FROM THE PASTOR

Sisters and Brothers:

Gree ngs in the Name of Jesus Christ! The One Who Is, the One Who Was, and the One Who Is to Come!

This month we celebrate comple ng our first year of ministry together. I arrived with the immediate task of assembling a team to con nue guiding this great church in ministry. I am grateful for Donald Warren, Drew Ellis, and Karen Barkman for providing programming wisdom in recent years as our plans unfolded. Jen Rabon, Wes Lockfaw, Steve Goatley, and Rachel Masden joined them throughout the year. Suppor ng this team's work is Nicole Andre, Jennie White, Amy Dean, Susan Eissele, and Anna Bruner. I am thankful that this team played catch-up throughout the year, and we look forward to a year when we can an cipate many of the coming events.

This ministry team is incomplete without the stalwart support of your church council, trustees, finance commi ee, staff -parish rela ons commi ee, and thriving ministry teams filled with persons like you. Together we have raised the resources needed to con nue ministry together, expanded our prac ces of congrega onal care, and reorganized and revitalized our children's and youth ministry. And we are just star ng to hum together in our work! Rachel is introducing new ideas and gatherings for children's ministry, Drew is launching several mission opportuni es this summer, and Wes and Steve are dreaming of new opportuni es to engage our neighborhood with music and the arts.

Again, thank you for walking with Jesus at Haymount United Methodist Church. Let's lean into the future together.

Grace and Peace, Allen Bingham, Pastor

Jesus calls us to join a community that transforms difference into unity as our work con nues. So whether we are young or old, rich or poor, male or female, black or brown red or yellow or white, we somehow are precious in God's sight. Not only are we individually precious, but we are the body of Christ in the world. Together we show others how to live amid the real divisions of the world. We live as One body in One Spirit, with One hope of our calling, One Lord, One faith, One bap sm, One God and Father of us all a God who is above all, through all, and in all (see Ephesians 4:6).

Children and Family Ministries invites Upper Elementary Kids (3rd thru 5th grade) to a day of fun at church! August 11th we'll tee up at Mountasia Mini Golf. May 2023 Mission Trip to Liberia

Middle School Youth Mission Trip—Jeremiah Project

Submi ed by Mark White

In early May, I had the privilege of par cipa ng in a United Methodist Volunteers In Mission (UMVIM) trip to Liberia led by Rev. Bill Haddock. We traveled with a total of 7 members (Rev. Bill, 5 of us from the NC Conference, and 1 from the FL Conference.) Our trip was focused on building a pig slaughterhouse at the Ganta Mission Sta on (GMS). The NC Conference and Haymount UMC have a long history suppor ng GMS. In recent years, one of GMS’ MANY ministries has involved raising pigs to provide piglets to prospec ve pig farmers. This ministry has been so successful that there are many pig farmers in the Ganta area who are raising more pigs than they know what to do with. In fact, before our trip, there was no func onal pig slaughtering facility in the en re country of Liberia.

Our team was on the ground in Ganta for nine days. During this period, with the help of many resourceful and enthusias c Liberian workers, we got the plot cleared and graded, laid the founda on for a 24x48 foot building, had about 1/3 of the concrete block walls raised (the blocks were made by local workers at GMS,) and built the trusses for the roof. We installed a 8x8 foot insulated “CoolBot'' refrigerated storage unit, and provided a refrigerated trailer fabricated at the MERCI Center in Goldsboro. We also brought lots of construc on tools and implements for butchering and dressing pigs, as well as providing classes to pig farmers on safe and healthful butchering prac ces. When the pig slaughterhouse is completed, it will be a unique loca on where pig farmers can bring their pigs, slaughter and butcher them, and either sell them on site, store them safely for future use, or move them to local markets for sale.

On our last day at Ganta, while pu ng finishing touches on the work the team had done, we butchered and cooked a pig in prepara on for our dedica on of the (not yet completed) facility. During the dedica on, among other events, Liberian Annual Conference Bishop Samuel J. Quire, Jr, GMS Director Rev. Priscilla Legay-Jaiah, and Rev. Bill Haddock spoke before the ribbon-cu ng. Of course, everyone present, including all of the local workers, had a feast of Rev. Bill’s BBQ pork, with goat soup and other local delicacies. The rela onships we formed during our trip will con nue to grow as local pig farmers discover what they can do, and as we in the NC Conference figure out how to help them. Rev. Bill Haddock is already planning a return trip in August to address some details we previously overlooked.

In His Service, Mark White

Twice a month, a co-op of pig farmers meets at GMS to share techniques and strategies, and to socialize. On Saturday, May 27, they met at the newly completed pig facility. The structure of the building is complete, but much of the wiring, plumbing, and management remains to be completed.
