BUILT TO YOUR SPECIFICATIONS

Kiruna Wagon designs and manufactures freight wagons that transport a wide variety of commodities. Our experienced team works closely with you to create customised solutions for all your needs.

We build and redesign your wagons with the aim of achieving the highest level of efficiency, serviceability and availability. With roots in ore transport north of the Arctic Circle, Kiruna Wagon has solid experience in wagon manufacturing for a demanding Nordic climate. Whether your need is in heavy bulk transport, other goods transport or work wagons, we can provide tailored solutions in small or large series.

TAILORED WAGON SOLUTIONS FOR A NORDIC CLIMATE

With roots in ore transport north of the Arctic Circle, we have solid experience in wagon manufacturing for a demanding Nordic climate. Whether your need is in heavy bulk transport, other goods transport or work wagons, we can provide tailored solutions in small or large series.

Since the start in 2004, our goal is to be one step ahead and take the development forward. With a customeroriented focus, we offer custom-built wagons that meet all the requirements in the approval process for transport

on public railway as per the Swedish or international standards.

Maximising the possibility for well-functioning conditionbased maintenance (CBM) is a part of our core philosophy. We build wagons with the idea that maintenance should, as often as possible, be carried out at natural terminal stops without having to disconnect the wagon from the train. With this strategy, we maximise the revision interval and reduce your maintenance costs in the long run.

Thanks to our extensive experience in wagons in commuter traffic, we have developed special expertise within modern and simplified solutions that efficiently enhance the serviceability of your wagons. This has given us many satisfied and recurring customers.

Our engineers always consider and evaluate safety aspects from a behaviour-based security perspective for the design of the wagon and its variable parts, components, and work routines.

CUSTOM BOGIES FOR SSAB

Commissioned by SSAB, we have manufactured bogies and flat beds for torpedo wagons for the transport of molten pig iron.

The so-called torpedo wagons are used for transports locally within the SSAB area in Luleå, Sweden, and weigh an impressive 600 tonnes when fully loaded. The wagons are built on four bogies with a total of fourteen axles that

carry the tank that transports the molten pig iron from the blast furnace.

Based on SSAB’s drawings, we have manufactured in total twelve bogies and six flat beds for three torpedo wagons. Each unit consists of two three-axle and two fouraxle bogies, as well as two flat beds. The customer carried out the final assembly.

THE PROJECT INCLUDED:

Manufacturing from customer drawings

Manufacturing of custom bogies for local industrial railway Manufacturing of heavy wagon components

Tailored

Ultra-low tare weight for maximised payload

Optimisation for condition-based maintenance

Long-term

Competence from the drawing table through approval processes

WAGON BUILDERS FOR SEVEN DECADES

Kiruna Wagon is co-owned by Rönnquist & Wettainen and Nybergs Mekaniska Verkstad.

The two companies have been manufacturing and developing partners of the Swedish mining industry for several decades. Nybergs Mekaniska Verkstad’s first ore wagons for underground mining were manufactured in the 1940s.

APPARATUS WAGONS FOR THE SWEDISH TRANSPORT ADMINISTRATION

For the Swedish Transport Administration, we have manufactured custom apparatus wagons. The three-axle wagons are used as equipment wagons for storage and work at substations.

In the project, the Swedish Transport Administration’s older model of apparatus wagon was redesigned with an updated wheel suspension and running gear. The previous

welded body construction was replaced with modern lightweight materials in sandwich elements.

The project was carried out in close dialogue with the Transport Administration to tailor the design adjustments as closely as possible to the customer’s needs.

THE PROJECT INCLUDED:

Modernisation of wheel suspension and running gear

Simplified and cost-effective body construction with sandwich elements

Series manufacturing in small series

We are very satisfied with the constructive dialogue through planning and design. The decision to choose a sandwich solution for the walls was a welcome improvement.

HYBRID ROAD-RAIL SERVICE WAGON IN COLLABORATION WITH NMV GROUP FOR LKAB

Together with our co-owner NMV Group, we have built a service wagon for operation on both roads and rail tracks.

The specially designed service wagon was commissioned by LKAB and is used for salvage work and track clean-up after derailments above and underground, among other things. A flexible construction makes it possible to operate

the wagon both on roads and on rail tracks. The rail wheels are easily lowered through a hydraulic function.

Designed with the specific requirements of underground work in mind, the service wagon is equipped with both interior and exterior work lights. Roller doors in all directions allow easy access to equipment even in confined

spaces. The body of the customised service wagon in the photo examples is 4.5 m long and 2 m wide.

Please contact us for more information on how we can tailor this product to suit your specific requirements.

In a project for LKAB Malmtrafik, we have refurbished 50 bottom dump wagons for a more effective unloading, reduced tare weight and enhanced durability.

This project is a great example of how it’s possible to renew existing wagons using modern, high-performance materials.

REFURBISHMENT AND MODERNISATION OF WAGONS WITH DUPLEX STAINLESS STEEL M134: A BRAKE BLOCK FOR NORDIC CONDITIONS FOR LKAB MALMTRAFIK

For the wagons, which transport raw materials between the mining company’s operating locations, undercarriages from older UADK wagons were reused and fitted with new baskets developed by the customer. The construction of the basket entailed an innovative project, where the angle was made steeper and the entire new basket was built in duplex stainless steel.

The duplex steel guarantees a stainless basket surface and good discharge properties in the long term, also for commodities that can be hard to release. The high strength of

the material enables thickness reductions and weight savings, which makes duplex steel a cost-effective alternative for mining transports. Its good weldability and malleability also make it suitable for complex constructions. Normal steel was used in all the outside reinforcements and bars.

In the bottom section or ‘skirt’ of the basket, the new duplex steel was welded onto the reused, black steel parts. To minimise the risk of goods getting stuck, the bottom doors were coated with Matrox® wear plastic, a material that has been specially developed for bulk material handling

in the mining industry and has outstanding strength in demanding applications.

THE PROJECT INCLUDED:

Use of duplex steel and Matrox® plastic for best release properties for bulk

Construction in stainless steel

Refurbishment of existing wagons

Our engineers in Kiruna have extensive experience in designing for a demanding Nordic climate, where ice, snow and low temperatures often cause problems for railway transports.

An example of our winter expertise is Brake Block M134, which is developed specially for Nordic conditions by the wagon user LKAB and CoFren, a leading European supplier of friction materials, in collaboration with Kiruna Wagon.

Brake Block M134 of sintered materials works effectively even when the heat from the brakes melts snow to water, which then freezes to ice. It also contributes to improved balance and reduced flange wear, resulting in a longer lifespan.

Welcome to contact us to learn more about the advantages of Brake Block M134, which is used by both LKAB in Sweden and Rana Gruber in Norway with excellent results.

The basket surface is designed in stainless steel for good long-term release properties and safe bottom discharge of a variety of bulk materials.

Do you have wagons that are not in operation? Or wagons that could be used more effectively or for another purpose?

With vast technical expertise and solid industry experience, we will review your wagon fleet and suggest measures that increase its efficiency, functionality and serviceability.

We offer a wide range of services in the modernisation and redesign of wagons and locomotives, from development and planning to subsequent service and maintenance.
