Quit Delaying, Tips to Start Purchasing Your Dream Home

alk to one of our Local Home Loan Experts

There are several advantages to contacting a lender early. A lender can help you understand the home buying process. Before you begin searching homes on the market in your area, it’s helpful to get a pre-approval for your mortgage financing. You’ll get a real dollar figure that can serve as a solid basis for determining just how much you can afford. To get pre-approved, your lender will pull your credit report in order to determine the amount of your monthly debt payment. This is then compared to your income documentation to get your monthly debt-to-income ratio.

Build Your Credit

Practice good credit habits by making your payments on time, every time. If you have late payments, your credit score will be lower. History and trends matter. Unfortunately, a late payment will always lower your score. However, if you have a history of on-time payments, it may not affect your score as much as it would for someone who is consistently late. On the other hand, it may take longer for someone who is typically late to build up their score with on-time payments.

Work with Your Realtor to Sell Your Home

Work with your Realtor to come up with a marketing plan designed to sell your home fast. Your Realtor can help you price your home, make required disclosers to buyers, respond quickly to buyers’ agents and show your home to buyers. Your Realtor will also negotiate a price, terms and closing date that fit your needs. Be honest about your home’s condition in online photos, so buyers won’t be disappointed when they see your home in person.

Be Realistic

Set a realistic offer within your budget and stick to it. If the price isn’t to your liking or is outside your budget, you must always be willing to walk away. The perfect home is out there, but you have to be patient. Also take note, nothing offends a seller more than a low-ball offer on a house that is priced fairly. Often, negotiations will stop, rarely to be revived again.

Submit the Best Offer on Your Dream Home

how to craft your best offer to increase your chances of the house becoming your home. Pay attention to current market conditions. In areas where the supply of homes for sale significantly lower in comparison to the number of people wanting to buy, this means that selling prices will end up being potentially higher than the list price. Be prepared to adjust your offer accordingly. Request that your buyer’s agent put together a list of comparable properties that have recently sold in the area where you’re looking to buy. This information is valuable when it comes time to put a real number down on paper.

Get Outside and Recharge Your Body, Mind, and Spirit

I was raised in deep East Texas in the middle of the Pineywoods. I

didn’t live in a neighborhood. My backyard was a heavily wooded, thirty-acre playground, in which I spent the majority of my childhood. I was happiest when I was outdoors and that is where I still find my bliss. Living in the fourth largest city in the country is a light year and two hours removed from where I grew up. Finding a place to reconnect with the solitude and beauty of nature can be challenging.

However, the importance of being outside for the sake of stress relief is more important now more than ever. Fortunately, Houston does have some escapes, even for us inner city dwellers, that are perfect to visit during the winter and early spring months before the heat kicks in and the bugs descend. If you’ve not visited Memorial Park in a while, I highly recommend a trip to this inner-city treasure. At 1,500 acres, Memorial Park is Houston’s largest urban center park and is almost double the size of New York’s Central Park. Many changes have taken place over the past few years. The Eastern Glades has reclaimed 100 acres of space that was once inaccessible. This area features a 5.5-acre lake with 2.5 miles of new trails, including boardwalks along the lake and wetlands. The Kinder Land Bridge, which opened in November 2022 is an incredible addition. This area alone is worth a couple of hours of exploration. Houston is fortunate to have such an outdoor gem. For those of you needing a longer break, I recommend visiting your local bookstore or outdoor retailer and picking up “60 Hikes within 60 Miles” by Laurie Roddy. This fun guide includes trails throughout Houston and the surrounding area and is perfect for a weekend of outdoor fun. Unplugging and connecting with the outdoors is a great way to calm the mind and escape the annoyances of city life. It’s good for our mental health, and of course, great for our physical wellbeing. We at Shana Ross Fitness urge you to get outside and see our city from a different vantage point. It’s pretty wonderful in the great outdoors.

Positive Dental Experience for Kids

The dental office is a scary place for so many people. Part of our mission at Heights Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics is to ensure that our sweet patients never fear going to the dentist. However, your child’s perception of the dentist is controlled largely by parents before we even have a chance to work our magic. We count on parents to be our partners instead of introducing preconceived fears. During our appointments we explain everything we do prior to initiating any treatment. We use words that accurately explain every step without instilling fear. We work hard with our little patients to prepare them for everything we will do, but if you want to do some preparations at home, here are some guidelines. First and foremost, we think that the language we use to prepare the children for their appointment is crucial to their experience. Please avoid words such as shot, hurt, drill, or pull. Instead, we use the terms painting sleepy juice, tooth feeling different or having a pillow for a tooth nap, tooth whistle or tiny toothbrush, and wiggle out the tooth.

Try some sushi, tempura and various Japanese noodle dishes for a light, yet comforting meal. Wash it down with a cold Japanese beer or warm sake.

If your child is coming in for a cleaning, please tell them that we are going to take some pictures of his or her teeth, and then we will brush and count the teeth. If a filling or similar procedure needs to be done, please tell your child that we need to wash out the sugar bugs with a tiny toothbrush that sprinkles water. We will have them wear the “funny nose” to make them feel happy. We need to let the tooth take a nap by painting sleepy juice around it. It will feel like a pillow for the tooth and will go away after they get home. Finally, we will put a white star in the tooth and shine it up. In case of an extraction, please tell your child that sleepy juice will be painted around that tooth; we will then wiggle the tooth out and place a band aid over it.

4464 Montrose Blvd. 713-523-3939

After dental treatment is done, try to be positive and reinforce how great your child did. Instead of asking “Did it hurt?” or “Was it bad?” please tell them “You did great! I’m so proud of you for being brave!” This will make them feel successful and confident. Please keep in mind that following dental treatment the mouth may be a little red from the pressure of the raincoat on the soft tissue. The “funny nose”, or laughing gas, might make a temporary mark on the skin. Additionally, because of the numbness from the local anesthesia the cheek or lip may appear swollen or sagging. All these changes will subside within 1-2 hours.

Dr. Kasia Lindhorst, Dr. Drew Darsey, Dr. Adrien Theriot

Thank you for helping your children develop a positive attitude toward dentistry! We promise that it will pay off in the future and they will never “hate” the dentist. Should you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call our office anytime.

“Cozying Up for Fall: Decorating Your Home for the Season of Gatherings” As the leaves begin to turn vibrant shades of red,

orange, and yellow, and the air carries a crisp hint of autumn, it’s time to embrace the season of fall and start preparing your home for the upcoming holidays, family gatherings, and guests. Let’s explore some creative and inspiring ways to decorate your home for the fall season, setting the perfect stage for memorable moments with your loved ones.

Welcome at the Doorstep

Let’s start by welcoming the season right at your doorstep. A festive fall wreath on your front door can set the tone for what’s inside. Consider using elements like dried leaves, pinecones, or even faux pumpkins to create a charming, rustic look that says, “Welcome to fall!”

Embrace the Colors of Fall

One of the simplest ways to decorate your home for the season is by embracing the warm, earthy colors of fall. Incorporate deep oranges, rustic reds, golden yellows, and rich browns in your decor. You can achieve this through decorative pillows, throws, curtains, and even repainting a wall or two.

Cozy Up with Textiles

Autumn is synonymous with coziness, and the right textiles can make all the difference. Swap out lightweight summer linens for heavier, warmer fabrics like flannel, wool, and faux fur. Layering your furniture with throws and pillows in fall colors can instantly create an inviting atmosphere.

Bring Nature Indoors

Fall is a season that celebrates nature’s beauty, so don’t hesitate to bring some outdoor elements

indoors. Collect pinecones, acorns, and colorful leaves to use as table centerpieces or in glass vases. A vase filled with sunflowers, dahlias, or even dried wheat stalks can also add a touch of autumn charm to any room.

Light Up with Candles

The soft, warm glow of candles is perfect for creating an intimate, fall ambiance. Invest in scented candles that evoke the scents of the season, like pumpkin spice, cinnamon, or apple pie. Place them on mantels, coffee tables, and dining tables for that extra cozy factor.

Decorate with Gourds and Pumpkins

Of course, no fall decor is complete without gourds and pumpkins. Use different shapes, sizes, and colors of pumpkins to adorn your home.

Seasonal Table Settings

Set a beautiful fall-themed table for your family gatherings. Use rustic tableware, placemats with fall motifs, and seasonal centerpieces. Don’t forget to incorporate nature into your table settings with small arrangements of flowers or foliage.

Outdoor Entertaining

Fall doesn’t just happen indoors. Set up your outdoor spaces for gatherings with blankets, pillows, and comfy seating arrangements. Fall fires, s’mores, and hot apple cider can make your outdoor space as inviting as the indoors.

Personal Touch

Add your personal touch to your fall decorations by involving your family in the process. Create handmade decorations or crafts with your kids to celebrate the season together. This will not only add a personal touch but also create cherished memories. As the days get shorter and the air gets crisper, decorating your home for the fall season can be an enjoyable and creative process. By embracing the colors, textures, and elements of autumn, you can create a warm, inviting space for your family and guests. So, channel your inner decorator, let your creativity flow, and get ready to celebrate the season of gatherings in style!

A T ale of T wo Br i d g es As your neighborhood Realtor, a Heights

resident, an avid runner and bicyclist I would like to share my thoughts on the Heights Hike and Bike Trail. A bit over a decade ago, the City of Houston transformed an abandoned railroad track into a now heavily used running and biking trail. Formerly the Missouri-Kansas-Texas (MKT) railroad and now known as the MKT Trail, it might surprise you how easily you can traverse 20 miles to downtown or even Memorial Park. Whenever I take out of town visitors, and even Houstonians on the trail they are shocked by the sheer number of pedestrians, bicyclists, walkers and even roller bladers utilizing the trail. They can’t believe this is in Houston, and it is one of the many reasons The Heights has

become a sought-after neighborhood that is both urban and livable. However, there is a connectivity problem in a few spots - especially trying to navigate near I-10. Hence the need for the two new pedestrian bridges to link the 1.3-mile gap in the trail behind MKT to the other side of the bayou. The success of the bridges at Buffalo Bayou Park has exceeded anyone’s imagination and we can achieve the same results here, perhaps even better due to the sheer number of residents (approximately 40,000) in mid-rises, homes and townhomes in the vicinity of the MKT trail. As our beloved city continues to densify, the need is ever greater to provide accessibility

to these vital green spaces that are both beautiful, enticing, a respite from our heavily trafficked roadways and provide safe passages for other modes of transportation. With the right support, the Heights Hike and Bike Trail could truly flourish, becoming an even more integral part of our community and a source of pride for Houston. I encourage you to visit www.atotb.org and also follow them on Instagram @ataleoftwobridges. Happy trails and be sure to say hello if you see me out there.

Why Choose a “Board Certified” Attorney? trial law. Board certified lawyers earn the right to publicly represent themselves as a specialist in their select area of law. They are the only attorneys allowed to do so by the State Bar of Texas. This designation sets them apart as being an attorney with the highest public commitment to excellence in their area of law.

Lawyers often cite various accomplishments, awards and even “expertise” on their websites and advertisements. However, the Texas Board of Legal Specialization was established by the Supreme Court of Texas as the only governing board authorized to certify attorneys in legal specialty areas.

Detecting Melanoma Early - We Are Proud To Announce We Are The First In Houston To Incorporate This Technology. Nevisense is the only FDA-approved device to evaluate atypical moles that are not obvious benign spots or melanomas, guiding more precise biopsy decisions during skin cancer checks. Nevisense is clinically proven to improve diagnosis of early melanoma in atypical moles that are not clearly malignant or benign.

Heights Dermatology is proud to announce

that they are the first dermatology group in Houston, and second in the state, to incorporate the most advanced technology to help the group’s providers detect melanoma earlier, when it is almost 100% curable.

As an innovative practice, Heights Dermatology has a history of providing its patients with state-of-the-art equipment designed to deliver the very best results. Patients value the role of Nevisense to help catch early melanomas in real time during the practice visit. Since they can be stressful, patients trust their providers to be as thorough as possible during skin checks, especially for those who have a history of melanoma and biopsies, or who are at risk for melanoma. Many patients are afraid of, or are uncomfortable with, the prospect of biopsy, especially if the mole is in an area that is cosmetically sensitive, e.g., chest or face. Heights Dermatology is proud to offer its patients the very best in dermatologic care.

Hooray!! This Winter Marks Curb Appeal Blues’ 6th Birthday

Happy Birthday to us! And Happy Thanksgiving and Merry

Christmas to the rest of you! We’re wrapping up some great projects this year – The Shepherd restoration project is underway with fresh mosaics all throughout Shepherd between Westheimer and 59, you know, where the terrible construction has been underway for the last couple years… We’re part of that too, but don’t blame the tile guys. We wrapped up some Pillar work with the Norhill Association, having prepped and coated the existing pillars, and recolored the street names and blocks. If you’ve been through Norhill lately, I’m sure you’ve seen them.

Let’s see what 2024 brings us! Between the 1920’s and the 1950’s, Houston used blue and white, unglazed mosaic tiles inlaid in curbs to indicate addresses and street names. As Houston grows and continues to rebuild, these pieces of history are quickly disappearing. Curb Appeal Blues is working with the Blue Tile Project to bring back the Blue Tile as a symbol of Houston’s support of Historic Preservation, local business, and the arts. These are a great permanent replacement for the painted address numbers on your curb!

echocardiograms, arterial/venous Dopplers, and lab-work. We are able to produce x-rays immediately during your office visit; including chest x-rays, abdominal x-rays and x-rays of all extremities and bones. X-rays allow us to more adequately diagnose what ails you in order to provide you with more specific treatment. We are specialized in heart disease and are equipped to perform echocardiograms in order to assess heart and valvular function. If you have a heart condition or suffer from congestive heart failure, it is essential that an echocardiogram be performed to establish your baseline heart function. Dizziness can be caused by a multitude of factors, however, a common and significant cause includes blockage of the carotid arteries, which are the arteries supplying the brain. If you have had a stroke or symptoms similar to a stroke, including dizziness, weakness in an arm, leg or both, difficulty talking, a carotid Doppler should be performed in order to determine whether these arteries are the source of the symptoms. Diagnosing carotid artery

disease allows us to better treat circulatory disease, which can also be found in other parts of the body.

What Does Your Will Have To Do With Clean Closets Or Travel?

When I learned the focus of the 2023 Winter

Heights Pages was “What Have You Been Putting Off,” I thought, Wow, I am going to need a couple of pages in tiny print to list the items from off my bucket list. From places to travel, people to visit, food to eat, and languages to learn to, and of course, to clean those closets! Oh, forget about those closets!

Since my life’s work and passion is to ensure as many people as possible have their affairs in order, you already know getting your Estate Planning in place is my ongoing message, which should include, at a minimum, a Will, Statutory Power of Attorney (for finances), Power of Attorney for Health Care, and Disposition of Remains.

An estate plan includes not only to whom and how your assets are transferred, but also how your affairs are to be handled and by whom if you become incapable during your lifetime of doing so yourself. Once you focus, you can decide whether your life should be extended by extraordinary means, whether you desire to be an organ donor or other in-depth details. Many of these documents are like insurance. You don’t need them until you need them, and then it is too late to obtain them because you are either mentally incompetent or deceased. Do not let this happen to you and your family. A proper estate plan assures you that your needs will be met during your lifetime and that your property will be distributed properly at your death. It also fulfills your responsibility to your family and friends to make it as easy as possible for them to care for you during your lifetime and at your death.

Visit with your attorney to determine your specific needs and get your Estate Planning Documents in place, then stop putting off those travel plans and lower those clean closets to the bottom of the priority list.

Few people will know what your closets look like and even fewer will remember!

Trends to Consider When Remodeling the Heart of Your Home The holiday

season brings us together each year and there’s no better location for our gatherings than the heart of our home – the kitchen. Beyond being a culinary workspace, the kitchen holds a special place in our homes. It is the backdrop for countless gatherings where we share laughter and create memories over a hearty home-cooked meal. Recognizing the kitchen’s pivotal role in our home, it’s imperative not to underestimate its significance in its appearance and functionality. Whether you’re contemplating a small makeover in preparation for upcoming holiday feasts or considering a full kitchen renovation for resale value, it’s essential to ensure that your kitchen is both functional and captivating. Our in-house designer at Boulevard Realty, Katelyn Moore, has identified five remodeling trends that you can explore when planning out your kitchen remodel.

homeowners. A wide range of options are available, including some that mimic the elegant appearance of marble. Your countertops are exposed to scratches, burns, and stains so opt for high-quality materials that also look fabulous. 2 Replacing Backsplash & Wallpaper Fascinating backsplash designs and wallpaper offer excellent means to infuse your personality into your space. Consider the color, texture, and pattern and how they will create a unique and distinctive ambiance that sets it apart from others. 3 Colorful Kitchen Islands Add a pop of color! Introducing a vibrant kitchen island can be an inexpensive way to make it stand out and create a striking contrast with white cabinets. 4 Mix-and-Match Metals Embrace the art of combining different elements! Pairing various metal finishes in a kitchen is an excellent method for achieving an aesthetically captivating look. Skillful coordination is essential when you’re mixing and matching.

Panel-ready appliances can blend into the cabinetry and countertops to help create a seamless and sleek kitchen design. Storage can help maintain a clean kitchen, reduce any clutter, and increase functionality. This is particularly valuable in smaller kitchens where space is limited. A remodel can be a daunting task. Have you ever wondered about the best way to clean your window treatments? With Spring cleaning around the corner use these expert tips...

Cellular Shades

Shutters

Soil Removal ● Sponge with a mild detergent and warm water solution and blot dry. (Extra care should be used when cleaning blackout fabrics, as the fabrics could become permanently creased.) ● Do not use strong detergents or spot removers. Dry cleaning is not recommended.

When dusting, vacuuming, and spot cleaning aren’t enough and deeper cleaning is desired, ultrasonic or injection/extraction cleaning with professional blind cleaner are an option. Professional blind cleaners use a variety of methods to clean blinds and vary in their capabilities.

Regular Cleaning ● Dusting and vacuuming are recommended for monthly maintenance. ● Spot clean with mild soap. ● Dust with a feather duster. ● Lightly vacuum fabric with an upholstery attachment.

● Occasional light vacuuming with a brush attachment should keep shutters clean. ● More severe soiling can be removed by using a soft cloth and a mild detergent and water solution. ● Clean with a cotton cloth. Wipe area with clear water to remove any detergent residue and dry with cotton cloth.

Engineered & Wood Blinds

Regular Cleaning ● Lightly vacuum with an upholstery attachment. ● Sponge with a mild detergent and warm water solution and blot dry.

Contact Shari Perez with Budget Blinds Greater Heights to discuss ways to improve your homes energy efficiency while also providing a beautiful design aesthetic.

Roller Shades

● Dust with a feather duster. ● Lightly vacuum fabric with an upholstery attachment. ● Wipe with a damp cloth if needed ● DO NOT completely immerse.

First & Second Saturday Art Markets First Saturday Arts Market has featured doz-

ens of visual artists each month showcasing their work in the Historic Houston Heights since March 2004. The market was at the forefront of outdoor “popups” trending nationwide at the time with one key difference, a focus on visual arts. The market takes place at 540 W. 19th St., 11 a.m. – 6 p.m., September - May. Visitors to this free outdoor event will find friendly artists with paintings, sculpture, photography, jewelry and many more popular art mediums.

There is always a popular food truck on site and local singer/songwriters can often be found providing entertainment at the market. Going on 20 years, the market has provided artists a chance to present their creations to the public in a casual relaxed atmosphere for both patrons and artists. The Market at Sawyer Yards takes place on 2nd Saturdays at 1502 Sawyer St. in conjunction with Sawyer Yards Open Studios in the First Ward area of Arts District Houston. This market is open September - May, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. The market follows the same footprint as First Saturday Arts Market with more of a focus on artisan crafts, folk art, home decor, beauty and wellness products, cottage and packaged specialty foods. Surrounded by the highest concentration of working artists in all of Texas, the market coincides with 2nd Saturday Open Studios, when artists from The Silos at Sawyer Yards, Winter, Spring, Summer and Silver Street Studios, open their studios to the public. For details about both markets visit FirstSaturdayArtsMarket.com

See you at the markets!

Artists explore expression, change & excitement. For most of us, the new year feels right for

getting one’s affairs in order. For cyclical trends in an artist’s life, this time of year slows down, and reflection is almost natural. These working artists reflect on the past and why this new year is the perfect time to regroup, reflect, and move forward.

Toria Hill www.toriahill.art Winter Street Studios, #A165 Days before Christmas 2022, damage done by an arsonist to Winter Street Studios turned the lives of artists with studios there upside down. After a year of cleanup and restoration,

most of the building has reopened to the studio tenants. Toria Hill is one of those artists and reflects on her year since the fire and how she found renewed inspiration in travels. “It has been a tough year, but now the building is a hub of energy. Walking through the bright white, freshly painted halls, it really feels like a brand-new start.”

Lorena Fernandez paints, surrounded by her art.

“In times of adversity, you really discover what you are made of,” Hill said. “My daddy used to say, ‘life is a dance - it’s two steps forward and one step back. I decided that the fire was a good time for me to take a step back, and I am so glad I did. Now that I am of a certain age - I understand that it is in those steps back where the real change happens.” After the fire, Hill decided to do nothing. She packed her art supplies and traveled to Europe. Hill visited museums, studying architecture and street art until she stumbled upon the Straat Museum, dedicated to street art and graffiti in Amsterdam.

From Toria Hill’s New Amsterdam series,

She Took the Risk

“Walking through the museum, it was as if a part of my brain that had been sleeping my entire life suddenly came alive, and I began painting in my brain a new way to create lines, bolder, brighter colors, and expressions! The idea that street art and fine art could mix excited me, and I couldn’t wait to get back and start painting again.”

“As an Expressive Arts Therapist and Educator, I’m all about how art can be a healing force,” Fernandez said. “Now that my kids are all grown up, I’m focusing on being an artist and healer right here in Houston, where I have deep roots and artsy friendships.” “Being part of Latin American Women Artists of Houston (www.lawah.net) brings me a lot of joy, and we’re teaming up for some cool community engagement,” Fernandez said. “I’m planning workshops that go beyond just painting—we’re talking theater, music, visual arts, collage, and poetry, what we call a multimodal expressive arts. It’s a judgmentfree zone where you can let loose and reconnect with your inner creative child.” As a board member of the International Expressive Arts Therapy Association (IEATA), Fernandez says they are bringing the scoop on the healing power of art to Houston. IEATA is dedicated to bringing the arts into the world for growth, healing, communication, and collaborative learning.

In perhaps an ironic twist, painter Lorena Fernandez found renewed inspiration upon her return to Houston after living in Amsterdam for four and a half years. For Fernandez, renewal and growth have been infused with her expression as an artist and career. She will be a new tenant at Winter Street Studios.

Expressive painting by Lorena Fernandez

“Being part of something that makes a positive impact in our community through art is simply awesome,” Fernandez said.

“By exploring this process in my artwork, I believe it symbolizes the act of finding harmony amidst complexity in our lives,” Summers said. “It reflects the idea that getting our affairs in order involves embracing the unknown, taking risks, and trusting our instincts. It is a representation of how planning and spontaneity can coexist, resulting in a remarkable balance that leads to personal growth and creativity.”

Johnny Van Slyke Summers vanslykeart.com Johnny Van Slyke Summers’ painting of musician Carlos Santana graced the cover of the Heights Pages Summer 2021 issue. Summers said that his concept of creating a new painting of musician Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin fame showcases his artistic journey and the balance he’s discovered between planning and spontaneity. “As an artist, I wanted to capture the essence of Jimmy Page while infusing the piece with an abstract touch,” Summers said. “The careful planning and attention to detail allowed me to create a recognizable portrayal of him, with every intricate detail of his guitar meticulously painted.” “However, I also introduced an element of risk

Johnny Van Slyke Summers with his painting of Jimmy Page and excitement by incorporating the abstract portion of the painting,” Summers said. “This process involved allowing the paint to flow freely onto the canvas, guided by intuition and what felt right in the moment. This deliberate blend of organized precision and spontaneous expression created a dynamic and captivating composition.”

MICROBLADING & WHY YOU SHOULD DO IT It’s believed that next to teeth, the eyebrows are the most important features on

any face. Eyebrow trends come and go, from thin and sharp to bold and bushy à la Cara Delevingne and basically every other model who’s been hot in the past few years. But the latest trend we can’t get enough of is microblading, a new tattoo technique that fills brows out or reshapes them by drawing on tiny lines that look like individual hairs. We know what you’re thinking: tattooed eyebrows? No way. But hear us out. Microblading leaves brows looking natural and takes years off of your face! It sounds terrifying, and there’s this stigma of grandma’s blue arch eyebrows, but these are completely different.

Finally, get beautiful, fuller brows that will last up to three years. Expert & natural looking technique that lasts much longer than others!

Imagine going to Bikram yoga, swimming or simply just waking up in the morning with fabulous brows! Now it’s possible with microblading at La Paz Day Spa.

Our Computer-Aided Design program assures that your project will be both functional and beautiful. Your direct participation in the design is encouraged. You need not settle for a substandard package! We give you exactly what you want and need. No two buildings are ever exactly the same, they are a reflection of their owners’ personality. Our company started back in 1952 under the name Reid Construction Company. We specialized in garages and all exterior home improvements. This led to building garage apartments and barns. We are rated A+ with the B.B.B. and have a showcase in Houston Heights. We also specialize in permitting in The Historic Heights area. We take all our jobs from the ground up and custom build everything.

Microblading is done with a handheld tool made out of needles that puts pigment into the skin, but doesn’t go as deep as a normal tattoo would. It’s also semi-permanent. Your micro bladedd microbladed brows should last between two and three years.

Revolutionizing Wellness: Unveiling Insights into Hormone Replacement Therapy at 4Ever Young Heights

A few years ago my wife and I reached a turning

point. It is sometimes through personal tragedy that you learn what it most important to you and to prioritize your passions in life. Thus began our journey to open 4Ever Young Anti Aging Solutions in The Heights. Since we have lived in the Heights area for over 7 years, it is only fitting that we open our clinic here. Hormone Replacement Therapy 4Ever Young Heights specializes in fighting the effects of aging on the body. One of the biggest problems we all face as we age is a decline in hormone production. This can manifest in many different ways. Brain fog, weight gain/ loss, fatigue, muscle weakness, muscle aches/ tenderness, pain, stiffness, joint swelling, sweating, increased hunger/thirst, depression, nervousness, anxiety, irritability, thinning hair, and dry skin. The list is long and most people just attribute these things to getting older. That’s the point. We don’t have

After Hydrafacial, SkinPen, Botox, and RHA-dermal filler treatments to dramatically reduce lines, wrinkles, and restore lost volume using non-invasive Facial Rebalancing techniques.

to go through many of symptoms until we are ready to deal with the changes in our bodies. What are the Hormones that an Anti Aging Clinic Treats? Testosterone, Estrogen, Progesterone and Growth Hormone are our most commonly treated hormones. Testosterone is not for just men, but women as well. Think energy, stamina, muscles, and many other things. Testosterone levels begin to decline in your 30s. For most men, Testosterone levels can decline to half their original levels by the time they are 50. Estrogen for women and men. Estrogen changes in women is sometimes a sign of menopause, diminishing skin elasticity, and bone loss. Too much Estrogen in men can manifest in a change in mood or enlarged breasts. Progesterone plays a crucial role in maintaining a woman’s cycle. During menopause both Estrogen and Progesterone decline which can cause hot flashes and night sweats. For some patients Progesterone supplementation can relieve these symptoms as well as aid with sleep and cognitive

function. Growth Hormone is a protein that is made by the pituitary gland and secreted into the bloodstream. By the time most of us reach age 30, our GH production has been reduced dramatically. It is a powerful hormone that stimulates bone growth, muscle mass, increases energy, and increases exercise capacity. What are the benefits of Hormone Replacement Therapy? Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) replaces hormones no longer naturally produced by your body in order to improve your health and overall well-being, and reduce symptoms associated with hormone imbalance. Simply put if you don’t feel yourself anymore, we want to help you feel like you again. Additional benefits can include reduced risk of osteoporosis, improved mood and overall sense of mental well-being, reduced risk of colon cancer, reduced risk of diabetes, reduced risk of cataracts, and improvement in joint pains. If you want to learn more or are interested in seeing if HRT is right for you, schedule a complimentary consultation with our Clinic Director. We have years of knowledge and want to help.

The New Fountain of Youth by Gerald Melancon As the new year approaches, many of us

begin to contemplate how we are going to make our upcoming year better than the last. Whether you call it a New Year’s resolution or just a mid-course adjustment, there’s always the temptation to wonder how life might be improved if you adopted a new set of behaviors or pursued another course in your employment, business or love. However, in doing so, you would need to put your best self forward physically and be mentally committed with the clarity of purpose, to accomplish your stated goals. It is in my humble opinion that any of those goals get exponentially tougher to achieve if your health is compromised. Today, people are living longer by all measurable standards, but living to a ripe old

age doesn’t necessarily mean healthy or happy longevity if it is burdened by disability or disease. The population of people over age 65 has grown more quickly than other age group due to longer life spans and declining birth rates, yet people are living more years in poor health. They are not only living longer, but more importantly, many are “dying longer”. You must plan for a long lifespan as well as a long health-span. Many spend the last stages of life being sick, unable to live life to the fullest; incumbered by loss of physical independence as well as the cognitive declines faced by many. I have watched both. My mother-in-law was essentially bedridden for the last years of her life and my own mother now deals with dementia. 92% of people over age 65 have at least one chronic disease. Having grown up with my Japanese grandparents and their associates, early in life I was very aware, maybe perversely so, about growing old and even dying. This morbid interest of mine has always been with me. Along the way, I have tried to incorporate some of the better practices that might

increase my own longevity as well as preserve my cognitive abilities. Needless to say, those practices have evolved dramatically over time. In the last couple of decades, the science of nutrition has improved greatly and we have found that many of our beloved foods and traditions are not our friends. Sugary drinks and treats, fried foods (think French fries) highly processed foods and alcohol all work against your physical and long term cognitive health. Highly processed foods exceed 70% of the calories of an American diet. This is particularly true with younger populations, children in the formative years of development, who consume such diets. A correlation has been found between this type of diet to ADHD symptoms. The emergence of “superfoods” including beans, berries, broccoli, and certain types of fish give us clear and easy alternatives to the pitfalls of an unhealthy diet. Many Americans have become obese people in a malnourished world. Processed foods are notoriously unfulfilling. Potato chips, most breakfast cereals, frozen meals and sugary drinks are often high in calories and light in general nutrients, including fiber or protein which would leave you more satiated. Eating processed foods cause many to overeat, as they do not get that “full” feeling. Nutritionists have been saying for some time that our problem may not be excess fat on the body, but more like a lack of musculature. Sarcopenia is the loss of muscle and strength that can happen when someone gets older and does less physical activity. Some nutritionists also say that obesity at its core is a disease of the muscle. 73% of our seniors are overweight and under muscled. Lessened activity, many times combined with decreased calorie intake can also weaken bones, compromise balance and make a person more susceptible to injury. Muscle wasting also coincides with COPD, chronic heart failure, renal failure, spinal cord injury, bed rest and cancer. The combination of any of these conditions usually leads to loss of independence, therefore, having more healthy muscle mass increases your rate of survivability against disease and sickness and

42 Heights Pages Winter 2023

lessens the probability that these conditions will befall you. Muscle is something you must always be working on. Researchers did a study where they took healthy 20-something year old males and reduced the amount of physical activity they performed. They had them take elevators and escalators and pushed them around in wheelchairs. Within 14 days, the men had lost about 5% of their muscle mass. An elderly person who is bedridden can lose 10% of his muscle mass within 10 days. Resistance

exercises to build more muscle offers you the closest thing to the fountain of youth. It has been shown to improve blood pressure, blood glucose and metabolic markers.

The average person should have about 0.8 grams of protein for every kilogram (2.2 lbs) of body weight. If you are a 150 lb (68 kilograms) person for example, according to the above, you require 54 grams (or about 8 ounces) of lean protein. However, if you are engaging in resistance exercise, dependent on your intensity, this requirement may increase, with experts running that number up to 1.2 to 1.6 grams per kilo of body weight. For that same 150 lb person, the required amount of protein goes up to 12 to 15.5 ounces of protein. High protein diets do not adversely affect normal, healthy people; however, if you do have kidney or liver disease, you should always check with your doctor. Good and easy sources of protein are 7 grams

with a 50% improvement in strength. Muscle wasting can be reversed. The best example I have is my wife, Dualise. Even at the tender age of 70, and having been rather sedentary, she began going to the gym seriously for the first time in her life in February 2022. Week by week, I watched as she attempted to increase the intensity of the workouts, improve her diet and soon, the pounds began to fall off. By late summer, she was about 25 pounds lighter and pushing 40-50% more weight than when she started.

per ounce for lean protein, 25 grams for a cup of small curd cottage cheese, 6 grams per egg, about 15 grams in a container of yogurt or cup of beans. Paying attention to what you eat, including a wide array of veggies, plenty of leafy greens and cruciferous veggies are easy places to start, and paying attention to how much protein you consume each day.

Strength Training and What It Can Do

Burns extra calories for up to 72 hours after your workout—what’s known as afterburn. This is especially true with high-intensity strength training.

Changes your body composition, which helps shape your body and keep you healthy. Improves coordination and balance and may help prevent injuries. Prevents the loss of lean body mass that happens from weight loss and or aging. Weight gain often happens as your metabolism slows over time. Strengthens bones and connective tissue along with muscles. It’s never too late to start Strength Training. In one study, an 85 year old male who was having difficulty walking was put on a 12 week strength and protein program. In those 12 weeks, his muscle mass increased by 44%,

Personally, until 8-9 years ago, I used to experience back spasms a couple of times a year that would put me down for 2-3 days each time. About that time, I had a nice little chat with Shana Ross of Shana Ross Fitness who had just underwent back surgery, stating that therapy (strengthening) was no longer working for her. During our conversation though she did share some information on what exercises I might try. To date, I have not suffered another spasm. Although I had always worked out, a specific set of core exercises (back, abs, obliques) improved my life greatly.

Stay Curious

Between 1991 and 1993, 678 nuns were studied for the effects of aging and mental decline. Many of them (upon autopsy after death) were found to have the usual amounts (for their age) of amyloids in their brains, however, the effects of dementia were much more rare. One reason cited for how well they did was, as a group, they had a high level of education. Nuns are a very studious group, many pursuing studies in astronomy, the sciences and math. This constant “learning”, this need to store knowledge, created additional connections in the brain that were able to compensate for the damage that would otherwise have been done. Staying curious helps provide some protection against long-time mental decline. It will also provide a conduit to additional knowledge which may again benefit your health, be it improvements in nutritional data, therapies or lifestyle modifications. New data is being presented all the time. I have participated in sports long enough to know that some of us go to the gym, others run, swim or bike but, in the long run, making resistance training a key part of your workout routine will most likely give your body the best return. We all want to feel good about ourselves and our lives. Being physically fit removes some of our fears and self-doubt and helps project the kind of confidence that goes hand-in-hand with being successful in other areas of our life.

Anthony Harnden - Contemporary Craftsmen I spent my early years in Tulsa and moved to

were rapidly rising.

In my 20s I started a career in the medical field where I managed around 60 labs coordinating staff. My work gave me a sense of accomplishment, but I found myself seeking a creative outlet.

Thinking back to when I was a teenager, I would spend my time in various architectural antique venues. I had a great appreciation for architectural artifacts, so my natural instinct was to shift into period restorations. I bought my first house for $98,000 with a budget of $110,000. When it sold in 2008 for $350,000, I quit real estate and began building spec homes full time.

Houston at the age of 14. It’s been 40 years and I proudly call Houston home.

In my early 30s I made the transition into full time residential real estate in the Greater Heights area. Selling houses gave me the freedom and flexibility to get involved in my community and build relationships with fellow local artists. During this time I became President of the Brooke Smith Heights Art Coalition and formed a band of artists to coordinate the “Day Of The Dead” in the Heights. The Crisis of 2008 provided opportunity out of necessity. Needing to provide income, Contemporary Craftsmen was born. We decided to salvage houses slated for demo, moving them to properties we owned to generate revenue through rentals. By the time our first house was complete, the market had shifted and home prices

Since then we have moved and renovated numerous homes, raised homes to build underneath them, converted an old grocery store into luxury lofts, and completed multiple period restorations. Today we’ve grown into a design and build firm making peoples’ creative dreams come true from concept to completion.
