Helen Allingham
T H E I N S P I R AT I O N
Allingham Meadow was inspired by Helen Allingham, the Victorian watercolourist and the first woman to be a full member of the Royal Watercolour Society – in particular her painting “Thatched Cottage at West Horsley”. Helen Allingham lived for many years in a hamlet in Surrey and was one of the finest watercolourists of her time. Her cottage paintings became very popular and, in 1886, she was invited to hold a one-woman exhibition by the Fine Art Society. To this day, her cottages are studied by architects to better understand the construction techniques of the past.
