I recently attended a leadership roundtable with other business development managers, and one simple yet powerful question was posed: “How do you define success?”
It gave me pause, not because I didn’t have an answer, but because the answer can be deeply personal and evolving. If you ask a high school student, they may respond with money or material items as a measurement of success. If you ask an 80-year-old, they may respond with relationships as a measurement of their success. My point is that everyone defines success differently, and it may change over time.
In our fast-paced construction industry, we often tie success to numbers and dollars: permits pulled, homes sold, profit margins met. But for those of us in the home building community, success runs deeper than metrics. Success is the satisfaction of seeing a once empty lot transform into a place where families will create lifelong memories. It’s a young couple holding keys to their first home. It’s a neighborhood filled with lights, laughter and life. All built from the ground up with purpose and care.
At HBAL, I believe our members define success not just by what we build, but who we build for and how well we serve them. We are proud to be part of a profession where success is measured in homes, not just houses.
HBAL Staff
Michaela Schwarten, Jennie Korth, Laure Husmann
So, how would you define success? Let’s keep asking, keep building and keep raising the standard, together.

Tell us about your family: Jackie and I celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary this past May. We have two daughters and a son—Lennon, Eleanor and Wyatt— and a dog named Ben, a 1-year-old German Shepherd/ Husky/Lab mix who looks like a big black wolf.
Greatest talent you don’t utilize in your daily work life: I have the voice of an angel. Some say it’s a mix between Fergie and Jesus.
Someone who’s made a big impact on your life? My mother, for various reasons. Not only did she bring me into this world, but she taught me how to be caring and compassionate. She was a shining example of how to treat others with kindness even if it's not always reciprocated. She was always there for me when I needed anything. She is the best!
What do you love most about your job? I love being of service and helping people. It feels great to know we’ve fixed something for someone or helped them complete a project.
Career advice you live by: Always be kind and polite to everyone—you never know when you might need help from them down the road. People remember how you treated them.
What’s one skill you’d like to develop or sharpen this year? Time management. I often spend too much time on certain tasks when I should be moving on to the next thing.
What are your future career goals? To support the continued growth of Lincoln Glass, my department and our services. I love expanding our customer base and building new relationships.
How long have you been a member of HBAL? I believe it’s been roughly 8 years.
How has your career benefited from being a member of HBAL? It’s helped bring new customers to our business and has fostered great relationships with other businesses and trades.
Tips or advice for new HBAL members: Attend events and keep your ears and eyes open for opportunities.
