by senior Al- Qaeda leadership in Pakistan, and was also directly related to a scheme by Al-Qaeda plotters in Pakistan to use Western operatives to attack a target in the United Kingdom. State Department spokesman Mark Toner, however, said the US has received “significant

counter-terrorism co-operation” from Pakistan. The superseding indictment, which was returned and unsealed yesterday in the Eastern District of New York, charges the five defendants each with several terrorism violations. David Kris, Assistant Attorney General for National Security, said these charges underscore the global nature of the terrorist threat. “They further reflect the effectiveness of mutual investigations and cooperation with our global partners in disrupting ter-

Lankan minister begins fast PTI

COLOMBO, JULY 8

A senior Sri Lankan minister today began a hunger strike outside the UN office here, demanding that the world body scrap a panel set up to probe allegations of war crime during the country's civil war. Housing minister Wimal Weerawansa claimed he would “fast-unto-death” to protect the country's military as he said that any international probe could lead to questioning of Sri Lankan armed forces and even some political leaders. His fast comes as the siege of the UN office entered the third day today. But, unlike yesterday the essential staff of the world body reported for work.

flying in spectacular early morning clear skies in northwestwern Switzerland after dawn. Pilot Andre Borschberg was set to land at Payerne at about 8:30 am (local time), after being confined to the cockpit of the single seater experimental aircraft for about 26 hours, team chief Bertrand Piccard

said. Applause and cheers broke out at mission control as the sun rose over Payerne airbase at 5:43 am (local time) with Solar Impulse still in the air. "It's the first time ever that a solar airplane has flown through the night," said Piccard, who himself headed the first round the world

ballon flight in 1999. “That was the moment that proved the mission was successful, we made it,” he told journalists. Flight director Claude Nicollier said that the flight had gone well overnight as Borschberg guided the experimental aircraft towards a landing after dawn.

former minister escorted by a number of policemen defended himself as saying he was innocent when approached by media persons. Nadia died on May 29, a fortnight after she allegedly consumed ‘Ratol’. She was shifted to a Margao hospital after which she was flown in a special chartered ambulance to Jupiter Hospital in Thane and finally to Chennai Apollo where she succumbed. Nadia’s family members offered a baffling explanation, backed by Pacheco that she consumed the poison mistaking it to toothpaste. With the arrest, things will be crystal clear, Deshpande explained, and added that “There are many discrepancies…many things and facts were unclear…the case was also surrounded by a number of rumours which will be cleared now.” Similarly, Pacheco’s close aide Lyndon Monteiro’s presence will also help move case investigation at a faster pace. The 46-year-old legislator emerged before the Margao Court on July 3 after the Supreme Court dismissed his anticipatory bail application. He was remanded to two-day judicial custody but had to be shifted to hospital after he complained of ‘hypertension’. The prosecution on Tuesday however suspected Pacheco may be feigning illness and requested the court to refer him to a fresh medical board. The former minister was today referred to Goa Medical College that conducted his thorough health check, certifying that he does not require further treatment. “Pacheco was referred to

GMC where he was medically examined by senior doctors who stated that he does not suffer from any disease and does not require further treatment. The case was referred back to Hospicio which declared him fit to be discharged,” mentioned the officer. Asked to comment on the veracity of the previous report by Hospicio doctors, Deshpande declined to reply. His statement however hinted that former medical report on Pacheco’s health status was not true. “Initial reports were presented in the Margao court. I am not qualified to say anything on medical aspects…GMC report itself speaks about Hospicio report,” was his only reply. The prosecution, earlier, suspected foul in the first medical report also because Pacheco refused to allow his blood test even though he was under observation for jaundice, hypertension and urinar y tract infection. The Crime Branch had last interrogated Pacheco on June 4 and failed to respond to the summons to appear before the agency the next day, before he moved the courts with anticipatory bail applications. His plea, however, did not find favour with the Sessions Court, High Court and the Apex Court as these courts ruled that the former minister subjects self to custodial interrogations. It was on Saturday last that the former Minister surrendered before the South Goa Sessions Court and immediately applied for bail. The bail plea, however, did not find favour with Additional sessions Judge, P V Kamat, who observed that Mickky’s bail application is nothing but a camouflage to subvert the due process of law. In fact, Judge Kamat had observed that Pacheco’s application seeking bail is nothing but an abuse of the process of law, saying the former Minister was intending to have a second inning seeking regular bail under the guise of surrender provisions. In fact, the Crime Branch had submitted before the Sessions Court earlier this week that Pacheco’s custodial interrogation is necessary to unearth the involvement of more persons connected with Torrado’s death.

the allegations. “It is a routine transfer. We have been doing it almost every month. There is nothing exceptional in the fresh transfers,” he told Herald. Dudu was lately shifted to Vasco Sub-Jail following complaints of his nuisances with other inmates and jail guards. It may be recalled Dudu twice attempted suicide while in Aguada cell when jail authorities wanted to shift him to another cell.

has already given him extension in service for 1 year…” read an extract from the representation copy. The FIR has been registered against Fatima as suspect, who is apparently moving anticipatory bail today. “I suspect that the person,

who has done so, is the one, who has benefited from the representation i.e. Fatima Rodrigues, who has since taken over as the Commissioner of Labour & Employment…However, this is my suspicion and it is for the police to investigate and nab the culprit,” Rodrigues mentioned in his complaint letter to Panjim police. Fatima was elevated to the post of Labour Commissioner on Tuesday.

“They have agreed to hike bus fare by Re one for every nine kilometres. Hence we will be able to fetch Rs 9 as against Rs 8,” he said. Tamankar also informed that department has assured to provide full support in forming a society of owners, drivers and conductors. “The director has assured to provide his officers to us from Monday, who will help in collecting the information required for forming the society,” he stated. Transporters have been alleging that the government is not co-operating with them to form the society.

rorism threats,” he said. Sean Joyce, Executive Assistant Director of the FBI's National Security Branch, said: "The threat posed by terrorists around the world is a threat to security and a threat to the rule of law.” The transnational nature of the conspiracy, and its connection to plots targeted outside the US underscores the importance of international coordination and collaboration to do everything to ensure public safety, the official said. Apart from Shukrijumah, who is also known as “Hamad”, other defendants are Adis Medunjanin alias “Mohammad;” Abid Naseer; Tariq Ur Rehman; and a fifth defendant known as “Ahmad,” “Sohaib” or “Zahid.” Each of the defendants faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted.

Largest hoard of Roman coins found Reuters LONDON, JULY 8

One of the largest hoards of Roman coins ever found in Britain has been unearthed in a field in Somerset by a metal detector enthusiast. The stash of some 52,000 coins dating from the third century AD was discovered buried in a large jar close to the picturesque town of Frome. Dave Crisp from Wiltshire, who found the hoard, said he hit the jackpot after his detector gave “a funny signal”. “I put my hand in, pulled out a bit of clay and there was a little Radial, a little bronze Roman coin. Very, very small, about the

size of my fingernail,” he told BBC radio. Since its discovery in April, experts from the British Museum have examining the find and local archaeologists have been excavating the site. Archaeologists believe the coins were probably intended as some kind of votive offering to the gods.

The coins are estimated to represent the equivalent of four years' pay for a legionary soldier. Because the find is a hoard, it is likely to be declared treasure trove, allowing the local museum to acquire it for the benefit of the nation at market value. The money paid will be shared by the finder and the owner of the land.
