What is My Back Pain Telling Me?

Most of us, at some point in our lives, have suffered from some sort of back pain. Yet, understanding the type of pain and where it’s coming from can be critical during the time of diagnosis. Here to explain, Dr. Amit Chaturvedi, Orthopedic Specialist, reveals the facts about back pain.

6Sep/Oct 2022

Understand the severity of your symptoms

According to Dr. Chaturvedi, usually in the 20s and 30s, ‘normal’ back pain can often be attributed to factors of daily life, such as prolonged sitting, lifting children up, or overdoing exercises. He adds, “But in the later decades, work injuries and degenerative conditions are more common.

Approximately 80 percent of adults will experience back pain in their lives, so it’s important to be able to identify the severity of your symptoms and track how long the pain lasts. If back pain can be associated with a specific activity, such as lifting or twisting wrong, and the pain goes away within 72 hours after resting and applying ice, it’s usually nothing to worry about. However, if pain creeps on gradually, appears suddenly, or doesn’t go away, a medical opinion is required.”

Types of pain

Back pain can range from an aching muscle to a shooting, burning or stabbing sensation. “In addition, the pain may radiate down your leg or worsen with bending, twisting, lifting, standing or walking,” he says, and if the pain is radiating to the lower limbs, usually it

signifies some involvement or irritation of the nerve roots in your lower spine.

Mid-back pain: The common reasons for a mid-back pain, he explains, are poor posture, muscle strains or sprains, sedentary life style, obesity, kidney problems, for example, kidney stones can also mimic mid back pain.

Upper back-pain: The usual reason for upper back pain or pain between the shoulder blades includes poor posture, working on a computer for extended hours, herniated discs in the neck, osteoarthritis of the cervical spine or spondylitis, or fibromyalgia rotator cuff injury, he says. “Nonmusculoskeletal may cause the pain to radiate in the inter-scapular region, while others may include acid reflux, gall stones, heart and lungs conditions.”

Back pain during exercising: Back pain which increases or occurs during or after exercising can be due to herniated disc, muscle and ligament injuries, failing to warm up before exercising or strenuous exercises.

Back pain during walking: Back pain which increases during walking and is associated with numbness in the lower limbs may be a symptom of spinal stenosis, says Dr. Chaturvedi.

Tips to Maintain Optimal Back Health

• Maintain good posture and work ergonomics.

• Use a firm or a medium firm mattress.

• Maintain a good core strength for your back and abdominal muscles.

• Remain active.

• Maintain a healthy lifestyle, and weight.

• Be mobile.

• Take care while heavy lifting.

• Avoid smoking.

• Avoid sitting for long hours and stand where possible.

• Choose the proper footwear and avoid high heels. H

A Holistic Approach to Gut Health

Gut health is a buzzword in today’s wellness space and here to elaborate on exactly what it means and how to maintain it, Fahmida Jafri, Dietician and Head of Nutrition, explains.

What it means and how its compromised Gut health, explains Jafri, is the well-being of the digestive tract in simple terms. “It includes good digestion, absorption, and assimilation of food as well as effective elimination of toxins from the body,” she says. “Each part of the digestive

tract has a host of microbiomes which support digestion.” Maintaining a healthy balance of gut microbiota is essential for effective immune system and mental health. Diet has a direct impact over gut health, she says. “Our diet is the diet for millions of bacteria which reside in our gut.” Unhealthy,

sugary and processed food choices may encourage growth of bad bacteria which in turn, reduces the beneficial bacteria in the gut. “Moreover, research says that any symptoms like gut inflammation, leaky gut and dysbiosis can turn the switch on for autoimmune disease.”

8Sep/Oct 2022

Optimal gut health and what it means

Optimal gut health can be reflected by good absorption of nutrients, improved immunity and avoidance of digestive diseases, she says, adding, “If the gut microbiome comprises mainly of good bacteria, it supports the synthesis of vitamins B and K. By maintaining an optimal gut health, we can avoid inflammatory conditions like IBS, IBD and celiac disease to a greater extent.” Moreover, our gut is also termed as the ‘second brain’ owing to the fact that the gut bacteria have the power to stimulate our nervous system.

Good for the gut foods / beverages we should be consuming

There are several ways we can promote gut health. She explains, “Consumption of probiotics, unprocessed fiber rich foods and prebiotics can support a healthy gut flora as they are designed to boost the populations of ‘good’ bacteria. Keeping these bacteria healthy prevents the overgrowth of ‘bad’ microorganisms, which can cause digestive issues. By increasing the microbial diversity, gut health can be promoted. Fruits, vegetables, wholegrains, nuts and seeds are prebiotic foods that feed our beneficial bacteria and help our microbiome to thrive.” Probiotics are the actual live bacteria that you obtain from fermented foods, like sauerkraut, or probiotics supplements. “Prebiotics are

plant fibers that help nourish and feed the bacteria in your gut,” she says. “They promote the growth of healthy bacteria; and some examples of pre-biotic foods are garlic, onions, leeks, apple with skin, artichokes and green plantain.”

Foods that are notoriously bad for the gut

Foods that are rich in refined sugars, oils and fats are the worst for damaging gut health, reveals Jafri. “Processed meats, fried foods, sugary beverages rich in high fructose corn syrup and some artificial sweeteners as well can contribute to dysbiosis in the gut microbiome,” she explains.

The most common gut issues

The most common issues with the gut are gut dysbiosis, constipation and acid reflux, reveals Jafri. “These issues can manifest as a symptom of an underlying major issue or as an indicator of imbalance in gut microbiota,” she says. “Poor gut health can lead to sleep disturbances, low energy, skin irritation and bad breath problems.”

Gut dysbiosis: This encompasses a wide range of symptoms starting from mild bloating to Crohn’s disease. The best remedy is to eliminate commercial foods, sugars and chemicals from the diet, she says, and instead, add fiber rich prebiotics such as broccoli, kale, leeks as well as berries, apple and oranges. Fermented foods such as kefir, yoghurt can help improve microbial diversity.

Constipation: Healthy bowel movement is essential for gut health. Drink at least 8 to 10 cups of water per day. Include 4 to 5 cups vegetables and 2 to 3 cups of fruits per day. Limit processed foods and include healthy fats such as olive oil or coconut oil in moderation.

Acid Reflux: Diet plays a major role in controlling acid reflux symptoms. “Alkaline foods such as ripe bananas and melons can help reduce the symptoms,” she says, and focus on hydrating foods such as celery, cucumbers, lettuce, and watermelon. Yoghurt and ginger can be considered as home remedies to soothe heartburn. H

Lifestyle checklist to help facilitate optimal gut health

• Eat healthy, eat clean.

• Include fiber in your diet through unprocessed grains, fresh vegetables and fruits.

• Snack on nuts, seeds and yoghurt.

• Avoid oily, sugary, high fat foods.

• Limit commercial foods and drinks.

• Eat small, frequent meals.

• Manage your stress.

• Exercise regularly.

• Stay well hydrated.

• Consume probiotics.

• Limit your caffeine intake.

Post sun exposure and what to do about it

Most of us are aware of the rules to follow for protecting ourselves from sun exposure. However, what if we have already been exposed to the sun? Dr. Demetrius Evriviades, Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon details the facts about post sun exposure.

10Sep/Oct 2022

MORE COMMON ISSUES RELATED TO POST SUN EXPOSURE IN THE SKIN

Obviously too much sun exposure can lead to sunburn, says Dr. Evriviades. “This, as anyone who has had it knows, can be very painful until it heals,” he says, however, more concerning is that sunburn significantly increases the lifetime risk of developing skin cancer. He adds, “This risk accumulates during your whole life, so the more sunshine you get, the greater the risk.” Also, ultraviolet sunrays age the skin dramatically.

UV light creates free radicals which damage collagen and elastic fibers in the skin, reducing the skin’s elasticity and strength and promoting the development of wrinkles. It also stimulates melanocytes in the skin to produce more melanin, leading to pigmentation issues such as lentigo or melasma (sunspots).

HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH SUN EXPOSURE

Some sunlight exposure is necessary and healthy, as UVB rays help make vitamin D which is essential for health. “But try to avoid strong sunlight, particularly during noon and early afternoon.”

SPECIFIC ISSUES

Sun spots: The best way is to avoid developing sun spots in the first place, he says. “Be very careful to minimize sun exposure which triggers sun spots.” Once you have sunspots, sometimes they may fade over time, particularly if sun exposure to the area is prevented, however, it only takes a small amount of sun exposure to bring them back - so wearing sun protection daily is paramount.

Treatment: There are several effective topical treatments for sunspots, this includes both tretinoin and hydroquinone; both which can be effective if applied daily. “It is also wise to add an antioxidant to your daily skincare regimen such as vitamin C containing creams.” Whatever treatment is used, prolonged sun exposure will undo all the good work very quickly, so using a good sunscreen daily is a must.

Moles: His advice is to use a good daily sun protection regimen and keep an eye on your moles, watching for any changes in appearance (size, shape, color) or one that begins to itch. Seek advice from your doctor if you have any concerns.

Pigmentation: According to Dr. Evriviades, pigmentation is very difficult to completely remove, but it can be significantly improved now that we understand the causes and mechanisms behind it. “If a patient is committed to good sun protection, topical treatments applied daily can significantly reduce pigmentation problems.”

Aging: “Prolonged lifelong sun exposure will cause your skin to age more rapidly,” he says, with a loss of elasticity, increased wrinkling, pigmentation issues and ultimately a ‘leathery’ look to the skin. It is very important to be aware that sun-exposure is the single biggest causative factor in the development of skin cancer. “I have spent much of my career treating patients with advanced skin cancer which can be fatal and even if not, the treatment can leave people disfigured,” he explains, so a sensible approach is to limit your exposure throughout your life.

THE BEST WAYS TO PROTECT OURSELVES FROM THE SUN

The best time to get some sun is early morning or late afternoon.

Avoid the midday sun.

Wearing a good quality sunscreen daily is paramount, preferably one with a UVA blocker also known as broad spectrum.

But don’t just rely on sunscreen, layer up your protection with clothing, a broad-brimmed hat and sunglasses.

Use a daily moisturizer to aid your skin recovery and maintain hydration preferably one containing an antioxidant such as vitamin C. H

Drawing Boundaries for Optimal Mental Health

For many of us, drawing boundaries with our boss, spouse, and even friends can be challenging. Here to explain how it’s done, Mai Elsayed, NextGen MENA Committee member, Clinical Hypnotherapist provides tips and reveals how it can boost your mental health.

Mai Elsayed
12Sep/Oct 2022

WHAT IT MEANS

Boundaries, explains Elsayed, define where one’s self ends and other people begin. Setting boundaries simply means communicating with others what we can and cannot accept. She elaborates, “Almost all relationships require that we draw boundaries because we teach people how to treat us by politely expressing our lines of discomfort when it comes to physical space, feelings, and behaviors.”

THE IMPLICATIONS IF BOUNDARIES ARE CROSSED

According to Elsayed, when we have weak boundaries, we are often at risk of being taken advantage of and underappreciated. “We end up carrying the burden of someone else’s problems and accepting treatment that leaves us in an emotional turmoil,” she says, therefore, we are left confused and run over, losing the true essence of what healthy boundaries mean or feel like. In the long run, this destroys relationships by building a sense of resentment between both parties. The power dynamic in the relationship changes, she says, becoming an unhealthy one, with one person expecting the other to always sacrifice their needs and wants to please the other. Regardless of the nature of the relationship, we end up feeling unfulfilled that we could lose our sense of identity and self-worth when we allow people to tell us how to think, feel or behave.

WOMEN DRAWING BOUNDARIES

Why do women in particular, have such a hard time drawing boundaries? Lacking boundaries

goes back to our childhood and the way we were raised, tells Elsayed. “When we grow up with conditional love from our caregivers, we learn to do whatever it takes to seek our guardian’s approval to avoid feeling rejected or unloved,” she says, and this applies to both men and women. That said, women have been programmed to be ‘polite’ and ‘nice’ so it is sometimes difficult for them to say ‘no’ to someone who is trespassing their boundaries. “Especially collectivistic cultures have done an excellent job at making kindness and humility synonymous with bending over backwards to please others,” she says. “At a very young age, girls are conditioned to be over-giving and that often leaves them forgetting to prioritize themselves and their own needs.”

THE PROCESS TO HELP DRAW BOUNDARIES

Setting boundaries is directly linked to one’s own self-worth. Therefore, the following process starts with having a one-toone conversation with yourself. Firstly, an important first step is to identify our values and what we stand for. This, she says, allows us to know ourselves better, especially if feeble boundaries have left us with a blurred sense of self. “The second step is to identify people and situations who leave you frustrated, angry or burnt out,” she says, as we should next set clear boundaries in our own minds about what is and isn’t our responsibility. It is always helpful to journal these thoughts down as it creates a clear roadmap or acts as a reference point. Next, ask yourself how you would have reacted to the situations you have listed in step two. “Then make a promise to yourself to respect it

and put it first by communicating your thoughts and feelings honestly,” she explains, and lastly, keep in mind that it may not be easy at first, but embrace the discomfort of setting new boundaries and remember that it will always be better than allowing others to walk all over you.

BOOSTING MENTAL HEALTH

Setting boundaries not only teaches people how to treat us, but also helps us to evolve our sense of self-worth and identity, advises Elsayed. She adds, “People automatically respect those who know when and how to draw the line. We spare ourselves the trouble of going through the stress and anxiety of meeting someone’s unrealistic expectations while having a clearer sense of identity. ”

TIPS TO MAINTAIN POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS WHILE STILL MAINTAINING BOUNDARIES

John Gottman, an American psychologist, coined four horsemen of relationships. These are over criticizing others in harsh ways, communicating in a state of contempt in which we treat each other with disrespect and mockery, behaving defensively or responding to criticism with defensiveness, and finally, stonewalling or withdrawing from the interaction when a response is required. To maintain a positive relationship across the board, we should avoid Gottman’s four horsemen while expressing our thoughts and emotions with kindness and respect. H

A Closer Look at Multiple Sclerosis ( MS )

WE OFTEN HEAR THE TERM MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS (MS) WITHOUT QUITE UNDERSTANDING WHAT THE DISEASE ENTAILS. HERE TO EXPLAIN, DR. AHMED SHATILA, CONSULTANT NEUROLOGIST REVEALS MORE.

Possible complications of the MS patient

According to Dr. Shatila, there are various complications that people with MS may face and suffer from. “First and foremost, there are the health complications of being diagnosed with MS, which can include the uncertainty and

disability that can result from the disease,” he says, especially if they are not on treatment, and multiple studies have shown that medications not only affect relapse rates, but also improve quality of life, reduce disability, and improve mortality in people with MS. Another

complication, he adds, of having MS is the physical disability that can develop over the course of the illness, necessitating the use of a walker, cane, or even a wheelchair, which in and of itself poses significant challenges in terms of work.

14Sep/Oct 2022

Cases in the UAE

We do not know exactly how many MS cases exist in the UAE, tells Dr. Shatila. “MS is thought to affect between 1500 and 2000 people in the UAE,” he says, and as mentioned, one of the advantages of establishing a national register is that we would be able to obtain accurate data on the number of persons with MS not only in terms of numbers, but also in terms of age, distribution, nationality, gender, disease severity, and type of MS they may have. “A national register would provide answers to all of these issues,” he says.

MS rates after COVID 19

There is no evidence or statistics to imply that the number of cases

of MS has increased as a result of COVID 19, whether in the UAE or elsewhere in the world, he explains. “However, many physicians in the UAE believe that the number of people diagnosed with MS is increasing,” he says, and this could be attributable to the fact that there is greater awareness, that individuals are more aware of the illness and, as a result, are more likely to be diagnosed. He adds, “Diagnosis of the illness can be made earlier and due to the fact that the health care infrastructure in the UAE is very strong and that patients who develop any consistent symptoms, such as weakness, visual problems, or any balance problems, can see a neurologist very quickly.” And this is thought to be one of the reasons

why physicians are seeing more cases, but the exact answer is not known. But it does not appear that COVID 19 increases the risk of MS.

The digital infrastructure developed by the UAE increases the engagement between doctors and patients, reveals Dr. Shatila. He adds, “We are lucky in the UAE to have a robust infrastructure consisting of high speed internet, which was extremely important during COVID, and when patients with MS were unable to come to the hospital because they may be immunosuppressed due to their medications.” Coming to the hospital, especially during COVID, may increase their risk and burden if they contract the illness. “We were able to use teleconsultations of video calls during COVID, which reduced the number of physical visits between physicians and patients in the hospital. Nonetheless, their care was not jeopardized.” They were able to get the medications they needed. Medications were delivered and their health was improved. At the same time, physicians were able to follow patients and determine if there was any progression, any new symptoms that had appeared, and if it weren’t for the UAE and its very robust infrastructure, this could have posed serious setbacks and limitations in the care that was delivered and is being delivered to our patients. You Need
Ask Your Aesthetician 16Sep/Oct 2022

When it comes to skin treatments, one size definitely does not fit all – which is what makes that initial meeting with your aesthetician so important. From identifying the right treatment, to what comes after your appointment, this is your chance to map out your entire skin strategy. Selfologi advises the top five questions they recommend asking to get the most from your consultation.

What’s my skin type?

A lot of us think we know our skin type, but we might be wrong. And when we’re trying to treat something different to our reality, we can end up causing a whole new wave of issues for our complexion – something that can only be resolved by knowing the truth once and for all. Luckily, this kind of thing is second nature to any aesthetician. By examining your skin, they’ll not only be able to give you a solid definition of sensitive, oily, dry, or combination, but also set your skincare routine – and treatment plan – on the right track.

certain amount of time before undergoing another treatment, your aesthetician’s advice is priceless when it comes to making the most of your results and avoiding any unwelcome side effects.

What’s the recovery time?

resolved in just three sessions of microneedling, while others will take longer to reverse the damage. The only way to know for sure is by having a frank conversation with your aesthetician about your expectations.

Your aesthetician should always be your go-to on this one, as advice differs so much caseto-case. Treatments such as chemical peels, fillers, or Botox can come with complicated precare and after-care requirements.

Whether it’s skipping the gym, pressing pause on using retinol or AHAs, or waiting a

It’s tough to get a one hundred percent accurate estimate for your recovery. While it’s easy to say skin will be red or irritated for a week after a chemical peel, or that laser skin resurfacing may cause dryness for up to two weeks, the reality is that everyone’s skin is different. The good news is that getting up close and personal with your skin gives your aesthetician better insight than anyone. Combined with their own experience practicing your chosen treatment, they’ll be able to timetable your recovery time best – giving you handy foresight when planning posttreatment life.

When will I see results?

Everyone’s skin is different. For example, some cases of hyperpigmentation may be

With a clear treatment plan, you’ll have an idea of what’s possible – and when you’ll reap the benefits.

How can I make the most of my results?

Most skin treatments are a marathon, not a sprint. One day your cheeks start to look glowier, your fine lines seem smoother, and those acne marks that hung around for months’ post-breakout finally begin to make their exit. It’s an unmatched feeling – and one that can last longer when you take the right steps. From complementary treatments to the skincare that’ll make your glow go even further, your aesthetician is there to guide you every step of the way H

The brainchild of sisters Sophiya and Sarah Faizal, Paus is a unique cafe and community space where you can take a break from everyday life. Here you will find delicious food and coffee, talks, workshops, treatments, and a meditation room. HEALTH met with the dynamo to discuss their journey to Paus and what makes them tick.

Sophiya Sarah
18Sep/Oct 2022

The Impetus to Paus;

Sophiya: We started Paus purely because of our lifestyle. We’re Indian, but we grew up in the UAE. For us as a family, we all played tennis and health was a core value for us. But health usually meant being physically fit. And a few years ago, we both went through

At Paus, we have a café serving healthy food, coffee, smoothies; for classes, we have packages so you can do a treatment package or just a class package; and a lounge where we do a lot of workshops and talks. We want more people to get into looking after themselves rather than waiting to get sick.

our own mental health journeys with depression and anxiety and we both know that health is much more. It’s also sleep, nutrition, hormones and so on. There are many layers to it and we are 20-something-year-olds and figured out that this is actually what health is—we haven’t learned this before. From the cultures we come from, being Indian and growing up in a very Arab culture, there is so much in our culture, like ginger shots and turmeric lattes that help in taking care of yourself. So we said let’s start a business that helps you figure out what your balance is and looks at the different aspects of health.

Five things you can’t live without

Sarah: I would say family; meditation; sunshine; music; and my pets.

Sophia: Family is number one; working out which is one of my core values; grounding; travel; and I need alone time.

Suggestions to pause everyday

Sarah: I think it can be different things for different people. So for example, if you feel like running, running is a way of taking a pause; if you like meditation then just do that. I think just finding five minutes a day to do something for yourself is so important and that will make you one hundred percent more productive. So I suggest to find an activity that you feel helps you connect with yourself; whether it is grounding, meditation, drawing, but make sure you do it consistently every day for at least five minutes.

A conversation about mental health with the youth

Sophiya: I think it’s extremely important; so many kids message us on Instagram that they feel their problems aren’t valid enough because their parents’ might be going through something more serious and grown-up. Maybe for adults, these might be small, but for kids its huge. It’s so important to validate these feelings because that’s how they will accept it and process these emotions.

19Sep/Oct 2022

Key aspects to incorporate in kids’ lives

Sarah: I think the first thing is emotional intelligence and understanding their emotions and what/how to deal with them, making kids understand that it’s not a bad thing to be sad and we all go through these things and it’s about finding solutions for it. I think as a child, it should be inculcated that it’s OK to feel upset. It’s all awareness of emotions and its fine to feel them. Secondly, meditation for kids, teaching kids to be grounded, without making it a chore. Some kind of creative activity is very important, for us, sports was a huge practice that helped us develop other aspects to our personality.

Three key elements that keep you motivated

Sophiya: The first thing is gratitude-every day I wake up and I start my day with thanks even on

a bad day, I will look for things to be grateful in the day and it really shifts my mind-set to be more optimistic. Secondly, I feel like I am doing something that is aligned to me. I know with Paus and what we are doing that it feels right. And finally, the people around us, the team we have and our family; it’s an environment.

Sarah: First, understanding that the world is not just you, the world is connected; we are all connected. When you do one good thing it affects one person and the next; so it’s a butterfly effect. I think understanding that we are all one is a driving factor to do more good in the world. The second one is pride in my culture and background; I have realized that there is so much in cultures that we can share and we can be proud of. The last one is wanting to share my journey; knowing this is information which I can share with the younger generation.

The kinds of physical fitness you practice and its importance

Sarah: I try to do different forms of activities; so sometimes I will do cardio and sometimes I will lift weights, or practice yoga and Pilates. The reason I do this is a few years ago I was only doing cardio just because I wanted to lose weight and look a certain way. I realized how much harm I was doing to my body; I was not losing weight because my body couldn’t handle one form of exercise. But as soon as I started incorporating slower forms like yoga and Pilates, I realized that my stress levels were reduced and my body was responding much better. And this ties into why exercise is so important for mental health because as soon as you work

out in a way that is good for your body, your mind starts to slow down and your mental health gets much better and the body responds much better.

Sophiya: I try to do a workout four times a week because I love the gym and I love strength training so this is what I do. But my slower movement is daily one-hour walks which really helps because I am moving my body, but mentally I have set out the time for myself and I feel more confident.

Three foods for health

Sarah: I think going back to the basics and adding more fruits and vegetables into the diet makes the biggest difference. Just by adding one cup of salad to your lunch for example, you automatically are doing your body good. Also adding one type of protein, even if you are vegan. Protein is important for the muscular regeneration and also, ensure that you are hydrated.

20Sep/Oct 2022

Sophiya: Before looking at what foods you should and shouldn’t eat, look at your relationship with food because it’s not just about nutrients, but if you feel guilty about eating something, your body will actually digest it differently. If you are having chocolate cake with your family, be happy, and the food will digest optimally.

Empowering kids by getting them involved

Sophiya: Just knowing where our food is coming from helps increase a child’s knowledge about nutrition and food and hopefully, it instils curiosity in them. We always say that people tend to say that wellness or learning about these things can seem intimidating or boring, but if you do it in an activity that you are enjoying, you automatically learn these things and you want to be better and healthier as a result.

Teens and devices

Sarah: I feel that when we focus on the detoxing off the gadgets aspect, it automatically makes it restrictive and makes you want to have it more. For me, technology exists, but when I am doing something that’s so much fun, then I don’t need my phone. When I am part of a community or around friends and we are doing an activity, I am not focusing on social media because I am getting that interaction in real life. Basically any kind of sports or creative arts helps; any activity that involves other people is a great way of disconnecting from the phone.

Three most important daily habits:

Sophiya: I have a great mental hack I do daily; sometimes you don’t want to work out, eat healthy or do a particular activity. So I wake up every day and tell myself ‘I get to do this’ which instantly switches it from ‘I have to do this’. It suddenly takes it from a place of need to a place of gratitude and makes it more amazing. The second thing I do is I drink warm water every morning with lemon which kick starts my metabolism. And lastly, I always do some kind of movement and believe that working out daily is important.

WHY IS SELF-AWARENESS KEY TO OUR GROWTH? 22Sep/Oct 2022

In order to live your best life, embrace your most authentic self, and understand your core beliefs and intentions; self-awareness is pivotal for keeping yourself successful and motivated. Sarmistha Mitra, Founder & CEO of The Wellbeing Sanctuary and Holistic Health Expert provides tips on learning self-awareness and why it’s vital for a happy and successful life.

WHAT IT MEANS

According to Mitra, self-awareness is a term used to represent that state of mind when you are aware of your emotions, your thoughts, your choices, and the reason behind all of those. “This clarity helps you to be balanced in your understanding of the others in your environment and create a harmonious society,” she says, “there is no shame in accepting that we all function from fallacies.” Self-awareness leads to psychological maturity. If we had an unpleasant experience in the past, then most of our choices in the present are maligned by the judgment of that past event, she says. And it is this that keeps us psychologically immature. She adds, “I would consider someone self-aware if they can answer all the ‘whats’ and the ‘whys’.”

WHY IT’S SO IMPORTANT

Self-aware also means being realistic with your expectations, and being aware of the variables and

components which aren’t in your control, she says. “Selfawareness also helps you stay connected to your authentic self,” she says, so, even when you are stretching your arms to touch the sky, your feet will be well fixed into the ground beneath you. In fact, Mitra firmly believes that selfawareness programs should be mandatory once children reach their teens. She elaborates, “Teens today hardly find time to explore anything outside their curriculum, thus it would be best to begin this training in school as a part of their weekly program.” We can create fun, and interactive sessions to engage them and create curiosity to discover themselves.

THE QUESTIONS THAT CAN ASCERTAIN SELF-AWARENESS

We have we heard the term ‘being in the present’, but do we truly understand it? “If we can ask ourselves the below questions before taking action on the choice we made, then we may have the clarity of what truly needs to be done in the present,” she says. “A few

questions help me understand if a person is self-aware and are as follows.” One is ‘do you know what you are thinking?’ Another is ‘do you know why you are thinking what you are thinking?’ Also, ‘do you know what you are feeling?’ Others include ‘why are you feeling what you are feeling?’; ‘what choice are you making?’; ‘why are you choosing it?’; and ‘what does that tell you about yourself?’ Mitra explains, “I can guarantee that 99 people out of 100 will answer ‘I don’t know’ to most of the questions above. Yet, they are living a state of self-ignorance. Most of the choices they are making are functions of fallacies based on their perception of life in the childhood. And these fallacies act as malwares in our functional software. This slowly corrupts the hardware, and causes crisis. This crisis, in the long run may even appear as diseases in the body.”  H

Positive Parenting and How It Can Make Your Child More Resilient

Considered an extremely effective parenting style, the premise of positive parenting is to focus on the strengths of your child instead of his/her weaknesses. Dr. Ali Ali, Consultant Family Medicine reveals how this parenting style works.

Dr. Ali Ali
24Sep/Oct 2022

Background

Positive parenting is the result of Austrian psychologist Alfred Alder, who in the 1900s, felt that children inherently need to feel connected to their environment and to those around them. Children thrive when they are in a responsive and interactive environment and this sets the tone for adulthood.

According to Dr. Ali, positive parenting is a method of caring for a child where the parent is sensitive to the individual child’s needs, addressing the challenges that are more common during childhood. He adds, “Examples include where the parent does not use harsh punishment to correct problematic behavior, but instead would proactively address the child’s emotional needs

through positive interactions. Another good example is praising specific actions through words instead of using bribes or rewards.”

The impact of positive parenting

Research published in the Journal of Clinical Adolescent Psychology showed that positive parenting led to much lower instances of childhood depression compared to harsher styles of discipline, points out Dr. Ali. “We also know that through positive parenting, the stress of parents could be reduced and is likely to increase a happier environment at home,” he says. “Positive parenting leads to better trust between the child and the parent as well as a much more approachable communication channel between the two; this ultimately helps develop the child’s own self-esteem as they adapt to the environment surrounding them.”

Giving regular reassurance to the child as opposed to punishment can help the child have a positive approach to life as they grow. They will develop positive behavior because they will see mistakes and imperfections as opportunities for improvement rather than negative things that bring punishment and detract from their self-esteem.

The best ways to discipline children

The best way to discipline your child when there is unwanted behavior, explains Dr. Ali, could include things such as saying no to rewards, disciplining and not punishing as well as trying to get to the root of the problem and addressing it. “Many experts believe that there is commonly something motivating a child’s negative behavior.”

Tips for Creating a Positive Parenting Experience

Focus on what you can control as a parent.

Discipline and not punish, they are two different things.

Be consistent and fair in your approach to the child.

Try to get to the root cause of the child’s negative behavior, wherever possible.

Seek medical help if you are really struggling, including family counselling where appropriate. H (Credit: Dr. Ali)

Why Kids Need a Role Model Now More Than Ever

With the world becoming a more complex place to live and thrive, younger generations are exposed to excessive information and more images than ever, and it becomes challenging for them to distinguish their degree of importance. Dominique Antiglio, best-selling author, qualified Sophrologist and Founder of BeSophro.com, reveals the reasons why a role model or a mentor is essential to help kids connect to themselves, feel valued, and how to make sense of this information.

What kids can learn from the right role model

According to Antiglio, in her opinion, the right role model is the one that empowers you. She adds, “A person you feel positively inspired by, safe with, and that instils curiosity, confidence and the desire to explore new facets of yourself. Or simply someone who gives you a moment of undivided attention and love.”

What kids/teens can learn from a role model

She reiterates, “If I think about my own mentor who I met at age 15 as I was experiencing health issues, she opened up a whole new world

of possibilities for me. She was a Sophrologist in my native Switzerland and she taught me simple exercises based on breathing, relaxation, visualization and movement to help me connect and listen to my body and empower me with a new level of confidence and strength.

She adds, “I realized that the symptoms I was experiencing at the

26Sep/Oct 2022

time were linked with the fact I hadn’t been supported to deal with my emotions and therefore, I was reaching my limit emotionally. I understood that emotions are part of life, that they can be processed and can contribute to make me feel in the driving seat of my life.” Basically, a role model is someone that teaches others by their own behaviors, knowledge and presence. There are many qualities that children can learn from role models, she adds, from perseverance, self-care, resilience, and communication to emotional balance, kindness, curiosity or contribution. “It is a lot about what we wrongly call ‘soft skills’ as these skills are probably becoming the most important ones to learn to deal with today’s modern world,” she says. “Academic knowledge is something that can always be learned, but soft skills take longer to get if you haven’t been exposed early and they influence the quality of your life and your resilience and happiness.”

Parents being inspiring towards their kids

Being true to ourselves and honest with our children as much as possible and by looking after ourselves and journeying with awareness, Antiglio reveals can help parents become inspiring towards their own kids. She adds, “That means acceptance of our imperfections and working on them. By trying to be happy with who we are and creating the life we want and deserve.”

Tips for Parents and Teachers to Help Inculcate a Sense of Inspiration in their Kids/Teens:

• Engage, expect and speak to them in an age appropriate way. We often expect a lot too soon. Understanding what the brain is able to do at each age is a way to respect their tempo and manage our own expectations.

• Listen to them. We can’t expect our kids to come and look for support through difficult situations if when

they were small, we never gave them space to listen to their pain or struggles with the simplest aspects of life.

• Spend time in nature. Nature and exercise is a great way to balance the impact of screens and modern life.

• Teach them Sophrology. Practice a few minutes a week with them doing some breathing, relaxation or body awareness exercises.

• When you are worried or have strong emotions, explain to them how you deal with it. This is such a great skill to have in life.

• Believe they can teach you something. Being curious around them is giving them the confidence they need to learn and thrive.

• Don’t think you need to be perfect. Embrace your flaws and be yourself and apologize when needed. They will love you for it.

Playa Beach Club

Tucked at The Club at West Beach adjacent to Eva Beach House and SĀN Beach club, this is an indoor and outdoor boho themed venue where you can dine by the beachside facing the stunning skyline of Dubai or enjoy your dining experience indoors. Boasting one of the only swimming pools on the Palm West Beach, you can also plan your experience with a dip in their chilled swimming pool overlooking the Dubai Eye. The culinary ingenuity of chef Carlo Valentino is a fusion of Nikkei and Peruvian flavors that take you on a culinary journey traversing Peru’s unique landscape. Fish fresh from the Pacific, healthy quinoa recipes and tasty grilled fish are among the culinary highlights.

A Peruvian-Japanese inspired menu, there is a focus on ceviche, as well as fresh seafood, fresh Grade 5 Wagyu beef, lamb, vegetables, and chicken. We loved the ceviche playa classic and seabass tiradito, and enjoyed the Wagyu Makimono and fresh salmon nigiri served with chimichurri. Other highlights included lomo saltado, the Antichuchera, and the Leche de Tigre. From the Josper, we loved the 48-hours short ribs and the

Garth

Putting a new spin on gourmet dining with influences from Italy, Greece, and Southern France, Garth is a sophisticated Southern European neo bistro that is more contemporary minimalist with neutral tones, a beautiful al fresco seating area, a shiny white baby grand piano, and a display of pampas grass. This chic and stylish venue offers a blend of contemporary minimalism as well as more traditional design features.

We began with some fresh breads followed by ceviche with popcorn, comprised of coconut tiger’s milk and the chef ’s special sauce. We also loved the carpaccio, which is usually made of thinly sliced beef, however, this was thinly sliced zucchini, and my all-time favorite burrata, with Uzbeki tomatoes and a mellow flavor with hints of tanginess lent from the balsamic. The mains included beef cheek pacheri—slow cooked beef

cheeks served with parmesan chips, veal jus, along with truffle mash, and their Wagyu burger. And for dessert, who can go wrong with tiramisu, which is

rolled out on a cart and freshly sliced.

grilled beautifully at the table and served with corn tortillas. The ceviche was top notch, with two different varieties: the traditional fish and the other unique one was the mushroom. The tacos platter included fish, chicken, tempura, and avocado tacos. The menu here changes every week and so you can expect to find completely new dishes other than the ones mentioned. Of the mains, we tucked into a flavorful Spanish fish as well as a moreish beef and mashed potatoes. The desserts followed the same theme with Tres Leches, and my favorite freshly fried churros with a caramel and a chocolate sauce.

a valuable support for the safety of our healthcare FRONTLINERS

It was during this COVID-19 pandemic and the chaotic situation, that everyone felt the need for quality protective apparels as there was a huge global scarcity of adequate supplies of protective clothing and related equipment. Healthcare workers wear protective clothing (e.g., surgical gowns, isolation gowns, and coveralls) to protect both patients and themselves from the transfer of microorganisms by blood and body fluids. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) like Masks, Gowns, Gloves, Coveralls, Eyewear, etc. were in huge demand as raw material availability was regulated by many countries to meet their in-house requirements. As there was a huge shortage, there was an influx of many new brands, new companies who came into the rescue of meeting the gap in supplies of PPE in the market. The CDC and NIOSH have outlined certain guidelines so that the correct protective clothing is used in such cases. The Association

for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) published a guidance document on selection and use of protective apparel in healthcare facilities. It is hence imperative that a proper selection criteria is maintained whilst using the right apparel in healthcare facilities and it is equally important that manufacturers meet the set guidelines when manufacturing these critical protective apparels that are valuable for the safety of our Front liners and Patients.

In the two decades of unparallel service to the healthcare industry, Royal Care Medical has always strived its best to deliver quality products and meet the requirements of the healthcare workers, who play a vital role in not only combating infectious diseases, but also in taking care of our dear patients. We believe, there should not be any compromise when it comes to protecting our healthcare workers, as they are the soldiers in the forefront

fighting for the health of mankind, which is the health of any Nation. We are proud that our products are manufactured under strict compliance to the set standards of AAMI.

These standards govern the performance requirements of Protective Clothing used in Healthcare settings. There are standard tests to evaluate the barrier effectiveness of such protective clothing viz. Surgical gowns, Isolation gowns, Surgical drapes, etc. Based on these tests, the barrier performance is classified under Level 1 to Level 4 level of protection. It is hence imperative that all Protective Clothing be selected based on the compliance of manufacturers to the set standards. The Safety of our Front-Line workers, our healthcare FRONTLINERS is of utmost importance when it comes to taking care of our patients.

Unsightly skin tags

The question: I have developed skin tags on my upper eyelid. What are these and can these be removed safely?

Dr. Faisal Ameer, Consultant Plastic Surgeon, responds, “Skin tags are tiny skin growths that protrude from the body on a slender stalk. These are caused by excessive cell proliferation of the top layers of the skin. About 25 percent of people acquire skin tags, these are usually harmless and do not require any treatment. Some individuals want to get rid of them for aesthetic reasons. Rarely, if large enough, skin tags around the eyes can obscure field of vision, making removal essential. The various options available with us which are suited for skin tag removal around eyes include: electrosurgerythis method can be very effective, and it also prevents any bleeding after removal as this device transmits an electric current to burn off the skin tag. Local anesthesia is usually used to make the procedure painless. Surgical excision-a small pair of sterile scissors or surgical scalpel is used to cut smaller skin tags off. Sometimes, an electrical probe may be used to stop any bleeding that might occur. Cryotherapy-we can use cryotherapy to freeze the skin tag off. To do so, a pair of forceps is soaked in liquid nitrogen, then the skin tag is pinched with the forceps to freeze it off. You should not attempt to remove skin tags by yourself as it can lead to partial removal and sometimes infection. It is recommended that you find a board certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist in your vicinity to find which method suits your needs best.

Toddler and tooth decay

The question: My toddler is showing signs of tooth decay despite our brushing his tiny milk teeth. Do milk teeth require fillings?

Dr. Ahmed Adel Salama, Specialist Pedodontist responds, “Milk teeth are of great importance to the child for which they are used in manipulation of child’s food and development of speech in pronouncing sounds like F, V, S. Moreover, milk teeth are used to maintain the space in the dental arch as well as serve cosmetic functions. The initial visit to the dental office, which should usually be by six months of child age, is critical for early examination of the milk teeth and proper intervention if needed. Cavitation occurs in the milk teeth requiring prompt dental care just as the permanent teeth do. This is called Early Childhood Caries ‘ECC’ which exists due to improper child feeding that, if not corrected, might eventually lead to complete tooth destruction affecting the child’s psychology and function. An early dental examination is usually recommended, where the child might be advised to undergo professional treatment under advanced dental procedures. Also, the guardian will be instructed about the child’s home dental routine care, which will help to maintain good oral and general health on the long term.

A biting toddler

The question: My two--year-old has started biting everyone, including us and his siblings. It is becoming embarrassing and hard to manage. How do we teach him to stop?

Dr. Sana Kausar, Consultant Family Medicine responds, “There are a few reasons for toddlers to start biting. They are learning about their world, their bodies, and how cause and effect works. They may have figured out that biting gets a reaction, and therefore, use it as a new way to seek attention. It is also a way for them to test their limits, as well as to express their feelings of anger and frustration. Although this is a very common occurrence between ages one to three, there should be zero tolerance, but without ‘punishing’ a child as most children don’t realize that biting hurts. They may be imitating something they have seen, or genuinely be exploring things, which is why things end up in the mouth. Some solutions include be firm with clear instructions: ‘no biting’ or ‘biting hurts’. Remaining calm is important, as children take their cues from parents, and will calm down faster. Another solution is to comfort the victim by redirecting your attention to the child who was bitten. Deal with the other person/ child as necessary, including cleaning with soap and water, if required. It is normal to be upset if you realize you have hurt someone and learning to help comfort the victim or apologize is a good way to proceed. Also, redirect, as at this age if emotions are running high, divert the attention to a more positive activity, such as playing a game or listening to music. Also, look for patterns; try to work out when the biting occurs. If your child continues, then speak to a pediatrician to exclude other reasons, such as expressive speech delay, or sensory processing disorder.
