FOREWORD East’s first ‘UAE 100 ranking’, recognizing companies that have played a key role in making the country the thriving business center that it is today. Thumbay Group ranks 29 in the list.

Wish you all a very happy New Year. Hope this year brings with it happiness, prosperity, and good health to all our readers. HEALTH magazine enters into its 20th year and I would like to personally thank our patrons, readers, corporates, and individuals who have been consistently supporting this magazine over the last 20 years. They have played an important role in making it the Number 1 magazine in the region. His Highness Sheikh Humaid Bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Member of the Supreme Council, UAE and Ruler of Ajman awarded 177 degrees at the 15th Convocation Ceremony of Gulf Medical University held at the Emirates Hospitality Centre, Al Jurf, Ajman. Congratulating the graduates on their achievement, H.H. Sheikh Humaid Bin Rashid Al Nuaimi urged them to continue their specialized studies and excel in their careers, and advised them to utilize the knowledge to help the society and the nation. Addressing the Emirati graduates, His Highness said that they are a source of honor to the country. Celebration of the 20th anniversary of Gulf Medical University marked the honoring of 13 outstanding achievers from among the alumni in recognition of their accomplishments, during the GMU Annual Global Alumni Summit that was organized by the university. It was a delight to meet our alumni, who have established themselves as leaders in various specialties across the globe. We are proud to have many ambassadors for our university, who have established as role models to the present as well as aspiring students who wish to enter the portals of our university. There cannot be a better beginning to a new year than being rated as one of the ‘Top 50 private companies in the UAE’ by Forbes Middle East. The list is part of Forbes Middle

I am personally happy that this recognition comes at a time when Thumbay Group has embarked upon a new phase of growth and global expansion, aiming to increase the size of our businesses at least 10 times, strengthening our global presence, and expanding the employee strength to 25,000, by 2023, according to our strategic plans. 2018 also marked the 20th year of Thumbay Group’s success, growing from a single company to a diversified international conglomerate with business activities across 20 sectors. I would like to thank the Rulers and the leadership of this country, the Government and various authorities, our stakeholders, partners in progress, and our team, who relentlessly worked hard to ensure the success and growth of our group. Successfully traversing this territory over the last 20 years has allowed us to realize our institution’s true potential as an intellectual leader. As I see it, Gulf Medical University will not only anticipate, but also create new developments on three frontiers -medicine, healthcare, and research. Known to be trendsetters in healthcare education and healthcare over the last 20 years, the university has launched yet another unique, specialized College of Healthcare Management and Economics. Its main goal is to prepare the graduates to pursue careers in healthcare management, health economics, policy-making, and administration in the region and globally. The new college will admit students from the spring semester 2019 and will offer two programs - a four year Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Management and Economics (BSc. HME) and a one year Executive Master in Healthcare Management and Economics (EMHME). A Closer Look at Foodborne Illnesses Despite today’s state-of-the-art methods developed to prevent foodborne illnesses, there still is a problem. Dr. Ruth Petran, Vice President Food Safety and Public Health at Ecolab reveals that knowing which foodborne pathogens are causing the biggest problems in which parts of the world can lead to the development of the most appropriate targeted actions by the public, governments, and the food industry.

Dr. Ruth Petran

Vice President Food Safety and Public Health at Ecolab

What are some of the key reasons for today’s food borne illnesses in the developed world? Some of this is simply due to poor attention to

Jan/Feb 2019

10

the behaviors that are fundamental. We know that top contributing factors to foodborne illness are the basics including - poor personal hygiene—washing

hands, staying home when ill; improper holding temperatures—foods in the danger zone of 4 to 60 Celsius for too long; contamination from the environment or

equipment; inadequate cooking; and unsafe sources of foods. And it’s against these key factors where most violations by health and regulatory officials are reported. We also have more sensitive technologies that enable better detection of concerns – this is great from a public health standpoint since we can take actions against risks before they become magnified further, affecting more people. But it may cause some to believe that generally there are higher risks today. I don’t think that’s necessarily the case; it’s just that we have a bigger magnifying glass to find them.

Which foodborne illnesses are the most common these days?

Global surveillance data from the World Health Organization published in 2015* indicate that among the top global foodborne illnesses

is norovirus, which is easily spread from contaminated food or water, but also from person-to-person or even from unclean surfaces. It causes vomiting and diarrhea, which typically clears up in a couple of days, but in sensitive populations it can be more serious, and it is among the top cause of deaths linked to foodborne illnesses. It can affect groups of people who are gathered together given its easy transmissibility – this could be folks in a long-term care facility, at a wedding banquet, or on a cruise ship. It always originates in an ill person, which is why it’s so important that people who are suffering from vomiting and diarrhea should never handle foods. We suspect that norovirus has been around for a long time, but it was not formally identified until 1968, and even in the ensuing years, it’s likely that illness estimates were low. Now

with more sensitive detection technologies, we likely have a more accurate picture of the true burden of illnesses attributed to norovirus. In large part, the controls rely on excluding ill workers from working with or handling food, but it also demands compliant hand washing and aggressive cleaning and disinfection using products that are demonstrated to be effective against norovirus.

What are the preventive measures we can take to prevent foodborne illnesses in the home?

At home, it’s really no different. I really like the World Health Organization’s Five Keys for Food Safety* that lays this all out so succinctly: keep clean, separate raw and cooked, cook thoroughly, keep food at safe temperatures, and use safe water and raw materials. Basically, it’s a matter of being aware of what the risks are and ensuring that they are properly managed. H

Can You Stall Aging with Hormones? Jan/Feb 2019

12

From eating healthier to exercising and even turning to expensive cosmetic treatments—as we age, most of us do whatever we can to slow down the process. Yet Dr. Hugo C. Verhoeven, a worldwiderecognized antiaging expert reveals that it is actually hormones that play a huge role in the anti-aging processes.

THE JAPANESE KNOW THE SECRET The classic example is Japanese men and women— why are they so thin? Why do they have minimal cellulite, such good skin, nail, and hair quality even as they age? Not because of higher testosterone, but because of lower estrogen—estrogen makes women fat. Women taking high concentrations of estrogens as hormone

FOUR ASPECTS OF AGING

According to Dr. Verhoeven, it is important to understand that anti-aging is not merely exercising, losing weight or Tai Chi. He explains, “There are four major aspects in the anti-aging treatment, each of them is extremely important. Number one is what we eat and especially when.” Aim to avoid fatty foods from animals with four legs and also, the gap between the last food intake of the day and going to sleep should be long enough so that the evening and night production of Human Growth Hormone can be used for anti-aging purposes, and not for digestion and fat production. The second important must, he adds, is to burn fat and increase blood content of the

replacement therapy will gain weight as estrogens stimulate fat cells, these will produce a hormone called aromatase that will convert male hormones into female hormones, resulting in more fat and again more production of aromatase. Asian women and men consume high amounts of phytoestrogens, especially soy. Phytoestrogens are aromatase-inhibitors, blocking the conversion of male hormones into female hormones, resulting in fewer estrogens in the blood and less fat production in the skin.

complete body by exercising. “The third is psychological balance achieved by prayer, meditation, Tai Chi, or another form of relaxation,” he explains, and finally, the fourth and extremely important part of antiaging therapy is achieving a hormonal balance. “If one of these four axes is missing, no anti-aging effect of all efforts will be obtained,” stresses Dr. Verhoeven. “If there is no hormonal balance, you can exercise as much as you want, you can reduce fat and relax all day, but you will age quick and early. Hormones not only affect how we feel, but also how we look. “For women, young and old, the main complaint we hear is: we are exercising, dieting, and eating correctly, we have been to the plastic surgeon, but nothing really works in the long term,” he notes.

The reason why Asian women and men are physically so different is not genetically, but only a question of food intake, especially soy. Japanese women in Japan have smaller breasts, less breast cancer, less endometrial cancer, are thin, and have great skin and hair. For the males, it is the same: less facial or body hair, better skin quality, less wrinkles, and less prostate cancer. H

DUBAI TRANSFORMS INTO AN INNOVATION HUB FOR PHARMACEUTICAL MANUFACTURING

Madhukar Tanna CEO of Pharmax Pharmaceuticals

Jan/Feb 2019

14

Historically, the UAE has relied upon the importation of medicines from the international market. However, with government support for local manufacturers, local companies now have a unique opportunity to produce locally-manufactured medications and treatments. Madhukar Tanna, CEO of newcomer Pharmax Pharmaceuticals explores the reasons behind the recent boom in the UAE’s pharmaceutical sector and how Dubai is becoming a hub for innovation in healthcare.

Government Initiatives

In 2014, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, launched Dubai Plan 2021 to reinforce the Emirate’s position as an international leader across a number of sectors. This followed the November 2014 announcement by the UAE government that 2015 would be the ‘Year of Innovation’, promoting the UAE as a global pioneer in innovation alongside the introduction of the ambitious National Innovation Strategy. June 2016 saw another strategic framework announced by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum with the launch of Dubai Industrial Strategy 2030, further driving Dubai to become a global platform for knowledge-based, sustainable, and innovationfocused businesses. Among the six priority sectors identified in the strategy are pharmaceuticals and medical equipment, due to their importance to Dubai Plan 2021 and future growth potential.

The Statistics

According to the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers Association Gulf Forum, the pharmaceutical market in the UAE is expected to grow from AED 9.61 billion in 2016 to AED14.11 billion by 2020, with key drivers including increased healthcare spend, mandatory health insurance, and growing medical tourism.

The Social Impact

Locally produced generic medications offer a more affordable option to patients’ and health insurance companies for a number of reasons. Firstly, although generic drugs are chemically equivalent to the branded alternatives, they are often less expensive as there are fewer costs incurred in creating

them, enabling generic manufacturers to maintain a profit while charging a lower price to consumers.

Help with Lifestyle Disease

Increased access to treatment, whether through health insurance or more affordable prices, will make it easier for patients' to obtain the medications they need. The International Diabetes Federation revealed that the prevalence of diabetes in the UAE is rising at a faster rate than the rest of the MENA region and the rest of the world. The number of people in the UAE suffering from diabetes is expected to double, reaching 2.2 million by 2040. However, with increased access to affordable generic medication, this condition can be managed. By offering affordable, locallyproduced medications, patients' will have greater access to treatment. TAKE YOUR ENERGY LEVELS TO GREATER HEIGHTS IN 2019

SHEREEN MITWALLI Certified Life Coach and Motivational Speaker

Jan/Feb 2019

16

ALL OF US WANT TO BE MORE PRODUCTIVE AND UNLOCK OUR MAXIMUM POTENTIAL. FUELED BY MOTIVATION AND COFFEE, IT SEEMS AS THOUGH NOTHING CAN GET IN THE WAY UNTIL YOU FIND YOURSELF FALLING ASLEEP DURING THE MIDDLE OF THE AFTERNOON. BUT CERTIFIED LIFE COACH AND MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER, SHEREEN MITWALLI MAINTAINS THAT IT IS POSSIBLE TO BE AS PRODUCTIVE AS YOU IMAGINE WITH HER TOP ENERGY MAXIMIZING TIPS FOR 2019.

DIET IS VITAL For chocolate fans, this isn’t a shortcut on how to get instant energy. The reality is there are no short cuts to any habits you want to modify or any results you want to achieve. You will have to make shifts to your diet to feel more energized. A good way to boost energy levels through the diet is to increase your intake of adaptogen herbs—natural substances that aid the body by regulating key hormones. Other advantages of adaptogen herbs include enhancing the immune system, stabilizing mood, as well as boosting physical endurance and mental focus. TACKLE STRESS According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, 80 percent of

all physician visits are due to stress-related problems. In fact, stress is one of the biggest reasons we are often depleted of energy— mentally and physically. When there is an overload of stress, the adrenal glands are forced to work in overdrive to maintain control of the situation. Try to manage your stress levels by including relaxation techniques such as meditation. Work on your excess caffeine intake, despite the fact it gives a morning kick, it’s just adding to your stress levels over time.

GET MOVING Exercising can actually boost your energy levels, particularly in the morning. A study conducted by the University of Georgia, those individuals who did a less

intense aerobic activity three times a week in the mornings demonstrated less fatigue than those who did higher-intensity workouts. Unfortunately, we as humans don’t just get energy; we have to create it ourselves; work on doing small activities to get moving which will help the tissues generate a form of energy.

FINAL WORDS Once you have implemented these tips in your life, staying alert during the day will be far easier to manage. Daily tasks will become more achievable and in the long run, these can help towards boosting your health also. H

THE RIGHT WAY TO REACH YOUR NEW YEAR'S

We all make lists of what we want to do and achieve for the new year, yet most of us never get to achieve these goals. Dr. Tara Wyne, Clinical Psychologist and Clinical Director unravels the process of creating resolutions you can actually achieve.

Jan/Feb 2019

18

WHY WE MAKE RESOLUTIONS

By nature, Dr. Wyne points out that we are thinking creatures and are constantly reimagining ourselves and consistently envisage a more perfect self. “Our ideas around perfection are informed by our experience, our context, friends, family, and media and content that we consume daily,” she says; so often we gather goals and aspirations that we see being good for others, and set these as our resolutions. Whilst these may be healthy goals, they aren’t always realistic or achievable and we haven’t always got the time, money, commitment, or energy that they take. So we set resolutions and because of a lack of true fit and practical achievability, we fail or it takes superhuman effort which isn’t sustainable to meet the goals.

DOING IT RIGHT

Firstly, Dr. Wyne asserts the reflection that generates the desire to change and making resolutions should be a regular part of our life. “We as people need to spend

more time understanding our inner life alongside our constant preoccupation with our external life and our perpetual busyness,” she explains. “When we spend ‘time in’ which is time where we have no task, but just sitting and being, we connect with ourselves and learn a great deal about who we are and what we think and feel about ourselves—a process which generates truer goals regarding change and improvement.” We have to be honest in our self-appraisal and then if we create goals for change, we need to actually allocate both time and energy to seeing the goals through. Dr. Wyne stresses that if you don’t schedule it, it won’t happen; adding, “Too often we mistakenly believe if we want it enough, we will just make it happen and we will feel like making change. Change happens when intention and behavior meet and there is regular (even modest) follow through on goals.”

TIPS FOR SELFEVALUATION AND SELFIMPROVEMENT

Have some daily reflection time. Set aside time to be mindful, meditate, or write a journal. Each of these activities allows us to stop and be. Look for recurrent themes to guide our efforts for change. Ask important people in your life for feedback on how you are and what they see might be needed for you to be your best you. Do a values exercise where you take an accurate and up to date look at what is most important to you. This builds great motivation, and awareness, and focus. If your lifestyle is aligned to authentic values, you are far more likely to be able to set realizable goals and achieve them. H

Can Skin Fasting Give You Flawless Skin? With the 10 and 12-step skincare regimes many of us are happily indulging during mornings and evenings, the Japanese are doing things a bit differently. Koko Hayashi, Founder & CEO at Mirai Clinical and Skin Fit Gym in Los Angeles, California reveals the Japanese way of skin fasting for optimal skin health. Jan/Feb 2019

20

IN STARK CONTRAST TO THE 10 AND 12-STEP PROGRAMS FOR GLOWING SKIN, WHAT IS THE JAPANESE METHOD OF A SKIN FAST?

before going to sleep. In the morning, you just splash water on the face, instead of face wash, so the skin’s natural oils stay on the skin.

Japanese skincare is ‘less is more’. The less products you use, the healthier your skin. Skin has the innate ability to rejuvenate itself, so skincare should be minimal to naturally support your skin’s own rejuvenation process, instead of adding lots of foreign objects.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Skin fasting is a popular practice to improve your skin’s own rejuvenation by skipping any skincare cream (or very minimum application on dry areas)

By applying nothing or very minimum, your skin tries to produce enough moisture and oils by itself from within. When you apply too many skincare products, the skin becomes too lazy to produce its own moisture and oils. You don’t want to eat fatty ice cream every day. It’s the same thing. We call overly nourished skin ‘Skin Obesity’.

shows your internal organ’s health condition, and you cannot easily fix problems by applying things on the outside. Even if you can, it’s a temporary effect. Face creams can help with some wrinkles or pigmentation, but those ingredients might be damaging the skin’s protective barrier to reach deeper. Breaking the protective barrier is obviously bad. Your skin becomes more susceptible and sensitive to external stressors, such as UV rays or allergic reactions to foreign objects.

IN CONTRAST TO SERUMS AND TONERS

This is against skincare regimens that use so many products. Skin

WHAT ARE THE RESULTS OF A SKIN FAST?

The skin becomes stronger, so you will need less skincare products. You can do it once a week or so, to start with. Then slowly increase the frequency to every few days. Some do it daily. It’s recommended to start in the rainy season or summer, so the skin slowly gets used to the situation. However, if you have severely dry areas on the face, you should always apply some moisturizer to these specific areas. H

Achieve Mindfulness with Sophrology Combining meditation, breathing, and relaxation techniques with gentle movement and visualization, Sophrology is being touted as moving meditation to infuse Zen into your life. Dominique Antiglio, Sophrologist/Founder of BeSophro and Author of the Life Changing Power of Sophrology reveals more. What is Sophrology used for? “Sophrology can be used in many situations, but it is often used in the context of stressrelated issues including anxiety, sleep difficulties, tension, burnout, or even to help unlock your full potential, be productive, and more focused. It can help with preparation for specific events like exams, interviews, or dealing with specific challenges of life.”

Jan/Feb 2019

22

What makes it so successful? “The method is built to allow everyone to tap into their inner resources and to transform. As you practice, you discover capabilities you didn’t realize you had for many life situations. It’s actually a very unique and dynamic way to work with consciousness and a

tool to positively deal with the challenges of modern life. Sophrology can be easily included in daily life; you can start with a daily 10 minute practice. For those who struggle with meditative practices, Sophrology notably includes movement, breathing, and visualization to allow everyone to discover the power of consciousness.”

Is this something for everyone? “Sophrology is for everyone; and it is a gentle and integrative approach. It has been created by neuropsychiatrist Alfonso Caycedo in the sixties in Spain that merges Eastern practices with Western science. His aim was to create a gentle approach to improve the daily life of patients’ and the

method rapidly developed beyond the medical environment to be used in schools, universities, corporate, and sports environments.”

How does it work? “There are many aspects in Sophrology that makes it efficient in creating more awareness and harmony within. All practices start by learning to switch into a state

where the body is relaxed and the mind is alert. The brain goes into the alpha brain wave state which is known for its relaxing and restorative qualities. Using breathing, simple movement, visualization, and meditation moments, the mind-body connection is positively influenced, enabling an exploration of new perceptions and sensations.”

A Simple Sophrology Technique—the Pump Exercise • When you feel tension building in your body or mind, simply stand up, close your eyes, and focus on the awareness of your body. • With the arms straight alongside your body, clench your fists. • Inhale, hold your breath, and move your shoulders up and down until you need to exhale again. As you exhale, relax your arms and entire body, and imagine all your tensions being released through the breath. • Pause for a moment and listen to your sensations. •Repeat three times and then sit to pause until you are ready to open your eyes again. Use Your Smart Phone to Get Healthier It is clear that one of the biggest issues we are facing in modern society is unparalleled levels of diseases caused by poor lifestyle. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 19 percent of UAE residents are diabetic and 60 percent are overly stressed. Why not use your smart phone technology to help live a healthier lifestyle instead?

Jan/Feb 2019

24

CONNECTING A HEALTH COACH WITH YOUR SMART PHONE Health coaches typically have a background in medicine; nutrition, or physical training, and help people improve lifestyles and help prevent chronic diseases. Yet the process that goes behind meeting a health coach is laborious and time consuming—especially if you have lived in a particular way for over a decade and expect to reverse that lifestyle or those habits after a 30-minutes consultation. The smart phone has, in fact, changed the entire process of health coaching and made it much more efficient and effective.

Here are three key ways smart phone technology has changed the world of health coaching: TIME

Many of us don’t have the time to visit a health coach, but a smart phone enables a video call which ensures that a consultation can be done remotely and in a time-efficient manner. Video calls also ensure that follow-up consultations and periodic check-ins can be done efficiently and more regularly.

RAPPORT

Research has shown that getting people to change habits that they have followed for a long time is very difficult. However, smart phone messaging allows continuous and ongoing communication conveniently which helps

build trust and a rapport. The coach can also share regular articles or videos to educate the client about good lifestyle tips such as intermittent fasting to convince the client to adopt the habit. Finally, the coach is always there 24/7 to support the client in moments of weakness or when the client is feeling low and wants reassurance that the habits are worth sticking to.

APPS

There are a plethora of apps that can help introduce good habits into the lifestyle and ensure that incorporating good habits becomes easy. For example, there are various apps offering short guided meditation routines that can be done at home or in a gym. More importantly, there are apps that can be used to track critical parameters like steps. H (Credit: The Health Concierge)

Why is Migraine Still a Problem? WHILE THE PROGNOSIS FOR MIGRAINE PATIENTS’ HAS NEVER LOOKED BRIGHTER, THERE ARE STILL UNMET NEEDS TO ADDRESS WHICH COULD POTENTIALLY IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR INDIVIDUALS SUFFERING FROM THIS OFTEN DEBILITATING CONDITION.

According to GlobalData’s report, ‘PharmaPoint: Migraine - Global Drug Forecast and Market Analysis to 2026’, the most pressing unmet need in migraine diagnosis is improved physician education. The report reveals that the low migraine diagnosis rate originates from a variety of factors including a lack of any diagnostic tests, and similarity to other indications such as cluster and tension type headaches, as well as a lack of time for a physician to

take a proper patient history. Rahael Maladwala, Pharma Analyst at GlobalData points out, ‘‘Just one year ago, treatments for both episodic and chronic patients’ were unable to provide adequate care for migraineurs for reasons including comorbidities, side-effects, and lack of efficacy. However, a promising late stage pipeline is coming to fruition over the next few years which will mean migraine treatment is becoming less of a headache. Nonetheless, while treatments for migraine have improved over the last year, they can

only have an impact if a patient is formally and correctly, diagnosed with the condition.” TREATMENTS

Previously, treatments for migraine were limited to triptans for episodic migraineurs, which left a lot to be desired in terms of efficacy and a variety of repurposed drugs for chronic

PHYSICIAN EDUCATION

migraineurs, which often had safety issues on top of poor efficacy profiles. “In terms of acute treatment, which aims to stop oneoff migraine attacks, Eli Lilly are developing a drug called Lasmiditan, which can be used in a larger pool of patients’ (the

current gold standard of treatment, triptans, cannot be used in patients’ with cardiovascular problems as vasoconstriction is a big issue with them) – this drug partially addresses that unmet need,” explains Maladwala.

According to Maladwala, finally, the big unmet need that is unlikely to be addressed is the need for physician education; the above treatments only work when migraine is correctly diagnosed however, often it can be confused with other types of headaches (cluster, tension type, medication overuse) which means the patient cannot be correctly treated. Therefore, there is an opportunity for pharma companies to teach physicians more about migraine and how best to go about diagnosing it. Migraine is one of the mostly highly prevalent neurological disorders in the world and it gets very little attention, which is why these treatments have taken so long to come to market and why it gets so little training. Moreover, in cases where treatment is not effective, there are non-pharma approaches that can be taken to improve quality of life, these include; educational classes on stress management, exercise, and biofeedback. Many seasoned home chefs enjoy whipping up out-of-the-box meals that include iconic seasonings and dishes from all over the world. Read on to understand local delicacies and their often-surprising land of origin.

Delectably Scottish - Chicken Tikka Masala While Chicken Tikka Masala intuitively appears to be from the Indian subcontinent, Glasgow has been laying claim to the dish for a while now. There has even been talk of giving Glasgow the EU Protected Designation of Origin status for its role in the creation of Britain’s favorite curry.

Belgian Wonder French Fries Contrary to what the name of this fried indulgence suggests, French fries may not even be French. It is said to have originated in Belgium and is part of the nation’s popculture – from art to music and advertising.

Mexican Magic Caesar Salad Here is a surprise— Caesar salad has little or nothing to do with the Roman emperor and namesake ‘Julius Caesar’. According to contemporary gastronomic lore, the salad was originally concocted in Mexico by an Italian immigrant - Caesar Cardini.

Simply South East Asian - Sushi For years, a version of sushi has been a staple across South East Asia - Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam. Its earliest form is a dish that is today known as ‘narezushi’.

Greek Gastronomy Cheesecake It may be hard to believe, but the cheesecake did not originate in New York City. It was said to have been created by the Greeks and served to athletes during the first Olympic Games in in 776 B.C.

Iranian Sugar-Rush - Jalebi "What? That’s unbelievable!” you say. "The sweet swirls of Jalebi are not from India?” Yet, it’s true. Jalebis or ‘zalibiya’ (as it’s called in Persian) was originally brought to India by Iranians during an invasion.

Dining Out

FARM-TO-TABLE FOOD, A CLASSY BRUNCH, AND FRENCH MEDITERRANEAN MEALS YOU CAN’T MISS.

BAKER & SPICE ORGANIC BRASSERIE; WHERE EVERYTHING IS LOCALLY SOURCED

Not only is there a focus on sustainability and curbing food wastage, Baker & Spice in Souk Al Bahar is 90 percent organic and fully supports local farms to bring that ‘farm to the table’ dining experience. We began with baked-in-house sourdough bread and their soup of the day—seasonal pumpkin ginger— made from locally sourced organic pumpkin, ginger, and sage. We also tucked into Beef Bresaola with labneh, with the beef cured on the premises. For our mains, we tried the tortellini stuffed with goats’ cheese and pumpkin which had just enough cheese to be well-balanced. The others we tried included linguini with prawns, and our favorite; a chicken pie which had creamy mushrooms, leeks, and organic chicken all encased in a crispy puff pastry shell. Desserts are listed on the menu, but there is also a desserts counter inside to select other options. We chose Baked Alaska—a crispy meringue shell set atop of a baked cake slice with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream—which was superb. Baker & Spice is one of those relaxing places you can go for a healthy, delicious meal and enjoy the Instaworthy views of the Dubai Fountains and Burj Khalifa while dining. www.soukalbahar.ae Jan/Feb 2019

For starters, we tried their burrata salad which is unlike others as the creamy burrata cheese is specially sourced, making it one of Dubai’s best. Also, we enjoyed the humble red lentil soup—a simple, yet comforting dish and the tomato soup with garlic, chives, and olive oil. Our mains consisted of Chef Izu’s signature burger with seared tenderloin, caramelized onions, and Hollandaise sauce in a homemade Brioche bun. The Italian Gnocchi was light with a creamy pesto sauce, but the rigatoni with fried onions, mushrooms, and truffle was our unanimous favorite.

LEVEE’S FRENCH MEDITERRANEAN MEALS BY THE BEACH

Levee at La Mer is a mainly French eatery with a Mediterranean twist boasting healthy, fresh food. Chef Izu Anu is the consulting chef and brains behind the menu—so from the olive oil to the breads; it’s either sourced from his farm or created from scratch on the premises.

For a chilly evening outdoors, we had their baked French toast—a large portion of homemade bread, served with a scoop of ice-cream. The caramel cake served with a crème Anglaise also hit the right notes. With healthy European styled food, Levee is an ideal place to indulge in a delicious meal alongside the beach. And with Chef Izu behind the menu, you definitely will not go wrong. www.leveecafeandlounge.ae Jan/Feb 2019

FRENCH CHARM AND ELEGANT FOOD AT CARINE

Located in the heart of the Emirates Golf Club, Carine is owned and operated by Chef Izu Ani who is behind The Lighthouse, La Serre, La Petite Maison, and Izu Brasserie & Bakery. With floor-to-ceiling windows, each table has a large bottle of organic olive oil sourced from Chef Izu’s own farm in Greece. Served in a small bowl, a huge fresh Sicilian lemon and some vinegar is added to create the most divine dipping sauce for the fresh breads. Our starters included a light truffle tart alongside green beans and foie gras—with a twist of apples and muted flavors. Then probably our favorite—the grilled harissa prawns with a delectable jus that was ideal for dipping the fresh bread. From the mains, we enjoyed the hearty beef rigatoni and the grilled sea bass with sumac rice which was a flavorful medley of herbs and tomatoes. To finish off the meal, we tucked into passion fruit cheesecake and Tiramisu—both which had just the right amount of sweetness. An elegant venue, Carine serves up fresh and flavorful dishes with French/ Mediterranean style hospitality amidst beautiful views of Dubai’s most famed golf course. www.dubaigolf.com Jan/Feb 2019

THE MEAT CO. INTRODUCES BRUNCH

The Meat Co. at Souk Al Bahar recently renovated its space and has introduced a Friday brunch. With an open kitchen, cold starters were the only self-serve part of this 'served to the table' brunch. We helped ourselves to fresh oysters, Tuna Tartare, Wagyu Bresaola, and quinoa salad while at the table; we were served chocolate and beetroot bread. Hot starters were served at the table as well as our mains. The hot salt and pepper calamari with a five spiced Yuzu mayo was really flavorful and the Beef Boerewors with African spices, polenta chips, and peas shoot was a big hit. From the mains, the Duo of Chicken— seared chicken Maryland and breast with broad beans cassolette and bacon snow peas was succulent and very light. The kids had the American Prime Rib-Eye with truffle fries. The meal ended with the Chef ’s special—a refreshing iced platter of selected fruits—Dragon fruit, rambutin, mangosteen, plus tiny bowls of chocolate ice-cream, chocolate bomb, and yogurt cake. This is a happening brunch that serves high-quality food with a super friendly staff and great views of Downtown Dubai. H www.themeatco.com Jan/Feb 2019

Innovating the Ketogenic Diet The Ketogenic (Keto) diet is a huge buzzword in the health world these days and undoubtedly, it has enabled people to lose weight effectively and safely. However, Weight Loss Coach Alexia Bjarkan explains that combining the Keto diet with ice baths is an even better way to shed the excess kilos safely. THE KETO DIET AT A GLANCE Basically, a Ketogenic diet is high in fat, but moderate in protein, and low in carbs. During this type of eating, Bjarkan points out that the body has limited access to glucose from carbs which triggers the body to use fat as its main source of fuel. What happens is this fat breaks down to ketones— the molecules that stave off hunger and speed up weight loss. THE ROLE OF ICE BATHS According to Bjarkan, cold exposure, such as ice baths is a practical and useful tool for developing resilience to adhere to the new eating habits entailed by the Keto diet. It’s especially good for those who have a longterm pattern and history of overeating, which can be tough to stop. This is where ice baths can be powerful, she says, as it is through facing our fears and the

discomfort of submerging in ice, we practice resilience. “We can then use the same mental strength when resisting junk food, and choosing a new, healthy diet,” explains Bjarkan. WORKING SYNERGISTICALLY The combination of a Ketogenic diet and ice baths is highly successful as they support each other physically and mentally, narrates Bjarkan. “Firstly, the Ketogenic diet turns off hunger and cravings, and then the ice baths help build the mental strength to stay on track with new eating habits,” she tells. “I see great results with my coaching clients and most of them lose around two to four kilos in their first week of coaching, until reaching their target weight.”

MORE TIPS FOR HEALTHY WEIGHT LOSS Practice intermittent fasting through eating within a six-hour window. Combine healthy protein, fats, and vegetables to turn off hunger and cravings. Good sleep is critical for weight loss. Be sure to keep all electronic gadgets out of the sleeping domain. Also aim to sleep and wake up at the same times daily.

Don’t Let Perimenopause Get You Down

Dr. Marilyn Glenville

Jan/Feb 2019

38

PREPARING FOR MENOPAUSE IS NOT SOMETHING MANY WOMEN DO OR EVEN THINK ABOUT, YET THE REALITY IS THAT PERIMENOPAUSE CAN START TO CREEP UP, BRINGING WITH IT SYMPTOMS THAT CAN BE A HINDRANCE. DR. MARILYN GLENVILLE PHD, A LEADING UK BASED NUTRITIONIST AND AUTHOR OF 14 INTERNATIONALLY BEST-SELLING BOOKS, DETAILS HOW TO COPE WITH THE EMOTIONAL CHALLENGES OF MENOPAUSE.

What it means

When women talk about going through the menopause they are actually describing perimenopause, tells Dr. Glenville. “Many women can start to experience hormonal changes from around the age of 40 and remember, perimenopause is a time of change, and your female hormones are going to be fluctuating up and down,” she says, so the more gradually you go through this stage, the less hormone fluctuations you experience and the easier the transition.

Symptoms

Emotional symptoms can include irritability, crying spells, anxiety and tension, forgetfulness, low self-esteem, lack of concentration, depression, mood swings, indecisiveness, and fearfulness. Symptoms, she adds, can be connected to your adrenal glands – as your ovaries decline in the production of estrogen, your adrenal glands take over some of this role and produce a form of estrogen.

Preventive steps to help cope

Trying to reduce stress from the outside is not always easy and the only way you may be able to control what is happening is to control how you react to the stress. The other way to control the stress hormones is to watch what and how you eat. Adrenaline and

cortisol are released as your blood sugar drops and can give you symptoms such as mood swings, irritability, crying spells, aggressive outbursts, tiredness, anxiety and tension, inability to concentrate, forgetfulness, and sweating—many of the symptoms we associate with the perimenopause. Dr. Glenville suggests to sort out your blood sugar balance first as you may be surprised how many of these ‘perimenopause’ symptoms disappear. Stabilize blood sugar levels by reducing the amount of sugar and refined foods in the diet by eating little and often to reduce the toll on the adrenal glands.

Reduce or eliminate Caffeinated drinks such as tea and coffee which contribute to the blood sugar problem. Certain nutrients can also help

a woman cope better and reduce the impact of that stress. These include the B vitamins, especially B5 for stress relief and energy, magnesium - nature’s tranquilizer for relaxation and sleep, chromium for blood sugar balance, Siberian ginseng which acts as a tonic to the adrenal glands, and L-theanine for reducing stress and anxiety as well as helping the brain to switch off to go to sleep. Also, any exercise that reduces stress such as yoga can be helpful. And it is important to aim to get six to eight hours of sleep a night. Consider using aromatherapy oils, such as Bergamot, lavender, Roman chamomile, and marjoram in a warm bath, just before bed. A few drops on your pillow at bedtime, or used in a vaporizer, can have the same effect. H

Is Your Makeup Harming Your Fertility? We are all aware of the nasties in our food and environment that can have an impact on fertility. HEALTH speaks with Dr. Pankaj Shrivastav, a pioneer in the field of Reproductive Medicine, to learn more about the potential harm that these seemingly innocuous products can have on our fertility.

ENDOCRINE DISRUPTOR CHEMICALS

It is no secret that cosmetics and beauty products are full of chemicals. Studies show that products such as nail polish, perfumes, antibacterial soaps, antiaging creams, and more, have high chemical content that contains endocrine disruptor chemicals, tells Dr. Shrivastav. “One such group of chemicals that are phthalates, a group of nonpersistent chemicals that are used in a variety of consumer products across the globe,” he explains. “The high molecular weight Bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate or DEHP is used to add flexibility to polyvinyl chloride and other plastics products. Low molecular weight phthalates such as Di-butyl phthalate (DBP) and diethyl phthalate (DEP) are used as solvents in

Jan/Feb 2019

40

personal care products to hold color and scent.” Women of reproductive age have a specific exposure risk profile to DBP which is commonly used in nail polishes.

THE IMPACT

Globally, more than 18 billion pounds of phthalates are used each year, primarily as plasticizers to create flexibility in plastics. According to Dr. Shrivastav, these chemicals can be found in cosmetic products such as lotions, perfumes, and nail polishes. He elaborates, “Select phthalate metabolites have been associated with decreased sperm concentration and motility, and increased sperm DNA damage. Interestingly, phthalates have also demonstrated to reduce fertility with decreased pregnancy rates,

increased miscarriages, and other gestational complications.” Moreover, it has been demonstrated that these plasticizers negatively modulate oocyte growth, ovulation, and embryonic development, leading to impaired ovarian function. Interference with ovarian steroid synthesis and metabolism could partially explain these effects.

AWARENESS IS KEY

So what do we do? How do we even begin to protect ourselves and our future generations from items that have become an intrinsic part of daily use and selfcare? “The first step is always awareness,” says Dr. Shrivastav. “This is why scientific research and development is so vital and it is imperative that we as medical physicians take this kind of knowledge to the

public and make them aware of potential environmental dangers.” He advises that when it comes to plastic, avoid their use as much as possible. When it comes to cosmetics, flip the label and read the ingredients. When you see phthalate listed as an ingredient – don’t buy it. There are many certified organic products and companies available; however, it is imperative to do your research before you make your purchase.

HELPFUL WEBSITES

To avoid the toxic dangers of many leading cosmetic brands, opt for organic cosmetics. For more information about specific products and the chemicals they contain, visit the Environmental Working Group’s searchable cosmetics database. www. cosmeticsdatabase.com. Another similarly useful website is: www. safecosmetics.org. Here is a list of companies who have pledged not to use chemicals that are known for, or strongly suspected of causing cancer, mutations, or birth defects. Embodying Fitness‌ Shilpa Shetty Kundra More than a Bollywood celebrity, Shilpa Shetty Kundra is also a successful businesswoman who takes her fitness and well-being very seriously, reflected in her fitness, cooking, and healthy living videos. Here she discusses how she manages to stay fit while keeping everything in balance.

Jan/Feb 2019

48

Personal Fitness

“My aim is to be fit so the form doesn’t really matter— it can be yoga, it can be core strengthening, high intensity training; anything that improves my strength and agility, and flexibility is the form that I enjoy; I also enjoy doing weights for my legs because this works very well for me. And with age, you need to strengthen your muscles as there is a loss of bone density muscle mass.”

Specific Diet

“I start off the day with a big meal and by the end of the day, I eat like a pauper. For breakfast, I try to include something raw in the form of a fruit or avocado. I do not indulge in or encourage any added refined sugar or refined flour in my food or my meal plans; and yes, I do eat carbohydrates contrary to popular belief. But I try to minimize my carbs by the end of the day. Breakfast is eggs, and lunch is also fish, chicken, or meat or some high protein vegetables. In the night I have a clear soup with some boiled beetroot, sometimes chicken or grilled fish, and some stir-fried vegetables.”

Coping with Stress

“Being a full-time mom, I try my best to get in three days of yoga/weight training; but I try to concentrate on my breath at the end of the day when I meditate. While I try to get in three days of weight training, one or two days a week, I let go of any kind of regime for my body to rest, rejuvenate, and recover from my workout. Travel also takes a toll so sometimes you need to give your body rest. I actually give sleep and rest as much importance as my gym regime.”

Nourishing the Spirit

“Yoga is the only holistic form of exercise that not only helps you physically, but also mentally. It definitely makes you more flexible and helps in toning. This helps in your overall fitness and wellness because if you are mentally fit, you are calmer. Also you are able to think in a more positive way and essentially, you can only come away with positives when you start to do yoga. Also, Pranayamas, or deep breathing, help me stay in top mental health.” H

Timings

“While I don’t complicate my meals, the only difference is that I eat my last meal between 7 to 8 pm. It is very important to stop eating at least three hours before you go to bed.” Jan/Feb 2019

THE TREATMENT

According to Dr. Haus, biologic therapies involve the use of substances called biological response modifiers (BRMs). The body usually produces these in small amounts, but through technology, they can be used in large amounts to treat conditions such as cancer, rheumatoid

Psoriasis, explains Dr. Haus, is a common skin ailment that accelerates the life cycle of skin cells. In this condition, cells build up rapidly on the surface of the skin, and these extra skin cells form scales and red patches that are often painful and itchy. As psoriasis is a chronic disease that often comes and goes, Dr. Haus elaborates that biologic therapy is designed to stimulate or restore the ability of the body’s immune system to fight infection and disease. “Other drugs are made from plants or

OTHER CONDITIONS

This is a revolutionary treatment for patients’ suffering with chronic diseases such as psoriasis and arthritis, explains Dr. Haus. “It is minimally invasive as it is simple to administer and does not require surgical intervention,” he notes, “the treatment protocol is tailored to each patient and the dosage and frequency very much depends on the patient.” It is not uncommon for a doctor to prescribe one dose per week for the first five weeks and then once a month thereafter. However, for some patients it may just be monthly treatments that are needed. H

Her Highness Sheikha Saeed Salmeen is a Wedding and Events Planner at the Sheraton Sharjah Beach Resort & Spa. Specific Challenges

“Currently, there are not many local Emirati or women from the Gulf who work in the hospitality industry. Hence in my career I felt that I actually had to prove myself more to my family, my friends, my colleagues, and our clients that I can excel in my job because I have the passion for what I do."

Achieving with Balance

“In hospitality we traditionally work long hours and I have managed to integrate my work life and my leisure life as I do what I do out of passion. At the same time, my family gives me that balance and support when I need to wind down. I believe if you work towards your dream, you can achieve anything no matter what challenges you face.”

Dynamic Leadership in Dubai

“There are lots of government initiatives supporting women in business and Emiratization outside the government sector. Nowadays in Sharjah, there are more entities supporting women led start-ups and entrepreneurs, and I am happy to be part of that movement contributing my share to the economy of the country.”

Heba Rumhein is the Founder of The H Concepts & Events and Siraj Restaurant in Dubai. Specific Challenges

“The main challenge is that clients in Dubai always have high expectations when it comes to products, designs, food, or dining experiences. Hence its always important to meet those expectations by continuously being innovative and creating something that attracts the attention and the appreciation of people.”

Achieving with Balance

“The first step to achieving a better work-life balance is to think about the current demands of your professional and personal life. You’ll then be able to establish your own set of rules that allow you to strike the right balance between each one. Some of the rules that I follow when it comes to this includes: creating realistic boundaries between work and non-work commitments, prioritizing tasks and events within both, setting time aside for yourself, and learning to say no.”

Dynamic Leadership in Dubai

“Dubai supports young entrepreneurs who have a great vision and who are committed to deliver. They have put in a wellplanned system that works to empower women entrepreneurs, I was able to gain a lot of knowledge about this system from the great leaders during the time I worked with them in hospitality, and that’s how I decided to open my own business.” H Jan/Feb 2019

The Right Way to Talk to Your Children

Communication is not only an expression of words or gestures, but is listening and paying attention to each other in an active and positive way, as well as sharing meals and playful interaction. But what should not be communicated to your children? HEALTH investigates.

Jan/Feb 2019

58

WHY IT MATTERS

Whether it happens around the dinner table or during the car ride home from school, communication is more than just an exchange of words. Further elaborating, Dr. Valeria Risoli, a clinical

psychologist tells that family relationships help children learn how to communicate verbally and non-verbally. And with all of us glued to gadgets, if the effort is not made to promote real communication amongst

families and social groups, the future generations’ society will be made of people unable to talk to each other, a society of individuals unaware of the existence of other people around, and a society of loneliness.

PARENTS TALK

Parents should communicate to their kids what is going on, always adopting a simple and clear way of talking that is appropriate for their age. But some things should be avoided, as follows: 1. Kids do not need to be informed about grown ups issues: arguments between parents, financial difficulties, or serious family issues. Respect the age of your children, and do not load them with worries and situations that they are not emotionally ready to deal with. 2. Your children do not need to know how good other children are. They need to be praised and appreciated for what they are and have, without being compared to anyone else. 3. Your children do not need to be informed about disturbing and traumatic events of life: let them enjoy their age without spoiling their serene development with details that they are not ready to face. 4. If you are facing difficulties within your marital relationship or at work, your children do not need to be informed about the details and should not hear negative comments about their mom, dad, or even your boss. 5. Parents should not keep secrets about important events—such as an illness of a family member as children can understand and sense if something is happening. H

The Pride of UAE Meet Emirati Athlete

Abdulrahman Al Hosani Emirati athlete Abdulrahman Al Hosani began running marathons more than a decade after his recovery from a football related injury. Now training for the illustrious Ironman Race, he tells HEALTH about his passion for running.

FINDING BALANCE

“I work as an Aircraft Engineer in Turbine Services and Solutions, Mubadala Aerospace and recently, have acquired the Operations Manager position. Also, I am representing the UAE Jan/Feb 2019

in different international competitions in Triathlons and Marathons. I have an average of four hours training a day, divided in two sessions. One session is early morning before going to work. The second session is after work.

My long training sessions are on weekends as I can start early morning and manage to complete all sessions during the morning in order to have time with family later on.

LEADING A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

“In order to support the quality training done, I am following a healthy meal plan with a healthy balance of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. It’s important to keep up a healthy lifestyle and to keep sports as a passion as it makes life more interesting and fun.”

THE JOURNEY

“In the last five years of my triathlon competitions, I have done many International Triathlon Union races around the world representing the UAE and also, I qualified twice to the World Championships and am hoping for better achievement in the future. In order to reach our goals, we should start by managing our time. Then we should create a plan and be serious about achieving and understanding the importance of instilling self-discipline.”

THE GOVERNMENT OF DUBAI SUPPORTS A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE “Our government is supporting sports in all different ways by building several amazing running and cycling tracks and also, amazing sports facilities such as Olympic swimming pools. All of these are giving us more motivation in keeping sports as part of our daily routine and is also encouraging others and motivating them to take part as well.”

HEALTH ADVICE

“Just start to think about how to live a healthier life by doing things with more enjoyment and make running and exercise as your stress reliever of choice.” H

THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE— IRONMAN

“Running in a marathon for 42 kilometers is challenging as you need to follow a good training schedule and a healthy diet as well, while also keeping in mind not to miss any training sessions during the period that you are preparing for an upcoming event. Most important is to keep hydrated during training as we are doing long distances. Training for an Ironman will be a similar preparation; the difference will be in adding bike and swim sessions with the run.” Jan/Feb 2019

Get to Know Chef and Food Writer Joudie Kalla

With a mission for Palestinian and Middle Eastern food to be viewed in the same league as Italian and French cuisines, Chef and Food Writer Joudie Kalla’s first book ‘Palestine On a Plate’ became an instant hit with critics, charting on The New York Times bestselling list. Her latest book 'Baladi' takes the reader on a journey through Palestinian food and culture that is influenced by the diversity of Palestinian food.

Jan/Feb 2019

62

THE START

I realized I loved cooking when my mother took me in the kitchen with her and I saw how much passion she had for it. It was where she went to relax and be creative. I loved recreating the dishes I had grown up eating when I had moved to live in Paris at age 20. It became a lifeline for me as the nostalgia, memories, flavors, tastes, and smells were so important for me.

THE BASIS FOR PALESTINE ON A PLATE

'Palestine on a Plate' happened naturally—I knew I wanted to make some waves by talking about Palestine and putting the name on the front of my book, but most of all I wanted to highlight not only the food, but us as a people. Palestine and its food deserve to be at the forefront of Middle Eastern cooking. I wanted to change the conversation of Palestine that is often portrayed in the media, to give us a soul and a sense of humanity.

COMPONENTS OF A TRADITIONAL PALESTINIAN MEAL

The seasonings include lots of lemons, chili, garlic, shatta, tahineh, za’atar, sumac, and olive oil, but it’s what they are served with is what counts—fresh fish, meats, and gorgeous grains and salads. I am one hundred percent embracing the traditional recipes because we cannot forget where we come from and who these dishes were made by; they are important to preserve and share to keep history and culture alive. Saying that, I am a chef and I am creative in the kitchen, but I

always put the original dish in the book.

THE BOOKS

My family is huge and we have such a magnificent array of recipes between us all, but Baladi was created slightly differently. Because of the success of 'Palestine on a Plate', I thought I would interact with all the amazing people who bought my

book and ask them what they wanted in the book. So hundreds of emails came in and we put those recipes in, giving credit to those families who have now become part of my fabric of life. We also had nearly 15 different location photographers working on this book which really gave it perspectives from other people. H

PARMIGIANI FLEURIER PRESENTS

THE NEW KALPA COLLECTION… A SHAPE IN A SHAPE

Jan/Feb 2019

66

20 years after the creation of the first shaped movement that powered the Kalpa’s ancestor, the iconic tonneau shaped family once again took center stage; a new generation of Kalpas boasting one hundred percent in-house complications, and presenting tonneau shaped movements perfectly adapted to their cases. This ‘form within a form’ expressed Michel Parmigiani’s cherished desire to achieve complete harmony within the watch: between the movement and the case; between the concealed and the visible.

KALPAGRAPHE CHRONOMETER

The edgy masculinity of this watch lies in its chronograph. Powered by a new shaped movement bearing the hallmarks of Parmigiani Fleurier, the caliber PF362 is a COSC-certified, self-winding, integrated chronograph which includes chronograph functions as well as hour, minute, small seconds, a date display, and tachymeter scale, with a 65-hour power reserve. Crafted and manufactured in-house across a span of six years, this caliber presents an accuracy of one tenth of a second. Also, its variableinertia balance is held in place by a bridge for stability against shocks.

Integrated with the handpolished 48.2 x 40.4 miliimeters tonneau case, the timepiece is waterresistant to 30 meters and the movement is showcased through the sapphire caseback, along with the 22 carat

gold oscillating weight and its barley grain guilloché motif. The dial is split into different levels and showcases a blue center treated with PVD and opaline finish. The display is an amalgamation of Delta-shaped hands, slightly off-center counters, and a rounded date indicator with three numerals and the novelty is affixed to a black alligator strap. H

Personal Fitness “I believe in overall well-being, and in doing and following a routine which makes me feel happy. I hate monotony as I can become bored easily so sometimes I dance, do yoga, go for a jog, or go for a walk. But some form of exercise is necessary to stay happy and keep fit. I also eat what I want, but in moderation. For me, overall health is what matters; the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.”

Meal Plans “I’ve become vegetarian for many years now and strictly stick to this way of eating. I love coffee and I start my day with a big mug of coffee, and two more mugs anytime during the day. Through the day I eat light meals at regular intervals which consist of fruits, salad, vegetables, breads, coconut water, lime water, and nuts to snack on. I eat one good meal early evening for dinner which is anything vegetarian. I have a sweet tooth so some chocolate after dinner is a must.”

Tried and Tested Health Tips “Only eat when hungry, drink lots of water, and aim to get lots of good restful sleep, and very importantly, stay positive and focus on mental health. Health is wealth because only a strong body and mind can survive and live a good, long healthy life.”

Coping with Stress “I think we forget to breathe and most issues stem from this. It is important to relax and breathe and whenever possible, I would advise to meditate, even if for a small duration for which yoga is helpful. I remember at one time

I had high cholesterol due to stress and that’s when I realized that most diseases stem from mental health issues. Therefore, meditation, adequate sleep, a balanced diet, and lots of water during the day is important.”

Supplementation “I do not believe in supplementing the diet with supplements, but at one point I had lost a lot of weight, so in order to gain some muscle I underwent weight training. At this time, I took protein supplements for a brief

period, but that’s the first and last time I did. But I advise sticking to natural sources of vitamins and proteins which is the best option.”

Sleep Habits “Sleep is the most important part of my life. There are days when I don’t get more than four to five hours of sleep, but I balance it out by catching up on sleep on the days with less work; my ideal amount of sleep is 10 hours.” H

Understanding Surgery; a One-on-One with Dr. Ritu Khare What are some recent groundbreaking laparoscopic surgical techniques for cancer patients?

Dr. Ritu Khare,

Consultant Surgeon, Laparoscopic, Bariatric, and Breast Surgeon

A surgeon par excellence, Dr. Ritu Khare is a Consultant Surgeon practicing in the UAE for the last 15 years. She specializes in advanced laparoscopic surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, bariatric surgery, and breast diseases. Here she highlights some exciting aspects about her field.

“It is an exciting phase. The first barrier has been breached. Patients’ understand how keyhole or laparoscopic surgery can benefit them. For cancers, the results of laparoscopic surgery are comparable or even better than open surgery. Patient acceptance and tolerance is better and post-operative recovery is faster. The survival of cancer patients’ has further improved with advances in adjuvant therapies. Minimally invasive surgery is by far the most important advance in the surgical field and is applicable in all sub-specialties. From a simple condition like repair of abdominal hernia or removal of the gallbladder to the most complex biliary and pancreatic surgeries; these can all be done by small holes in the abdominal wall. But it takes years of training and skills to get the correct combination.”

What makes surgeries of the breast interesting to you?

“Women are women at the core. The breast is one part of the body which signifies feminism. Even after years, there is a strong element of inhibition in women to be able to openly express discomfort, pain, or something abnormal. This inherent issue leads to a delay in diagnosis of breast cancer, which if detected early is imminently curable. Being a female in this surgical field, it has been a privilege to have been able to break this barrier. It is overwhelming to see a large number of women seeking an opinion and eventually getting diagnosed. The

presence of a female surgeon is required at the grassroots level. Breast cancer is increasing at an alarming rate and despite so much hype, we still have millions who need awareness and attention. It is an honor to be at a pedestal where one can directly offer valuable service, perform surgeries, and help save someone every single day.”

What are your favorite and challenging aspects about your job as a female surgeon?

“Being a surgeon gives you ‘power’ and the humility to accompany with it. You can only try your best to save or cure the patient. Many a times you succeed and there are times you don’t. The challenges are that you need to abide by the principles and ethics. Do not advise an un-indicated surgery. Always consider as if the patient was your ‘kin’ and try to do your best. Always remember ‘The patient trusts you and has put his faith in you.’ The other challenge is to deal with prejudice. A patient comes to you because you are a female surgeon; you diagnose a breast or a colon cancer and then the same patient gets operated by a male colleague, assuming him to be more capable. If a doctor is capable to diagnose, she is capable to treat as well. We need to keep our craft, training, and skill set updated. There is no scope of complacency. There is no scope for error. The patient also has to understand and respect the years of hard work before discriminating on the basis of gender.” Web: www.lapsurgery.ae Email: dr.ritu.khare@gmail.com. Jan/Feb 2019

Dental Implants Restore all Teeth Loss and Preserve Teeth and Facial Appearance During the second visit - after applying local anesthesia - the damaged tooth is removed, and the titanium implant post is inserted into the jawbone.

A dental implant is titanium screws that replace the roots of a missing or damaged tooth, which in its turn, is inserted into a prepared bony socket in the jaw and can be used to replace a single, several, or all teeth. Dr. Hussain, Founder and Specialist Prosthodontist and Oral Implantologist at Oris Dental Center in Dubai, UAE explains more about dental implants.

Dr. Hussain explains that first; the restorative dentist decides the type of dental implant that best suits the patient and requests some additional x-rays to determine the precise measurements.

During the healing process -between 6 to 12 weeks- the implant will be osseointegrated into the natural jawbone so that the bone will grow and form a solid lasting foundation for teeth replacement. Once the implant is integrated into the jawbone, a small extension called the abutment is placed over the dental implant above the gum line and an impression is taken to create the patient’s custom crown, bridge, or denture. Dr. Hussain states that dental implants have important advantages. It is safe because the prosthesis is attached to the bone only. Also, implants function in the same way as natural teeth and prevent bone loss, plus it helps in providing a natural chewing sensation. Also, the dental implant can be used to give removable dentures a firm grip, and there is no need to use special glue to hold the false teeth in place. Additionally, studies have proven that implants can last up to

25 years or more if kept healthy and clean. Dr. Hussain recommends dental implants to patients’ whose goal is to restore the appearance of the teeth. However, it is preferable if patients' are over 18-years-old to ensure that the bone tissue is fully developed. He adds, “Your restorative dentist must make sure that your oral hygiene is in healthy condition before treatment, because the longterm success of implants depends on good plaque control”. Like any surgery, dental implants have some health risks. However, most risks can be prevented and are easily treated. It is recommended that all implant patients’ follow a proper dental hygiene routine to prevent implant complications; it is important to brush, floss, and visit the dentist every six months to perform regular checkups and early diagnosis of gum inflammation around the implant, and avoid smoking.

Globetrotting the World on Social Media

Lena and Bassam Elzayn run a couples lifestyle and travel blog together, Happily Ever Adventures. They have also been on Instagram for two and a half years and their blog for around two years. Here they talk about what it takes to make a successful travel social media platform work.

WHAT IT TAKES

“Being a successful travel blogger and influencer takes dedication. It can be a lot of work and growth can often be slow. There are a lot of different things to learn and you need to always stay flexible because the blog world is constantly changing. It’s important to know your ‘why’ behind doing this and

to see the big picture. There are a lot of shortcuts you can take, but they won’t lead to success in the long term. Remember your why, see the big picture, and have patience as you persist.”

UNWRITTEN RULES FOR SOCIAL MEDIA POSTING “Make sure whatever you’re posting is authentic and

true to you. Post photos and captions that you’re excited to share with your audience. Posting content that is not authentic to you, such as a sponsored post for a brand you don’t actually love, isn’t worth losing your audiences trust over.”

MOST INSTAGRAMMABLE TRAVEL DESTINATIONS

“Bora Bora – From the turquoise blue waters to the pearly sand beaches, being at Bora Bora is like being inside a screensaver. You can’t take a bad photo here if you tried.” “Colombia – From colorful buildings to flower filled balconies, everywhere you

Creating a Balanced Home Space for Optimal Wellness

Most of us have heard of Feng Shui to a certain extent, but how it can control the flow of energy created by nature to help us with our wellness quotient is something new. Read on as Feng Shui Wellness Designer Simone Osswald explains the basis of Feng Shui.

The Qi Flow Qi is the life-force energy for good health that Osswald says enters our homes through our entrance door. “Once Jan/Feb 2019

inside our homes, we can facilitate the energy to flow to our advantage, providing us with Qi for good health,” she says. “The basic principle is that through good health we promote

clarity of thought, which in turn leads to success and confidence, and eventually interpersonal skills and harmony.”

The Application in the Home According to Osswald, the application of Feng Shui inside a home works best when we look at two key topics, namely: the use of the space and the positioning of furniture

and decorative items. In terms of furniture and decorative items, these items can be of any design style and taste and there is no need at all to use Chinese artifacts or accessories to make Feng Shui work.

Mirrors and water features for instance, are important items in Feng Shui and can enhance good energy in specific areas of the home, regardless of their style,” she explains, and also, colors, shapes, and patterns as well as materials can be used to bring a range of desired energies for health and wealth into our homes.

Rebalancing a Room for Clarity Our environment shapes us as everything in our home emits certain energy, stresses Osswald. “We perceive these energies either consciously or subconsciously; consciously we may have restless sleep in our bedroom for example, if it is filled with too many colorful patterns, accessories, and too much clutter,” she says, while subconsciously, we feel unsafe if we sleep in a bed with bookshelves hanging overhead on the headboard wall. If we rebalance our

home, and especially the bedroom, by rearranging furniture, decluttering, and decorating according to the Feng Shui principles, our state of mind will instantly improve, resulting in restful sleep, which is the primary factor for wellbeing.

Simple Techniques Although Feng Shui does not work with a “one fits all” formula, Osswald points out that there are some general rules that can instantly improve the energy of a home. She elaborates, “The most important area in any home is the entrance as this is where the important energy enters the home. Keep it clutterfree, welcoming, and well-lit and make sure the door opens fully and easily.” If a mirror is needed in the entrance, it should not face the door. Another general tip is to remove obstacles for easy walkabout in the entire home and provide good lighting and fresh air for all rooms. Also, sharp edges on furniture should be avoided and natural materials should be preferred to all manmade materials. H

From pediatric questions to general medical queries, our panel of experts is here to answer your questions….

OPEN PORES

Question: I am a 34-year-old with fairly good skin that I take care of at home. Despite this, I have enlarged open pores. Is there a remedy for this?

Olimpia Carmen

Skin Care & Anti-Aging Specialist responds, “Everyone has those little openings on the outer layer of our skin, but the key to making pores appear smaller is to keep them clear. However, for stubborn pores, you’ll need to take your treatment to the next level – a professional one. I always use a combination of skin care treatments for dramatic results, but these require some downtime. The ablative laser fractional CO2 in combination with the plasma rich treatment, or Q-Switch Laser followed by Dermapen infusion or MesoGold as these provide a more permanent solution to large pores. However, the demand in Dubai nowadays is for treatments with little to no downtime so Q-Switch Laser is the best non-invasive option for now. The heat of the 1064 Q-Switch wavelength heats ‘old, loose’ collagen deeply, shrinking the sebaceous glands, while producing new collagen, thereby closing the open pores.”

SULLEN TEENAGER

Question: My otherwise happy teenage daughter has become sullen recently. Could she be suffering from depression?

Dr. Sheetal Kini

Clinical Psychologist responds, “It could be possible that your daughter is suffering from depression. However, it could also be possible that she is experiencing an emotionally difficult period in her life; there is a difference. Some key signs of depression are: significant changes in appetite and sleep, difficulties with concentration, fatigue, loss of pleasure in activities and low mood consistently for most days over a two-week period. The best way to help her would be to approach her when she is relatively open to conversation and share that you have noticed she has been sad or low. Tell her that you are concerned and that you’re there to listen non-judgmentally and to support her in any way she may need you. Share with her that if she doesn’t wish to speak to you, but would speak to a professional or someone else, that is also okay. If she withdraws again, let her know that you understand she is not ready to talk, but that you’ll check in later. It could also be helpful to write her a letter if she is unwilling to hear you out.”

LIFTING AND TIGHTENING

Question: I have heard Ultherapy is great for lifting and tightening. Can you please explain if it will help my sagging jowls?

Dr. Sanjay Parashar,

Consultant Plastic Surgeon explains, “Sagging jowls are due to either skin sagging or drop in the cheek fat to the jowl areas. Sometimes it may be due to excess fat accumulation in the lower face and neck line that gives a sagging appearance. If your weight is stable and near normal range for your age and height, then tightening the skin and underlying muscle will help reduce the sagging jowls. Ultherapy is the only nonsurgical technology that penetrates skin at multiple levels—1.5, 3, and 4.5 millimeters to cause a firming of the layers of skin. It is an ultrasonic technology that penetrates like a cone of the beam into deeper layers and generates a sudden increase in temperature that causes collagen to contract. Ultherapy can be done on the cheeks, jawline, neck, and even in the brow region. However, if fat accumulation is the cause of sagging jowls, then just ultherapy alone may not give the best results.” H
