Healthcare for all. All in one place. Your Health. Our Passion.

Dear Friends, Fifty-five years ago, a group of residents had a great idea. They would organize to bring about something that hadn’t been done before in their neighborhood: the availability of affordable, quality health care for people who needed it, but didn’t have access to it. A partnership formed and HealthNet’s first health center opened its doors in a renovated bank building near Fountain Square in Indianapolis. Curtains separated exam rooms; medicines were stored in the basement bank vault. If able, patients contributed a quarter for their care in a jar on the receptionist’s desk. The group’s idea gathered momentum thanks to the perseverance, passion and commitment these folks put into it. In doing so, they opened doors for their community – doors to health, hope and a better future for their families. This attitude has remained at the heart of HealthNet’s work ever since. HealthNet has grown into a regional organization with over 37 locations and 700 team members serving Marion, Monroe, and Morgan counties. As a primary care medical home, HealthNet provides primary care, behavioral health, dental, and support services for more than 60,000 people each year through our 10 community health centers and outreach programs. Our mission is to improve lives with compassionate health care and support services, regardless of ability to pay. We know that staying healthy encompasses so much more than a doctor’s visit for many of our neighbors. From bus passes to get to a new job until that first paycheck comes; to mentoring a single mother learning to care for her newborn; to coaching a homeless veteran to self-sufficiency; to helping a retiree obtain prescriptions he can’t afford, HealthNet plays a vital role in opening doors for people who need care. We hope you enjoy learning more about some of these stories through our 2023 Annual Report. Thank you for your continued support. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of thousands of families across Central Indiana.

Health Care Access Expands in Speedway

In January, HealthNet Speedway Health & Dental Center opened as the new home for HealthNet West Health Center, which celebrated 10 years of service to the west Indianapolis community in 2022. The health center had reached capacity and was landlocked, with no room to expand. The new 15,225 sq. ft. space more than doubled the health center’s capacity and made room for the addition of several new services. Designed by Halstead Architects and constructed by Pepper Construction, the health center provides comprehensive primary care services, including adult care, pediatrics, behavioral health, OB/GYN, dental, chiropractic care, nutrition, social work, insurance enrollment assistance and access to discounted prescriptions. A community open house was held in April to celebrate the health center’s new location at 6020 Crawfordsville Rd. in Speedway. With the move, the health center changed its name to HealthNet Speedway Health & Dental Center in honor of its new location.

Dental Services Expansion

Thanks to American Rescue Plan Act funding, a dental services expansion opened at HealthNet Barrington Health & Dental Center in March. The expansion added 6 dental operatories (for a total of 13). 7

Eyes on Access: New Vision Center

HealthNet Pharmacy Opens

HealthNet’s new Pharmacy at HealthNet Barrington Health & Dental Center opened in April. The pharmacy is available to HealthNet patients as well as the community.

Planning began in 2023 to repurpose half of HealthNet’s Administration building as a clinical annex to increase access to much-needed services such as podiatry, chiropractic care, behavioral health and a fullservice vision center. The vision center will offer comprehensive vision care as well as eye glasses and contact fittings on site. Construction is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2024.

Medical Assistant Training Program Begins Everyone is so compassionate. I’m treated like family, rather than a patient.

HealthNet partnered with the National Institute of Medical Assistant Advancement (NIMAA) to begin HealthNet’s own Medical Assistant Training Program in 2023. NIMAA is an accredited, nonprofit education institute based in Colorado that trains future community health center medical assistants across 16 states to work effectively in today’s high-performing primary care settings.

The program offers a debt-free path to become a certified medical assistant. The students completed 8 months of online coursework through NIMAA and participated in hands-on clinical training at HealthNet’s health centers, as well as skills practice with a HealthNet Health Education skills coach. The program cost was covered by HealthNet for students who agree to work at HeathNet for a minimum of 2 years. 9
