Celebrating 25 Great Goals on the Konkani Stage
The Tragedy King’s Triumphs By Elvis Sequeira
H
e may have earned the sobriquet ‘Tragedy King’ for his intense portrayal of tragedy, but as an actor, Mario Menezes can get into the skin of any character with ease. As a director he commands the respect of the artistes he works with, and extracts the best of their histrionic potential, with his scripts that are thorough and of a high standard, combined with subtle direction. Mario began his career in tiatrs as a child artist at the age of six. After acting in tiatrs under many directors at the amateur level, Mario was introduced to the professional Konkani stage in 1981 by Late Fr. Freddy J da Costa in his tiatr ‘Doxea’. His very first professional assignment, won him accolades from the audience and offers from well known direrctors to act in their tiatrs. Late Rosario Rodrigues in whose tiatr ‘Fulam Ani Kolle’ he gave an outstanding performance and was then crowned ‘Tragedy King’ ), Roseferns, Prince Jacob, Airestides Dias, Patrick Dourado, Ligorio Fernandes, Pascoal Rodrigues, Jose Rod, Comedian Agostinho, Menino de Bandar, are some of the prominent directors of the Konkani stage that Mario worked with, before forming his own troupe ‘Menezes Theatres’ in 2001. Although his first tiatr under the aegis of ‘Menezes Theatres’ was ‘He Chukik Bhogsonnem Asa?’ , his knack for direction was displayed much before when the tiatr ‘ Goa Bandh’ directed by him won the first prize at the Kala Academy Tiatr Competition in 1992. Over the years, Mario has written, directed and staged 25 tiatrs on various themes, and has travelled across, Dubai, Muscat, Bahrain, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait, Qatar and London, winning several awards both at home and abroad. Till date he has given more than 6000 performances. He has also produced 4 audio albums, and two VCDs, besides displaying his singing and acting talents in more than 75 audio cassettes and 12 video films. Mario, a Commerce graduate, also holds an MBA Diploma. He also studied law for two years. He hails from Chinchinim, Salcete, but is currently based in the port town of Vasco da Gama. Unlike some other prominent directors, Mario Menezes holds a regular day jobS. And, besides his busy schedule, Mario makes sure that he spends quality time with his family – his wife Epiphania and daughters Rioma and Riosha (Rioma, like her father, has made her mark on the Konkani stage with her acting and singing talents.) Although Mario is a prolific tiatrist, many will be surprised to learn that Mario loves football more than tiatrs. A keen footballer during his college days, Mario represented his college at the university level in Mumbai. He also played for Benfica Sports Club Vasco. He is a staunch supporter of Goa’s oldest Vasco Sports Club and Salgaocar Sports Club. And, despite his busy schedule he makes time to watch his favourite teams in action. On the social front, Mario has served on various social and cultural organisations such as: Vice PresidentChinchinim Jaycees; Vice President- CRC Club of Chinchinim; Member –Lions Club of Curchorem; General Secretary – Konkani Tiatristanchi Sounstha; General Secretary – Konkani Non-stop Tiatristanchi Sounstha. Currently he is the Executive Member of the Tiatr Academy of Goa(TAG).
