Sailability round up
By Kay Rawbone
As always, a huge thank you to Hebe Haven Yacht Club for being our home and for the support given to change the lives of many in Hong Kong who otherwise would not have the opportunity to sail.

It was a very busy year for us as we caught up with programmes cancelled due to COVID-19 during 2020 when we were only able to sail for 16 weeks.
Figures for 2021 were amazing and you, HHYC, The Scallywag Foundation, donors and of course our sailors, instructors and volunteers made it happen: • 3179 sailors joining our sailing programs old and new in 2021 • 2046 sailors with disability participating in our programs – included above • 1524 volunteers – not included in the sailing numbers. They continue to support our programs with many sailing with new/inexperienced sailors, whilst also assisting with maintenance and fundraising.
Scallywag Foundation youth sailors included above; • 97 Sessions held providing sailing for 663 new sailors
Here are a few highlights from the past few months before our COVID shutdown again in January 2022.

Treats Conference on Inclusive Sports

Long day at TEDEx Early delivery of boat to TEDEx

Sailability at TEDx Sailability HK attended the TEDx Tin Hau Women's event. As a showpiece, we took along a Hansa 303 dinghy to grab people’s attention and see what we do! Our Senior Sailor Volunteers did an amazing job from the thorough cleaning of the AWA boat, Anchors AWAy, to the refurbishment of the simulator and the transportation. This was their second Ambassador appearance, the first being at the 24Hour Charity Dinghy Race, and they did a fantastic job as they gained confidence to mingle and chat with the event attendees.

Mike Rawbone Challenge Hansa 303 Winner Mark Poon Mike Rawbone Challenge Cup The series concluded on Sunday 12 December with the final races and a prize giving event. Well done to Foo Yuen Wai for finishing first in the 2.4mR class and Mark Poon in the Hansa 303 class.
It was the culmination of three series comprising 25 individual races staged over months. The sailors were tested in a full range of sea and weather conditions from the sweltering heat of summer to the cool of early December.
Special thanks to Catherine Smith, Virgile Bertrand, Fred Vaudaine and other volunteers who assisted with the training and race marshalling during the races.
Social Inclusion Through Sports and Recreation hosted by TREATS Kay Rawbone was part of a panel discussion at Hong Kong Baptist University. The conference was organised by TREATS who have sailed with us for the past 10 years and included the results of a university study that showed taking part in inclusive sport develops a sense of inclusion among both participants and volunteers.

2.4mRs at Southside Regatta
Southside regatta results - 4 and 5 December After two days of sailing to and from the venue and two days of racing with world ranking points at stake the results were as follows in the 2.4mR class: 1st Foo Yuen Wai 2nd Puk Chi Yeung 3rd Leung Wun Wai
24Hour Charity Dinghy Race Cheque Presentation 3 December saw an evening award ceremony for this year’s 24Hour Charity Dinghy Race organised by HHYC. This year the race raised an amazing HK$ 1 million for five local charities. Sailability Hong Kong received HK$200,000. HK$100,000 of this was raised by our amazing senior sailing volunteers who give so much to what we do. They, for the first time, entered their first race at this prestigious event with two boats and were also invaluable as the Stall Team looking after the sign on and off the water and everything else over the weekend.
The Para Warrior 1 team from Sailability, crewed by some of our amazing para sailors won the prize for the fastest average lap time of the event. An amazing feat. The same team also finished first on time and came second in the event overall which takes account of sailing times plus funds raised.
Big boat sailing experience: Senior Sailing Volunteers with members of the Sports Association for the Blind Darkness Fighters enjoyed their first day at sea with Cramond Wong a Sailability Director, aboard his boat Small Toy.
Tier 2 para sailing training: Three sailors from this programme have transferred to our Para Sailing Team. They have been sailing Hansa 303s and have now experienced the Hansa Liberty and the 2.4mR. We will continue to train and increase the sailing ability within this group by providing more race training. We will also look to the recruitment of more youth members to join this team as we work towards Paralympic re-instatement in 2028.
January 2022 updates Sadly, not much to report for January 2022 following the closure of sailing on 7 January. It is unlikely February will be much better. Calendar dates booked for January and February currently show 29 sessions each month. We were only able to undertake 2 sessions in January, one for students with VI from Ebenezer School for the Blind and a training day for Silver Sailor Volunteers completing core training.
Moving forward We look forward to the opening up and restarting of our programmes as soon as possible and the promise of more inclusive and accessible sailing at HHYC during 2022.
Leung Wun Wai

SAILABILITY SAILING FOR SENIORS PROGRAMME
As you may know, Sailability Hong Kong Limited is the only organisation in Hong Kong with opportunities for everyone in our community to sail, irrespective of ability, age, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity or status.

We offer more than sailing. Sailiability is an opportunity to learn a new interest. It is about community integration, new friendships, improved wellbeing, confidence, self-esteem and life skills along with increased physical activity.
For 2021 / 2022, The Hong Kong Club Foundation has sponsored Sailing for Seniors; a threepronged programme comprising:
• Training a group of seniors to become competent sailing buddies to accompany grassroots seniors joining the programme, on what may be their first sailing experience. We were over-subscribed when recruiting and now have a group of very active, committed, keen and able volunteers who are enjoying giving back to the community with a renewed sense of purpose in their lives. • Sailing sessions for grassroots seniors— recruited via elderly care centres, churches, community centres, NGOs etc. After a very hot summer, we are seeing many happy new sailors, many wanting to return for more. • Educational excursions including a geotour in a catamaran into Sai Kung waters for new sailors together with a family member, friend or carer. For some this will be a journey of a lifetime; living surrounded by water and seeing Hong Kong’s natural beauty from the sea.
The programme has provided a two-way street for those involved; giving and receiving whilst enriching and changing the lives of everyone who joins us.
