Whether it’s maintaining routines or reinforcing life skills while carving out metime, maintaining a balanced and harmonious family life requires thoughtful planning and effort. HEALTH reveals key strategies to help you uphold individual routines while creating space for family bonding.

How to maintain the perfect work–life balance to maintain the perfect work–life balance

And so, it’s time to return to school; books readied, bags packed, and homework assignments completed. It’s also time to say goodbye to the laissez-faire attitude of the summer and welcome a packed, robust routine.

A fair division of labor works

For Nina Peckit, a Dubai-based Indian mom, the balance remains a mystery. She said: “I have a sevenyear-old daughter Lucy, and still wonder sometimes if I have found the ideal balance. Over the years, I’ve learned to ditch my sense of guilt. I think it’s okay not to be able to give everything 100 percent all the time. There are days when I am too stressed on the work front and home life suffers for it – and it’s okay. My husband and I divide most of our daily chores and child duties. So, if I am driving my daughter to school, my husband will take her for the swimming lessons in the evening. If I am doing the cooking and laundry, my husband will assist Lucy, in learning math skills… this is the most important kind of balance in my opinion – a fair division of labor,” explains Nina.

Nina thinks she learnt many lessons during the pandemic about taking breaks. “After suffering a burnout

How can you apply the lessons from summer and ensure you find valuable personal time amidst a busy day? HEALTH asked parents and experts how one can maintain that fine balance and here’s what they had to say. Balance is all about moderation, working out a delicate equation between home and workplace. The summer months gave families a chance to overindulge in holidays, eating out, hobby pursuits where working moms and dad probably

synced vacations with kid’s holidays. That tilted the balance, and dads and moms who have to report back to work, need their metime, even while they divide the rest of the hours between completing assignments on deadline and also managing to attend their child’s football, music, gaming sessions, parent-teachers meets and supervising homework. A tall order, that can be sorted out with good advice and tweaks.

during the pandemic years, I now try to set aside an hour every day just for myself – working out, meditating, binge-watching on Netflix, pampering myself – this is

often after my daughter’s bedtime.” What’s also helped, she adds is the realization that “discipline is also key to finding a sense of calm and equilibrium.”

Prioritize and organize time schedules

Jericho Dizon, a Filipino expat in Dubai and dad of one, believes balance is just a matter of prioritizing things: “As a parent and a full-time employee,

things are never easy when it comes to balancing your priorities. Not everything can be important, but everything can be divided into a certain given time. As an adult, you are constantly switching your attention from one priority to another, and it’s always best to divide and set limits. Always remember that the world won’t stop if you pause work and dedicate more quality time to your family,” says Jericho

In short, efficient time management can help you be the best version of you, for you and for your family. The key then is to begin with a plan.

Carry the summer’s lessons forward

How challenging is it for a child to get back to the rigid classroom ethos? After a summer break full of fun and frolic, it is fairly tough to make that transition. This entails recognizing the significant lessons that should be retained from the

summer holidays. There are certain life-skills we would like to instill in our kids, says UAE-based life coach Wafa Khan, “Like getting along with siblings and learning to resolve conflicts, engaging in social events and practicing kindness, time management, etc.” Summer break was perfect for introducing these

skills, but now it’s time to reinforce the message. “These values if instilled well into children can always be practiced throughout the year,” she said.

One of the most important things we teach kids during summer break is about rights and duties. Khan elaborates, “During the summer break, I usually have family meetings with children where we discuss what to do and when to do. Once it’s planned, we all own the plan and respect it. Also, they have the sense of responsibility to handle what they have been asked for and how to manage the day on their own will.”

Once school re-opens, carry the responsibility forward by:

1. Getting children involved in planning the extra-activities of the week,

2. Day-to-day operations of packing bags,

3. Discussing meal plans,

4. Give them the onus of their own clothes, games, toys, etc.

By having them take these lessons forward, parents can enjoy some wellearned ‘me-time’ “It’s surprising how well children cooperate when they are given responsibility,” say Khan.

Take a step-bystep approach and plan well

As we transition from a period with large chunks of free time to one of more controlled activities, it’s important to remember to begin setting routines gradually a few days before the actual end-of-holidays, say the experts.

Bene Katabua, Educational Psychologist at Intercare Health Center in Abu Dhabi, says take a step-by-step approach to the return to school. Begin with a slow return to steady life at least two weeks before school reopens. “Transitioning from vacation mode to school routines can be done gradually. Parents can start to reintroduce routines such as regular bedtimes and waking times, meal schedules, reading periods, etc. before school starts. This gradual introduction helps them get back into the rhythm of school routine, rather than having to adapt to the sudden change,” she says.

Secondly, keep communication channels open so you can pick up on any growing aversions or

issues. “Open communication is key to help children prepare for any transitions. It’s helpful to encourage discussions on what to expect, such as a change of teachers or schedule, friends, etc. Children can use this time to communicate their own feelings, and have them validated, so that parents can help them emotionally regulate,” explains Katabua.

It can be quite awkward coming face to face with friends, months after a break. Parents can help their children find ways to fix these

in mind your child’s developmental stages, their strengths and weaknesses, as well as areas where they may need support and encouragement.”

And just as important is a parent’s help to revisit educational lessons. “Where possible, refresh academic skills. After a long break, children and adolescents would benefit from revising some old materials before starting the new school year. This could be practicing math problems, engaging in apps for learning, etc.,” said Katabua.

fissures in friendship. Katabua added: “Find ways to help the child (re)connect with classmates. This encourages social engagement and peer relationships, which generally help children feel more comfortable and supported in the school environment.”

Even with friends, however, readjusting to school may not be so easy. So, says Katabua, “Parents are encouraged to set realistic expectations, it’s important to keep

Finally, it’s the parent’s perspective that most influences a child. “Parents are encouraged to cultivate a positive mindset about school. Encourage a positive attitude, visualizing what they can look forward toreuniting with friends, picking up on hobbies, exciting aspects of learning and and so on,” concluded Katabua.

Restore a fitness regimen

Being a parent is a full-time job and one that leaves not much time to take care of personal goals such as being on a fitness path.

UAE-based personal trainer and mom-of-two Gemma Owens offers a quick work-out for even the most swamped parent.

Cat and cow pose: Inhale as you lower the head and drop the lower back. Exhale, tuck the chin, push through hands, and curve the upper back.

Dead bugs. Engage core, exhale and lower opposite arm and leg. Ensure the back stays strong and fixed to the floor.

Birddog: Exhale and extend the opposite arm and leg. The thumb points up. Squeeze your bum

once you’ve extended the leg as much as you can. Keep hips steady.

Floor press: Keep your feet under the knees. Engage your core. Knuckles face the ceiling. Drive weights up in line with the chest.

Curtsy lunge: Shoulders back and down, weight in each hand (optional). Take leg back and across, drive through front heel and engage glutes.

Jump squat: Go as low as you feel comfortable into a squat, jump up and land softly with knees bent. Or do body weight squats if jumping is too much.

Romanian deadlift: Push hip back. Keep weights/water bottles close to legs and knees soft, not bent. You should feel hamstrings

parents needed to keep their self-development and me-time on top priority even while regulating their child’s life “It is great when you accomplish everything on your to-do list, but if you are not taking some time for yourself, you’ll burn out before the first month of school is over.” Here are her top tips for how to maintain that precarious balance.

Time management: Fit in time for your partner, fitness and time for friends every week.

Make a routine: Look at what’s feasible and what isn’t, and then stick to that routine.

Buy supplies in bulk: Buy all the school supplies that your

children will need. There’s nothing worse than trying to get organized after school has started. Having a dependable schedule can help kids do well in school and help you do well at your job.

Parenthood can be tricky at the best of times and more so when school kicks- off, after relaxed vacation days, but that doesn’t make it impossible to achieve. With a little help of routine, discipline and – let’s face it –willpower, you can achieve the dream, the perfect balance.

A balancing act

Being a renowned gynecologist, laparoscopic surgeon and mother of two, managing an active outdoor sports life and achieving milestones on all fronts is a tough balancing act.

For Dr. Kiran, an eminent UK Certified Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Prime Hospital, it is as important to excel at her profession as it is to scale mountains such as Mt Kilimanjaro and trek to Everest Base Camp.

“Life is all about living in the moment and being there wholeheartedly and enjoying every moment. Despite putting in a lot of dedication to work and family I have always set aside time for just me to do things I love be it mountain climbing, ramp working or kathak or belly dancing .... to name a few

Of course, having supportive family, friends and colleagues goes a long way in achieving work life balance for a working woman especially a busy doctor,” said Dr Usha Kiran as she shared her vision on her juggling, multi-tasking act.

1. No one aspect of

life can be fulfilling

It is extremely important to understand that achievements in any one single aspect of life, be it personal, professional, or family, however great they are, cannot bring about fulfillment.

I decided to curtail my busy career to be able to give enough time to other aspects which makes me happy and content. There is no fear of missing out.

2. Prioritizing things

There are so many things to do but only 24 hours a day. Trying to achieve more by going beyond your available time and resources leads to stress and frustration. Make a list of all the things you would like to do in life. Edit, edit and reedit the list, till you reach a point where you feel that these are the things that you would not miss doing in this life. Then prioritize them based on

ability, resources, and time so you have a list of things to be done this week, this month, this year and so on.

3. Time management

Allocating specific times and hours to each section of your life and being there in the present moment is an art. My motto is ‘ I do what I can do’ which keeps me relaxed and lets me enjoy what I do.

4. The art of delegation:

The more capable one is, there is a reduced tendency to delegate! Remember, you are not a superwoman and there is help around if you ask for it. This will let you focus quality time on what really matters.

5. Personal wellbeing

Don’t forget yourself. Selfishly

Selfless is the moto. Make sure you invest enough time and energy in yourself. H

10Facts and Myths about Pregnancy

Do your feet grow during pregnancy? Does your heart? Busting some myths and conceding to some facts that every first-time mother must know.

cry into a series of body motionsextending the tongue, coordinating complex breathing efforts, opening the jaw, moving the mouth, chin quivering and swallowing – all of which was observed in babies over 20 weeks old!

3. Fact: Your feet can ‘grow’

Nurturing human life in your womb is bound to bring about some significant physiological changes. Over a ninemonth period as the fetus grows from cell to cell, gaining limbs and developing complex systems of health, some weird and wonderful things occur. Several studies and specialists in women’s health help point out facts and dispel myths that surround pregnancy.

1. Fact:

Your heart grows

Your heart pumps between 30 and 50 per cent more blood for your growing baby – so your heart rate increases and with it, so does the size of your heart. Fortunately, once the baby is born, the size should go back to normal.

2. Fact:

Babies cry in the womb

They do. After a 2005 study conducted in New Zealand, researchers released an ultrasound video of what they said was a crying baby. But it’s not like you can hear an in-utero child. It all boils down to what constitutes a crying baby. Researchers broke down the

No, you aren’t imagining that snug shoe; your feet have probably grown a bit as your pregnancy has progressed. The ligaments in your feet tend to loosen up a bit during pregnancy, causing you to go up a half – or full – shoe size.

4. Myth: Morning sickness only happens in the morning

The nausea may begin in the morning and get better as the day progresses, but it could also last all day long. That is because gynecologists attribute this condition to raised levels of the pregnancy hormone – human chorionic gonadotropin. If you can’t keep food or drink down all day long, however, see a doctor for you might have a case of hyperemesis gravidarum or severe prolonged vomiting during pregnancy, which can be dangerous if not monitored.

5. Myth: You can’t sleep on your right side if you are pregnant

It may be a better idea to sleep on your left side while pregnant as it facilitates blood flow to your vital

organs and to the baby, but that’s not to say short periods on the other side are not allowed. Sleeping on the left side also lowers the odds of swelling in the ankles and legs.

6. Myth: You can’t exercise

It’ll keep you limber, boost your mood, and keep your spirits up. All things equal, you should be able to continue to do most of the exercises you did before pregnancy – at least at first. You may be asked to slow down as the pregnancy goes on or in case of complications. In fact, most doctors will advise you to be active, starting with a 30-minute gentle walk if you aren’t used to it.

7. Myth:

Your baby must arrive on their due date

Due dates are estimates but not lines drawn in stone; your child may appear before or after ‘D’ date. If your child is born before 37 weeks of gestation, it’s called a preterm birth and may need some extra care. Many doctors prefer to induce labor pains if the pregnancy is at the 40-week mark as this reduces several risks including chances of a stillbirth and the mother developing high blood pressure.

8. Myth:

There is only one birth position

Labor is a tough time in anyone’s life, but we’ve also been conditioned by TV and movies to accept only

12 Aug/Sep 2023
Dr. Prgati Grover Specialist Obstetrics & Gynecology Prime Medical Center - Dubai

one type of birth position – lying down. However, trained doulas and health professionals can help you understand and try the different positions – on all fours, squatting, lying on your side – that work best for you.

9. Myth: All bleeding during the first trimester means a miscarriage

While copious amounts of blood loss at any point of a pregnancy is scary, women often see spotting in the first trimester – it’s usually nothing to worry about. About 20 to 40 percent of women experience vaginal bleeding in the first three months. However, one is recommended to see their doctor and address the issue if it should happen.

10. Myth: You must be happy because you’ve just given birth

The biggest misnomer for many women is the term ‘blissful mum’. In fact, the period after birth sees so many hormonal changes – not to mention adjustment to a new reality, one with a frequently crying and demanding child –it can be distressing for many women. Many women can feel low and anxious for the first two weeks after childbirth. However, if the feeling persists well into the fourth trimester, it may be headed into post-partum depression, and one should seek professional help. One in 10 women will experience PPD after giving birth, points out US-based Postpartum Depression. org., and it can last anywhere from three to six months. H

NURSERY British Orchard

appreciate the emotions of their peers and educators, nurturing both animals and plants, and embracing their roles as conscious global citizens, children build strong relationships and develop empathy. This makes them role models for compassion and wisdom and helps them succeed in their future endeavours.

As the days grow shorter and the air takes on a faint crispness, there's an undeniable feeling of excitement and trepidation in the hearts of parents whose little ones are about to embark on a new adventure—starting Nursery. It's a bittersweet moment, watching them take those small, unsure steps away from the safety of our arms, but also witnessing the blossoming of their independence and curiosity. It's a milestone that tugs at the heartstrings, reminding us that time waits for no one. As they don their tiny backpacks and head out into this brave new world, we can't help but marvel at the incredible individuals they are becoming.

Here are 10 handy tips from Dr Vandana Gandhi, CEO and founder of British Orchard Nursery - UAE's largest nursery chain, who has personally overseen the transition of thousands of kids from home to nursery turf.

As parents, educators, and caregivers, we hold the power to shape the future of our children. Choosing high-quality nurseries with modern child-led curriculum and inclusiveness must be the key goal of every parent. Each child is unique, and the aim should be to ensure that they blossom into role models in school and life.

Research proves that 0-6 years is the crucial age in a person’s life where the brain development is at its highest. By focusing on below essential etiquette tips, parents and preschool teachers can ensure a wholesome partnership in developing the foundation years, which are the most crucial phase in a person’s life.

1. Respect and Kindness

Teaching children to treat others with respect and kindness is important in fostering a positive environment. By encouraging them to recognize and

2. Listening Skills

Active listening skills begin at home and are essential for effective communication and learning. By teaching young minds to listen attentively to others, follow instructions and think critically, and engage in meaningful conversations, we empower them to excel academically and socially, becoming valued participants in any classroom or group setting.

3. Responsible Behaviour

Encouraging a sense of accountability and organization in children from a young age allows them to be responsible and they are more likely to excel academically and become dependable and trustworthy individuals, setting the foundation for success in their educational journey and beyond. As educators, we further motivate children in preschools to take care of their belongings and classroom materials. Programs such as "Clean-Up Time" and accountable activities teach children the significance of tidying up and valuing their settings.

4. Positive Communication

Helping young ones express their feelings and emotions constructively enables them to build strong interpersonal skills. Children who learn positive

communication at home and school become effective team players, resolving conflicts amicably and creating an atmosphere of harmony and understanding, which makes them exemplary leaders in their social circles. Moreover, qualified nurseries conduct programs like role-play activities to enhance emotional intelligence.

5. Punctuality

Instilling the value of punctuality sets the stage for a disciplined and organized approach to life. Children who arrive on time for school and activities develop a sense of reliability and time management, traits that are highly valued in any educational or professional setting.

6. Personal Hygiene

Educating children on personal hygiene, such as handwashing and covering their mouths when sneezing or coughing, is essential. This not only promotes good health but also instils a sense of responsibility for their wellbeing and that of others. Children who practice good hygiene from a young age develop self-awareness and consideration for the health of their peers and the wider community.

7. Sharing is Caring

Emphasizing the importance of sharing not only nurtures teamwork and cooperation but also lays the groundwork for empathy and social and emotional intelligence. They learn to share and recognize the needs of others and develop a sense of responsibility towards their peers and community, setting them to be

considerate individuals' lifelong.

8. Eating Mindfully

Cultivating good table manners from an early age imparts respect for communal spaces and teaches children the importance of displaying courteous behaviour in social settings. Conscious eating is also crucial to health and family wellbeing. Eating with gadgets and tablets takes away the importance of family time and respect for food and people around. These habits go a long way in shaping the individuality of children and success in life.

9. Resilience and Perseverance

Encourage children to embrace challenges and develop a ‘ Bounce Back' and ' Never give up' attitude. Through our inclusive and supportive learning environment at homes and preschools, children are further empowered to tackle obstacles with determination and grace. Children who learn resilience and perseverance from the start are more likely to face hardships confidently, never shying away from trying new things, and

becoming strong leaders who inspire others through their perseverance.

10. Gratitude

This is one of the most important pillars for all. Instilling a sense of mindfulness in young children nurtures appreciation for the opportunities they have. Mindfulness programs, 'Feelings Finder' and 'Calm Corners 'at preschools help children further develop EQ. Children who practice gratitude grow up to be humble and appreciative individuals, capable of recognizing the contributions of others and always lending a helping hand to those in need. The power of prayers, togetherness of family, siblings, and friends is key for the wellbeing of both families and society. H

The journey has just begun, and with our further guidance and support at preschools, they will undoubtedly grow into exemplary role models, enriching the world with their unique contributions. May they flourish and thrive, spreading love and positivity, lighting up the path for generations to come.

Collagen, the Elixir of Life

Healthier hair, rejuvenated skin, stronger nails and bones – these are eventually only side benefits of consuming AUROMEDA Collagen products. The main benefit is delaying the aging from the inside and hence supporting the beauty and vitality to glow from the inside out.

What is collagen and how does it work?

Collagen is a powerful, natural structural protein that is the main component of the connective tissues that make up several parts of the body, including tendons, ligaments, skin and muscles. Collagen has many important functions, including providing structure to your skin and strengthening your bones. Currently, we know at least 27 different types of collagen. They are designated I - XXVII. The four most common include:

If you are feeling tired and down and you are noticing the quality of your skin, hair and nails is decreasing and you are missing overall glow and vitality you desire to have, then you are on the quest for the solution. Filled with the goodness of the right amino acids, vitamins and minerals, these supplements work immediately to restore the reserves of collagen in your body and support any existing health problems, ranging from joint pain to gut health.

Type I the most common and abundant type found in all connective tissues of the human body is responsible for maintaining the elasticity and firmness of our skin.

Type II found in joints and intervertebral discs of the human body helps to cushion and protect our joints, reducing friction and preventing damage.

is particularly important for maintaining the structure and elasticity of our blood vessels and ensuring proper circulation throughout the body.

Type IV as part of the kidney, inner ear and lens of the eye.

The role of collagen is to help form the structure of our skin, bones, cartilage and muscles to help the tissues be more flexible. Collagen is the essential protein in the skin component known as the extracellular matrix, which gives the skin much of its overall structure and is largely responsible for the skin’s smooth and youthful appearance. Since collagen is a protein, it is very similar to

Collagen contains a combination of amino acids that play a crucial role in maintaining the health and elasticity of skin, joints and connective tissues. As one grows older, the production of collagen naturally declines, leading to wear and tear of this structure. Our bones, skin tissue, hair and other cells where collagen reduces consequently show signs of aging. Choosing the right kind of collagen supplement to replenish this loss is crucial.

What Zuzana Kapova – the founder and visionary of AUROMEDA - says about the collagen.

other proteins in the body in that it needs to be replaced, either through a balanced diet or nutritional supplements. Collagen supplements are usually in powder form. These are often referred to as hydrolyzed collagen, collagen hydrolysate or collagen peptides. Hydrolyzed collagen is collagen that has been broken down into collagen peptides by the process of hydrolysis. All collagen supplements have been hydrolyzed to some extent. These are often also called collagen hydrolysates. While collagen peptides are collagen longer chains completely broken down into digestible short chains of amino acid chains, also known as peptides.

Zuzana Kapova, founder of the AUROMEDA brand, is committed to helping you find the ideal collagen that is closest to its natural molecular structure and can replenish this loss. When she was younger, interest in the human body led Zuzana to work with pharmaceutical companies. She has been in the field for the past 20 years. First as the part of the big corporates and later building her own entrepreneurship in trading pharmaceuticals and food supplements in Europe. She became the master in the field. However,

17 Aug/Sep 2023

doing business “on a large scale” took a toll on her health and Zuzana began to devote herself to a healthy lifestyle and self-care. In doing so, she realized there was a need for the high-quality nutritional supplements in the market. And that inspired her to establish AUROMEDA brand. The brand that focuses on the superior range of nutraceuticals is now heading from Europe, Slovakia to the UAE.

The main line of the AUROMEDA products is the premium quality collagen line. Zuzana explains, “As early as in our twenties, the depletion of the naturally occurring collagen in our body begins. As this happens, we slowly tend to experience aging. The loss of dewy plumpness of our skin, the appearance of lines, creases and wrinkles, the wear and tear of our joints and other tissues triggered by this loss at a cellular level can be delayed by replenishing the body with the right kind of collagen.”

She continues, “AUROMEDA selects high quality marine collagen to formulate the range of collagen products enriched with the variety of the top quality minerals and vitamins and other ingredients that address the anti-aging and health needs of the human body. To produce our products, we use exclusively highquality collagen peptides from fish from France. We source it from one of the best collagen producers in the world; they have more than 100 years of tradition to back them.”

While there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, understanding the factors involved can help you make an informed decision. We can choose to take collagen supplements as signs of aging appear, usually by early thirties. However, this doesn’t mean that people in their early 20s cannot take collagen supplements. Factors such as genetics, lifestyle and overall health also play a role.

“To determine the best time to start taking suitable AUROMEDA collagen supplements, it’s advisable to consult a healthcare professional, who can assess one’s individual needs, medical history, and underlying health conditions”, advises Zuzana. “That is why AUROMEDA closely co-operates with doctors and clinics in UAE.” H

Making Sense

A skin rejuvenation and anti-aging five-step skin care routine with Korean products that can reverse aging and wrinkles. Read on to learn more.

Our skin is the largest sense organ of our body, and the facial skin is of particular importance as it is a quick give away of our age with progressive wear and tear. The secret anti-aging formulation of Korean skin care products is well known.

Simple skin care routines using these sensible products can help you push back the clock on aging. The power of fermentation, water, natural exfoliants, nutritive serums, moisturizing day and night creams and herbal face masks packed with the power of rejuvenation can erase wrinkles and turn back the clock. You needn’t rob a bank to look youthful, says Alefiyah Johar, co-founder of FC Beauty and MD of Missha Middle East, a cosmetic and skin care distributor, as well as partner at Fakhree Al Hindi Group, in Dubai.

More clarity on skincare

“There is a lot of misinformation around skin care. A proper understanding of your skin

type, a regular regimen to clean, tone, exfoliate, moisturize, and pamper your skin with sensible products can make a world of a difference to one’s skin. It’s all about care nd consistency in maintenance of your skin. No one knows it better than the Koreans,” explained Alefiyah.

Their family business Fakhree Al Hindi near Deira Gold Souq is over half a century old. And FC Beauty, their wholesale cosmetic section that Alefiyah runs, was added nearly 8 years ago, and became an instant hit.

Focusing on the highly acclaimed Korean beauty industry, Alefiyah adds, “The Korean skin care industry has gained international acclaim for its commitment to achieving flawless and youthful skin. Among the various skincare routines available, their 5-step skincare routine stands out as one of the most effective methods to combat signs of aging. Incorporating both time-tested techniques and cutting-edge formulations,

renowned Korean beauty brands Missha and A’pieu offer an array of best-selling products that can help you achieve a more youthful and radiant complexion.”

Let’s explore this skin care regimen.

Five simple steps for youthful skin

Step 1

Double Cleansing

Double cleansing is always the first step of any Korean skincare routine. Begin with A’pieu’s Calendula

Cleansing Oil Pore Melting, a lightweight and nourishing formula that effortlessly eliminates makeup, dirt, and accumulated impurities from the skin.

Gently massage the oil onto your dry face, emulsify it with water to create a milky texture, and rinse thoroughly. Follow up with Missha’s Super Aqua Ultra Hyalron foaming cleanser, an effective yet gentle cleanser that deeply purifies the skin without compromising its essential moisture. The dynamic duo leaves your skin clean, soft, and perfectly prepped for the subsequent steps.

Step 2

Toning and Preparing

After cleansing, the next vital step is restoring your skin’s pH balance that helps prepare it for optimal product absorption. Missha’s Bee Pollen

Renew Ampoule Skin Toner, a beloved cult favourite, works wonders by revitalizing the skin

and repairing damaged skin cells. This luxurious toner delivers a burst of hydration, fostering a more even complexion. Gently pat the toner onto your face using your hands or a cotton pad to ensure even distribution and maximum benefit.

Step 3

Essence for Nourishment

At the heart of Korean skincare lies essence. Missha’s Time Revolution, the First Treatment Essence 5X, is truly a holy grail product. Enriched with fermented yeast extract and niacinamide, this essence elevates the skin’s natural cell turnover, brightens the overall complexion, and minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Applying a few drops to your fingertips, gently pat the essence into your skin, allowing its potent nutrients to penetrate deeply and rejuvenate your skin from within.

Step 4

Targeted Treatment

To effectively combat the signs of aging, Missha’s Bee Pollen Renew Ampouler is a true game-changer. This concentrated serum is specifically designed to fortify the skin barrier and stimulate collagen production. With continued use, it significantly improves skin elasticity, reduces the appearance of wrinkles, and imparts a plump, youthful glow. Gently massage the ampoule onto your face and neck, paying extra attention to areas prone to fine lines and dryness

for remarkable results.

Step 5 Moisturizing and Sun Protection

Hydration is paramount for maintaining youthful skin, making Missha’s Time Revolution

Artemisia Ampoule

Cream a musthave in your skincare routine. This exceptional moisturizer is enriched with double-fermented artemisia extract, delivering intense hydration and soothing properties that alleviate irritation and redness. Generously massage the cream onto your face and neck, ensuring the delicate eye area is well-nourished as well.

During daytime, complete your routine with an essential step for anti-aging sun protection. Shield your skin from harmful UV rays with Missha’s All-Around Safe Block Cotton Sun SPF50+/ PA+++, a broad-spectrum sunscreen that effectively prevents premature aging. Harness the power of the exceptional skincare formulations from Missha and A’pieu and embrace the Korean philosophy for timeless beauty for healthy, glowing skin. H

Help! My Child has Lice!

We’ve all been there – it begins with an itch and before you know it you’ve got a lice infestation on your hands. As schools start their new academic year, mothers begin to worry about hair hygiene. But what exactly is a louse, how does it spread and what’s the cure for the itch?

What is a louse?

Pale and grey, the Pediculus

Humanus Capitis is a tiny sixlegged bug that lives on the scalp and feeds on blood. And it works in hordes. All of 2-3mm in length, the, size of a single cumin seed, the trouble begins when you have not one louse but hundreds of lice crawling through your tresses.

What is a nit?

When lice lay eggs, these eggs and shell casings are called nits. Lice like to lay their eggs close to the scalp and these eggs are usually yellow or white in colour. Tiny, these nits are often confused with dandruff.

The life cycle of head lice

As Paula Bianchi, a resident of Dubai, prepares for her two daughters to begin the new school term, worries about her daughters getting back home with a lice infestation. Bianchi who is determined to have a lice-free year this year, explains, “Last year, I had a real challenge on my hands, getting their heads free of lice. This year, I am talking to the school to start a support group for all mothers, and we will work towards having a lice free ethos by taking steps to eliminate this menace completely.”

While a louse will die in a day without a supply of blood, with it, it will last about 28 days. There are three phases of this cycle: nit, nymph, and adult.

Nits These eggs, usually nestled between 4 to 6mm from the scalp, hatch in 7 to 12 days.

Nymph For the next 9 to 12 days, the lice will grow.

Louse As an adult, a female louse can lay up to 10 eggs a day.

24 Aug/Sep 2023

How do head lice spread?

Through contact. Lice cannot hop or fly, but they will upon contact crawl from one head to another. In rare cases, they may also spread by sharing infected items such as combs and hats.

Who is most at risk?

Young school children are most at risk at they often play closely together and come in contact with each other’s hair, clips and other accessories.

According to the US-based Center for Disease Control (CDC), an estimated 6 million to 12 million infestations occur each year in the United States among children 3 to 11 years of age.

Symptoms of head lice

The most common symptom is itching. The Centre for Disease Control (CDC) also lists the following symptoms: Tickling feeling of something moving in the hair.

Irritability and difficulty sleeping; head lice are most active in the dark. Sores on the head caused by scratching. These sores can sometimes become infected with bacteria found on the person’s skin.

How do you check for head lice?

Sit your child on a chair in a brightly lit room.

Look for crawling lice and for nits on your child’s scalp, one section at a time.

Did you know?

You are most likely to find lice in the hair behind your ears or at the back of your neck.

What is the comb-out method for elimination of lice?

Step 1 Wet your child’s hair.

Step 2 Use a fine-tooth comb and comb through your child’s hair in small sections.

Step 3 After each combthrough, wipe the comb on a wet paper towel.

Step 4 Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you’ve combed through all of your child’s hair.

Decontamination of the house

While lice don’t live long when they are in human hair, it’s best to disinfect the sheets and clothes of whoever is being treated for lice, while washing them separately.

How to prevent lice

According to the US-based Cleveland clinic, to prevent lice, as a parent, you can do the following things:

Talk to your children about lice. Teach your children not to share

combs, brushes, hats, or other items with their friends or classmates.

Tell your children not to have physical contact with anyone they know has lice.

Examine and treat all members of your household who have had contact with someone who’s had lice.

Tell your child’s school, daycare center or babysitter if they have head lice.

Myths & Facts

Myth Children can get lice by swimming in a community pool

Fact Swimming does not spread lice. According to data, lice, while unaffected by chlorine in swimming pools, lice do hold on tight to strands of hair during a dunk in water; they are therefore unlikely to spread.

Myth Family pets may have to be treated for head lice to prevent spread.

Fact No. Head lice do not live on pets. They are not spread by pets. H

Transforming the Transplant Narrative

With over 600 organ transplants to its credit, in the last few years, the 400-bed quaternary care MGM Healthcare, Chennai, India has now emerged as the only hospital in Southeast Asia to become a leader in Multi-visceral (MVT) organ transplant.

Dr. Vaidya, a pioneering transplant surgeon with wide experience at Oxford University and various US hospitals, has to his credit the largest series of abdominal wall transplants, over 1000 pancreas transplant and has carried out several simultaneous kidney-pancreas transplants. He has set many new medical precedents at MGM healthcare.

Scripting a new medical precedent

After carrying out several successful heart, lung and simultaneous heartlung transplants, liver and kidney transplants, MGM Healthcare’s latest MultiVisceral Transplantation program, is scripting a new healthcare narrative. Under the expertise of world-renowned transplant surgeon Professor Dr. Anil Vaidya, chair, and Director of the Institute of MVT and Abdominal Transplant at the Hospital, the new program holds out hope to thousands of patients whose lives can now be saved with these procedures.

What is MVT?

Multi-Visceral Transplantation program under the expertise of worldrenowned transplant surgeon Professor Dr. Anil Vaidya, chair, and Director of the Institute of MVT and Abdominal Transplant at the Hospital is scripting a new healthcare narrative for thousands of patients whose lives can now be saved with these procedures. This involves replacing diseased or failing organs of the gastrointestinal tract such as the liver, kidneys, small bowels, pancreas, stomach and so on, with healthy organs from a deceased donor. This has been found to be very effective in patients with chronic diseases and those suffering from multi-organ failure and those suffering from a variety of cancers of the GI tract.

In the last few months, Dr Vaidya has successfully conducted pediatric kidney transplant from live donors, in children weighing below eight kilograms, simultaneous pancreas and kidney transplant in diabetic patients with end stage renal diseases, small bowel transplant in cancer patients, liver transplant from live donors and conducted over seven simultaneous transplants in a single patient facing multiple-organ failure.

Speaking to HEALTH, Dr. Vaidya talked about the need for families to go ahead with pediatric kidney transplants, he said, “Pediatric kidney transplants continues to be niche specialty and there are very few international hospitals doing this. It is not correct to

34 Aug/Sep 2023

put a child with congenital kidney disease into dialysis and waiting list for transplant until he/she is a teenager. A child with congenital kidney disease undergoing dialysis faces stunted physical and mental growth. Instead, if he/she gets a kidney early on from a live donor, there is a definite improvement in his or her quality of life. Dr Vaidya explained the concept of half -life in transplants to highlight survival rates. Graft half-life is defined as the time taken of half of the grafts functioning at one year to fail. Dr Vaidya elaborated, “If I do approximately 100 kidney transplants in period of time, in 50 per cent of the patients, the organ from live donors has a survival rate 30 years. A child needs to have the transplant as soon as possible and if one of the parents is a donor, this can now be done as early as possible.”

International patients who have live donors can easily opt for pediatric kidney transplants at MGM Healthcare, Chennai, India.

Curing diabetes and kidney failure with simultaneous organ transplant

Another feature of MVT transplants is simultaneous pancreas and kidney transplants in patients with diabetes who also have end stage kidney disease owing to long term diabetic nephropathy.

A recent case in point was that of a 34, year old IT employee from Delhi, suffering from Type 1 Diabetes and on dialysis, who underwent a simultaneous pancreas and kidney transplant in May 2023, that cured him of diabetes and kidney disease.

The young executive was in despair owing to end-stage kidney disease was on dialysis and suffered from a host of other diabetic complications such as hypoglycemic unawareness, that lead to frequent loss of consciousness unexpectedly. After a 7-hour procedure led by Professor Dr Vaidya, accompanied by a core team of highly specialized transplant surgeons, Dr Senthil. M, Dr Thiagarajan Srinivasan, Dr Karthik Mathivanan, Dr Dinesh Babu, and Dr Nivash Chandrasekhar, the patient was immediately taken off insulin and dialysis.

Elaborating on the the procedure, Dr Vaidya said, “The transplant served a dual purpose of not only rendering the patient

free from dialysis, but effectively curing his diabetes, which is by far the single most important risk factor for heart attacks, strokes and vascular disease.”

Who can benefit from MVT? Dr Vaidya explained that the ideal candidates for this simultaneous transplant were patients suffering from type 1 diabetes mellitus with end stage renal disease and undergoing dialysis, selected type 2 diabetes mellitus, patients facing failure of insulin therapy for diabetes management, those suffering diabetes related metabolic complications like ketoacidosis, and hypoglycemic unawareness.

Dr Vaidya has successfully conducted small bowel transplant and other MVT surgeries with success in patients suffering from some types of cancers of the gastrointestinal tract such as neuro endocrine tumors, gastrointestinal tumors metastasizing in the liver, some cases of familial adenomatous polyposis and a rare kind of cancer called pseudomyxoma peritonei. His patients were able to lead a healthy life, with recurrence of cancer in a limited way which was treatable. One of his MVT transplant patients has been successfully able to run marathons.

While survival rate for MVT patients can vary from 1, 3, 5 to 10 years or more, it is the complete restoration of good quality of life that makes a strong case for this kind of transplant.

Minimum Post-operative care

Patients are taught to be self-reliant early on, post-transplant and weaned off the hospital support very soon to make them independent with minimum returns.

“The team at MGM Healthcare uses a unique induction immunosuppressive treatment that is not only free to the patient but has major benefits against rejection, allows for patients not to be on steroids and has an excellent safety profile against infections,” explained Dr Vaidya.

International Patients from the Middle East, in particular, who have live organ donors can easily avail this unique expertise from a worldrenowned transplant expert and his team at MGM Healthcare, Chennai, India.

MGM MVT Transplantation Programme

The hospital offers:

• Pancreas Transplant

• Small Bowel/Intestine Transplant

• Pediatric Kidney Transplant

• Multi-Visceral Organ Transplant including Liver.

• Complete cure for lifelong diabetes with Pancreas transplants. H

Adapting to the Winds of Change

From AI platforms to e-commerce and setting up online purchases through an app, brothers Hrishikesh and Rohit Datar discuss how they as third generation scions of Adil, blend traditional business style with the present-day digital challenges of the marketplace.

Family businesses in the digital transformation era today have to work hard to keep in step with the new AI-enabled technologies and online customer interface to survive the challenge of the modern needs of the consumer.

Adil store has witnessed rapid transformation over the years. Launched in 1984, it rose exponentially with the efforts of Dhananjay Datar, the Managing Director. Today, it has over 50 branches across the UAE, GCC and India combined, thanks to the efforts of the third generation. Adil Trading’s recipe for success is simple: blend tradition with modernization.

Creating a digital footprint

Dhananjay's sons, Hrishikesh and Rohit Datar, have now not only incorporated the traditional styles of trading but added their panache and experience to strengthen the purchase and supply chain, introduced online trading for e-commerce, AI-enabled software systems at their corporate office and new ERP systems to streamline and digitize governance.

The chain, which began with a small store in 1984 in Bur Dubai, has today become a household name, one which conjures images of all things quintessentially Indian. Dubai’s Masala

King Dhananjay

Datar joined his father, Mahadev Datar, seven years into the store’s establishment. The third generation Datar brothers have taken it to the next level.

Keeping pace with digitization

Talking about his style of governance Hrishikesh, with an MBA from Mumbai University explained, “We greatly value the hard work and dedication of our dad and grandfather in building up this store. We sell traditional consumer goods to suit the Indian palate. As a younger member, I focus on procurement of quality products at competitive costs and digitizing the purchase and supply chain systems. Booking orders online, tracking the shipments, ensuring timely delivery with no damage and getting the competitive prices for their customers are some of the things that Hrishikesh has worked hard on. He adds, “Today, technology has enabled all these processes and one must adapt to these systems to ensure best and optimum use. We are

able to anticipate the needs of our consumers, keep inventories and make sure the supply is uninterrupted thanks to the new systems implemented.”

Syncing the real with the virtual

Rohit, the younger of the two, has taken charge of setting up a strong online system for placing and executing orders. “The beauty

36 Aug/Sep 2023
Hrishikesh and Rohit Datar

of our modern world is that most families still preserve the same taste in food, snacks, spices. However, the mode of transaction and sales have changed. We have more orders coming online and through the Al Aadil app, than customers walking into the shop floor. I ensure that the system works without a hitch and the customer faces no delay from the time of booking the order to the time of delivery. The virtual shopping experience must be seamless, and we have to keep up a continuous chain of communication with our consumers on what is new in the stores, the seasonal discounts, the give aways, so that they have the full-on digital shopping experience. At the same time, I take care that our inhouse administration and HR systems are updated,” eloborated Rohit.

Being grounded is therapeutic

Between the two of them, the Datar brothers have silently but surely added the modern dimension to the traditional family business. They have done so without any airs or arrogance. Hrishikesh recounted their efforts, “It takes business acumen, ability to modernize and adapt, but most of all a sound value system. While our parents gave us the opportunity to get good education in business management and marketing, they never forgot to teach us to be humble and grounded always.”

Rohit added, “As kids we lived in a small apartment in Bur Dubai and spent the happiest days of our

life surrounded with genuine friends with whom we continue to maintain strong family bonds. My father never let us feel we were born with silver spoons. Every summer we interned at one of the stores and learnt the basic ropes of storekeeping, purchase, and consumer management. We had to earn our way up the corporate ladder and are grateful for this thorough and traditional values instilled by our parents in us. My mother has always instilled this thought in us. We are actively involved in various charitable organizations that work towards the betterment of society. We feel grateful for the life we have been given and want to empower the community and support initiatives that give back to the community.”

Datar Brothers’ 5 tips to blending tradition with modernity

Keep an open mind for adaptation to change, but do not discard the old for new carelessly.

Efficiency, cost effectiveness, higher productivity and yield are important points to consider when adapting to new systems.

No matter how hi-tech you get, never forget, that the customer is king and listen to the customer above all.

Value the system operators who run the administrative machinery and be grounded with actual meetings and greetings.

You are never too big to visit your own store in the remotest area and personally speak to your customers. No close circuit camera or virtual meeting can replace that. H

acquired eight date palm trees in his villa in Meadows, Dubai. With systematic scientific nurturing, the date saplings grew to a height of 20 plus meters, each yielding15-18 large bunch of fruits, weighing up to 1500 kg a year, an entirely organic harvest with no chemicals or artificial fertilizers used, elaborated Asad.

This generous farmer then distributes the bounty around to blue collar workers, labor camps, family members, friends and to mosques as well as sending it overseas to friends in India, Gulf, UK, and Australia. The entire process of cultivation is no mean feat, considering the laborintensive process of nurturing them from pollination to harvest.

The tall and strong date palms in his garden, are a testament to the deep connection Asad has formed with the land and his dedication to mastering the skills required for this agricultural endeavour. Over the last two decades, he has undoubtedly accumulated a wealth of knowledge and expertise in the art of date cultivation, making him a valuable and respected member of the date-farming community.

“It’s been a fantastic experience here in the UAE,” elaborated Asad talking about how he extended his passion for gardening to cultivating dates. “Although I had a liking for gardening, it is Dubai that gave me the opportunity to nurture this hobby into a full-fledged passion.”

Date-farming, like any other agricultural pursuit, requires a profound understanding of the land, weather patterns, and the intricacies of date palm cultivation. Asad’s experience has likely taught him the importance of selecting the right variety of date palms for his specific region, as different varieties thrive in different climates and soil conditions. He cultivates Ajwa, Mejdool , Khadrawi and Deglet Noor varieties in his backyard.

Asad Haque

Caring for date palms is a laborintensive process, and Asad’s passion for the craft likely extends to every aspect of his work. From planting and nurturing young date palms to pruning and fertilizing mature trees, Asad has honed his skills through years of hands-on experience and a keen eye for detail.

An arduous handpollination process

Dates palms, both male or female must be hand-pollinated as no birds or insects are attracted to its flowers and Asad described the arduous pollination process. “Skilled gardeners are required to scale the trees, that can grow up to a height of 25 metres, with the leaves extending for 4 to 6 meters, using rope harnesses hitched around their waists and navigating the about sixinch long thorns, to reach the flowers and pollinate the trees by hand. What follows are six to eight months of rigorous care, especially, keeping pests like the red palm weevil at bay.”

Every single day, this diligent farmer oversees every step of the process and lovingly gives the trees ‘’baths”,

drenching them with water and keep the soil moisturised and cool.

Asad gives special credit to his wife Reshma with doing a beautiful job of packing, packaging, upkeeping the hygiene and helping in distribution of the fruits.

The allegorical and spiritual benefits of date farming

There are other intangible ‘fruits’ of his labor that he cannot discount, he notes. “For one to take up date farming, one has to either have a lot of patience or cultivate such a trait. That’s something I’ve learnt after all these years of date farming; it’s given me a lot of patience.

There is a deeply spiritual satisfaction that comes from seeing something through, from flowering to harvesting, that is difficult to express in words.”

Date cultivation a lesson in meticulous punctuality

One of the most critical aspects of date-farming is the precise timing of the harvest. As the dates ripen, Asad’s experience enables him to determine the perfect moment to pick the fruit

to achieve the desired level of sweetness and texture. This level of understanding comes from years of observing the subtle changes in the appearance and feel of the dates as they mature.

Asad’s dedication to date-farming has brought him not only personal fulfillment but also a sense of responsibility towards his community and the environment. His passion for the craft has extended to promoting responsible land management, environmental sustainability, and conservation. What started with a green thumb and a few date palms in his backyard has now blossomed into a full-time passion and led Asad’s on a remarkable journey of skill acquisition and personal growth over the last two decades and a symbol of prosperity, hope and unity. Dining Out

Create Happy Memories at Nawab Restaurant

Good food, like a good book, is about ingenuity in content, presentation, and that great lingering aftertaste. There have got to be some interesting twists and improvisations in flavors combined with a relaxing ambience, great hospitality that creates a happy memory that one is keen to relive with a repeat visit.

Nawab Restaurant, Dubai has all those elements of serenading the tastebuds of true connoisseurs. If you are authentic Indian /Mughlai cuisine lover, then visit any of Nawab’s branches located in Jebel Ali Recreation Centre, Circle Mall, JVC, or at the Dubai Investment Park. Each of the branches are consistent in royal and rich flavor in their preparations, true to their name.

We visited the Jebel Ali Recreation Centre branch, aesthetic in its sophisticated and comfortable interiors and great live music that added to the bonhomie of the experience. For sports lovers, the place also offers live cricket and football matches on giant screens. Sports and music do go well with great food.

Nawab offers an eclectic menu that merges lip-smacking Indian street food favorites, flavorful Indo-Chinese dishes, Thai cuisine and healthy vegetarian and non-vegetarian grilled platters, including sizzlers. For the traditional palette, there is the elaborate and consummate vegetarian and non-vegetarian thali which is akin to what would be the staple in most Indian households, but these with a rich, festive twist.

We began the evening with interesting mocktails including mint mojitos, zingy lemon, and ginger sherbet, amongst others. The appetizer - tangy spinach leaves chaat, grilled cottage cheese marinated with traditional spices and roasted on skewers with crunchy vegetables, soft grilled garlic white fish, tandoori prawns, and succulent pieces of grilled, boneless chicken marinated in aromatic spices, just worked to build up a great appetite.

For the main course, we stuck to traditional Indian fare fit for royals – Dal tadka, Handi chicken, bhuna mutton masala and tawa vegetables

which included seasonal veggies stir fried on the griddle, accompanied with a basket of fresh breads. The ingredients were fresh, the spices tempered just right and seemed hand pounded with fresh aromas, the food was cooked at a slow, leisurely pace as the flavors were delightfully smoky. A pleasant digression was a Thai green curry with steam rice which was done just right and helped refresh our palette.

We ended on a grand finale of tempting Indian desserts - chilled Rasmalai and kulfi falooda. Believe me, despite such a generous round of food combinations, we hadn’t even sampled one third of the menu. For a passionate and adventurous foodie, Nawab has so much to offer. Clearly, the place requires several repeat visits to do justice to their menu. One can visit for brunch, lunch, evening snacks or dinner, Nawab is clearly a restaurant for all seasons!

Take a Walk Down Sumo Sushi & Bento, Dubai

tempura outside. The twister was a twisted version of their California Roll, satisfying your craving for crabstick, avocado, cucumber, and twist in cheese rolled with tempura.

Nestled in the heart of Jumeirah for a remarkable 23 years, Sumo Sushi stands as an iconic brand, inviting patrons to indulge in an unforgettable experience in a huge space in the central area of Jumeirah Town Centre..

Sumo Sushi & Bento has meticulously curated an exquisite menu, offering an array of delectable Japanese delicacies that cater to diverse palates. From mouth-watering sushi rolls, meticulously crafted with the freshest ingredients.

From the appetisers, we tucked into

their appetizer tray which included a sampling of their key appetizers: karaage chicken, ebi fry, edamame, gyoza, Japanese Kaarage, and ebi fry which was our favorite—kunafa spun prawns deep fried to a golden crisp served with our sweet chili dipping sauce.

Our salad was their deliciously refreshing cucumber crabstick salad which was a juxtaposition of thinly sliced cucumber and strips of crabstick, topped with tobiko and mayo. Seafood Ramen was a traditional ramen, made in rich seafood flavors: salmon, squid, prawns, narutomaki, beans sprouts, wakame, bakchoy and a perfectly cooked egg. Spicy Salmon Temaki was a delightfully presented cucumber, spicy mayo, and salmon roll while the Japanese Curry Katsu was a soul warming curry that was breaded, deep-fried chicken cutlet served with a traditional Japanese curry sauce over a bed of rice.

Their sushi boat was a large wooden boat that included their signature sushi varieties all on one. So we nibbled on the sushi sandwich, which was fresh minced tuna and salmon mixed with crispy tempura, spicy mayo and tobiko, rolled and cut into a sandwich. Then the crunchy California, which was delicious, with avocado, crabstick, cucumber, and mayo rolled with crispy

Beverages here are also fresh, and we tried the Cucumber Cooler, a refreshing mix of fresh cucumber, orange, lemon juices and mint leaves. Then the Green Twist, a refreshing combination of kiwi and green apple. As a delightful finale to our culinary journey, we indulged in Sumo Sushi’s irresistible dessert - the ‘Tropical Treasure.’ This delectable treat featured a luscious, deep-fried banana, artfully coated with a crispy panko crust that added a delightful crunch to every bite. What sets Sumo Sushi & Bento apart is not only its culinary mastery but the dedication to delivering exceptional dining experiences is evident in every detail, from the attentive and friendly staff to the aesthetically pleasing décor that reflects the essence of Japanese culture and artistry.

Teaching Financial Literacy to Children

As soon as your child understands about purchasing power of money and its transactional nature, it is time parents to inculcate the value of money. Financial coach Marilyn Lydia Pinto, who holds workshops to instil values of financial literacy in children, explains more.

In a world where most parents are unable to say no to their kid and the kid is surrounded by numerous temptations, very often that individual is likely to grow up thinking money is a tool of appeasement.

Therefore, it is important to give your child a very organic understanding of money and its influence over life early on. Those lessons in financial literacy will help your child grow up with a very balanced attitude towards greed, expenditure, debts, saving and investments. Pinto explains, “Financial literacy is the confluence

of three things, knowledge, attitude, and behavior in making smarter money decisions. People usually only tend to focus on the knowledge aspect and that’s a very inadequate definition.”

Age appropriateness

A serious money conversation can begin when the kids are 8 to 10

50 Aug/Sep 2023

years old, when they are old enough to understand more about what money means, how it works and how they can relate it to their daily lives. But building their awareness even before that age would help. In terms of how to shape the right attitude to money in a child, Pinto feels that kids only think that money grows on trees because we don’t take the time to talk to them about money at a deeper level. “We think they won’t understand or care…but that’s a fallacy. They do understand and they do care… and talking to them about money helps them in so many ways. The three main ways to provide them with a sound concept of money is to tell them about the three 3 C’s - clarity, control, and confidence. And this confidence isn’t bravado, it’s the confidence that comes from understanding how to make better, smarter money decisions. Learning this at a young age helps hardwire this behavior and it then becomes second nature to them.

The teenage years

Pinto believes that the onset of adolescence is the right time for a child to learn about money. “By the time a child has entered his teenage years, he must have the right mindset about money, needs versus wants, budgeting, loans, investing and so on. It is important to have the right mindset to money. It is the most important component of financial education for a child. The ability of a child to differentiate between needs and wants is the foundation of financial education. Next comes debts; as a teenager is likely to borrow from friends or family, debt is an important aspect too. Then comes budgeting. The teenager who will soon go to college must understand that the funds are limited, and he or she will give up something in favor of another, that is more important; he needs to get the budgeting concept right.” And according to Pinto, investing in returns is the last piece of the puzzle and must be taught only once all the other previous elements of literacy have been well understood.

Financial literacy begins at home

One of the common mistakes parents make is leaving financial education to school. That is challenging because most schools, when they do teach financial literacy, tend to teach it as mathbased skill. According to Pinto “Financial literacy is not a mathbased skill, it involves psychology, behavioral economics, critical thinking, cognitive bias recognition, knowledge on investing and more.” Not only are school teachers overburdened and face burnout with their current workload, they

also don’t have the proper training or resources to carry this out effectively. Financial education is a specialized field and should be done by experts in the field and have the experience is teaching this to kids.

Five top tips on parents teaching financial literacy

Be good role models. Kids don’t do what we tell them, they do what they see us do. Being careful not to flaunt bad money behaviors is so important.

Spare the lecture: Kids switch off when we go into lecture mode. Use stories to drive home a point.

Teach the right values: Don’t forget that gratitude and generosity are two oft ignored elements of good money behavior. It’s critical to inculcate this in kids.

Provide instruments of debit or credit very thoughtfully: Don’t assume that giving kids a debit card or credit app will financially educate them. This is probably the biggest mistake parents make.

Enrol your child in a financial literacy course. Ensure that you enrol them for a reputable financial education program before you give them an allowance. Just like you wouldn’t’ let your kids drive without enrolling them for driving lessons, it’s important that they get the proper training before receiving an allowance. H

Curated Network versus Wide Network of Healthcare Facilities

TPAs play a significant role in the health insurance industry as we are intermediaries between insurance companies and healthcare providers, facilitating access to quality healthcare services to the insured members.

With the growing demand for healthcare services in the UAE, TPAs have become increasingly important in ensuring that members receive timely and adequate medical services. By working closely with healthcare providers, TPAs help to streamline the healthcare system, reduce costs, and improve the overall quality of healthcare services.

To ensure that the appropriate and quality healthcare is provided to a member, it is essential for us to have efficient coverage of healthcare facilities in our network.

But how does one define an efficient network?

Having a larger number of healthcare facilities in a policy can offer a wider range of options. however, only 35 percent of the total healthcare facilities are utilized, keeping the rest underutilized. We are of the opinion that limiting the number of healthcare facilities within the network helps us to carefully assess and partner with only top-quality providers. This allows for a higher level of quality assurance and

ensures that the members receive care without any hassle.

Furthermore, it is a win-win situation for both the healthcare providers and TPAs like us as the network is curated, they will have more footfall resulting high volume of business impacting better tariffs and more discounts.

Curated networks often have stringent criteria for provider selection. To achieve it, there is a rigorous selection process, as follows.

Firstly, there is a complete evaluation process for healthcare providers based on their accreditation and licensing. Secondly, there are steps to assess healthcare providers based on their track record of providing quality healthcare services. Factors such as patient outcomes, patient satisfaction, and clinical quality measures are considered. Finally, it is ensured that the network covers a comprehensive range of healthcare facilities, ensuring that the insured members have access to the medical services they need.

We are certain that a smaller network can facilitate better care coordination among providers.

Members can develop strong relationships with network facilities, allowing for seamless referrals, information exchange, and care continuity. This can result in improved communication between healthcare professionals,

Aafiya
54 Aug/Sep 2023

enhanced patient outcomes, and a smoother healthcare journey for members.

A curated network of healthcare facilities can contribute to a better customer experience. Members may have more personalized attention, shorter wait times, and access to comprehensive services within a trusted network. The emphasis on quality ensures that members receive appropriate and effective care, leading to increased satisfaction and loyalty.

However, the biggest challenge here is there should be a consistent effort to ensure our members understand the relevant criteria to consider a healthcare policy basis the network coverage. This is only possible with the support of Brokers and Channel Partners who can guide and ensure that they are aware of their options and are able to make informed

decisions about their healthcare policies; but in the current market scenario, the insurance payers and brokers are only focussing on the volume of the network covered. By creating a network that is tailored to the needs of the end-users, healthcare policies can be more effective in providing high-quality care to patients. In addition to these key points, further analysis could be done on the challenges and opportunities associated with creating a healthcare network that meets the needs of end-users. This could include examining the role of technology in expanding access to healthcare, exploring different models for healthcare delivery (such as homecare or community health centers), and considering the impact of cultural and social factors on healthcare utilization.

As a TPA, we understand the importance of a strong network

and by considering all the aforementioned points, we have created an exclusive network for our members which is classified into 3 categories; Gold, APN Plus & Edge customized as per the needs and preferences of our members.

Overall, we are of the opinion that creating a healthcare network that is relevant to the needs of the end-users is a complex task that requires careful consideration of several factors over having multiple healthcare facilities to demonstrate volume and we believe by focusing on criteria such as provider types, locations, and quality, we have created networks that are more effective and efficient in delivering highquality care to our members.

From pediatric questions to general medical queries, our panel of experts is here to answer your questions.

Question: I am 28 years old and have been married for two years. We have been trying to start our family, but I was diagnosed with endometriosis recently. Would you advise IVF for conception?

Endometriosis is a medical condition wherein the endometrial glands, which normally line the inside of the uterus (endometrium) grows outside the uterus and around the pelvis, notably in the ovaries. It can also be found deep in the pelvis involving the bladder, rectum, abdomen, and can form a cyst in the ovary which also is known as a chocolate cyst or endometriotic cyst.

Endometriosis can affect fertility by causing pelvic inflammation, adhesions and anatomical distortion and are toxic to sperm and eggs.

If you have been married for 2 years and been diagnosed with endometriosis, then it is better to seek an evaluation and consultation with a fertility specialist to decide on the best modality of treatment.

A comprehensive evaluation would consist of the following:

• Detailed history taking to identify areas of concern.

• Pelvic scan to check for the endometriosis and its cyst and size.

• To check for the ovarian reserve by measuring the antral follicle count, AFC and antiMullerian hormone, AMH.

• To note for any associated hydrosalpinx or adhesions.

• Tubal patency test like Hyfosy can be done to check if the tubes are open or blocked.

• Husbands’ semen test

• Hormonal tests.

If the fallopian tubes are patent with a good ovarian reserve and presence of small cyst along with normal semen parameters, then few cycles of ovulation induction with intra uterine insemination, IUI can be done to maximize chances of conception. IVF treatment should be considered after 2-3 unsuccessful IUI cycles.

In case of severe endometriosis with blocked or nonfunctional tubes, IVF can be planned, and the embryos cryopreserved. Preimplantation genetic screening, PGS of embryos can also be considered to select the normal form the abnormal embryos. Prior to transferring the normal embryos, laparoscopy surgery should be considered to clear the endometriosis followed by down regulation for one or two cycles. This helps in reducing the inflammation and subsequent implantation and healthy pregnancy outcome.

Decision to proceed with IVF should be made after a thorough check and evaluation of your fertility status. It is important to have an honest and open conversation with your fertility care provider to ask questions and decide once fully understanding your options. Seeking emotional support during this process also helps to tide over the crisis.

Question: I have pain on my back neck running till my right hand end. What alternative medicine I can take up to increase the chances of solving my neck pain issue, especially with cupping therapy?

Traditional alternative medicine procedure known as ‘cupping therapy’ involves applying cups to the skin in order to create suction. This method is thought to have the power to improve blood flow, speed up the healing process, and treat a number of diseases, including muscle discomfort. Over the years, the therapy has demonstrated potential in reducing neck discomfort in patients. Additionally, cupping is sometimes portrayed as a detoxification procedure intended to get rid of toxins and waste.

Dry and wet cupping are the two main variants. Wet cupping involves drawing blood through scarification prior to cup application, whereas dry cupping applies cups to the skin to produce a vacuum without drawing blood. The use of cupping therapy goes beyond musculoskeletal issues; it has also been used to alleviate pain and regulate hypertension and post-stroke rehabilitation.

If you’re thinking about using cupping treatment to relieve neck discomfort, getting advice from a professional healthcare provider is advised. Based on your unique medical background and condition, such an expert can provide tailored advice that’s best suited to you.
