HealthNet Foundation 2023 Impact Statement
Dear Neighbors and Community Partners, It’s hard to believe that it was only 5 years ago that we announced the formation of the HealthNet Foundation at HealthNet’s 50th Anniversary Celebration. What a pivotal 5 years it has been! We are thankful for your support in helping us expand access to care and provide much-needed assistance for HealthNet patients, their families, and HealthNet team members. As the new year approaches, we look forward to continuing our collaboration to make a difference for those we serve in Central Indiana. Thank you for supporting HealthNet through the HealthNet Foundation. Sincerely, Cindy Brumbarger, M.Ed., BSN Interim Executive Director HealthNet Foundation

55th Anniversary Gala A sold-out crowd of nearly 400 supporters joined the HealthNet Foundation for its A Night in the Emerald City Gala on September 15, 2023, at the Crane Bay Event Center in Indianapolis. The event celebrated HealthNet’s 55th anniversary as a patient-centered medical home. As a notfor-profit, HealthNet provides affordable primary health care and support services to more than 60,000 individuals in central Indiana. The contribution raised at the event will support HealthNet’s patient assistance efforts and the HealthNet Homeless Initiative Program. The gala was supported through many generous sponsorships made by community partners, local businesses, and members of the Board of Directors, including silver sponsors Cook Medical and Kreig DeVault; social impact bronze sponsors CareSource, Humana, and Patterson Dental; health equity sponsors LabCorp, and Metropolitan Indianapolis Central Indiana AHEC; and healthcare hero sponsors Executive Image, Faith Hope and Love Community, Inc., Halstead Architects, Indiana Latino Expo, KeyBank, MDwise, Inc., Old National Bank, On Mission, United Northeast Community Development Corporation, and West Indianapolis Development Corporation.
Patient Assistance Heather’s Story Who is the hero in your life? If you ask Heather Brummett, she’ll tell you her hero is her dad, Randall. “He’s my everything,” she said. She has fond memories growing up in a close and loving family. Her dad was a single parent, yet managed to always be there for Heather and her sister, no matter what. Now Heather serves as her dad’s caregiver and health advocate. When Randall had a toothache that just wouldn’t go away, Heather made an appointment for him at HealthNet Bloomington Health Center. “They literally saved my dad’s life. Had I made an appointment for him at any other dental office, they would have pulled his tooth and that would have been it. But at HealthNet, they took his blood pressure first and saw that it was dangerously high. He had no idea.” A health center nurse practitioner quickly ran tests, and discovered that Randall might have a rare form of blood cancer. She quickly referred him to an oncologist, who confirmed the diagnosis. After the initial shock of the diagnosis, Randall began receiving ongoing cancer care and gradually began to feel better. His blood pressure returned to normal. He could finally get his toothache addressed. It turned out that Randall’s medical conditions had made his oral health worse, and all his teeth needed to be removed. The health center team connected Randall with an oral surgeon who discounted the care.
Affording expensive dentures was another story. Thankfully, her father was able to apply to the Volunteers in Medicine Patient Assistance Fund, which helps HealthNet Bloomington Health Center patients with medical bills incurred as part of their health treatment plan that they might not otherwise be able to afford. It was created by the Volunteers in Medicine Board of Directors to ensure that no HealthNet Bloomington Health Center patient is forced to choose between their medical care and other necessities of life. “He has a full set of dentures and can now chew food, and eat a better diet to help him fight cancer,” Heather said. “I am so thankful. I don’t know what we would have done without this amazing care team and the support of the patient assistance fund.”
Doctors and Donuts Circle of Giving The HealthNet Foundation is looking ahead to expand philanthropic efforts with the creation of a Circle of Giving program. Membership would be open to anyone interested in raising funds to support the Foundation’s mission and work to diminish health inequities and improve access to care. Participants would receive periodic invitations for behind-the-scenes tours, volunteer opportunities, educational seminars, and membership events where they have opportunities to learn about community health needs and see the impact of their collective generosity. If this piques your interest and you’d like to receive periodic updates about the Foundation’s Circle of Giving plans, contact Interim Executive Director Cindy Brumbarger at (317) 957-2000 or cindy.brumbarger@indyhealthnet.org or Donor Relations Coordinator Ashli McVey at ashli.mcvey@indyhealthnet. org or 317.957.2136.
On November 30th, the HealthNet Foundation treated supporters to coffee and donuts and a “sneak peek” preview tour of the future home of the HealthNet Vision Center and Clinical Annex. In 2024 HealthNet will repurpose the west half of its Administration building into a clinical annex that will include behavioral health, podiatry, and chiropractic services as well as a full-service Vision Center offering glasses and contact lens fittings on site. The Vision Center will be open to the community as well as HealthNet patients. Thanks to American Rescue Plan grant funding, the renovation is expected to be completed by the 2nd quarter of 2024. This effort is part of HealthNet’s long-term strategic plan and focus on access, outreach, and the provision of additional patient care services based on community need.
