Sisters and Brothers in Christ: Greetings in the Name of Jesus Christ -- the One Who Is, Was, and Is to Come!

Church. These churches have discerned that they disagree with the current stance of The Book of Discipline concerning homosexuality. Their departure grieves my heart as I have served as pastor to several churches, and we have been partners together in ministry for decades. These churches comprise 33% of our churches, yet only 20% of our total members. While I lament the departures of brothers and sisters in Christ, I remain excited about our ministry with the 80% who will continue in partnership across eastern North Carolina.

As I write this note, I am preparing to attend a special called conference for the North Carolina Annual Conference. The North Carolina Annual Conference currently has about 800 United Methodist churches stretching across eastern North Carolina. At this special conference, we are asked to vote on allowing 250 churches to disaffiliate from The United Methodist

In January 2020, our church council affirmed the desire of Haymount UMC to remain United Methodist. Today I want to remind you that we gather this weekend as Haymount United Methodist Church to celebrate our anniversary.

Mission: Making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world Rev. Allen Bingham Lead Pastor

Seventy-seven years ago, our mothers and fathers at Hay Street UMC noted the emerging Haymount subdivision and suggested that someone plant a new church to reach this new community. So they came and began worshiping first in the Confederate Widow's Home, then in a new sanctuary (our current fellowship hall), later moving worship into our present sanctuary, and finally adding a contemporary service in the New Life Center.

This month's worship has reminded us of the rich legacy we inherit at Haymount UMC as we remembered the saints who died this past year, introduced our congregation to our legacy-giving programs, and tomorrow we celebrate our anniversary. I would like to invite you to remember the metaphor of the asymmetric parabolic oscillation of the swingset I talked about last week. To get a swing to work, we, as children, learned how to lean back and point our feet forward. When we reached the extent of our forward motion, we leaned forward and tucked our legs underneath us as we flew backward. Ultimately the motion of our forward motion in the swing matches our ability to go backward. As we lean into the future of ministry at Haymount we are only enriched by our ability to remember our origins. When we can lean back two-thousand years into the everlasting arms of Jesus, we are enabled to point our feet into a future far beyond whatever we can ask or imagine. So listen to the news that may emerge this weekend about the church splitting-it isn't! Then join us for worship this Sunday as we celebrate our life together at Haymount. I promise you we will remember that Jesus -- One Who Is, the One Who Was, and the One Who Is to Come -- remains our King! We will worship together and commit to continuing our work together, walk together, and talk together as One body, empowered by One Spirit, hearing One call, serving One Lord, celebrating One baptism, living One faith, and worshiping One God and Father of us all. See you Sunday!

Grace and Peace, Allen Bingham, Pastor

HUMC Endowment Committee Kicks Off our

Planned Giving Campaign

We are excited! The Endowment Committee is kicking off our Planned Giving: Leaving Your Legacy Campaign this November.

A big thanks goes to Rick Booth, Donald Warren and Rich Bowlin (CEO of the United Methodist Foundation) for starring in our initial Planned Giving videos! We hope you enjoyed our videos and learned more about Planned Giving and Leaving Your Legacy in general. For further information, these videos and our Planned Giving brochure are now on the church’s website. (Continued on the following page)

In January and February, we will have more videos at the 11 AM service. Plus, we will have luncheon educational workshops with professionals who can answer questions about adding Haymount to your will and giving some tips for seniors in general.

We believe that creating a will is about deciding how you want to leave your mark on all you care about -- your family and your favorite organizations. During the upcoming months, thanks for considering a Planned Gift through your will or trust for HUMC to ensure you are a vital part of the future of your church forever!

Lovefeasts were observed among the Moravians in Czechoslovakia as early as 1727 reaching North America in 1835 with the first being celebrated in Savannah Georgia. The custom of special beeswax candles adorned with red crepe was a later addition first appearing in 1762 at Bethabara and Bethania, North Carolina.

A Christmas to Remember

This year, three different recipients have been chosen - one local, one national and one international.

The local recipient is The Lodge, which has outgrown what the kitchen there and needs to update it. Appliances have already been taken care of, but cabinets, plumbing, etc. need to be changed. Their need is $10-15,000.

The national recipient is UMCOR for Hurricane Disaster Work in Florida to help with recovery from not just one hurricane this fall, but two.

The international recipient is UMCOR for drought and famine relief in eastern Africa. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is actively supporting efforts in East Africa to alleviate hunger brought on by a severe drought in the re gion. Emergency grants to partners in East African countries are providing for the most basic needs for people who left everything behind as their food, agriculture and livestock failed.

Hussein, an elderly father of eight, and his family recently arrived at a camp for displaced people in Beled-Hawa, Somalia. “The people left behind, they have no chance,” he said. “It is just a matter of time until they die. Even here we might die because we have nothing.” The number of people facing crisis hunger levels in Somalia is expected to rise from 5 million to more than 7 million in the coming months. More than 18 million people face severe hunger in Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya as they struggle to survive the worst drought in 40 years. UMCOR is re sponding to this unfolding crisis.

Fogleman Missionary Update

Drs. Lynn and Sharon Fogleman are two of the missionaries Haymount supports. For the past few years they have been serving in Africa. Their situation has evolved. During their recent visit, they explained that the primary thing they are doing is leading Biblebased Trauma Healing training sessions in Uganda, Kenya and South Sudan. There has been much unrest in that area of Africa, severe drought, many refugee situations, Covid, and now an outbreak of ebola. They have been training community leaders who,in turn, will train other leaders to work with their people.

(Continued on the nex page)

Mission: Making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world 9

Fogleman Missionary Update Continued

The second thing they are doing is working with Greenlight Medical which takes 4th year medical school students to Ghana, where they have the opportunity to work in the local hospitals and clinics to see if they are called to medical mission work.

Woven in with this, they make available scholarships to individuals in those countries to attend school in pursuit of degrees in medical areas, frequently nursing.

Please keep them in your prayers.

Cumberland Road Elementary School Program

Dayton Dawson Endowment Gift Provides Books for Cumberland Road Elementary Students

Haymount UMC is committed to making a positive impact on children in our community. In 2013, The Cumberland Road Elementary School Partnership (CRESP) was launched. Through the CRESP program we are able to reach a population of children who need as sistance through mentoring, tutoring, collect ing school supplies and offering support and encouragement to teachers.

Last May, we were able to purchase and give each student at Cumberland Road Elementary, a book on their level to enjoy over the summer. Studies show that students lose reading skills over the summer. By giving each child their own book, we hope we are able to make a difference, encourage a love for reading and let each student know that their friends at Haymount UMC care about them!

The purchase of 500 books from Scholastic was made possible by a very generous donation to CRESP by the Dayton Daw son Endowment. The younger grades received 2 books each while older students received one chapter book. Donations such as this allow Haymount UMC to continue making a difference in the lives of these children- thank you!

Thank you also to our church family for your generous school supply donation! They were overwhelmed with gratitude to receive such generous donations of school supplies and back packs! Are you interested in joining our team and volun teering at Cumberland Road Elementary School (K-5) as a mentor, tutor, lunch buddy, classroom volunteer or after school program? Please call or email Mandy Brown Mandybrown20@gmail.com, 910-624-6510. We are looking for new volunteers to join our team and we would love to have you!

Newsletter Changes Coming in 2023

In 2023 our monthly newsletter, The Haymount Happenings, will become a black-and-white publication to help keep production costs within budget. Articles to be included will need to be in a text-only format, because photographs do not reproduce well in black and white. Line-art and clipart that are already grayscale could be included. We may publish a few color editions throughout the year, perhaps at Easter, Fall Kickoff, and Christmas, that can include pictures and photographs. As you prepare your submissions in the coming year, please keep these changes in mind.

CHURCH NEWS

Haymount began a partnership with Cumberland Road Elementary (CRESP) in 2013, that began with the idea of helping children in need! Since that time, our volunteers have made a difference in the lives of so many children! Whatever your gifts, there are several ways that you can be a vital part of this ministry!

- Volunteer one hour each week in the classroom mentoring children K-5th grade.

- Lunch buddy- just hang out with students during lunch- male mentors are especially needed. Lunch times run between 11am-1pm- (you can pick the 30 min time that works best for you).

- Reading buddy

- Classroom volunteer tutoring, reading, filing papers, etc.

- Special celebrations, etc.

They are excited to welcome much needed volunteers back into the school and will work with your schedule and age preference! There is need all around! If a weekly commitment is too much, sign up to help with special celebrations

Please fill out a quick volunteer registration (or renew if you have volunteered in the past) and select Cumberland Road Elementary School. All volunteers must be registered and cleared - www.ccsvolunteers.com.

Please contact Mandy Brown if you are interested in becoming part of our team on a weekly basis or occasionally for special celebrations. We are looking for new volunteers to join our program! Mandybrown20@gmail.com, 910-624-6510
