A Christmas to Remember 2024

This is the time of year when we start thinking about Christmas to Remember. You are challenged to give as much to our specially chosen projects as you spend on gifts for family and friends The Missions Committee and the Church Council have again chosen three projects to receive our offering Our local project is Myrover Reese Fellowship Home Our US project is hurricane disaster recovery in the mountains of NC Our international project is Impact Global Health Alliance (formerly Curamericas Global) If you choose to participate in this special Christmas offering, you have the option to designate which of the projects you would like your money to support, or to give to Christmas to Remember (in which case, your offering will be divided 3 ways)

Myrover Reese Fellowship Home was started over 50 years ago with a halfway house for recovering alcoholics For years Haymount has supported Myrover Reese by providing Bibles for studies taught by Elizabeth Ramos and Bevan Grice at the home We have also given their Thrift Store many of the items left at the end of our garage sales. There are always needs with a program like this. Their greenhouses offer residents a work to do The frames are up They need to be re-equipped to grow vegetables and flowers for the residents to eat and sell Furnishings in the Friendship Hall/meeting room have seen a lot of use over the years and need to be replaced. Operational costs are ongoing. Our offering will go to projects where it can be used best when it is received in February.

NC Disaster Recovery will be ongoing for several years. The money will be administered by UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) We have provided help already - water, heaters, coats, fire extinguishers, shelf safe milk, etc Needs will change as time goes on We will be helping with constructionrepairing homes and replacing homes - for owners who never anticipated flooding in the mountains. This work will continue for several years. I anticipate that we will have the opportunity to send workteams to help with the construction work

Impact Global Health Alliance/ Curamericas is an organization we have worked with for years. We have sent numerous members on medical and construction work teams to Bolivia The organization, headquartered in Raleigh, has expanded to Central America, the Caribbean, and Africa The first Christmas to Remember Project we did with them provided transportation for midwives and pregnant women - motorcycles that could carry them on the steep, narrow mountain roads in remote areas of Bolivia. Those motorcycles are still in use - well cared for - with Haymount logos on them

More recently, we provided solar panels to help provide electricity for the birthing hospitals in Kenya, so that babies wouldn't be born in the dark with only the light of cell phones available. Three solar-powered microgrids at Community Birthing Centers providing sustainable, lifesaving power were installed with the funds we sent for Kenya. Money sent from this offering will fund microgrids for two Casa Maternas (maternal health centers) in remote areas of Guatemala which are deeply impacted by civil war and systemic challenges, especially for indigenous Maya communities These Casa Maternas provide comprehensive health services, including safe births, prenatal and postpartum care, clean water, adolescent health, and women's empowerment, ensuring women and children not only survive but thrive. Casa Maternas also train health workers from around the world, spreading their cost-effective, sustainable, and proven methods to improve community health globally

United Method

The United Methodist Men would like to extend a “Thank You” to all who came out and supported them during their annual Men’s BBQ. Here is a breakdown of how your generous donations and support have been put to work in our church and community. The UMM gave $1,000 to Al Miller and his work with Western North Carolina Disaster Relief. They also gave $500 towards a tractor trailer full of water that went to the impacted area of the state

In addition, The UMM gave out free hot dogs to those in our church and community who attended our annual Trunk or Treat event, and continue to support local Boyscout Troops. Additionally, the UMM paid $2,000 for a new tarp to cover the church’s playground. They also are planning on replacing a broken fridge in the NLC, which will cost around $2800

Thank You From UWFaith

The United Women in Faith want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported us this year Whether it was buying cookies at garage sales, buying desserts at Wednesday Evening Fellowship, partaking in our Cake Raffle, or generously donating socks for our Warm Feet for the Homeless sock drive-we appreciate the support! We look forward to seeing you all in the new year and wish everyone a very Merry Christmas!

Finance Update

From Mandy Middleton

Thank you for your continued support of Haymount's mission to make followers of Christ We do this in so many ways from Sunday School and Services, Wednesday Evening Fellowship, and Missions to name a few. Your support also helps us to continue in our beautification and upkeep of Haymount's structure. We absolutely couldn't support our mission and maintain our church structure without your help in the way of service, prayers and gifts As the end of 2024 approaches and we prepare for Thanksgiving and Christmas, the staff, Finance Committee and Church Council are also preparing We all work together to not only make sure that both this year's budget needs are fulfilled, but we are also preparing next year's budget. If you need to get caught up on this year's pledge or have any questions about where you are year-to-date - feel free to reach out to Nicole, our Director of Finance 910-484-0181 Also if you still want to put in your estimate of giving for next year - you can contact Nicole as well Once again, thank you so very much for your continued support of our mission here at Haymount

Volunteer Opportunity Myrover Reese

Haymount United Methodist Church has a long-standing relationship with Myrover-Reese Recovery Homes, Inc , which is the oldest halfway house in the state of North Carolina. For the past 11 years, HUMC has generously provided the Bibles for Myrover- Reese’s well attended Weekly Bible Study. In additions, HUMC donates unsold items from our garage sales to MRRH’s thrift store This thrift store contributes significantly to MRRH’s budget, and depends heavily on volunteers to keep it up and running

Residents of the Myrover- Reese Recovery Homes can earn community service hours towards fulfilling their residency requirements by volunteering in the thrift store The thrift store is experiencing a shortage of qualified volunteers. HUMC has an experienced team of yard-sale experts and perhaps some of you (or anyone else) might be willing to give some of your time to this endeavor. If interested, please contact Elizabeth Ramos at (910) 286-2540 for more information.

ventured out to Huske Hardware and enjoyed “Beer and Bible” with others from our community As our young adult families began to grow, it became more and more difficult to meet on Sunday evening In 2022, we started our “Young Adult” Sunday School class. This group consists of men and women in their 20s, 30s and 40s. We meet each Sunday from 10:00-10:50 am and have completed studies from Kate Bowler, Bob Goff,

and studied devotions electronically We have learned a lot about our faith and so much about each other Our Sunday School class has not only provided a sense of community but has also played a significant role in shaping who we all are today. How wonderful to have a group and space to share our joys and struggles, as well as provide support and friendship each week!
