General Manager's Report

PAUL C. ARKWRIGHT General Manager Happy Spring and who knows where we will be by the time you read this (which I penned on the first day of CNY). And with my feet firmly under the table now (save for my desk moving—see ‘Driving staff up the wall’ below) allow me to fill you in on lots of positive change that is afoot in all aspects of life at Hebe.

Type D operations in Restaurant & Balcony For those just emerging from hibernation and/or returning from a SpaceX holiday—who might have missed it, the Government is stepping up local measures in respect of COVID variants. In line with this and to keep things as safe as possible for everyone at the Club, by the time you read this we will have moved to Type D operations (or more stringent measures if required by the Government) and will continue to do so until restrictions and life stabilises a bit.

The good news is that this means you can now enjoy meals with up to 4 people at each table at the time of writing. To save you time at check-in, please upload your latest vaccination certificate to your LeaveHome Safe app if you haven’t done so already. Those without proof of vaccination certification/ exemption will not be allowed access to the Restaurant/Balcony with effect from 9.00 am on 4 February 2022. As well as your normal HHYC LHS App QR code scan and temperature check upon entry to the Club, members wishing to use the Restaurant and Balcony will have to do a second scan, and show proof of vaccination status (at least one dose) or proof of exemption before they can enter.

Single Restaurant entry point (near car park): To help facilitate scanning in everyone and checking vax records, we will close off the pedestrian bridge entrance to the Restaurant (in which the “nook” now becomes our temporary General Office reception area), and we will adopt a single entry point to the Restaurant and Balcony for members via the staircases near the car park and member washrooms.

Note during this time, the pedestrian bridge access will be exclusively reserved for: • Accessing the new “nook” General Office and parcel pick up for members • Emergency exit for the Restaurant & Balcony • Disabled access to the Restaurant & Balcony

Sailing Centre gets a new home Rob and his team have now moved into their long-awaited new home next to CY’s Project Office in the boatyard. I was sad to see the SC team leave an empty blue room behind in the General Office, but so happy for them as the team trundled all their belongings over to their new home. It was smiles all round, as the SC team could finally swing a cat in their new office, which as well as animal-swinging functionality, now also features purpose-built secure storage for all our VHF radios, Race Management Pelican boxes, J/80 boxes and Safety Boat boxes. Wow…it’s scarily organised in there right now.

Staff Townhall & annual dinner In the nick of time, before the move to more stringent regulations, we manged to hold the first annual dinner for our staff in two years. We hosted almost every single HHYC staff member at Chun Kee Seafood restaurant in Sai Kung. I used the opportunity to give a bilingual Townhall address to everyone to help explain the rollout of new staff contracts, which was followed by fun and games and plenty of food and drinks for all. The Annual Spring Dinner for GenCom and Staff, is unfortunately still on hold due to on-going COVID restrictions at the time of writing (as indeed it has been for the past two years).

Restaurant & kitchen renovations completed The replacement works of the restaurant AC system started on schedule on 3 January 2022 and were finished eight days ahead of schedule on 21 January 2022. The renovations include a new state-of-the-art Daikin VRV air-con system that saves energy, is customisable for each room, and is also reverse cycle—so it can keep us warm in winter and cool in summer. As part of that big project, which required the closure of the entire Restaurant, we also took the opportunity to simultaneously replace the Hydron air filtration system in the kitchen, replace leaking skylight panels above the Restaurant, deep-clean the floors and repaint the restaurant walls.

Driving you up the wall The restaurant renovations necessitated the removal of all the existing reciprocal club burgees, charts, faded photos and the like from the walls. The survey for what members would like to see put back up on the walls garnered some great feedback and with this in mind, moving forward, a new hybrid model of displaying both old and new photographs will be adopted. These will be rotated from time to time to help share the love and keep it fresh. As for the reciprocal club burgees, we will be creating a compilation of images of all the burgess and presenting them together in one combined display.

Driving staff up the wall The concurrent washroom renovations have created a significant amount of noise and vibration which made working in the General Office … grating … to say the least. So, to help keep the admin team sane, we have temporarily swapped over locations for the General Office (which is now in the blue container near the bus stop entrance to the Club) and the staff canteen (which is now where SC used to be) during this period, which we expect to be for about four months. We have also banned any works during the lunchtime periods to ensure members can continue to dine in peace.

Hey Mr Postman The members’ pigeon holes remain in the same place, but if you have a parcel, we will let you know, and will ask you to pick it up from the new temporary “nook” office near the main entrance.

Onwards, upwards and hopefully a bit more seawards in the near future…
