March-April 2025
For me, sharing a truckload of apples provided by the Society of St. Andrew with our community was one of the most serendipitous events of my thirtyplus years of ministry
Pictures of the people gathering apples and sharing recipes for pies and cobblers were our most frequently shared social media posts of the past year Then we turned around a few months later and lived into our growing generosity as our Christmas to Remember offering increased by over 40% as we responded to specific needs at Myrover Reese flood

Sunday, March 16 at 2:00 PM
On Sunday, March 16, Haymount UMC will be welcoming Ballet Exaltation for a performance of “Exalt His Name.” This event will take place in our New Life Center. Admission is free, and this performance is open to the public!
A ministry of Briarwood Presbyterian Church, Ballet Exaltation is the student ballet company of Briarwood Ballet in Birmingham, AL. Ballet Exaltation trains dancers in excellent ballet technique and equips them to use their gifts to minister to others and serve the Lord Jesus Christ.
“Exalt His Name” is a beautiful time of worship through the art of dance. Ballet Exaltation will perform several pieces that depict the love of God, reveal his presence in our darkest days, and provide a clear presentation of the gospel. We hope you will leave encouraged by our God and ready to exalt his name with us!
The Hardest Part
Lent Study with Kate Bowler

This Lent season we will be following Kate Bowler’s series “The Hardest Part.”
Kate Bowler describes her series as a challenge for us to “Embrace Lent as it is-raw, honest, and tender” and to “stop pretending we’re holding it all together.” As always, Kate Bowler’s study will challenge us to leave behind our traditional thoughts surrounding this time of the year, and embrace where we stand currently, and the life around us.
Daily individual devotionals are available for you to follow along, as well as group devotionals! For more information on resources available, contact our Church Office!

Family Breakfast
Join us on Sunday, April 27 at 10am in the New Life Center for our Family Breakfast. We will be having a waffle bar with whipped cream and sprinkles! and have been featured on multiple recordings and radio performances.
Admission to this concert is free, but a free-will offering of $20 is encouraged For questions or concerns, contact Wes Lockfaw
As we come to the end of Lent, our Chancel Choir, Orchestra, and guest musicians will present the powerfully moving “The Seven Last Words of Christ” by Theodore Dubois on Good Friday, April 18.
The first four books of the New Testament record the seven words or sayings said by Jesus on the cross. The major work by Dubois is a musical journey into the depth of sorrow and the weight of these words spoken by Jesus during his final hours. Sacred art will be projected to help elaborate the events of that Good Friday.
This event is part of our Music for a Great Space concert series, and is free and open to the public. It is a free event, but a freewill offering of $20 is encouraged. For questions or concerns, contact Wes Lockfaw.

Inasmuch Breakfast Schedule
How to Get Involved
Did you know that the Inasmuch campus is located in the third poorest zip code in North Carolina (28301)? More than 30% of our population lives in poverty. Every other month, HUMC serves breakfast at Inasmuch and we would love if you would join our team.
Our schedule this year is as follows: March 4, May 6, July 1, September 2, and November 4. All dates are on a Tuesday. We meet at the headquarters building at 7 am and we are generally done by 8:45 am. No experience is necessary; you learn on the job. If you are interested in joining the team or if you want to sign up for a date in advance, please contact Barbara Speir at barbara-speir@nc.rr.com or at barbara@inasmuchfay.org.

Liturgical Ramblings
With Donald Warren
Transfiguration Sunday – March 2
Transfiguration Sunday remembers the story of Jesus on the mountaintop with Moses and Elijah and being transfigured to reveal his glory, in front of Peter, James, and John The voice of God speaks from the cloud and declares that Jesus is the beloved Son of God.
Shrove Tuesday/Mardi Gras – March 4

Shrove Tuesday is the final day of a season before Lent called “Shrovetide,” in which Christians are invited to prepare for Lent by examining their consciences and practicing repentance “Shrive” means to give absolution for sins through the acts of confession and forgiveness Shrove Tuesday is also called Mardi Gras, the final day of the celebrations of Carnival, a festival season with parades and parties leading up to Lent. Shrove Tuesday/Mardi Gras is often marked by eating pancakes, cakes, and desserts, as a final “hoorah!” before Lent begins and these foods are not eaten again until after Easter.
Lent – March 5 – April 19
A forty-day season of penitence and self-reflection that Christians use as a time to prepare themselves for the celebration of Easter through fasting and self-denial. It recalls the forty-day journey of Jesus in the wilderness, where he fasted and prayed and resisted the temptations of the devil. Sundays within Lent are not counted as part of the forty days, because Sundays are always a “little Easter,” a day of remembering the resurrection of Jesus.
Ash Wednesday – March 5
Ash Wednesday is a holy day of prayer and fasting that begins the forty-day season of Lent. Churches hold services inviting believers to a time of Lenten discipline, and it begins by marking the foreheads of the believers with ashes in the shape of a cross. The ashes are made by burning the leaves from Palm Sunday of the preceding year.
Laetere Sunday – March 30
Laetere Sunday is a day of celebration during Lent in which the austerity of Lent is “paused” for one day and the practice of fasting is suspended. It is often called Rose Sunday, because the clergy wear pink vestments instead of deep purple, in recognition of it being a day of celebration. It is also called Mothering Sunday, meaning a celebration of “Mother Churches,” the church in which a believer is baptized and raised In some traditions, Christian will travel home to visit their “Mother Church” on this Sunday
Holy Week – April 13-April 20
Holy Week is a season in which the church remembers the journey of Christ leading up to Easter day, beginning with Palm Sunday. Holy Monday remembers the cursing of the fig tree, the cleansing of the Temple, and the anointing of Jesus at Bethany. Holy Tuesday remembers the instances in the gospel of John where Jesus predicts his death Holy Wednesday, also called Spy Wednesday, remembers the action of Judas Iscariot making a deal with the chief priests and Temple authorities to betray Jesus for thirty pieces of silver.
Palm Sunday – April 13
Palm Sunday remembers the Triumphal Entry, the palm processional into Jerusalem in which branches and cloaks were spread on the road before Jesus as the crowds proclaimed, “Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!” This occurs during the Jewish festival of Passover.
Maundy Thursday – April 17
Maundy Thursday remembers Jesus and the disciples gathering in the Upper Room to celebrate what is now called The Last Supper. The breaking of bread and sharing of wine at this supper become what the church now calls Communion, the Lord’s Supper, or the Eucharist. After supper, they sang a hymn together and went to the Garden of Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives so Jesus could pray. It is in Gethsemane that Judas betrays Jesus.
Good Friday – April 18
Good Friday remembers the crucifixion of Jesus at “the place of the skull,” also called Golgotha or Calvary. Jesus dies around 3:00 pm, and is taken and placed in a tomb, which is then sealed by the Roman authorities.
Holy Saturday – April 19
Holy Saturday remembers “The Harrowing of Hell,” in which Jesus, according to the creeds, “descended into Hell” and preached salvation to all who had died since the beginning of the world. In part, this teaching is a testimony to the fact that Jesus died a physical death and his soul went to the place of the dead just as every human’s soul had done before. In many Christian traditions, Hell is considered empty following the Harrowing of Hell. It is alluded to in scripture in Matthew 12:40, Matthew 27:50-54, Acts 2:24, Acts 2:31, Ephesians 4:9, Colossians 1:18, 1 Peter 3:18-19, and 1 Peter 4:6.
Easter Sunday – April 20
Easter Sunday remembers the resurrection of Jesus, which is recounted in all four gospels. In each of the stories, it is the women who discover the empty tomb and learn of the risen Christ.
Quasimodo Sunday / Thomas Sunday -April 27
The Sunday after Easter is called Quasimodo Sunday from the Latin words for the traditional introit of the day, “Quasi modo géniti infántes, alleluia!” or, “As newborn babes, alleluia!” It is also called Thomas Sunday because the gospel lesson is always the story of Jesus appearing the Disciples without Thomas present, and Thomas doubts their story until Christ appears again when Thomas is with them.

Finance Annual Recap
From your Finance Committee
HUMC experienced many blessings in 2024. With the support of your generous tithes and gifts, Haymount ended the year with a healthy surplus of $67,307. Expenses came in lower than budgeted and your gifts exceeded last year’s needs. With a 2025 budget based on an “abundance mindset,” this surplus will be used across all ministries in 2025. In addition to ending 2024 positively - we’re off to a great start in 2025 with January expenses ($84,320) lower than historical and revenues ($171,330) higher. May God continue to bless HUMC in this new year.

New NLC Roof On The Way
Our New Life Center is going to have a new roof in the very near future! The NLC was constructed between 2005 and 2007, so the roof is almost 20 years old, and it has been leaking in areas for several years now. After seeing multiple proposals, the Trustees have selected Karcher Roofing of Fayetteville to tackle this important project. The flat roof over the center of the NLC will be replaced, as outlined in red in the picture. The roof replacement is expected to cost about $46,000. Some of this will be covered by our maintenance reserve funds, and some will be covered by a loan the Trustees have secured from the North Carolina Conference Board of Missions. If you want to help make this roofing project happen, please make a contribution to our Building Maintenance Fund! As always, thanks for your support!

Stephen Minister Spotlight
Natalie Lewis
My name is Natalie Fowler Lewis. I grew up in Fayetteville, married a USAF fighter pilot, and followed him around the world for 30 years. We returned to Fayetteville in 2021. We have two sons and two grandchildren. I am a retired guidance counselor and before that, an English teacher. In 20 years as a counselor, I believe I helped many teens through the angst and hurdles of high school on to their chosen career paths. I grew up the oldest of five children, the only girl with four younger brothers. God meant for me to be a caregiver so he started my training early. Stephen Ministry is a calling to be a caregiver to people who are hurting. I'm pleased to be counted among the fine members of our community who also answered the call. Little known fact about me: I speak Russian, so if you ever need a translator . . .
