ALOHA HPA FAMILIES!
Welcome to Hawai’i Preparatory Academy
On behalf of the entire Hawaiʻi Preparatory Academy community, I am delighted to welcome you and your family to the class of students entering in fall 2025. Congratulations!
Whether you are joining us in kindergarten or 12th grade, you are now an important member of a close-knit school family or ʻohana. HPA has a proud legacy that stretches back to 1949, and we’re excited to have you join a community rooted in tradition, purpose, and a shared commitment to excellence.
At HPA, you will form valuable and meaningful connections — with peers and adult mentors — that will last a lifetime. You’ll discover learning opportunities that are truly unique — rooted in the ecology, culture, and communities of our island, and delivered with care and
creativity by our teachers and staff. As you prepare to join the HPA ʻohana, I encourage you to embrace the many events, activities, clubs, athletic teams, and volunteer opportunities that we have to offer. During your journey with us, we expect that you’ll not only take inspiration from HPA, but also give back with your own abilities, ideas, and talents. Our community is something we build together.
As you will quickly learn, the people of HPA are dedicated to your intellectual and personal growth. You will be encouraged by compassionate, friendly teachers and staff members who will know your name and help you navigate the resources, programs, and curricula we offer.
The magic that happens at HPA is made possible through a combination of tuition,
endowments, and gifts to the HPA Fund — our school’s annual fund. Our tradition of giving back to the school that we all love is a point of pride that dates back to HPA’s founding in 1949. I hope that you join us in this spirit of generosity and community.
We look forward to welcoming you to campus in person this fall! Once again, I extend my congratulations on your admission to HPA and welcome you to our ʻohana!
With aloha,
Fred Wawner HPA Head of School
Welcome to the Upper School
PREPARING FOR NEXT YEAR
We are thrilled to welcome you and your ʻohana to our HPA community for the 2025–2026 academic year. An exciting journey lies ahead, and we’re honored to be part of it.
Over the coming months, we’ll be sharing important information to help you prepare for your start at HPA — including key dates, course registration, opening week activities, residential life details, and more. All communication will be sent to your email, and you’ll also be able to find everything in one place on our New Student Information Resource Board in myHPA. We encourage you to check this resource regularly, as we’ll continue updating it with helpful materials throughout the summer. We’re so excited to have you join our school ʻohana! You’ll be hearing more from us soon, but in the meantime, please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions. You can contact us at 808-881-4002 or upperschool@ hpa.edu — we’re here to help.
Core Values
Integrity: living honestly and with moral courage
Respect: serving with kindness and responsibility
Pursuit of excellence: striving for the highest and best result
Wonder: being curious, appreciative, and content
Our core values are part of how we “live aloha.” They help HPA fulfill its mission: to provide exceptional learning opportunities in a diverse community honoring the traditions of Hawai‘i. Through our core values, we make HPA a warm, welcoming, purposeful community where you will grow and be accepted for who you are.
HPA’s core values aren’t tucked away in a book somewhere— these are real ideas that guide us as a school. We regularly examine how these values can be brought to life. We make them a topic of conversation—through weekly assemblies, faculty advisory groups, the Upper School residential life curriculum, and other programs.
DISCOVER THE LEGACY OF KA MAKANI
Honoring Our Past, Embracing Our Future
You are joining HPA at a very exciting time! As we begin the 2025–2026 school year, we invite you to explore the history, purpose, and potential of this special place. Each class commits anew to HPA, bringing their generosity, sense of responsibility, and aloha forward to support and sustain our beloved school for generations to come.
HPA was founded in 1949, when Waimea was a town marked by Parker Ranch and the US Marine Corps. After World War II, as military encampments left the area, Waimea gained a new entertainment center (now Kahilu Theatre), a new airstrip (now Waimea-Kohala Airport), and Bishop Harry Kennedy of Honolulu
Click to learn more about the history of HPA
found the perfect place for a new boarding school on the site where St. James Episcopal Church now stands in town. But long before all of this, Waimea was home to thick forests of ʻiliahi and ʻōhiʻa, and thousands of Native Hawaiians who cultivated the land and waterways with deep intention. King Kamehameha’s strongest company of warriors, the Kīpuʻupuʻu, were named after Waimea’s piercing rains
and trained in the winds known as ka makani.
For generations, HPA students have honored this tradition with the mele and ʻoli of Hole Waimea, and proudly bear ka makani as our mascot. Like this sacred element, our students, too, are strong, influential, ever-changing — both powerful and gentle. Hawaiʻi Preparatory Academy owes its entire identity to both this place and the strong-willed, adventurous, goodhearted people who have made it what it is — yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Congratulations again on joining Ka Makani.
The HPA Upper Campus comprises 220 acres in the foothills of the Kohala Mountains and is home to the Upper School (grades 9 to 12 and postgraduate). The campus opened in 1959, with core buildings designed by renowned mid-century architect Vladimir Ossipoff. Our campus remains the largest single collection of Ossipoff buildings. Facilities include 22 classrooms, a performing arts center, visual arts center, science laboratories, three residence halls, one smaller house-dorm, and the technology-rich Energy Lab.

As part of enrollment, health forms must be completed in order for your child to attend classes and participate in any activities at HPA. These forms are due by August 1, 2025.
Course Selection
Upper School students will soon be able to register for their courses. Look for an email from our HPA Registrar.
Placement Tests
Placement test(s) must be taken by the incoming student under the supervision of a parent or guardian. It is extremely important that the student is not allowed to use any notes or textbooks. In order to ensure that the student is accurately placed, it is crucial that these conditions are honored. The Registrar will reach out to you when it is time for your placement tests.
Assemblies and Advisory
Our weekly assemblies will be a time for our community to come together to celebrate our school and share important information. Our students also meet weekly in a smaller group with their advisors. These meetings are a great opportunity to build relationships with other students in a smaller setting and discuss any questions or concerns with their faculty advisor.
I-20/F-1 Visa
For residential students without an U.S. passport only Form I-20 is an important document that is issued by SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) through the school. It is a required document that students will need in order to schedule a F-1 visa appointment with your local U.S. embassy. The HPA Admission Office will be sending communications regarding the issuance of Form I-20 to international students. New international students on the F-1 visa must arrive in the United States on or before the Program Start Date listed on the Form I-20, and must arrive on the HPA campus on Friday, August 8, 2025.

UPPER SCHOOL • CLASS SCHEDULE
Upper School classes will meet on alternate days, 'Ula or Mamo. 'Ula days consist of A, B, C, and D class blocks. Mamo days consist of E, F, and G class blocks. Each class block is 70 minutes long with a 15-minute passing time. Academic classes will begin at 8:30 am and end at 3:00 pm daily, followed by co-curricular activities and team sports.
Our ‘Ula and Mamo Upper School schedule was named with intention. The lehua ‘Ula and lehua Mamo are two prominent flower varieties of the ‘ōhi‘a tree, the foundation of Hawaii's forests. ‘Ula (red) and Mamo (yellow) are colors representative of high esteem and dignity. The lehua has been chosen as a symbol to represent HPA’s pursuit of excellence and to represent alternating days on our schedule.
Student Life at HPA EVENTS, ACTIVITIES
AND TRADITIONS
Every year, our students have hundreds of opportunities to explore our island home and immerse themselves in everything our school and local communities offer. Fom visiting national parks to stargazing atop Maunakea or ziplining through the Kohala Mountains and enjoying white-sand beaches such as Hāpuna, Kaunaʻoa, and Waialea — it’s all available. Ka Makani also have the opportunity to visit the black-sand beach Honomalino and the green-sand beach Papakōlea and hike through Pololū Valley and other scenic locations.
Since many of our activities happen near or in the water, we encourage our students to be proficient swimmers. During Opening Days, new residential students will be required to complete a basic HPA swim test to ensure their safety in such activities. If you are uncomfortable in the water or unable to swim, please take time this summer to arrange for swimming lessons or opportunities to improve.
Participating in these opportunities is essential to maintaining your personal well-being by balancing academics, athletics, extracurricular activities, and service learning. We encourage all our students to make the most of the many unique choices our program has to offer!
OUTDOOR PROGRAM
One of HPA’s most distinguished programs is our Outdoor Program, which offers students adventures tailored specifically to the Hawaiʻi Island landscape. Whether backpacking to restore ancient fishponds, hiking coastal beaches, or trekking through remote island valleys — our students work together to sustain and learn from one another and the land around them. Outdoor trips are offered throughout the year. Small groups of students have the opportunity to enjoy overnight backpacking, weekly hikes, and day trips. Over the course of the journey, students come together as a team, work hard, and hone their outdoor and leadership skills. Participants welcome the opportunity to unplug, explore the unique beauty of Hawaiʻi Island, and get to know each other in a truly intimate setting.
HPA TRADITIONS
You will soon discover that HPA is full of excellence, community, and fun traditions. Our annual HPA Olympics, which will take place in the spring of 2025, is a beloved highlight of the year. Started by HPA faculty member Zeke Knight in 1979, this annual tradition involves the entire Upper School with Grade 9 - 12 students participating in more than 100 competitive events, culminating in a raucous lip-sync and spectacular talent show.
International Day is another time-honored tradition where we celebrate our extraordinary student diversity. HPA is proud to have residential students from over 20 countries and day students representing many other countries in our school community.
KA MAKANI TRAVEL PROGRAM
For the 2024-25 academic year, students in grades 9-12 will have travel opportunities to New York City, Washington D.C., Peru, France, Switzerland, Italy & Spain, and Japan.. Coordinated by partner organizations and chaperoned by HPA teachers, these trips are curated by world travelers and subject-matter experts who understand that a compelling itinerary should be full of opportunities for experiential learning. Past trip opportunities include Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Japan, England, France, Spain, China, Costa Rica, Cuba, India, Morocco, Peru, Tanzania, Washington D.C., and neighboring Hawaiian islands.
Ka Makani Athletics
PLAY WITH PRIDE, ELEVATE YOUR GAME
At HPA, fostering a culture of physical activity and well-being is paramount. All students are required to participate in an afternoon sport or active pursuit, ensuring a balanced and healthy lifestyle. Our comprehensive intramural program offers an array of options to cater to diverse interests, ranging from traditional sports like lacrosse, rugby, basketball, and tennis to more specialized activities such as horseback riding, yoga, and hiking.
For those students with a competitive edge and a passion for high-level athletics, HPA boasts 22 athletic teams renowned for their expert coaching and rigorous conditioning programs.
As proud members of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation, which comprises 24 member schools, and the Hawaii High School Athletic Association, with a network of 96 member schools statewide, HPA athletes have the opportunity to compete at the highest levels.
Residential students are housed in three residence halls on the HPA campus — Robertson Hall, Carter Hall, and PerryFiske Hall. A team of dorm faculty, managed by a dorm head, are most involved in the day-to-day operations, planning, and programming of our boarding program.
During the school day, you attend class and afternoon cocurriculars with day and boarding students together. After dinner, you check into your dorm for free time, study hall, and sometimes a residential community meeting (depending on the day). On the weekends, you will explore the fantastic recreational and cultural activities of Hawai‘i Island and our region.
In this multicultural community, you will gain a fresh perspective on yourself and your home culture, along with a more international view of your studies and the world in general. You’ll learn to manage your time and personal space; collaborate and communicate with your dorm family; and take responsibility and leadership in dorm life.
Information to Know Before Your Arrivial
PREPARING FOR RESIDENTIAL LIFE
HOUSING AND ROOMING
Our residential students are carefully assigned dorms and roommates in August. Upon enrolling, you were asked to fill out a ‘New Boarding Student Housing Questionnaire’ form in myHPA. If you have not already completed this task, please do so at your earliest convenience. This form will provide our dorm heads with some insight into possible roommate compatibility, and help you have an academically successful and socially enjoyable year. We will advise you of your roommate assignment upon your arrival on campus.
DORM STAFFING
Each dormitory is managed by a team of eight faculty members, led by a faculty dorm head. The dorm head and residential faculty live in the dorm, providing an
adult presence on every floor or wing; the remaining team members live nearby in campus residences. One of the ten is on duty at all times. In addition, older student prefects are carefully chosen in each dorm to help guide their younger dorm-mates. Nurses are available to the boarding community 24/7.
WHAT TO BRING OR PURCHASE ON ARRIVAL
Our new residential students often have questions about what is available here on campus and what they should bring from home. Please review our What To Bring or Purchase on Arrival for a list of helpful suggestions of what to bring or purchase upon arriving. Boxes and packages can be shipped to campus, no earlier than August 1, 2025. All boxes must have the student’s name written clearly and legibly on all packages. All packages

Our team of residential faculty will pick up students anytime throughout the day and evening of Thursday, August 7, and Friday, August 8. When making airline reservations, please be sure that your final destination is Kona Airport (airport code: KOA), on Hawaiʻi Island (Big Island). Direct flights are available from the U.S. mainland. Students flying through Honolulu (airport code: HNL), on the island of Oʻahu, must take a 40-minute interisland flight to Kona.
Travel Details
To help us coordinate arrival logistics and airport transportation, all residential families are now required to complete the Back-to-School Travel Form. This form must be submitted along with your student’s official flight confirmation email or travel itinerary.
Important: Families with more than one residential student must complete a separate form for each child.
In order to account for all students, and to arrange for transportation from the airport to our campus, we ask that all residential students submit their airline’s confirmation email or travel agent itinerary. This email should include your entire travel itinerary. The most important pieces of information are:
• Flight confirmation code
• Airline and flight number
• Date and time of arrival to your final destination, which is the Kona Airport (airport code: KOA), on Hawaiʻi Island
• Please provide a student mobile number and/or a WhatsApp number/id, if available
To ensure that we have the most accurate information please forward the email that you received from the airline. Please do not send an image (screenshot), as we require the email you received from the airline confirming your flights. College Counseling HPA
PREPARING YOU FOR THE NEXT STEPS
HPA’s College Counseling program is based on the philosophy that the college planning process is much more than helping students get into college; it also is about the development of the personal insights and skills necessary to make important life decisions and establish meaningful goals.
We have developed a structured program that regularly works with students in grades 9-12 to help them prepare for college without compromising their ability to enjoy their high school years.
Areas of focus include academic planning, standardized testing, self-reflection, major and career exploration, the college search process, essay writing, teacher recommendations, and, finally, the college application and financial aid process.
HPA is fortunate to host about 60 college representatives each year, who visit our campus to discuss their programs and admissions practices with our students. These college presentations range from public universities (University of Washington, University of Oregon, CU-Boulder), to private universities (Boston University, USC, Lehigh), to liberal arts colleges (Carleton, Amherst, Pomona), and also include the most selective institutions in the nation (Dartmouth, Harvard, Stanford). In addition to these visits, our students are invited to participate in two large college fairs during the school year.
RECENT PLACEMENTS
HPA graduates are consistently admitted to and attend prestigious institutions, such as those below, as well as many other highly-selective colleges and universities. We place great importance on helping students develop a college list that is a effective match for their strengths and future goals. Virtually 100 percent of our graduates enroll at four-year institutions and report high satisfaction with their university choice.

ADVANCEMENT & GIVING
FUELING OUR MISSION
TOGETHER, WE UPHOLD THE PROMISE OF HPA
Our advancement efforts at HPA span a range of opportunities and priorities — and we value the participation of everyone. There are many opportunities to give. They are fun and foundational, and they truly make the difference for our work at HPA with your student(s).
The HPA Fund, an annual tradition, rests at the center of our yearly advancement priorities. The Fund provides essential, unrestricted support for the student experience — from academics and athletics to arts and experiential learning. This year, as every year, our goal is to reach 100% participation from our families. Every dollar makes a difference in helping to bridge the gap between tuition revenue and the full cost of providing the HPA experience.
Last year, this gap in cost of experience for each student was approximately $1,314 and gifts through the HPA Fund bridged this need.
