Commodore's Report

DON JOHNSTON Commodore Managing in the pandemic I sent you a note just before Chinese New Year starting with the words “The gloom and doom persists but, despite this, I awoke this morning feeling extremely optimistic about the Club’s future and I would like to share my reasons with you.” Given what has happened since then, you can be forgiven for wondering whether I have lost my perspective! Despite the issues which we are now facing, I remain convinced that, when we have the luxury of looking back at 2022, from say 2024, this year will be seen as the turning point.

The current outbreak is worrying and there are many diverse views on how best to manage the COVID restrictions. Nevertheless, the restrictions are laws with penalties and these are being strictly enforced. The Club’s management and staff are tasked with overseeing these restrictions on our premises and I ask that you be patient and understanding so that we can stay open.

Updated Articles of Association The Articles of Association (AoA) are to be updated and the briefing of GenCom occurred in January 2022 with only a few minor, but necessary, refinements to the presentation. After the town hall briefing to members in September 2019, it is entirely appropriate that members be briefed and updated again. I anticipate that you will receive an email package in early March 2022 advising of a members’ webinar likely to be held in late March. We will explain the key updates to the AoA to ensure they are fit for purpose and compliant with the current Companies Ordinance. Following this, if there are no unresolved issues, we will seek to hold a General Meeting of Members to ratify the new AoA.

Occupational Health and Safety, and Sustainability The Club has issued policies on both issues and these are available on notice boards and on the website for you to read. In both issues, there are opportunities for further improvement and we are actively doing so by appointing an officer whose sole duty is to guide management and GenCom.

In conclusion Please take the time to read the reports from Paul Arkwright, Rob Quinlivan, Bridget Chan and Eddy Lo. They are packed full of useful and positive information.

I wish you all a very healthy and happy New Year of the Tiger!
