Offering guests unprecedented access to the resort’ s stunning natural environment, the newly built The Nature Centre at The Datai Langkawi makes education fun and interactive for guests of all ages.

In addition to being a space where the resort’ s naturalist team,

led by acclaimed environmentalist Irshad Mobarak, host talks on

the region’ s flora and fauna, The Nature Centre’ s shaded outdoor pavilion is a departure point for the resort’ s ever-expanding and evolving series of nature excursions and wildlife tours.

For early birds, the Rainforest Awakening tour explores the forest as

it wakes, with a special focus on resident bird, monkey, and squirrel species, while Rainforest After Dark delves into the darkness in

search of nocturnal creatures, including bats, flying squirrels, and flying lemurs. Guests will also make for the beach to learn about

coral and fish populations during snorkelling safaris and coastal walks led by resident marine biologists. Anyone who’ s visited The Datai Langkawi before will know the

importance the resort places on the preservation of its surrounding rainforest and marine environment. Set on one of Asia’ s most

beautiful beaches, backdropped by primordial mountains, and

wreathed by a pristine 10-million- year - old rainforest that’ s home to Dusky langurs, shy Sunda colugos, Asian smooth-coated

otters and Great Hornbills, The Datai Langkawi is unlike any other property in Asia.

Developed as part of the resort’ s recent major renovation, The

Nature Centre at The Datai Langkawi elevates the property’ s popular nature-based activities by adding levels of research and interaction rarely seen in a hotel. Boasting a design inspired by the

longhouses of Borneo, The Nature Centre features an insightful library, a documentary viewing space, and a dedicated Tea Corner

serving curative brews made with indigenous ingredients from the rainforest, many of which are also used in the spa. 8

The Nature Centre offers visiting scientists, naturalists and

researchers a base from which they can study the rainforest and surrounding seas as part of a wider effort to safeguard these resources for generations to come.

Fly By Night

Beijing-bound travellers have a new culinary destination to visit with the arrival of stylish neighbourhood hangout Superfly at The Opposite House.

As part of a renovation that spanned many components of the edgy

Beijing hotel, Swire’ s The Opposite House has opened Superfly, a lively spin on Sichuan’ s“ fly restaurant ” trend towards casual eateries famed for their authentic fare and laid-back ambiance.

Combining captivating neo-pop décor with delicious and accessible

comfort food that’ s laced with inspiration from both Sichuan and

the Chinese capital, the new eatery also pays homage to the city’ s booming craft beer scene thanks to a collaboration with award-

winning local brewery Great Leap, ensuring that Superfly promises to be the hottest new locale in already trendy Sanlitun.

Designed by Bangkok’ s AvroKO Design to capture the energy and

eclecticism of China’ s contemporary youth culture, the retro-

futuristic space is dressed in boldly patterned ceramic tiles, salmonhued terrazzo tables, deep-set leather pullman booths, custom

chandeliers, and vintage wallpaper. Elements of graphic novels

and pop culture, including a signature video installation showing early martial arts flicks, continue the new restaurant’ s eye-catching

persona. Superfly also boasts a terrace wreathed by lush greenery for Beijing’ s balmy summer months.

The new eatery’ s kitchen is helmed by Chef Li Dong from the hotel’ s Michelin-starred Jing Yaa Tang, who interprets classic Sichuan

dishes - including some from his own childhood - with innovation

and imagination. Diners should look out for the likes of homemade Tian Shui‘Sweet Water ’noodles with Sichuan peppercorns and

crushed peanuts; dumplings inspired by Great Leap’ s own signature cheeseburger; Bobo chicken; and vegetarian ma po tofu.

Dishes can be paired with Great Leap’ s craft beer range as well as an

inspired cocktail list created by Proof & Co that offers a playful take on classic Chinese flavours and vintage soft drinks.

The new eatery is a fitting addition to The Opposite House, which is

itself an artistic and cultural destination acclaimed for its modern art. The hotel’ s collection ranges from Origami, a lobby level

installation by The Opposite House designer Kengo Kuma through

to Li Xiao Feng’ s Beijing Memories series of figures crafted from shattered traditional ceramic.
