Celebrating HealthNet's 55 Years as a Patient Centered Medical Home
Dorothy was right. There’s no place like home.
Since 1968, HealthNet has been honored to serve as the healthcare home for hundreds of thousands of people – most of whom live in overlooked communities across Central Indiana.
From our beginnings in a converted bank building, staffed by one nurse, a team of volunteers, and one physician, HealthNet has grown into a regional organization with over 37 locations and 700 team members serving Marion, Monroe, and Morgan counties. As a primary care medical home, we provide primary care, behavioral health, dental, and support services for more than 60,000 people each year through our 10 community health centers and outreach programs.
Our mission is to improve lives with compassionate health care and support services, regardless of ability to pay. We know that staying healthy encompasses so much more than a doctor’s visit for many of our neighbors. From bus passes to get to a new job until that first paycheck comes; to mentoring a single mother learning to care for her newborn; to helping a small business owner navigate health insurance enrollment; to helping a retiree obtain prescriptions he can’t afford, HealthNet plays a vital role in opening doors for people who need care.
On behalf of our diverse and growing community, we are enormously grateful to you our partners and supporters. Thank you for joining us to celebrate HealthNet’s history of caring for those in need and our unwavering pledge to provide the highest quality, comprehensive, compassionate care now and in the future.
That commitment has endured for 55 years. It will never change.
It’s hard to believe that it was only 5 years ago that we announced the formation of the HealthNet Foundation at our 50th Anniversary Celebration.
What a pivotal 5 years it has been! We are thankful for the Foundation’s efforts in helping us expand access to care and provide much needed assistance for our patients, their families and our team members.
We look forward to continuing our collaboration with the HealthNet Foundation and marveling at what we can accomplish together!
Thank you for supporting HealthNet through the HealthNet Foundation.
Sincerely,

Matthew earned a living as an elite athlete until he began experiencing injuries that led to the use of multiple medications for pain relief. As a result, he became addicted to the medications leading to a life that began spiraling out of control. The family experienced a loss of income, evictions, and incurred more than $35,000 worth of debt. They were homeless with nowhere to go. Last year, this family of six: dad (Mathew), mom (Eugene), and their four children walked through the doors of HealthNet’s Homeless Initiative Program (HIP) seeking a solution to their many challenges. With the help of HIP’s case manager, Mathew sobered off the medications, is now seeing a specialist for his long-term injuries, has gained employment and is goal setting. With your support, the HIP team has been able to help Mathew and his family recover from their loss and provide them with the tools necessary for a successful future.
Thanks again for all that you've done for us, we truly would have never made it back standing on our own without the assistance we've received. Even if we had somehow been able to do so, it would have taken so much longer. Sorry for my rambling and this novel I'm sending you, we are just so very thankful that you and your organization have made it possible for us to get a grip on our lives again!
I was in serious trouble mentally when we fortunately somehow become involved with you. As a father and husband who truly cares for and loves his wife and children, it was very hard when we were struggling as badly as we were. It is my responsibility and duty to protect and provide for them, and regardless of intentions, my ability to properly take care of them had virtually disappeared. Just being given this opportunity to correct so many aspects of myself, which allowed me the opportunity to truly get our footing back and be in what is quite possibly a better position than ever before. Well, we will be in a better place by the time we have completed this program. We will also have gained so much wisdom and knowledge for life, through some very hard lessons and very positive experiences and relationships gained throughout this time. Overall, we are just so very thankful and grateful for all you have done.
Toby Salyers, a lifelong resident of Indianapolis’ southwest side, has served as a patient representative on HealthNet’s Board of Directors for over 11 years, is a past board chair and local board chair, and currently serves on the Board’s Executive Committee. Toby volunteers with HealthNet to give back for the wonderful care his grandmother received as a patient at HealthNet Southwest Health & Dental Center.
“My grandma was the most important person in my life,” he said. “After college, I moved back to Indianapolis to care for her. She would go to the doctor, but when she came home she would have trouble remembering what the doctor had told her. So I started going to the doctor with her. As I did that, I learned that the medical conditions she was dealing with were pretty serious. She wasn't taking them seriously, but they were.
“One time she had a follow-up appointment that was very important. I really wanted to go, but I could not. I had a meeting that I couldn't reschedule. So I called the doctor's office and said, ‘I'm sorry, but I can't make it to this appointment.’ I remember because it was a snowy, cold day. Her doctor sent her nurse to my grandma's house and brought her to her appointment. She then called me and told me the result of her visit and the next steps for her care.
It was at that moment that I fell in love with HealthNet. I didn't even have family that would do something like that for me or for my grandma. I just couldn't believe that a health center would care so much about a person that meant the most to me in my life.”
In addition to serving on HealthNet’s Board of Directors, Toby advocates for community health centers at the local, state, and national levels.
“Support for HealthNet and community health centers is absolutely crucial. Without adequate funding, we wouldn't be able to serve the communities that we now serve. So literally millions of people would go without health care.”

Who is the hero in your life? If you ask Heather Brummett, she’ll tell you her hero is her dad, Randall. “He’s my everything,” she said. She has fond memories growing up in a close and loving family. Her dad was a single parent, yet managed to always be there for Heather and her sister, no matter what.
Now Heather serves as her dad’s caregiver and health advocate. When Randall had a toothache that just wouldn’t go away, Heather made an appointment for him at a HealthNet Bloomington Health Center.
“They literally saved my dad’s life. Had I made an appointment for him at any other dental office, they would have pulled his tooth and that would have been it. But at HealthNet, they took his blood pressure first and saw that it was dangerously high. He had no idea.”
A health center nurse practitioner quickly ran tests, and discovered that Randall might have a rare form of blood cancer. She quickly referred him to an oncologist, who confirmed the diagnosis. After the initial shock of the diagnosis, Randall began receiving ongoing cancer care and gradually began to feel better. His blood pressure returned to normal. He could finally get his toothache addressed. It turned out that Randall’s medical conditions had made his oral health worse, and all his teeth needed to be removed. The health center team connected Randall with an oral surgeon who discounted the care.
Affording expensive dentures was another story. Thankfully, her father was able to apply to the Volunteers in Medicine Patient Assistance Fund, which helps HealthNet Bloomington Health Center patients with medical bills incurred as part of their HealthNet treatment plan that they might not otherwise be able to afford. It was created by the Volunteers in Medicine Board of Directors to ensure that no HealthNet Bloomington Health Center patient is forced to choose between their medical care and other necessities of life.
“He has a full set of dentures and can now chew food, and eat a better diet to help him fight cancer,” Heather said. “I am so thankful. I don’t know what we would have done without this amazing care team and the support of the patient assistance fund.”
Through an unexpected turn of events in her family, one day HealthNet School-Based Services Medical Assistant Nikki Harris found herself with emergency custody of her 3-year-old and 7-month-old nephews.
“It happened so suddenly. I was overwhelmed. I wanted to help them through a difficult time, but truthfully, I didn’t know what to do or where to start,” Nikki said.
Thankfully, Nikki’s HealthNet family surrounded her with support as her caregiver mindset kicked into action. Nikki’s supervisor worked with her to flex her work schedule as she adjusted to her new role. Her supervisor also put out a call to other team members for donated gift cards, diapers, and emergency supplies. “Their response was unbelievable,” Nikki said. “I couldn’t believe that my coworkers would help out like they did.”
More than a year later, Nikki continues to parent the two boys. She loves watching them grow and thrive in spite of the tough times they’ve been through. “I am so thankful for this opportunity to help my nephews. I don’t know how I would have survived at the beginning without the support of my HealthNet family,” she said.
For the more than 700 team members at HealthNet, personal crises like these happen every day, said Chief Administrative Officer Sheila Allen. “Human Resources is often the first place they reach out to for help. For years we have looked for better ways to support team members facing devastating financial hardships like this one.”
That ongoing need led the HealthNet Foundation to create the HealthNet Family Fund for Employee Assistance in late 2022. Thanks to the support of generous donors, the fund has helped 18 HealthNet team members with limited resources who are facing major financial hardships with an expenditure thus far of $8,367.29. The fund provides much-needed assistance with emergency childcare, rent, medical and funeral expenses as well as many other resources.
“Many of our team members live in the neighborhoods we serve. They help patients handle health crises while sometimes navigating personal crises of their own. The fund really helps bridge the gap for our team members when the unexpected happens,” said Allen.
