Despite repeated requests by the shopkeepers, fire hydrants installed in the Mapusa Municipal market are yet to be made operational. The fire hydrants have now become invisible as either they are hidden under the beds of hawkers or being used as a support to keep their goods. It may be recalled that on December 20, 2010, 16 shops were gutted in a fire, causing loss of property worth Rs 1 crore. side the market. The roads inside the market are so badly blocked by them that in case the fire breaks out in the market, it would be difficult for fire brigade to wend its way through the hawkers. Hence, the Mapusa Merchants Association had requested MMC to install some fire hydrants to meet any eventuality. The PWD at the request of MMC had decided to install five fire hydrants in the market. Accordingly, PWD floated the tender for the installation of five fire hydrants and it was awarded to a contractor on January 8, 2009, for Rs 11.18 lakh. Though more than one year has lapsed, the work of installation of fire tenders is still hanging in the balance. Speaking to Herald, Shiv Sena Ad-hoc committee member Philip D’Souza stated that neither MMC authorities nor the PWD are bothered about installation of fire hydrants in market. “May be they are waiting for big fire to cause massive loss of public property. The fire hydrant installed in the market are now lying either hidden under the beds of the hawkers or sometimes used to keep their goods” claimed D’Souza. “It is high time that Mapusa shopkeepers take up this issue seriously with the higher authorities before the occurrence of another catastrophe,” said D’Souza.

Drivers’ panel in Sanguem holds meet, demands salary hike Given the hike in transportation rates along various mining routes in the State, the drivers’ community from Sanguem and Uguem areas recently convened a meeting to discuss various issues affecting them and also demanded an increase in the monthly salary. The drivers present for the meeting strongly felt the present salary paid to them to be far less and not sufficient for looking after day-to-day needs of their family. “The rates of all daily need goods have increased, but our salaries have remained the same over the years,” lamented the speakers at the meeting and called for increasing the monthly salary to Rs 10,000. The drivers at the meeting also stressed on the demand to increase daily allowance to Rs 100 as against the present Rs 60 per day paid by the truck operators. During monsoon season, the drivers however had fixed the monthly allowance at Rs 8,000. The drivers had given the truck owners time limit till February 5 to accept their demands failing which they had threatened of handing over the keys of the vehicles to the truck owners on February 6.
