Don’t Let

Summer Make Your Family Sick Despite Covid taking a backseat, there is a rise in the number of respiratory and influenza cases in the region, many of which are correlated with allergies to dust, pollution, and pollen. Here to help, Alexander Provins, Director EMEA, Blueair reveals the key ways to reduce allergens in your home to ensure your family stays healthy during the summer.

July/Aug 2022

8

According to the National Center of Meteorology (NCM), the UAE is expected to see a rise in humidity and dusty weather with the rising temperatures in the coming days. In such conditions, typical determinants of allergens such as pollen and dust particles can pass through the eyes, nose, throat and other mucosal tissues and skin, directly causing varying degrees of irritations or allergic reactions as well as respiratory diseases.

WASH IT AWAY

Those of us with severe allergies face the most challenges during this time of year, as tiny particles irritate the insides of the nose, followed by the sinuses being provoked as well. In addition to the forecasted weather conditions, the spring and summer months in the region can be considered a peak time for allergies as trees and grass release pollen grains into the air as well as the increase in dust the hotter temperatures bring. These contaminants can get stuck on our clothes, where we can then bring them into the

home and thus increase the chance of causing irritation. Considering this, it is advisable to change clothes and shower thoroughly when returning home. This way, collected pollen and dust on our clothes are washed away and do not make their way inside the home.

CONTROL DUST

According to research by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, dust found in indoor air can lower productivity and increase a feeling of fatigue. To keep sand and dust out of your home, close doors and windows immediately and seal them with adhesive tape if required. Also, dust can be found on carpets and in cluttered spaces. By removing unnecessary items from surfaces and minimizing the number of carpets in the home, it can help to reduce levels of dust allergens in the house. Regularly vacuuming the home can also be a quick and easy solution to help control a build-up of indoor air pollutants

CONTROL TEMPERATURES

Hot and humid houses are breeding grounds for allergens, bacteria, and dust mites. The moisture in the air allows bacteria to multiply, which can become harmful. To stop the growth of these allergens, an efficient way is to control the overall house temperature, keeping it between 22-23 Celsius. If possible, the relative humidity should be set no higher than 50 percent. Regularly cleaning AC ducts is also an effective way to reduce allergens from spreading throughout the home. Although allergy symptoms are inevitable at some point during the year, your home can be a refuge from contaminants. Ensure to take the required measures to reduce allergens to increase the air quality inside the home and breathe easily during this dusty weather.

CONSUME MORE LIQUIDS

Drink lots of fluids and consume plenty of vitamin-rich fruits and vegetables to support your immune system and help to keep the respiratory system clear and moist and prevent throat pain. H

What You Need to Know about Cataracts Most of us know at least one, if not more, family member or loved one who has been diagnosed with cataracts. To explain more, HEALTH meets with Dr. Nandini Sankaranarayanan, Cataract and Glaucoma Surgeon and Specialist Ophthalmologist to understand exactly what cataracts are and how it is treated.

July/Aug 2022

10

What it means

Cataract in layman terminology, tells Dr. Sankaranarayanan, can be described as a clouding of the natural crystalline lens of the eyes. “Some symptoms of cataracts include cloudy /blurred vision, glare, and/or increased sensitivity to light and double vision,” she says.

Age-related or genetic

While the majority of cataracts are age related, also referred to as senile cataract, Dr. Sankaranarayanan reveals that it can also be seen in infants as well. She advises that it is extremely important to remove this cataract as early as possible to make sure that the vision development is normal.

Latest treatment for cataracts The only way to treat cataracts is by surgically removing the cataractous lens and replacing it with an artificial Intra Ocular Lens(IOL) implant, she says. “This is done by a procedure called as phacoemulsification that uses high frequency ultrasound vibration energy to disintegrate the cataractous lens,” she says, which is a suture less procedure. Recent advances in the phacoemulsification technique is the use of a femtosecond laser. “Also, many premium IOLs are now available which can provide a glasses-free reading experience.”

The importance of treatment

Apart from this, sometimes not removing the cataract may cause it to rupture or liquefy within the eyes, which can trigger high eye

pressure or inflammation and lead to a painful eye.

Tips for a person who has undergone cataract surgery It is imperative to follow the instructions of the surgeon during the immediate postoperative period; which is usually in the form of applying the appropriate eye drops. Other general instructions include to avoid touching the eye and avoid upper body bathing for a few days.

Since cataract is a day care procedure, the patient can resume all the normal activities after surgery. If both eyes have cataracts, it is

important to treat this eye, also. as per the surgeon’s advice to experience the benefit of clear vision in both eyes. Once the cataract is removed, it does not recur, however, in some patients, there may be a development of after-cataract which is opacification of the capsule on which the artificial lens in placed. This may cause the patient to experience a blurring of the vision again. This is very easily treated by a laser procedure in the doctor’s office itself and vision becomes clear immediately. In conclusion, there is no restriction in activities advised after cataract surgery. In fact; the patient can enjoy routine activities even more due to the clear vision the surgery helps achieve. H

What are Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMD)? From clicking the jaw to suffering severe pain, temporomandibular joint disorders, also known as TMD can take a toll on our health, and in turn, hinder our daily life. Dr. Ahmed Moustafa Salloum, Associate Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Specialist of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery reveals key coping mechanisms to help.

TMD defined

The temporomandibular disorders are considered to be multifactorial disorders where many factors, either external or internal can share in the precipitating of such a disorder.

The most common causes of TMD

According to Dr. Salloum, some of the most common causes of TMD include: trauma to the jaw, joint or the muscles of the head and neck; an improper bite or a crowding of teeth; grinding or clenching of your teeth which puts too much pressure on the joint; arthritis in the joint; and stress, which can cause you to tighten

July/Aug 2022

12

the facial and jaw muscles.

The signs and symptoms

TMD is considered an annoying problem due to the long duration of the disorder along with the

occasional accompanying flare-ups. “Usually the attacks are related to stress, eating hard food, and/or trauma to the jaw,” he says. “TMD is presented with one or more of the following: a pain in and around the jaw

joint, constant or intermittent; headaches; ear aches; audible clicking or popping noises when opening and/or closing the mouth; pain that radiates through the neck and/or shoulders, limited range of jaw motion; and/or lock jaw.”

TMD treatment

TMD treatment should be undertaken from a knowledgeable oral and maxillofacial surgeon, points out Dr. Salloum, who will examine and diagnose the exact disorder, and recommend strategies to manage your discomfort and symptoms, as well as address the main cause of your problem. In terms

of the duration of TMD, he adds, “For most people, discomfort from the TMD disorders will eventually go away on its own, but it requires the proper treatment and proper adjustment of the main causative element.” In fact, the patient should understand that sometimes TMD is a long term problem that requires the following: modification of your lifestyle, minimize surrounding stresses, behavioral modification, and even physiotherapy as well as medicines including muscle relaxants and pain killers.

Coping mechanisms for TMD patients

Modify your lifestyle; incorporate sports or some regular form of exercise.

Minimize the surrounding stressful environment. Organize the use of smart devices and always maintain the proper posture of your neck. Avoid hard foods, including apples and carrots. Also avoid chewing gum and hard candies. Seek the help of a specialist to diagnose the exact cause of the TMD which is quite often concealed. H

Why Are So Many Women Getting Plantar Fasciitis? FROM A THROBBING PAIN IN THE LOWER END OF THE FOOT TO HARDLY BEING ABLE TO WALK; PLANTAR FACIITIS IS BECOMING INCREASINGLY COMMON, ESPECIALLY IN WOMEN AT YOUNGER AGES. DR. THOMAS NAU, CONSULTANT ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON INVESTIGATES THIS OFTEN PAINFUL AND DEBILITATING CONDITION.

July/Aug 2022

14

Warning signs and treatment

DR. THOMAS NAU

Defined

Plantar fasciitis is a common cause of heel pain, reveals Dr. Nau. “It is caused by an inflammation of the plantar fascia, which is a strong tissue on the bottom of our foot which connects the toes to the heel bone,” he says. “The cause of this condition is poorly understood however, there are certain risk factors such as age, certain type of exercises, and foot biomechanics which play a role such as flatfeet or a high arch, obesity, and also certain types of occupations that keep you on your feet all day.” Women are more likely to have it, the reason for this may be weight gain in pregnancy and wearing unsupportive shoes.

According to Dr. Nau, the early warning signs include classic pain on the bottom of the heel, especially after prolonged exercises or long time on your feet. “The treatment protocol involves, as the first line of treatment, the classic anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen or naproxen,” he says, “then, we prescribe a few sessions of physiotherapy where the therapist shows the exercises to stretch the plantar fascia and also to strengthen the muscles of the lower leg.” Some people benefit from orthotics from the shelf or better custom fit from a podiatrist. In very severe cases, also a walking boot or crutches may be suitable. If this does not give the right success, a series of injections can be tried, he says. “These injections are either anti-inflammatory or more modern treatments with regenerative agents such as hyaluronic acid or platelet-rich plasma.” These injections can be combined with extracorporeal shockwave therapy that has demonstrated to be effective in some cases, also. In very, very rare cases, even surgery may be necessary.

Changes in lifestyle

Usually, the symptoms with the aforementioned protocol can be controlled, reveals Dr. Nau. “In terms of lifestyle changes, aim towards reducing weight if you are overweight or maintaining a healthy weight,” he explains. “Wearing the right shoes may definitely help with good arch support and extra cushioning.” If you are exercising, proper warm up and stretching after the exercises are important. Also, adaptation to lowimpact sports such as swimming and bicycling may help as well. “In an acute episode, in addition to the medication, ice therapy can help reduce the pain and inflammation.”

Tips to Avoid Plantar Fasciitis

• Lifestyle modification by reducing weight if you are overweight or maintaining a healthy weight. • Wearing the right shoes with good arch support and extra cushioning. • Proper warm up and stretching before and after exercises. • Adaptation to low-impact sports such as swimming and bicycling. H

The Mediterranean Diet; Why is it So Good for Us? Still the top diet of 2022, the Mediterranean diet is still considered the most practical and sustainable diet. But what makes it so effective? Here, Fahmida Jafri, Dietician and Head of Nutrition reveals the facts.

AN EFFECTIVE DIET

The Mediterranean diet, explains Jafri, is a traditional way of eating for people residing in the Mediterranean. She elaborates, “The diet emphasizes on the consumption of fiber; healthy fats like MUFA and PUFA; quality proteins and antioxidant

July/Aug 2022

16

rich foods.” Essentially, the Mediterranean diet pattern also ensures clean eating with an array of plant-based choices. “Hence, the effectiveness and popularity of the Mediterranean diet is based on the positive health impact on individuals,” she says.

THE BEST DIET OF 2022 According to Jafri, the Mediterranean diet benefits people of different cultures and origins. “The reason is the raw choices and sources of food which are unanimously available throughout different countries,” she says, and also, it’s easy to

incorporate in different cuisines. “The main fact is that this diet ensures the inclusion of all macro and micronutrients required for a heathy lifestyle,” says Jafri, and it’s a dietary pattern which is easy to understand, follow, and incorporate in our daily lifestyle. “Moreover, apart from the regular sources of grains, proteins, fiber, and healthy fats; this diet sheds light on the functional food aspect as well, with the inclusion of herbs and spices which are proven to be effective as bio functional foods.”

THE HEALTH BENEFITS

Embracing a Mediterranean diet is all about making some simple and profound changes to your eating style, reveals Jafri. “The diet focuses on a high intake of fresh fruits and vegetables, a moderate consumption of whole grains, seafood, poultry, dairy, nuts, olive oil, with a low consumption of red meat, sweets and fats,” she explains, adding, “this pattern enables an individual to lower the bad cholesterol, helps to shed excessive weight, control inflammatory changes in the body, improves heart and brain function and lowers the risk of diabetes and hypertension.” The intake of saturated fats, trans fats, refined carbohydrates and processed foods becomes very low with this type of Mediterranean diet pattern. Hence, the benefits are enormous on an individual’s health.

EASY TO INCORPORATE INTO ANY LIFESTYLE The Mediterranean diet eating pattern can be incorporated into the lifestyle of most individuals, points out Jafri, particularly

senior citizens, cardiac patients, diabetics, to name a few. “The essence of this diet lies in healthy food choices within the caloric demands, portion control as per the patient’s nutritional needs as well as the targeted nutrition therapy,” she says. “The right balance of macro and micronutrients as per the individual’s nutrient needs and health condition is the key to attain health benefits through the Mediterranean eating style.”

EASY WAYS TO TRANSITION TO THIS DIET AS A LIFESTYLE

• Any change we make to our lifestyle can be done gradually and consistently. Replacing the unhealthy food sources to healthy ones should be the first step in embracing a Mediterranean diet lifestyle. Replace saturated fats to MUFA oils such as olive oil or walnut oil. • Make whole grains your staple. Introduce quinoa, buckwheat, barley or red

• •

rice in different dishes. Replace processed snacks with fresh fruits topped with flax seeds, salads, hummus with olive oil, Greek yoghurt or vegetable soups. Make vegetable salads and fruits a part of each main meal. Limit consumption of red meat and poultry to once a week and increase consumption of fatty fish and sea food to thrice a week. Designate two days a week as vegetarian days wherein legumes, beans and tofu are the main sources of proteins. Switch from breakfast butters to avocado spreads, from packed juices to coconut water, from fried chips to baked sweet potatoes and from desserts to fresh fruits. Moreover, the change starts from purchasing healthy items. Have a list ready when you shop. Do not stock your refrigerators with sugary foods and fatty foods. Make meal times as family times to enhance the change. Get more physically active. H

Start Running to Reduce Your

Work Related Stress Running and exercise in general, reduce stress hormones and stimulate the production of endorphins, also called the ‘happy hormones’, which together creates a mental uplift that not only helps a person relax, but also improves their mood. HEALTH speaks with David Mackenzie, Managing Director of the Mackenzie Jones Group specifically about running and how it can help alleviate your day-to-day stress.

The link between running and stress

There is a direct positive link between exercise and mental health overall, not specific to running per se, reveals Mackenzie. “The latest ASICS research proves that just 15:09 minutes of exercise is all it takes to begin experiencing a positive uplift, which demonstrates the big impact a small amount of movement can have,” he says. In terms of how often a person should partake in running, given they have permission from their physician, he adds, “It is generally understood that doing at least three or four days of exercise per week is beneficial. If you are starting out running, there is a great app called Couch to 5K that will take you from walking to running your first 5K non-stop. It’s how many passionate marathon and half-marathon runners I know started out.” July/Aug 2022

18

Different styles of running

Running takes all forms depending on your ability and experience, says Mackenzie. He advises, “Start doing short distances and run/walk, then set a goal of one kilometer non-stop and build from there.” Make sure you push yourself, but in the beginning make it manageable. The key is consistency, he says.

What makes running unique

According to Mackenzie, one of the benefits of running is you can do it outdoors and in a social group. He adds, “Both these factors are proven to improve mental wellbeing; we as human beings have evolved to hunt in nature, on foot and in small groups – our bodies reward us for this behavior. In fact, regular running in a group is one of the best ways to maintain a positive outlook.”

The best type of running

There is not a one size fits all answer, indicates Mackenzie. “It really depends on what you are aiming for,” he says, adding, “I don’t run without a training goal in mind. I train by running intervals at least four days per week; intervals help you get stronger and make your heart work more, so make you faster over time.” One thing he always advises is to enter races. “This gives you a goal and a target to improve on, plus the fun and excitement of running with a group of people is something that once you experience, you will want to do again and again.”

Tips to get motivated

Join a running group; there are multiple groups in Dubai: Dubai Creek Striders, 3F Striders, or the Abras. There are several free groups that will help you start and also meet other beginners.

Set a manageable goal and work towards it. In the beginning, it is always difficult keeping the consistency, but focus on regular small gains. Get a friend involved, it is always great to run with friends, especially people better than you. Get the right kit. Don’t go out and buy everything, but a good pair of shoes is essential. Get used to feeling uncomfortable: in the beginning, you may feel achy or out of breath, but being out of breath isn’t a sign to stop, it is your body getting more oxygen to your muscles. Enjoy yourself. Pick your favorite place, run and reward yourself afterwards with a coffee, treat or regular sports massage. You will be amazed how quickly you will improve and feel great. H

Emotional Acceptance:

Not Feeling OK is Perfectly OK

We have been indirectly taught by our social construction NOT to feel negative emotions. In fact, from a very young age, we get emotionally invalidated in so many ways until that becomes our norm to the point that we are told not to cry or not to get angry, which teaches us to avoid unpleasant feelings at any cost. To elaborate, Mai Elsayed, NextGen MENA Committee member and Clinical Hypnotherapist reveals how this can be detrimental for our emotional and mental wellness.

July/Aug 2022

20

What happens over time

According to Elsayed, over time, if we continue to ignore or supress our negative emotions, we get programmed to send our negative emotions to the subconscious mind where they get manifested into other forms. “We grow up to suppress what we truly feel, especially when it comes to emotions that make us seem weak or not in control,” she says, however, these repressions lead us to escape through unhealthy behaviors such as binge eating, self-harming and even other dangerous addictions. When we choose to repress our socially unaccepted feelings, we may develop psychosomatic illnesses such as fibromyalgia. “This leads us to walk in the route of medical treatments and medications without realizing that the cause of the illness is unexpressed emotions,” she explains.

Understanding the emotions

The good news, points out Elsayed, is that our ‘negative’ emotions are not negative at all. She explains, “This is just a label that our society has created to highlight that the feelings which make us feel uneasy are not good. But why would you want to feel something like pain, anger or sadness? Why would anyone want to go through a feeling that is unpleasant?” Essentially, we waste so much time trying to push these feelings out of our line of vision, only to find ourselves being trapped and stuck. We become insecure and over sensitive about the same exact thing that triggered these negative feelings. And then, Elsayed says

that we engage our inner critic in maladaptive ways to fulfil the denied feelings. “For example, when you experience the pain of going through a romantic break up, rather than facing these you choose to deny it,” she says, and this pushes the feeling further into your subconscious psyche. What that means is that the emotion is not gone, but instead it got stuck in your subconscious mind. Your inner critic will find ways to validate this feeling that got frozen in time through thoughts of being unworthy, not good enough, and so on. “Hence, increasing your insecurity about yourself and future relationships.”

Solutions and advice

Self-compassion is the answer, indicates Elsayed. She adds, “When you allow yourself to fully experience the so called ‘negative emotions’ you will enable yourself to face these feelings and get over them.” When you fully go through the experience, you break down the negativity and come out the other end stronger and sturdier. There is a reason why feelings like pain and sadness exist. This is our psyche’s way of telling us that something is not right. “Bearing witness to these feelings in compassion and acceptance will open the door to true healing and liberation from the weight of this negativity,” she says. “We need to accept our emotions and understand why they are there in the first place.” Fighting against them will only make them stronger. Therefore, it is wiser to respond to the emotional call and navigate our way through the feeling while remembering that not feeling OK is perfectly OK, she concludes. H

A Closer Look at

Emotional Eating Most of us have turned to food when we’re sad or stressed in efforts to comfort ourselves from uncomfortable feelings. And it’s not just during difficult times, but also when we felt like we needed to celebrate or reward ourselves for a job well done that we reach for high carb, high calorie foods. Known as emotional eating, it can become harder over time to recognize if we are physically hungry or if the hunger is emotional. To explain, Dr. Victoria Mountford, Clinical Psychologist & Joint Lead, Eating Disorder Service reveals the patterns of emotional eating and how to take control of it.

July/Aug 2022

22

A QUICK FIX

According to Dr. Mountford, when we experience intense emotions, particularly difficult emotions such as anxiety, sadness, loneliness or boredom, it’s natural to want to ease these. “Food – readily available and highly palatable - is a quick, and in the short-term, effective way to self-soothe and eating serves to reduce negative emotion,” she says, but is emotional eating only due to difficult emotions? She elaborates, “While the link between difficult emotions and emotional eating is well recognized, more recently researchers have explored the link between positive emotions and emotional eating.” It has been suggested that emotional eating linked to positive eating is an attempt to extend and enhance the positive mood. But we can also build up habits and eating can be associated with reward. So, for example, when we tell ourselves we ‘deserve’ or have ‘earned’ a favorite food, this food becomes associated as a ‘treat’, she says.

Common signs you might be emotionally eating Eating when you are not hungry or when you are full. Food can be the center point of many social events, it can teleport us into our childhood of carefree days and no stress, or it can soothe us as a constant comforting companion. If we use food

for any other reason than nourishment, we are engaging in emotional eating.

textures and appearance of your food, and thanking the food for nourishing your body.

Eating to calm or soothe yourself down when you feel sad or stressed. After a bad day at work or a fight with a friend, you reach out for the high carb food options as a way of coping with the stressful event. Eating to block out or distract yourself from difficult feelings such as loneliness, boredom, sadness, or anxiety. This is using food not as nourishment, but as distraction from the difficult feelings you might be experiencing.

2.

Eating certain foods as ‘rewards’ that you have to ‘earn.’ Using food as a reward or as a punishment undermines reading the inner cues of the body and thus, leads to unhealthy eating. Changing your eating habits when you have more stress in your life. The biological reason you overeat when stressed may be that persistent stress causes increased and on-going secretion of a hormone called cortisol into the bloodstream, and high blood levels of cortisol are linked to increased appetite. Unless alternative ways of stress are cultivated, this can become an unhealthy means of dealing with stress.

SOLVING THE PROBLEM OF EMOTIONAL EATING

1.

Engage in mindful eating: This can mean you check-in with yourself to see if you are hungry, considering what you are cooking or preparing, not eating on the go or while standing up, being engaged and present with your food when you are eating, considering the

Remove judgment from food: There are no good foods or bad foods. This reduces the risk that we see certain, highly desirable foods as items we can only have if we earn them. This makes it more likely that when we permit ourselves these foods, we will overindulge.

3.

Learn healthy emotional regulation: what strategies could you practice instead of eating? Consider other things that soothe you, for example, engaging your other senses. Go for a walk and notice nature – sounds, smells and sights. In the short-term, these strategies won’t work as quickly as eating and you will need to practice them. However, over time, developing alternative means of coping with negative emotions will improve both your physical and mental health.

4.

Speak to a psychologist: Emotional eating is not simply a matter of a person lacking selfdiscipline or needing to eat less. Learning the underlying causes of your emotional eating will help you build healthier practices.

5.

Remove temptation: Many times emotional eating has become a habit and we engage in it unconsciously and without consideration. If you know you have a go-to food that serves as your companion, do not bring it to your home and make it harder to access when you are experiencing difficult emotions. This way you will become increasingly aware of when you tend to emotionally eat. H

Why are younger people seeking out

plastic surgery these days?

With the surge of social media and the selfie culture, more and more younger people are seeking out plastic surgery in hopes of changing their appearance. HEALTH meets with Dr. Faisal Ameer, Consultant & Head, Division of Plastic Surgery and Clinical Assistant Professor who reveals the facts about this growing phenomena.

THE UNDERLYING REASONS AND THE ROLE OF PARENTS In an age of selfies and constant social media sharing, a growing number of teenagers are undergoing plastic surgery to alter their appearance, says Dr. Ameer. “Currently, teenagers account for about four percent of all cosmetic surgery procedures, with the most common procedures among teens being nose reshaping, male breast reduction and ear surgery,” he says, adding that adolescents also account for a small percentage of total non-surgical cosmetic procedures, such as laser hair removal, skin resurfacing, and Botox injections. Regarding the role of the parents, he strongly suggests that it is never advisable for a parent to suggest plastic

surgery. “The idea has to come from the teen,” he explains, as the parents may project their own experiences and want to protect their children from emotional harm. Also, parents must not openly reject a child’s request for a procedure as the child might be a subject of bullying and ridicule.

THE LINK TO SOCIAL MEDIA According to Dr. Ameer, today’s social media-obsessed culture has contributed dramatically to a rise in plastic surgery. “That being said, teenagers seek plastic surgery for a variety of reasons, ranging from addressing a health need to fixing a feature that has made them susceptible to bullying,” he says. “Teens tend to have plastic surgery to fit in with peers and

to look similar. Adults, he adds, on the other hand, tend to have plastic surgery to standout from others. “One reason many teens cite is that young people can be cruel, whether intentionally or not,” he explains, and a constant barrage of cruel remarks often drives teens to take surgical action.

UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS IN THIS AGE GROUP For the majority of teens seeking out plastic surgery at a young age, Dr. Ameer says that expectations are unrealistic. He elaborates, “Most of the information teens have about plastic surgery is sometimes only from social media and movies, which is not always true. Not every teenager seeking plastic surgery is well suited for an operation.” Teens must demonstrate emotional maturity and an understanding of the limitations of plastic surgery. Teens should have realistic expectations about plastic surgery and what it can do for them, he says. “In addition, certain milestones in growth and physical maturity must be achieved before undergoing plastic surgery.”

THE BIG QUESTION The big question remains: ‘is there a right age for plastic surgery?’ According to Dr. Ameer, guidelines for the most popular plastic surgery procedures in young individuals are as follows: Rhinoplasty: In children and teens with significant nasal deformities, he explains that nose reshaping may be recommended. “It is recommended that surgery not be performed until nasal growth is completed – typically age 15 to 16 in females and age 16 to 18 in males,” he says, but in some situations, such as a child with a cleft lip, a rhinoplasty may be performed at a younger age. Breast reduction: To alleviate back and neck pain, a breast

reduction is commonly performed on teen girls; however, Dr. Ameer points out that it’s important to ensure that surgery is performed after the patient has completed breast development, which typically occurs between 12 and 19 years of age.

Gynecomastia surgery: Breast enlargement can be a temporary problem in adolescent boys, but is sometimes treated by male breast reduction if it has not resolved in the early teen years, he says. Otoplasty: Surgery to correct ear deformities can be performed as young as age five, as this is when the ear is almost fully grown. Liposuction: Unless performed as part of a breast reduction surgery, Dr.Ameer advises that it is not recommended that a teenager undergo liposuction. Breast augmentation: Candidates with uncommon chest deformities or congenital breast asymmetry are generally the only cases in which breast augmentation is appropriate for a teenager. “In routine cases, it is not recommended to perform silicone breast augmentation in patients younger than 18 years of age.”

KNOWING THE RISKS BEFORE THE SURGERY Teens frequently gain self-esteem and confidence when their physical problems are corrected. However, Dr. Ameer adds that plastic surgery, like any other surgery, has its own set of risk factors. “In addition to procedure specific risk factors, teenagers must also understand, that during recovery, they might experience discomfort and temporary bruising and swelling resulting from a surgical procedure.”

FINAL ADVICE FOR TEENS PONDERING PLASTIC SURGERY Teenagers and parents must keep in mind that plastic surgery is real surgery, with great benefits, but also carries some risks. The young person must appreciate both the benefits and limitations of plastic surgery, avoiding unrealistic expectations about life changes that will occur as a result of the procedure. It is important to determine whether or not these patients are requesting surgery to satisfy their own interest or to meet the expectations of someone else, for example; a parent or friend. Any patient who is considering a plastic surgery procedure should consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon. H

EMPOWERING WOMEN:

EMIRATI TRIATHLETE ASMA AL JANAHI

HEALTH MEETS WITH ASMA AL JANAHI, EMIRATI TRIATHLETE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT HER INCREDIBLE JOURNEY AS THE FIRST EVER EMIRATI WOMAN TO EVER COMPLETE THE IRONMAN 70.3 FOUR TIMES AND MORE.

July/Aug 2022

28

About Asma and her achievements “I am a proud Emirati woman and I believe in creating a path for myself and for women around me. I am the first Emirati woman ever to finish the IRONMAN 70.3 four times and complete three IRONMAN Middle East races in a single season. Some of my IRONMAN accolades include being the first female UAE national and woman in the GCC to complete the races and coming first at the Abu Dhabi World Triathlon in 2019 amongst other accomplishments.”

Her mission for all women “My mission is to inspire other women and next generations to get into sports and make it an integral part of their life. I believe that in order to enjoy life, we must achieve and inspire others to do better. For that we need to keep a healthy body and a healthy mind. My personal motto is: It’s not speed, its aptitude…and everything is possible if you believe.”

Experience in sports “I have always been an active person. As a kid, it was a fun activity for me, I liked the playful competition and the power of sports to build camaraderie amongst your peers. I got really serious about sports about three years ago when I started participating in triathlons. This was when I learned to act and be a

committed athlete. I am still an amateur athlete, but I have insight into what it takes to be at the top. My motivations have changed, but I enjoy every bit of it.”

How she empowers other women “The best way to empower is to lead by example and to be open to answering people’s questions. It’s encouraging to see someone you can relate to. I try to do things that I’m passionate about and that in return empowers people around me to follow their dreams. Taking part in activities that are sports related opens up conversations that were thought to be closed for Emirati women. For example, being part of ASICS FrontRunner helps me to transfer my message to my community and beyond thanks to being part of a group of global runners that share a passion for inspiring others. ASICS believes in the mantra of #SoundMindSoundBody, and this is something I believe in, too.”

Movement and wellbeing “Movement and being active is a part of self-care, I believe. It helps me mentally and physically, where I can use my energy in the right place. It is an essential element that many people are missing these days. In order to achieve a better

life, working on physical health and being active is a key benefit of doing sports. The joy of new friendships, the coffee chats and learning processes, are all important for our overall well-being as humans.”

Asma’s training routine/fitness regime “I have everything planned in advance and a qualified coach overlooks the program for race preparation. Usually my day starts as early as 6am for the morning training session and then I head to work and do the evening session if I have one. It sounds hectic, but with time management everything is possible. Also, I don’t forget the recovery time, because it is important for the body, and for athletic performance, to rest as well as to train.”

Nutritional habits “I don’t restrict myself from enjoying food. I just work on some healthier habits and give myself a treat after a big training block or a race. I usually take care of my health and energy through whole foods and avoid things like deep fried food and junk food, most of the time. But it all starts with creating habits.” H

THE IMPORTANCE OF LEARNING

DECISION-MAKING FROM BIG DECISIONS TO SMALL DECISIONS; IN A WORLD SHAPED BY THE HUMAN TENDENCY OF INSTANT GRATIFICATION, IT’S BECOMING INCREASINGLY DIFFICULT TO MAKE DECISIONS. HEALTH MEETS WITH WARREN NEL, BUSINESS COACH AND MENTOR WHO REVEALS HOW WE CAN LEARN THE SKILL OF DECISION-MAKING AND WHY IT CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE.

July/Aug 2022

30

HOW IT WORKS Decision-making is hard, explains Nel. “It requires us to let go of something - some kind of certainty - and step into the unknown; and we humans don’t like that,” he says, and in a world shaped by the human tendency of instant gratification, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to make decisions.

WHY IT MATTERS According to Nel, our lives are made up of choices - and the quality of these choices determine the quality of our lives. But what if you don’t know, in any

given scenario, what the best decision is? It’s when faced with this dilemma that we tend to freeze and get stuck in analysis paralysis - and sometimes it’s tempting to feel that not making a decision, is the best option, he says. “The key to success is moving forward (even if it’s in the wrong direction), gaining momentum, failing, making adjustments along the way, and ultimately growing and becoming better.” Sometimes making a wrong decision is better than not making any decision at all. That can be tough and takes leadership. Leaders make a decision and then navigate it towards the best possible outcome.

DECISION MAKING IS A SKILL Decision-making is a skill, points out Nel, and developing it is much the same as developing your muscles in a gym. “The gym for decision-making is life - it’s a skill that can (and should) be developed by everyone,” he explains, a skill especially crucial for children to learn from as early on as possible. The bottom line is if you don’t use it, you lose it. “It’s the same with decision-making; if you fall into the trap of indecision and analysis paralyses, it becomes a habit, and eventually you become that person that always freezes when faced with difficult decisions,” he says, and someone like that can never lead their lives, let alone, anyone else.

TIPS TO HELP WITH DECISION-MAKING Take responsibility: embrace the fact that you must make decisions and that not making a decision is making one. And that sometimes making a decision in the wrong direction

is better than not making a decision at all.

Learn to pay the price: embrace the reality of trade-offs as a necessary part of life - know that you’re always sacrificing one thing in favor of another. The act of making decisions allows you the opportunity to grow in wisdom - to ultimately make better and better decisions. Establish strong values and a vision for your life - these act as a lens and become the filter through which we make decisions. The stronger your values and deeper your vision, the better your decision making capability

THE NEXT TIME YOU’RE FACED WITH A TOUGH CHOICE, DO A COSTBENEFIT ANALYSIS: 1. Define your core values and priorities. 2. List the costs and benefits of each of the available choices. 3. Consider each option in terms of your core values and priorities. 4. Make your choice, develop a simple strategy for execution (if necessary), and take ACTION (nothing changes until you do). 5. Evaluate your decision - it’s said that “experience is the best teacher”. Wrong - evaluated experience is. Few things help you grow and improve your decision-making ability than taking action and assessing your experience. Laying out the options and filtering them through the lens of your values, priorities, and the costs and benefits will help you gain clarity, increase personal ownership, and improve your confidence. Dining Out

A Pan-Asian family dining experience overlooking Dubai’s skyline, a vegan feast, and an authentic Argentinian celebratory meal in the midst of Downtown Dubai; here are our favorite dining venues to try this month.

Folia, The Four Seasons Resort Jumeirah Beach Every venue at The Four Seasons Jumeirah are always phenomenal and Folia is no exception, with a beautifully lit up courtyard space and lush greenery. Chef Matthew Kenney is the mastermind behind the menu with around 15 dishes. The starters included Kimchi pancakes with a heady stuffing made of cabbage and green herbs, served with a delectable ginger dressing. The mushroom bao was equally delicious, with hints of hoisin sauce and crunchy mushrooms. The Dukka avocado was a flavorful salad, with breaded spears of avocado, served with a tomato jam; and our favorite was the Watermelon Poke; with kale, marinated watermelon, mint, topped with a smattering of macadamia nuts, served with pomegranate ponzu sauce. The mushroom sliders really hit the mark while the vegan club sandwiches were tofu based, with crispy vegan bacon. Of the mains, my favorite was the mushroom gnocchi with

coconut chocolate cream atop a dates and cashew base.

The desserts are brilliant; we loved the Tahitian Vanilla Panna Cotta with maraschino cherries and sliced almonds and the Coconut Banana Cream tart with a macadamia crust which was light and refreshing. Our top favorite was the Chocolate Orange tart with orange cream; a heavily chocolaty creation with mild hints of orange infused into

Asado, The Palace Downtown Dubai A tribute to the culture and history of Argentina, Asado presents authentic Argentinian cuisine lovingly created from age-old recipes set in the heart of Dubai. Their Argentinean Grill offers premium meat cuts prepared on a ‘Parrilla’, an open grill in the middle of the venue. Add to this, the traditional music and live entertainment combined with the gorgeous views of the Dubai Fountains and The Burj Khalifa, this venue reflects Dubai’s architectural magnificence. To celebrate Argentina in the most authentic way possible, Asado invited us to sample their special menu just for the event. We were first served Locro, a warming stew. And while every region has its own variation, ours was a medley of pumpkin, beans, beef chorizo in a warming broth. We also loved their Pareja De Empanadas—with two variations; one spicy and one non-spicy. The Saltena version was filled with hand cut Argentinean beef, onion, capsicum, spring onion, boiled egg and seasoned with sweet paprika and cumin.

The other—Tucumana—was also encased with hand cut Argentinian beef, onion, raisins, chili, spring onion, and seasoned with sweet paprika and cumin. This platter was accompanied by a mildly spiced dipping sauce.

As Argentina is known globally for its high-quality beef, the main we tried was an Argentinan Black Angus striploin, served with a satisfying potato gratin with herbs and Parmesan cheese, with a sliver of carrot puree and grilled baby capsicum. We loved the flavors, especially when we added the accompanying Chimichurri sauce to it. As Argentina has milk and wheat in high production, the desserts normally follow in this theme. Our selection of desserts included Flan con Dulce

de Leche, which was really tempting, especially paired with the banana ice-cream. We also loved the bread pudding with raisins, and the cream caramel with Dulce de Leche and cream. Visit: Asado, The Palace Downtown Dubai; +971 4 428 7961 July/Aug 2022

Nonya Dubai, The Taj, JLT Stepping into Nonya is like stepping into multiple venues under one roof, with multiple private dining rooms, two terraces, a high energy room; and a spectacular view of Dubai’s stunning skyline. With a menu featuring classic dishes including beef rendang, Singaporean chili crabs and Singaporean laksa, Nonya is very new venue, bringing key Singaporean and Peranakan influences to its culinary offerings. We were served their signature dishes; from the starters, highlights included the soft chili crab, a melt-in-the-mouth soft crab which paired beautifully with the chili dipping sauce. And the truffle lotus stem--a sweet and sour, crunchy lotus, garnished with chili and spring onions. They also offer a variety of mocktails, and we tried Katang with berries and cream as well as Orchard Road with lemon, apple, and ginger ale. The second round of starters included their signature Wagyu Robota; a skewer of tender Wagyu served with peanut sauce. From their dim sum, we tucked into their Nonya non-vegetarian dim sum selection which included scallop and chicken siew mai, chicken Szechwan wonton, and tiger prawn har gao, served with a dipping sauce. From the mains, our favorites included the Nonya black cod—a steamed cod fillet served with vegetables and Nonya’s special sauce. The Assam prawns were mouth-watering, with the

slightly tangy tamarind paste. Their signature Nonya chicken curry was satisfying, and served with a baguette and potatoes; our unanimous favorite was the beef redang—braised beef tenderloin with galangal, coconut, and served with a beautiful pale blue pea flower rice.

Our desserts followed in the same theme and we tucked into my favorite mango sticky rice plus the mochi ice-cream. Visit: Nonya Dubai, The Taj, JLT +971 4 574 1111

DAILY FIBER INTAKE

Question: Is there such a thing as eating too much fiber? I have lately been feeling bloated and full. Can you please advise the right quantity of fiber to consume? Dr. Hasan Alogaily, Consultant Family

Medicine, responds, “In recent times, the recommended amount of dietary fiber has increased from 23 to 30 grams per day from a number of sources, as this has been shown to be consistently associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and colorectal cancer. Adding fiber to our diet can be associated with some side effects, such as abdominal bloating and excessive gas, so to reduce this effect we should increase our fiber intake slowly and ensure that we also consume an adequate amount of water, aiming for 1.5 to 2 liters daily. There is no significant benefit in consuming more than 30 grams of fiber per day, and consumption beyond this amount is more likely to result in side effects. It is also important to note however, that some people are unable to tolerate a high fiber diet. For example, it is not clear whether high dietary fiber is helpful for people with irritable bowel syndrome, for some it may be helpful, but in others it may worsen the symptoms.”

SUNBLOCK AND SPF

Question: I have been using an SPF 50 sunblock for the past few months, but I think it’s triggering breakouts. Is this suitable for maximum sun protection? Dr. Dalya Sager, Skincare and Laser Specialist

responds, “Sunblock usage is an absolute essential for summer, as ultraviolet rays increase your risk of skin cancer and skin aging. Sun damage starts to accumulate and eventually manifest in the skin as wrinkles, age spots; pigmentation; skin thinning and in some cases, cancer. The SPF (sun protection factor) number means how long it takes for the UV radiation to redden your skin versus how long it would take without sunscreen. So, for an SPF 70, it would take 70 times longer until the skin burns. There two types of sunblock, water basedwhich is easily absorbed into the skin and can be washed off easily; and oil based- which is waterproof and gives protection while in the water. Many dermatologists recommend the minimum SPF that should be used on the face is SPF 30 and it should be reapplied every two hours. Usually the higher the SPF, the thicker the consistency. So as a skin specialist, I recommend a water based SPF 30 with frequent application on the face and an oil based SPF 70 on the body along with regular application, especially for those who participate in outdoor activities, as the product may wear off due to sweating, swimming, and friction.”

ACHING AND BLEEDING GUMS WHILE BRUSHING Question: I am a 45-year-old woman and recently noticed that my gums ache when I brush. Also, my gums are bleeding. What could this be? Dr. Aparna Pandey, Specialist Periodontist

responds, “Bleeding gums on brushing is one of the earliest and common signs of gums inflammation called gingivitis. The bleeding may be associated with incorrect brushing technique or inflamed gums. A sense of discomfort, soreness or aching gums also represent gums inflammation which may have extended to deeper supporting structures around the teeth. The symptoms coincide with the presence of soft debris, plaque or tartar on the visible or in-between teeth surfaces. The frequency and severity of the bleeding gums and soreness may vary however, both need professional advice and management. Some over the counter mouthwashes and medication may resolve the symptoms for a while, but the disease progression continues. An early dental consultation is recommended, wherein you might be advised to undergo professional teeth cleaning or advanced dental prophylaxis procedures. You will also be counselled about instructions pertaining to your oral home care routine, which will help to maintain good oral health in long term. So visit us to get your healthy, carefree smile back.”
