From the very onset, I take great pleasure in welcoming all the new students who have joined the university this year in various programs. EMIRATI WOMEN MAKING STRIDES IN WELLNESS, FITNESS, AND SPORTS

In honor of upcoming UAE National Day, HEALTH meets four dynamic Emirati women who are making wellbeing and optimal health a way of life.

Emirati life coach, author, and social media personality Hala Kazim inculcates wellness in many ways; from ‘Journey Through Change’---- her organization to help women find their inner strength to her new television program. NEW TELEVISION PROGRAM “The show is on MBC Saudia, one of the talk channels in the Arab world, and the program is called ‘Kalam Nawaem’. It is basically about society, health, and mental health, and anything to do with the community. I am one of the speakers and life coaches there.” THE AUTHOR “I have also published two books. The first one talks about my experiences and my humble beginnings. It also talks about various obstacles I faced while hiking with my esteemed participants. In my second book, I shared valuable thoughts about one’s inner self and society as a whole.” UAE AND THE CONCEPT OF HEALTH “H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed just recently announced that there is a big challenge to wellness and fitness here. So, UAE is going moving very fast towards taking care of our health and our body.” FINDING TIME TO UNWIND “First, I do meditation. Secondly, I travel at least once a year by myself. I disconnect as much as I can from social media and other distractions. And I read, do massage, and walk alone to unwind. Also, I disconnect by spending time with my family and friends.” Nov/Dec 2017

16

Fitness Instructor Amna Al Marri embarked upon fitness in 2012 by taking kickboxing and body pump classes. She then trained in kickboxing for about two years and after the trainer left, she moved on to CrossFit. INSPIRATION “Firstly, I inspired myself, and secondly, my parents were encouraging. So, basically the motivators were my mom, dad, and my kickboxing trainer.” CHALLENGES “My family was ashamed when I ran outside in the neighborhood with a hoodie. However, I was convinced that as long as I was properly dressed and covered, I wasn’t doing anything wrong. Until one day, I appeared in a NIKE ad doing the same thing; running with a hijab and all. I got a lot of ‘how dare you do this’ comments, but more ‘I’m so proud of you’ compliments.” WELLNESS AND HEALTH IN UAE “This has changed a lot. Especially now, women are more open to doing sports, not only a normal gym session, but participating in many different sports and winning races. We now have a wide variety of sports and in fact, our leaders are encouraging and challenging, and even reward us for the sake of health and fitness.”

Zahra Lari has been ice skating since she was 12, but started training properly and taking the sport more seriously at age 15. Outdoor-adventure professional Hanady Alhashmi began exploring interesting old settlements and villages along mountain cliffs in the UAE and Oman. Some were easy to reach, but some required advanced skills, speed, and endurance to reach so she began training and increasing her endurance from 6 to 11 hour hikes. OVERCOMING OBSTACLES “What I love about this sport is that the learning capabilities are endless; it challenges you not only physically, but mentally. Getting out of your comfort zone is the biggest step, doing your research, and taking the necessary steps to make sure you are reducing the risks as much as possible. This includes going with the right group, knowledgeable guides and leaders, and choosing the right equipment and shoes. It is all a learning process…” EMIRATI WOMEN MAKING STRIDES “Thanks to social media, women are becoming more active and others are following in their footsteps. UAE women, with the support of their families, friends, and country are now reaching new heights-- climbing mountains, running triathlons, getting into CrossFit games, and much more.” MOVING FORWARD “I have completed four of the seven summits up till now, namely; Kilimanjaro, Elbrus Aconcagua, and Denali, in that order. What is remaining are Vinson, Carstensz Pyramid, and Everest. The seven summits are the highest mountain peaks in the seven continents as per the ‘Messner Version’. I aspire to climb all seven summits, and put the UAE on the map. The following years will be more about focusing on more technical climbs in order to improve my skills and better prepare for the expeditions to follow.”

THE START "When I was 12, I saw the movie ‘Ice Princess’ and immediately fell in love with the technicality and beauty of the sport. The movie looks at the sport from a scientific point of view as well as the athletic struggles that are prevalent in society. It was from this movie that my journey in sports began.” MANY MOTIVATORS “I don’t really have a key motivator. I have many motivators; the first is 'The Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies Sports Academy' which has been my supporter and encourager since the beginning. They believe in me and have the same goals for women in sports that I have. The second is my family who have supported and made sacrifices for me. The third is all of the women that struggle to find acceptance or ability to participate in sports. They motivate me to keep doing what I am doing to see change in society’s perspective for women in sports worldwide.” WOMEN ENTERING SPORTS “The changes of women in sports in the UAE in the past decade are phenomenal. The work that 'The Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies Sports Academy' is doing for UAE women is amazing. It is through their support that the UAE has female disciplines in almost all sports and host multiple international competitions and Ladies Sports Conferences each year. Also, I think the way people think of women in sports is changing and society is more accepting of this new healthy role that women are playing.” H Nov/Dec 2017

BATTLING OBESITY

In the UAE alone, approximately 67 percent of males and 71 percent of females are considered overweight or obese and globally, obesity is fast becoming the world’s most dangerous epidemic with lethal consequences. But HEALTH learns that obesity can actually be avoided with lifestyle modification.

Obesity is a Process Obesity doesn’t happen overnight and is one of the reasons we should be taking extra-precaution with our weight and lifestyles now. Before becoming obese, there is a pre-obesity stage where

Nov/Dec 2017

26

an individual is fatter than the recommended height and weight range for their age, explains Dr. Faruq M. Badiuddin, specialist general surgeon. If this situation goes unchecked, then it can progress into obesity, which is up to a

BMI (Body Mass Index) of 30.

Reasons

Dr. Graham Simpson, author and anti-aging expert, asserts there are two key factors that trigger obesity: carbohydrates and insulin. “Our dietary

environment has changed dramatically with the introduction of high sugar, trans-fats and omega 6-fats,” he says, and also, our basic choices and quantities of foods we eat have changed dramatically over the years. Add to this, the expansion of both the fast food industry and soda industry, which has further exacerbated the problem.

Holistic Treatment

In the UAE, rates of obesity are twice the global average and those battling with obesity are confronted with several challenges, including misguided advice and extreme quick-fix solutions, says bariatric psychologist Dr. Mario Aoun. “The key is a personalized approach for each patient,” he tells, as there is no one-size-fits-all formula here. The next important thing is to adopt a holistic approach that considers the mental and emotional aspects of the patient. “Sometimes you just need help in understanding what you’re going through as gaining excessive weight due to overeating or facing other psychological issues simply means that you need help,” he explains.

Management

Management of obesity is a complex science and as obesity is caused by a combination of factors, a team of nutritionists and psychologists work

with the patient to help reduce weight through diet, exercise, counselling, and other tools. “In some cases, depending on the severity of the obesity condition, surgery is recommended as the last resort," elaborates Dr. Aoun, and this is where bariatric surgery comes in. This procedure involves reducing the size of the stomach, either with a gastric band, removal of a section of the stomach, or re-routing the intestine to a small stomach pouch, so that the amount of food the stomach can hold is restricted. “However, patients who undergo bariatric surgery are required to alter their lifestyle and follow a diet plan for permanent results,” he cautions.

Intermittent Fasting

A very big trend in wellness these days is intermittent fasting which is basically stretching the time span between meals, from eight hours to even more. A proponent of this is alternative medicine expert and osteopathic physician Dr. Joseph Michael Mercola. He explains it takes about six to eight hours for your body to metabolize your glycogen stores and after that, you start to shift to burning fat. However, if you are replenishing your glycogen by eating every eight hours (or sooner), it becomes harder for your body to use its fat stores as fuel. H

Weight Loss Plateau Tips

We have all had times when, despite our strict diet and exercise, the weight refuses to budge. This happens because our metabolism — the process of burning calories for energy — slows down as we lose muscle. Try these tips to help: Cut more calories. Reduce your daily calorie intake by 200 calories, but do not go below 1,200 calories. Add more fiber. Experts suggest aiming for a minimum of 30 grams a day from vegetables, whole grains, and fruits. Shake up your workout. Increase the amount of time you exercise by an additional 15 to 30 minutes. Cut the salt out. Retention can happen for a number of reasons, but the most common is consuming too much sodiumfilled processed foods. Get your sleep. According to research, too little sleep can lead to increased levels of stress hormones, which have been shown to cause weight and fat gain, especially in your midsection.

Dubai Takes Action

With obesity contributing to the staggering rates of diabetes, His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai Government and Dubai Sports Council launched the inaugural Dubai Fitness Challenge. The aim of this is to motivate Dubai’s citizens, residents, and visitors to increase their physical activity by committing to a minimum of 30 minutes of daily activity for a span of 30 days through a wide range of fitness activities, sports, or exercise.

Lose it the Right Way WITH THE FESTIVE SEASON JUST ABOUT HERE, LOTS OF RICH AND FATTENING FOOD WILL BECOME THE NORM FOR MANY OF US, RESULTING IN A FEW ADDED KILOS WITH UNWANTED BULGES. AVOID THE URGE TO CRASH DIET AND INSTEAD, USE OUR SIMPLE, YET EFFECTIVE STRATEGIES FOR HEALTHY WEIGHT LOSS.

Tips to Help Shed Your Last Few Kilos • It is important to reduce your

calorie levels as you reduce your weight. Remember, 3500 calories equals 2.2 kilos of body weight. If you reduce your diet by 500 calories per day and increase your exercise daily, you can lose a healthy one kilo per month. • Avoid cutting too many calories because then your body goes into starvation mode, it will start to store fat and use protein instead, which will reduce your muscle mass and slow your metabolic rate. • Remember to drink lots of water and avoid fizzy drinks.

Nov/Dec 2017

28

• Do not weigh yourself every

day and avoid becoming obsessive over your weight loss.

Snack on Negative Calorie Foods

A negative calorie food is essentially a food that actually burns more calories during digestion than they offer. So throw out the bag of potato chips and start snacking on these foods… • Watermelon • Celery • Grapefruit • Lettuce • Apples • Oranges

Let’s face it; after a heavy holiday meal, we usually feel sluggish and tired. To help with this, HEALTH reveals some of the best natural foods that can help kick start your system into cleansing itself for optimal wellbeing.

Lemon Water

A warm cup of lemon and honey water on an empty stomach every early morning can boost your body’s natural cleansing system, not to mention give you great, glowing skin.

Avocados

Packed with fiber and good-for-you essential fatty acids, this is a must for optimal health and for a natural detox.

Beets

A very important aspect of detox meals, beets are high in fiber and antioxidants, and low in calories.

Broccoli

Broccoli helps your

liver detox by boosting its enzymes and enables easy elimination of toxins.

Warm Water

Avoid drinking cold water and instead, make it a habit to sip warm water throughout the day. This can help your body remove sluggish waste material quicker and easier.

Cabbage

Cabbage is packed with fiber and can trigger your digestive system to become more active. It also helps your liver get rid of toxins.

Garlic

Garlic helps the liver flush away toxins and in turn, boosts the immune system. H

Do High Heels Damage Your Feet? With the festive season upon us, many of us will be squeezing our feet into bejeweled, beautiful stilettos, only to limp in pain at the end of the evening. HEALTH speaks to an expert about how we can wear our heels and still maintain healthy feet.

Nov/Dec 2017

30

ONE SIZE DOES NOT FIT ALL

According to chief podiatrist Michelle Champlin, all women have a different maximum heel height that is comfortable for them. The front and back of the ankle determines the maximum angle the foot will fit into a highheeled shoe and be able to walk comfortably. Also, the length of the foot determines the height of the heel that can be worn to comfortable limits.

WHY IT HURTS

Wearing a high-heeled shoe moves the forefoot fatty padding to behind your toes instead of under the ball of your foot where it rests naturally in a flat shoe or barefoot. That is why the ball of the foot aches so much when wearing high-heels. Also, the weight of the lady wearing a high heeled shoe is a significant factor. The heavier you are, the more impact on the forefoot.

The Impact

It is much easier to sprain an ankle when wearing high-heeled shoes. The ligaments at the sides of ankle relax immediately in high-heeled shoes. If the ankle wobbles to the side, it actually leans a great amount before the ankle ligaments start to engage. By that time the ankle is past its critical point of self-correcting, the ankle may sprain or break.

AN EXPERT’S TIPS TO HELP PROTECT YOUR FEET WHEN YOU ARE WEARING HIGH-HEELS • Use a shoe with an orthotic and a transverse arch

lift on the other days. This is to counter-act the effects of the high-heeled shoes on the ball of the foot and keeps the essential fibro-fatty pad in place.

• Try the ‘Beauty and the Bunion’ foot tape to help

keep your big toe straight and the forefoot tight so as to reduce the impact on the forefoot bones and reduce bunion formation.

• Try wearing “Bunny Pads” on the ball of your

foot and on your small toes to protect them so that the skin on the feet look perfect. H

Understanding the Pain in Your Stomach

Here are four health problems related to your stomach and how to best treat them.

Nov/Dec 2017

32

1 Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Symptoms: Cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhea, and constipation. For many people with IBS, the stomach is happiest when it is empty. Triggers: Gas or pressure in your intestine triggered by certain foods, medication, or emotions. Foods such as chocolate may cause constipation or diarrhea, while carbonated beverages and certain fruits/vegetables can lead to bloating and discomfort. Treating It: To identify food triggers of IBS, trial and error works best, so keep a daily food diary to narrow down the culprits. And probiotics (good bacteria), found in yogurt and dairy products, can decrease the symptoms.

2

3

Heartburn

Constipation

Symptoms: Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) occurs when acid from the stomach backs up into the esophagus.

Symptoms: Generally chronic constipation is a stool frequency of less than three bowel movements per week that lasts several months.

Triggers: Frequent heartburn, the most common symptom of GERD, is the result of gastric acid backing up into the esophagus. If the lower esophageal sphincter does not close properly, gastric acids can seep back up into the esophagus causing heartburn. Treating It: The most common culprits include: citrus fruits, garlic/onion, spicy foods, caffeinated beverages, chocolate, and cocoa. Other tips include smoking cessation, keep your head elevated 45 degrees while sleeping, and don’t lie down directly after consuming a meal.

Triggers: One main cause is poor diet - one that focuses on processed foods, sugar, and lacks in fresh vegetables that are good sources of fiber. Other common causes include laxative abuse, hypothyroidism, IBS, and even ignoring the urge to go. Treating It: The best foods for constipation are the ones rich in insoluble fibers, such as whole grains, corn, oat bran, nuts, flaxseeds, brown rice, peanuts, and fruits/vegetables with edible skin. Moreover, proper hydration is very necessary for normal bowel movement.

4 Gastroenteritis Symptoms: This is irritation and inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. Common symptoms include low-grade fever, nausea, and vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea, painful cramps or bloating, headaches, and weakness. Triggers: Viruses, particularly rotavirus, and the bacteria Escherichia Coli and Campylobacter species are the primary causes of gastroenteritis. Treating It: Treatment, according to experts, is focused on rehydrating, replacing the fluids, electrolytes, water, and salts lost in the stool and vomit. H

Najla Al Midfa on Empowering Emirati Youth Harnessing the talents and entrepreneurial spirit of Emirati youth, Najla Al Midfa, General Manager of Sheraa-- Sharjah Entrepreneurship Centre--speaks to HEALTH about her organization Khayarat and how college graduates can reach their highest potential.

CREATING KHAYARAT

“My experience in the private sector helped me gain a better understanding of the skills required to succeed within it, and gave me a better sense of the expectations of private sector employers when hiring young talent. On the other hand, my

Nov/Dec 2017

34

experience at Khalifa Fund provided me with the opportunity to interact with young Emiratis. It was through these interactions that I was able to better understand their dreams and ambitions, the expectations of Emirati graduates, and the areas in which they needed career

support. Armed with this information, I was able to bridge the two sides through Khayarat.”

REASONS FOR KHAYARAT

“It was during my time at the Khalifa Fund for Enterprise and Development that I realized how much I enjoy helping individu-

als fulfill their potential. As I was mentoring these young, passionate Emiratis, I noted that they were not aware of the opportunities available to them in the private sector. This insight planted the seed for Khayarat (Arabic for 'Options'), which has inspired over 100 young Emirati graduates to raise their ambitions and understand their career options, and has enabled them to jumpstart their careers with leading employers in the private sector.”

MORE THAN MENTORING

“Mentoring is just one piece of the Khayarat offering. We think of ourselves as the student’s partner as they transition from college to career. We are with them every step of the way, helping them explore their passions, build the relevant skillsets, and empowering them to find jobs that they love and find fulfilling.”

EMIRATI WOMEN EMPOWERMENT

“I applaud the massive strides Emirati women are making towards fulfilling their own potential, as well as the efforts of the government to support them. It is especially awe-inspiring to see the empowerment of the younger generation. They grow up believing they can achieve anything, and so they do. I look forward to seeing how our country will progress under their influence.”

TAKING CARE OF HEALTH

“Sacrificing one’s health in service of a cause is a common trap that social change activists fall into, and I am keenly aware of the self-care required to avoid burnout. As such, I am disciplined about fitness, especially boxing. I’m also an avid climber, and have climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and Mount Toubkal in Morocco. I’ve also trekked through Bhutan and Mount Everest Base Camp.”

ADVICE FOR COLLEGE GRADUATES

“One thing I have noticed about most college graduates is that while they may possess the ‘hard’ skills in their field, their ‘soft’ skills are often lacking. Three vital skills every graduate should develop are confidence, adaptability, and communication. Also, being confident does not mean being arrogant or overlyaggressive, but rather that you know your strengths and believe in your abilities. You must also have the flexibility to work tasks that may not directly relate to your degree, and – paradoxically enough - get comfortable with being outside your comfort zone. Finally, you must be able to communicate these and your other qualities to your employer. You could be the perfect candidate, but if you do not know how to speak to your strengths, or to communicate with your employer on a regular day-to-day basis, then they will never know it.” H

Going the Extra Mile‌ Is Workaholism Necessary For Success? To be successful in a career takes much more than punching in and out. But for a workaholic, work is more than a source of income, rather it is a lifestyle. HEALTH takes a look at why workaholism can be so detrimental, both physically and mentally.

Nov/Dec 2017

38

More than Money

Recent cases of deaths resulting from ‘karoshi’ (overworking) in Japan has once again brought the dangers of workaholism in the limelight. Basically workaholics spend their entire being thinking, eating, sleeping and dreaming their work. Workaholics don’t put in all of their blood, sweat, and tears merely for money; more often it is the emotional, psychological, and physical adrenalin pumping thrill of challenge, surpassing deep rooted personal expectations.

Are You a Workaholic? Take our quiz • You prefer not taking a

vacation and even work weekends? • You prefer to only converse about work and are almost incapable of other topics? • Do you express a negative attitude towards sleep and leisure time? • Is stress a way of life? • Do you typically suffer from a lack of sleep, exercise, and inadequate nutrition?

Repeated Adversity More often than not, repeated adversity can ultimately trigger bouts of depression and/or stress. Some major life events that are very stressful include: death of a loved one; break up of a relationship; being fired from a job; sickness, or a physical injury. The way people deal with these life events depends on many factors, for instance, how adversity was handled in their own family, their relationship with a higher power, their support system, overall health, and their ability to manage stress.

Let’s face it; all of us go through hurdles in life. The difference is how each one of us deals and copes with these challenges and makes it a lesson to learn from in the future. Here’s help… Nov/Dec 2017

40

FIVE COPING TIPS 1

Take extra care of your health: Your

physical health is vital for dealing with any life stressor or adversity. Basic things such as food, sleep, and exercise are key in getting through these difficult times. 2

Remember nothing lasts: Not good times or

bad times. When the times are bad, stay strong and near to your loved ones. Remember, this time will pass.

3

Understanding difficult emotions:

Pain, anger, sadness, and sorrow have lessons to teach us if we sit through them. When we break open through heartache, we can actually expand as human beings, full of compassion, sensitivity, and understanding. Too often we self-medicate or distract ourselves, hoping to numb our pain, but it is only through processing our suffering that we can acquire wisdom.

4

Have a lifeboat: This can be a person who knows you and can give perspective when things seem too dark to bear. This can be a friend, a coach or a therapist—someone you trust to navigate the dark waters and who will help you find your way back home. 5

Positive thoughts: Life coach

Eleanor Chin points out that people who intentionally use their character strengths will find them readily available in times of need. She suggests focusing on one strength each day and incorporating it into daily activity. H

The Profile The typical people-pleaser is someone who lacks an internal compass to gauge the value of their own actions, explains Linda Tillman, a psychologist at Emory University. "As a result, they spend their lives looking for validation from others." People-pleasers expend so much energy meeting others' needs that they lose sight of what they want from life.

10 Ways to Break Out of the People-Pleasing Pattern 1. Recognize and admit that excessive people pleasing is a problem in your life. 2. Make a decision to start expressing your needs to everyone in your life in a clear manner. 3. Practice articulating your needs with someone who is non-threatening. 4. Understand that confrontation need not be a negative thing. Indeed, if handled well, a healthy confrontation can actually lead to better, more honest communication. 5. If you currently gravitate toward friends, bosses, and/ or partners who have controlling personalities, consider befriending people who do not possess these personality

traits. 6. Remind yourself that it is perfectly acceptable to disagree with other people. In fact, you will command greater respect from just about everyone you know as soon as you start expressing your honest, heartfelt feelings. 7. Disagreeable or negative feelings don't always have to be buried in a secret chamber. There is a way to express them in a thoughtful and considerate way. 8. You don't have to meet the demands and expectations of others if they are unreasonable, unrealistic, or unfair. 9. Do something to please you for a change. 10. Take charge of your life. As much as we hate to admit it, money makes a huge difference in the dynamic of a relationship; often times it can even be the root cause of a breakup—as HEALTH finds out.

Nov/Dec 2017

46

Tips to Coping with Money Issues in Your Relationship The Issue The fact is one of the most frequently cited reasons for a breakup is financial constraints. There are several issues surrounding money that couples fight about. For example, a couple may fight about how to spend money as to one person in the couple, security means having money in the bank, where to the other, it may mean a big house. The couple may also argue about whether they should invest or save.

• The ideal way to deal with money is to understand your

issues surrounding money and to communicate and understand your partner’s issues.

• It is also important to talk about financial issues; if you

cannot talk about them on your own, then talk about them in the company of a therapist or a financial planner.

• While talking about financial issues try not to play the

“blame game”, but instead try to come with a plan that meets both of your needs.

• When making a financial decision, it should not be based

on the person’s contribution to the family bank account—it should not matter who is making more money or if one of the partners is stay-at-home; instead, the couple should have equal say in the financial decisions. H

Facial Zones Forehead: Linked to the digestive system, but in some cases it can also be related to thyroid problems. Reducing the amount of fat in your diet and increasing your water intake could help. Chin and Jawline: It can be a sign of hormonal imbalance such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, but it can also be linked to stomach issues and even oral health as well. Sometimes too much fluoride can also cause break outs. Hairline: This could either be because of an allergic reaction to a product or merely because of overuse of a product. Hair products to smoothen frizz or get a wet look often end up being applied on the

skin over and over again, causing your pores to clog up. Nose: This is linked to the heart usually. Cutting back on spicy food and meat could reduce breakouts on the area. Around the Mouth (including upper lip area): Usually the result of unhealthy diet patterns. Acidic food (vinegar, dressings, and spices) can irritate the skin. Oily and fried food may also stay on the area and physically block pores. Controlling diet is a solution, but also using gentle facial wipes after having your meal. H

When women get pimples in adulthood, it’s usually a telltale sign of something going on in the body. Here’s what your acne on different areas of your face really means…

Advice Remember, great skin often starts from the inside – out. Skin is our biggest organ and works like a mirror; we must take care of it. Using gentle and natural products, eating healthy and drinking lots of water is the key. Physical exercise and sweating it all out is also very good to remove toxins and help the skin glow. ADD CALISTHENICS TO YOUR GYM ROUTINE Taking the concept of jumping jacks and pushups to the next level, HEALTH learns that calisthenics are fast gaining popularity as a fun and very effective way to help you stay fit and healthy.

Nov/Dec 2017

52

The Basics

Calisthenics are exercises made up of different kinds of movements such as pushing, running, and standing and usually done without any kind of equipment. Essentially a kind of body-weight training, calisthenics are used to help boost flexibility, core strength, and fitness by incorporating movements using only the individual’s body weight for resistance.

Benefits

According to Stephen Hughes Landers, creator of eight accredited calisthenics certifications and U.K. National freestyle champion 2014, everyone can benefit from calisthenics. He explains, “The beauty

of calisthenics is we are our equipment. Imagination is our only limitation. Nothing is needed for a full body workout. A pull up bar or dip bars mean a new level and multiple bars mean another world of options.”

The Session

Pretty much everything we do is calisthenics. “Strength, balance, and mobility are all needed in human beings and calisthenics helps us with this tri factor,” he says. “A freestyle session consists of a big warm up, skill specific training, repeated combos, sets of basic tricks, and then finish off with basic reps.” H

FIVE TIPS TO HELP MEN GET MORE ACTIVE After a long day in the office and then a commute home in traffic, the last thing you want to do is go for a jog or to the gym for a cardio workout. But getting motivated is easier than you think with this guide.

Nov/Dec 2017

54

1 Have a goal: If you don’t know

where you’re going, how will you know when you get there? Be very specific: exactly how much body fat do you want to lose? Wanting to be a bit more toned doesn’t really mean anything, you can’t measure it and it won’t keep you going when things get tough...

2 Find an emotional reason to make changes: Everyone knows they

should be more active, but very few of us are active enough. If your current lifestyle could significantly shorten your life expectancy, then think of all the things you’d miss if you passed away too soon, such as watching your kids grow up.

4 Put your training times in your diary: We all have

commitments in work and life and we find time for them so make exercise a commitment and start working around it. Treat your workouts like a meeting with your boss; not something you can ignore.

5 Find something active you like doing and do that: If you enjoy an activity,

you are much more likely to continue doing it. H

(Credit: Chris Miller, Trainer)

3 Take responsibility for the position you’re in right now: There are very few

people who can honestly blame a medical condition for bad health. It’s a tough thing to do, but if you take ownership for getting yourself into this position, then you give yourself the power to change.

How She Stays Fit

Health Tips

“I exercise and also have a very balanced diet. I do one hour of exercise daily, usually Pilates. But in case I am not able to make it to Pilates, I usually use bands which are usable anywhere.”

“Firstly, stay hydrated whenever and wherever possible. Drink as much water as you can, drink fresh juices, eat fresh fruits, and vegetables. I also do 12 hours daily of intermittent fasting, which is right after dinner straight to breakfast. This gives the body a break from digestion and something I advise everyone to try.”

Balance with Food “In terms of diet, I eat lots of fresh fruit, vegetables, and wherever possible, I eat gluten-free, dairyfree, and refined/ sugar-free. Having said this, we are only human and we all have our off days; so it’s only when I feel a little bit of a slump that I want to eat something comforting. On these days I allow myself a treat. I don’t think we are meant to be like robots. Discipline is one thing, but that also requires some healthy balance. So yes, there are days where I may eat pancakes for breakfast or indulge in pizza with friends. I actually believe you can stay healthy, and fit and maintain a really good weight having these occasional treats. It all boils down to balance and your awareness.”

Chill Out “A day off for me is usually

about pottering around the house. Just not having to get ready or wear makeup, having friends over, and doing a bit of cooking.”

What Wellness Means “Wellness means something different to everyone. But to me, it means peace of mind. Everything starts there. I think fitness and wellness are important, but this starts first with a peaceful mind. People should include some kind of meditation to help attain a peace of mind.” H

During the festive season, many of us are nervously dieting, counting carbs, and maybe even starving. Why not break free from the dieting prison and do what researchers have been telling us for years; use your mind to improve your waist-line and overall body health.

Nov/Dec 2017

58

How to Do it Program Your Mind It sounds great, but is there solid scientific evidence that our minds can help? Tom Venuto, author of the Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle, details that scientists have even identified specific parts of the brain, such as the reticular activating system (RAS). “The RAS is activated by ‘programming’ goals into our sub-conscious minds,” he says, and our sub-conscious mind is the ‘power center’ and this is the mechanism that explains why goal setting and positive thinking are now being accepted as scientific methods for change.

• Constantly visualize your-

self fitting into that dress, use self-affirming dialogue to make yourself believe that you truly are getting thin, you are above food and your cravings, and it’s not bad to eat a piece of cake.

• It’s you who has the power

to control your weight. What really happens is positive thinking and related methods quite literally re-program your brain, which in turn creates new behaviors that move you physically toward whatever you have been thinking about and focusing on.

• Become aware of under-

mining thoughts so you can replace them with helpful ones.

Dealing with Hunger Pangs • Hunger is normal and once you learn to tolerate craving and

separate it from true hunger, you’ll be free from being a slave to it.

• Plan what you’re going to eat the next day, and follow your plan to

the tee. This sounds rigid, but you’re building self-control.

• You can begin the positive mental reprogramming process by

writing down your goals, changing your internal dialogue, and taking a few minutes to relax, quiet your mind, and perform a session of visualization every day.

• If repeated, these methods will begin to program the non-conscious

portion of the mind, which is the same part of the mind that controls your heart beat, digestion, and new cell production. H

INTERPRETING HISTORICAL PERIODS WITH ART… A ONE ON ONE WITH HER HIGHNESS SHEIKHA HIND BINT MAJED AL QASSIMI Collaborating with BD Barcelona Design for their International creative exhibition, PostCraft, commissioned by The Odd Piece, Sheikha Hind’s ‘Is-Dher’ is a collection of vases that are her interpretation of the three historical periods- pre, during and post-oil era, that have underlined the Middle East. A UAE-based entrepreneur, Sheikha Hind is also the founder of ‘Designed by Hind’, which creates collections of bespoke crockery that has gone on to become a leading brand of porcelain in the region.

THE CONCEPT

“Through my designs for Is-Dher vases, I sought to embody three important historical periods that identified the features of the Middle East before, during and post oil eras. The vases reflect features of each era and their impact on the other. It’s in the transitional characteristics and distinctive textures of every vase where each era is reflected.”

DETAILS

“The vase, which is designed using raw and terracotta pottery, symbolizes the period before oil was discovered. The vase decorated with golden paper embodies the discovery of oil period, where prosperity and wealth pervaded the country. The post-oil era is

reflected by the vase designed with shiny metal, which embodies technology and sustainability. It retells a story of the eras past and present. Each piece of work has journeyed through time, and has a story to tell.”

Sometimes women can be their own worst enemy as we unfairly compare ourselves to other women who we perceive as being prettier, smarter, and thinner. HEALTH learns that negative body image is one of the worst things a woman can do to herself.

When Sue, a size 14, wanted to get in shape, she joined her local gym. “I was looking forward to my aerobics class and even decided to eat healthy foods to accelerate weight loss. But from my third day going, a slender woman joined our class. At first, I ignored her- but between watching her and seeing myself, I quit the class…” Every woman has suffered this at some point- being in a party looking really good when all of a sudden a gorgeous woman strides in. Suddenly you feel fat.

What it Means Body envy is based on a negative ‘body image’ and a lack of self-esteem. These women usually have rigid predetermined ideals about how a normal, proper, or beautiful body should be combined with society’s obsessive

preoccupation with weight. Society portrays having a so-called perfect body as the key—to landing a dream job, to having good health, and to having popularity and success.

Problems Body envy can become problematic when it limits your life. You stop going to the gym and dread being seen in fitting workout wear near skinnier women. Constantly comparing your body with how other women look can lead to a distorted perception of your shape and size.

More Critical All research to date on body image shows that women are much more critical of their appearance

than men and are much less likely to admire what they see in the mirror. Women talk endlessly about how we don’t like our bodies, about how we wish we could only lose a few kilos; we chatter ceaselessly about fat, carbs, and BMIs over lunch, and over coffee.

A Guide to Banishing Body Envy • Develop criteria for self-

esteem that go beyond appearance. One way to make appearance less important is to develop other benchmarks for self-evaluation such as the intellectual, emotional, spiritual, and social aspects.

• Seek out friends who have

healthy body and self-images.

• Exercise for fun, strength,

fitness, and health, not just weight control.

• Eat to nourish your body and

listen to its signals for when to eat and when to stop. H

WITH TWO LIVE TELEVISION PROGRAMS ON MBC AND THE BRAND AMBASSADOR FOR L’ORÉAL IN THE MIDDLE EAST, HEALTH MET WITH OLA AL FARES AT THE RECENT HEALTH AWARDS PRESS CONFERENCE 2018 IN DUBAI WHERE SHE REVEALED HER PERSONAL HEALTH TIPS.

BUSY LIFESTYLE

“I think these days, especially in Dubai, we all lead very busy lifestyles; so we need to always remember to drink a lot of water and take good care of our health. It’s not how much we eat, but it’s what we eat, this is what I believe. So if you are clean from within, this will reflect on your face.”

SLEEP

“To have good health, you need to sleep well. I used to sleep early and wake up early, but because of my hectic lifestyle and constant

travelling, I sometimes have to sleep on the plane which I know is not good for my health. So now I make an effort on weekends to sleep well and always strive to create a balance between work and my health.”

CLEAN FROM WITHIN

“I believe water is essential; we need to drink a lot of it to cleanse our system from within and our soul also. Then I do meditation and yoga, once a week, plus I work out. I have also started boxing which gives great energy and also a great physique.”

FOOD

“I like healthy fats such as avocado; I eat one every morning. Also, I make it a point to eat a green apple daily also because as they say, ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away.’ In addition to water, I also make sure to drink a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice daily. This is because it has a lot of vitamin C which is an essential ingredient in all of the skin creams. Vitamin C always makes us look fresh, young, and healthy. It’s also excellent for the immune system.”

RELAX

“I enjoy having massage done. Also, when I have a weekend, I visit a skin clinic just to treat myself to a facial. In fact, sometimes I feel guilty that I am not spending enough time on myself. I am doing these things for the past year and feel quite good about it.”

CHECKUPS

“I have friends who happen to be doctors and I make it a habit to undergo routine health checkups. I feel this is very important for everyone as life today is quite stressful with so many lifestyle diseases out there.”

KEY ANTI-AGING TIP

“It’s definitely the happiness from within that shines through. I believe that beauty comes from within. I am like everyone else; I have my problems, but I give thanks daily because it is these problems that make us stronger. Sometimes we have these problems just to feel happiness. This is what I believe.” H

CURBING CARBS

“I have also cut back on sugar and carbs and only have bread or rice a maximum of once or twice a week. I am also trying now to eat more fish, chicken breast, and lean meats which help me stay slender.”

BALANCE

“After I became the L’Oreal brand ambassador in the Middle East and North Africa, I don’t have a whole lot of time for myself as I have my two television programs also on MBC. So between this and my responsibilities about the titles, it’s not easy, but I am trying to find the right balance.”

The New-Age Addiction in Kids… Social Media

Nov/Dec 2017

68

Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, and so many others… these days, our kids are hooked to social media. Here are some expert tips to help… 1

Admit it is an issue:

People have to realize that social media has the potential to be a neurobiological and psychological addiction. For kids who deny or dismiss that they have a problem with their social media use, ask them to try and stop using it for one week and see how they feel. Many people have reported having full-blown symptoms of depression and anxiety as a result of no access to social media.

2

Schedule a time where you / kids will use social media: Instead of having it to

scattered throughout the day, and as a part of every moment, instead set aside scheduled times in the day/week where you upload pictures or share information.

3

Have social media free days: Start with a few hours

and eventually aim to have whole days where you/kids enjoy the moment without having to capture it or share it.

4

Take a mental snap shot:

Instead of sharing it with your social world, try to absorb the moment, connect with your feeling, experience the moment

with all your five senses, and take a mental snap shot. The irony of social media is that in wanting to capture and share our life with others, we have lost the moment and with it, it's memory.

5

Have contracts: It is important that kids not be allowed to start using a smart phone or social media without having a thorough conversation about the rules and responsibilities associated with these privileges. There are great contract templates available online on the American Pediatric Association website.

6

Involve them in other activities: Don’t take something

away from them without putting something in its place. Having kids involved in activities such as sports, clubs, and family time will keep their minds engaged and their lives interesting, and not as focused on the virtual world.

Final Advice: According

to Dr. Saliha Afridi, clinical psychologist, social media needs to be used wisely. She elaborates, “Social media is not the 'bad guy' here- it is our misuse and abuse of it that is resulting in a deterioration of relationship bonds.” H

HOW A COCHLEAR IMPLANT WORKS Birds chirping, the phone ringing, a song on the radio-these are all familiar sounds for most of us. Imagine not having heard these sounds and suddenly being able to hear them? Or to have lost your hearing and to be able to regain it back? It is possible with a cochlear implant‌

Nov/Dec 2017

70

What it is A cochlear implant is a small, complex electronic device that can help provide a sense of sound to a profoundly deaf or severely hard of hearing person. Implanted surgically under the ear, it has four basic parts: A microphone that picks up sound from the environment, a speech processor which selects and arranges sounds picked up by the microphone, a transmitter and receiver/stimuli which receive signals from the speech processor and convert them into electric impulses, and electrodes which collect the impulses from the stimulator and send them to the brain. A cochlear implant does not restore or create normal hearing, but instead, under appropriate conditions, can give a deaf person useful auditory understanding of the environment and help him or her to understand speech.

How it works A cochlear implant includes an internal and external component. The internal component is surgically inserted under the skin behind the ear, and a narrow wire is threaded into the inner ear. The external component is connected to the internal one through the skin through an external magnetic disk.

Different from a Hearing Aid A cochlear implant is quite different from a hearing aid which is used to simply amplify sound. An implant rather compensates for damaged or non-working parts of the inner ear. In normal hearing, complicated parts of the inner

ear convert sound waves in the air into electrical impulses. These impulses are sent to the brain where a person who can hear, will hear recognize them as a sound.

Who Benefits Adults, especially who have lost their hearing later in life, can benefit from cochlear implants as they often associate the sounds made through an implant with the sounds they may remember. They often recognize sound without visual cues or systems such as lip reading or sign language. Young children are also candidates for implants; which coupled with intensive postimplantation therapy, can help young children acquire speech, language, developmental, and social skills. Though the best age is still debated for implantation, most children receiving implants are between the ages of two and six years old.

Factors Taken into Consideration that Contribute to the Success of a Cochlear Implant Include: • How long a person has been deaf? • The number of surviving auditory nerve fibers. • A patient’s motivation to hear. (Credit: www.hearingloss.org)

INVESTING IN WATCHES…

IS IT WORTH IT? Many of us don’t really consider our watches as investment, but the fact is that some watch brands increase in value over time. HEALTH explains more.

Nov/Dec 2017

72

Gold Standard Essentially, features such as history, brand perception, availability, and individuality as well as demand, are paramount when it comes to a watch’s increasing value over a span of time. Of all of the luxury brands out there, Patek Philippe and Rolex are the safest luxury brands in terms of investment. Boasting an influential list of celebrities and VIPs that wear and have worn iconic Rolex watches, this is a brand that is always in demand by watch aficionados, has a high demand, and of course, a very strong history. These factors, combined with the fact that Rolex watches are easily available, make most Rolex watches increase in value over time. This also applies to an even more luxurious brand-Patek Philippe-though because of its hefty price tag, is less accessible. Nonetheless, this is a brand whose niche is exclusivity and this adds value.

Other Luxury Brands Besides Rolex and Patek Philippe, luxury watch brands with a high demand, such as Omega, Cartier, IWC, Breitling, Audemars Piguet, and JaegerLeCoultre and Cartier, may also grow in value over time, but this depends on which certain models from these brands are highest in demand. According to experts, the watches that are closest to the first model at the time it was launched, and those that are as pure as possible, are most likely going to maintain their value or even increase in value. So ultimately, it really is a matter of purchasing watches at the right time for the right price. H

SMOKING SIDE EFFECTS

Question: I am a 45-year old male and I smoke a pack of cigarettes daily. Lately after I eat, my stomach burns and I feel nauseated. Is there a link between smoking and this problem? Dr. Mohamed Ahmed Nabil Elshobary, specialist of internal medicine responds, “Yes, there is strong link between smoking and Reflux Esophagitis as nicotine decreases the lower esophageal pressure, facilitating the gastric acid to reflux to the esophagus, which is not prepared for this acid secretion.”

OVARIAN CYST IN TEENAGER

Question: My 17 year old girl was diagnosed with having one ovarian cyst of about 4 centimeters. Is this dangerous and what is the treatment for this? Dr.Preeti Tandon, specialist gynecologist responds, “Most ovarian cysts in this age are managed conservatively, with only a few exceptions requiring surgery. The degree of concern depends on the nature of the cyst, which can be ascertained through pelvic ultrasound. A 4 centimers cyst if functional in nature and the young girl is not having any symptoms can be observed and it will most likely disappear slowly.”

SAFETY OF ACCUTANE

Question: My 16-year-old daughter has been suffering from acne for the past two years. How safe is Accutane for her? Dr. Hanieh Erdmann, specialist dermatologist responds, “Accutane (medical term Isotretinoin), used for acne, is derived from vitamin A and is definitely not suitable for everyone. Even if people have had acne for many years, it doesn’t mean that they need to be on Accutane. Sometimes it means they haven’t found what works for them yet, the diet, skin care and so on. As acne has different stages, if the acne is moderate to severe and the patient does not respond to conservative, topical treatment and is experiencing scarring because of acne, Accutane could be a good solution. But the patient needs to be monitored by a dermatologist, with monthly blood tests and should avoid sun exposure as much as possible. The treatment goes on up to 6 months and in some cases, even eight months to get the best results. As your daughter is a 16-year-old girl, it should be fine. But it is crucial that women of child bearing age are NOT pregnant and do NOT get pregnant while taking the medicine.”

Benefits

Specific Plants

Jean-Charles Hameau, managing director at My Green Chapter explains that one of the key benefits of having plants indoors is that they can purify the air. He elaborates, “Indoor plants are remarkably efficient in absorbing low levels of toxins such as benzene and formaldehyde, which may be present in our homes or offices. Mold spores and bacteria also appear less in rooms with air purifying plants. They help you increase the humidity and moisture in the air, which decreases the chance of getting dry skin, a dry cough, colds, and flu.”

Some plants are better than others at purifying the air, and removing toxins in the room, tells Hameau, among these are Aloe Vera, Hedera Helix (Ivy), Spider Plant, Snake Plant, and Peace Lily.

Mind, Body, Happiness‌ Boost Your Wellbeing with Meditation Nov/Dec 2017

78

These days, the pressure to perform at work is at an all-time high. Add to this the never ending emails and messages that make it almost impossible to switch off. Here are three ways that meditation can boost your wellbeing and help you disconnect.

What Happens It seems quite simple, but how does doing something so simple have such a powerful impact on the body and brain? According to researchers at Yale University, meditation decreases activity in the brain’s default mode network. This area is active during times of worries, regrets, and repeated thoughts.

1 Soothe the Body: One way to curb

headaches, blood pressure, and tension is to soothe the mind, which will, in turn, relax the body. Over time, meditation has been shown to help with other physical problems such as digestion, chronic pain, and even diabetes.

3 Realize Happiness:

Decision making improves and confidence levels increase. In fact, research has shown that positive emotions are enhanced as the brain signaling increases in the left side of the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for feel-good emotions while the side of the brain responsible for negative emotions in the right side decreases.

2 Balance the Mind: Once you have mastered meditation, clarity and focus become easier. Your thoughts will be more focused, it will be easier to organize your time, and it will even help you relax and sleep better.

YIN AND YANG ENERGY “I try and keep things balanced. Where there is yin, there must be yang, and vice versa – this isn’t just a philosophy, it’s also about energy. This means listening to, and then learning how to understand your body – we are all different, and need different things. Train hard, but give it rest. Eat well, but don’t always deny yourself the things you love nor go overboard with treats. A healthy mind is just as important as a healthy body. The power of social media can be harnessed to accomplish amazing things – it can inspire people in so many ways, be that in terms of fitness, reaching life goals, or trying new adventures. However, not everyone uses it in a responsible or positive way. Give Your Home a New Look with These Style Tips

All over marble work is outdated. Incorporate the marble texture in minimal, for instance, add a small, round coffee table for a touch of sophistication. An alternative choice for marble that is high on trend this season is earthier materials, such as wood, clay, and metal with worn finishes.

Ditch all-white interiors. Instead, embrace warmer, richer shades of brown, black, deep greens, and subtle pinks. These cozy shades are perfect for the fall and winter. Complement the bold shades with natural wood and leather, accented with brass and cream.

All Velvet. The fabric feels luxurious and welcoming for fall and winter, and when combined with rough natural textures (think reclaimed wood and woven baskets) and smooth metals and ceramics, adds a visual interest and tactile coziness to a room.

For accessories, think rose gold and copper. Your real copper fixtures will always be in style, but this year, remember, brass is the new copper, especially when incorporated into furniture in an overt way.

Go Au Naturel. Woven textiles, baskets, woven pedant lamps, and clay are perfect picks for the upcoming season. (Credit: Erna Vasilchenko, Interior Designer at IDdesign Dubai)

The Sneaky Sugars Lurking in Your Child's Diet The sugar debate is never ending, but one sure fact is that our children are getting fatter and juvenile diabetes is on the rise. Could sugar be one of the leading culprits in this equation? HEALTH investigates.

Nov/Dec 2017

86

The following are simply sugar as labeled on food items • Barley malt • Brown sugar • Corn syrup and corn sweetener • Fruit juice concentrate • Evaporated/crystallized cane juice • Dextrose or glucose, fructose, high fructose corn syrup • Honey • Invert sugar, lactose, and maltose • Molasses or raw sugar • Sucrose and syrups such as maple, and sorbitol and xylitol

WHO recommends only five percent of the total daily calories in our diets come from sugar. Use our guide to keep sugar intake under control:

Don’t Reward With Sweets

Don’t Forbid Sugar Completely

Some parents forbid sweets, however, forbidding sweets completely may increase a child’s fascination with them and cause candy binges.

Even if the juice box says one hundred percent juice, or no sugar added, this doesn’t make it healthy. The reality is a usual juice pouch has about 22 grams of sugar. Offer water with sliced fruits instead.

Limit the Amount of Sweets Your Child Eats

Be Cautious About Healthy Alternatives

Do not tell your children they will get candy if they finish their homework. Rewards are great incentives, but avoid using food as the treat.

Cut Out the Juice

While one candy bar is fine, eating an entire bag of candy is unacceptable. You can best do this by setting a good example. Make exceptions and allow extra candy on holidays and birthdays.

Start flavoring with cinnamon, nutmeg, and pure vanilla instead of sugary syrups for French toast, breads, or pancakes.

Swap Sugar

Make it a habit to eat healthy as a family. Skip sugary desserts and instead, always offer fresh, seasonal fruits.

Instead of ice cream, freeze plain Greek yogurt and add fresh fruit or use fruit puree instead of sugar when baking.

Improve Your Child’s Behavior with Food Is your child unable to sit still, hyperactive, or fidgety? While some of it may have to do with environment, much of it may be related to diet. HEALTH reveals the link between behavior and food and which foods to feed your child for improved behavior.

Nov/Dec 2017

88

4

Ways to Improve Your Child’s Behavior with Food 1 Keep a food diary for a week, noting

everything that is eaten – including at school. At the end of the week, you should have a better idea of your child’s exposure to food additives which can help curb these foods.

Good for the Brain Foods According to health and nutrition expert Patrick Holford, the brain is 60 percent fat, therefore, children who eat good fats--from raw nuts, seeds, and oily fish--double their chances of high academic performance. Children who eat damaged fats--in fried food and takeaways--are reportedly often badly behaved and also, perform badly at school.

2 Eating a balanced diet of fresh

produce and whole grain foods will help towards keeping additives out of your child’s system. Organic packaged foods have little or no added synthetic colors or preservatives. 3 The best foods for good academic performance are dark green leafy vegetables, raw nuts/seeds, and oily fish. 4 Read labels. Particularly keep an eye

out for the following:

The Culprits

• Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT) • Sodium Nitrate/Nitrate • Sulfites • Potassium Bromate • FD&C Blue No. 1 and FD&C Blue No. 2 • FD&C Green No. 3 • FD&C Red No. 3 (Erythrosine) • FD&C Yellow No. 5 (Tartrazine) and FD&C Yellow No. 6 • Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) (Credit: www.healthychild.org)

Many studies associate sugar consumption with symptoms of restlessness and inattention. If you want your child to be able to concentrate better, limit their sugar intake. In particular, you have to limit their intake of processed and refined sugar.
