BY DOLCY D’CRUZ HERALD FEATURES pectators braved the rains to enjoy the colours of Bonderam on Saturday, August 28. The ferry transporting loads of people to the island of Divar to experience the harvest festival in all its glory. With the streets filled with people, getting a glimpse of the floats was a big feat, as children ran to the front row to make the most of the festivity. The celebrations started with the Flag March and then the floats representing different wards followed. Five floats were paraded in the evening by the groups, Romantic, Divar Centre, Madant, Premiero and Vitogem. Romantic group which represented Golti, prepared a float on the potters of the village. Small children as well as elderly women were seen dancing with earthen pots and utensils. Vitogem group prepared a float on the occupations of our ancestors, like farming and pottery. Pretty girls danced around wearing the theme colours, blue and white. Navelim was represented by the group Madant Star which showcased the theme ‘Gavana’ which means ‘gavia, vazoia ani nachia’, (sing, play and dance.) Premiero group went with the rhythm of African culture while the Divar Centre decorated its float with Sheru, the Mascot of the Commonwealth games, and even the FIFA World Cup.

Onam celebrated with Great Fervour in Bicholim BY SAMIR UMARYE bout 400 Malayalee families residing in Goa recently celebrated the festival of Onam over a period of two days at Bordem-Bicholim. The festival was organised by the Kalpak Cultural Association - Bicholim for two days on August 28 and 29, 2010 at Mahamaya Temple Hall, Bordem-Bicholim. Keralites residing in Pernem, Bardez, Bicholim and Sattari taluka took part in the festival.
Vishnu took the form of dwarf-sized Vamana and approached Mahabali, asking for three steps of land for which the king agreed readily. Vamana then grew into the skies and with one step covered the earth and with another step the heavens. With no place to keep the third step, Mahabali offered his head, which was pushed by Vamana into the netherworld. But before sending Mahabali to the netherworld, Lord Vishnu gave Bali the boon that he can visit his subjects once in a year. The day Mahabali visits his subjects is celebrated as Onam.

Several cultural programmes were held on the first day while the special attraction for the second day was the 'Panchavadyam' presented by the famous group of artists headed by Purushothaman from Kerala. The 'Onasadya', which is the traditional vegetarian lunch, also served as a special attraction of the day. The organisers had invited a special cook from Kerala to prepare 'Onasadya' which had in all 21 items. From a total of 145 entries, only five short listed colleges made it to the finals. Mudra Institute of Communication, Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, SIES College of Management Studies and IIM Khoziekode presented their business plans on the second day of the conference.
