Director’s Note

Welcome to HPA’s Gates Performing Arts Center and our 2025 fall musical, Little Shop of Horrors!
Mahalo nui for joining us to celebrate this wacky, creepy, and surprisingly heartfelt story. At first glance, Little Shop of Horrors seems like pure campy fun. Underneath the humor and the horror, though, lies a story that is deeply human and timely. For my first season here at HPA as a director, my goal was simple: to have fun while challenging our students with rich text, dynamic music and dance, and complex technical elements. This show has offered all that and more, reminding us how art can make us laugh while also asking big questions about ambition, greed, and the cost of desire.
As part of our production, we also want to acknowledge that Little Shop of Horrors includes themes of domestic violence. Please take care of yourselves and those around you while engaging with the story. We are proud to support Mālama Pono Kohala –Relationships Without Violence, with proceeds from our ticket sales and concessions going directly to their work supporting survivors and raising awareness.
This show has been a true collaboration, and I have many people to thank. To our student leaders Neha, Toby, Leon, Will, and Umi, thank you for your leadership and for welcoming me so warmly into the HPA theatre family. To Mario, thank you for being an incredible music director and friend. To Waimea Music, for sharing your expertise and mentoring our tech crew. To Kelly, for your joyful choreography. To Lin at ProArts Playhouse Maui, for your generosity with puppets and props. To Ari, for being there for all our production needs, and to JR and Patrick, for your creative poster design and advertising work. To our housekeeping, security, and maintenance teams, whose quiet efforts make everything possible. To our parent volunteers, especially The Singh Family, for your endless support during this process.
To my husband, thank you for your patience, love, and belief in this work. To my parents, thank you for always cheering me on.
And to my very first HPA cast and crew: you will always hold a special place in my heart. I will never forget you.
With Gratitude, Taylor Morgan
