Tropical Leaves III, Terry Field

OIL ON CANVAS, 2021, 40” X 40”

This stunning oil painting has the grandeur and power of a Georgia O’Keefe artwork. It is a remarkable closeup view of our island ti plants (Cordyline fruticosa). The complementary hues of orange, russet, and green blend beautifully and the vertical leaves create a strong composition. With its modern square format, this contemporary painting is especially dynamic, bringing the bold natural ti leaves close to the picture plane for us to appreciate.

Capturing the yellow leaves in the background is a brilliant choice, as if light is emanating from the center to add vibrancy to the red and green leaves.

Contemporary painter, Terry Field, has created this collectible masterwork that will grace any decor and be cherished for years to come. We are privileged to showcase her painting at Alu Mai, and we are honored to count her as a member of the HPA ‘ohana.

Tang Horse, John Young

OIL ON CANVAS, c. 1980, 16.25” X 20.25”

ITEMS & DESCRIPTIONS

With its dynamic shape, energetic brushwork, and calligraphic lines, Tang Horse refects the compelling simplicity of modern art. Young’s Tang Horse is exceptional for the spectacular red-orange on a blue ground and the rarity of his oil paintings. The horse gallops and whinnies, its mane fowing in the wind; only essential contours and abstract lines portray these remarkable details.

Recognized by the Hawaiʻi State Senate as a “Living Treasure of Hawaiʻi,” John Young applied his knowledge of Chinese calligraphy and art history to paint the spirited horses of the Tang Dynasty (7th-10th century). He was always fascinated by Chinese horse paintings, but there was a sense of power and majesty about Young’s horse paintings that set them apart.

Top of the Pali, Millard Sheets

WATERCOLOR, 1935, 32” X 39”

A renowned American landscape painter, Millard Owen Sheets was also a muralist, architectural designer, and lifelong educator. Born in Pomona, he became a member of the California Watercolor Society as a teenager and exhibited nationally throughout the 1930s. His stylized and surrealist watercolor paintings are in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington D.C., the Huntington Library in California, and the Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, where he was a signifcant fgure.

Top of the Pali is a brilliant painting with the myriad of greens that defne the steep, verdant clifs of the Ko‘olau Mountains on O‘ahu. Sheets used a painterly brushwork that highlights the variety of textures, enlivens the scene, and engages the viewer. It is a powerful site at the top of Nuʻuanu Valley where King Kamehameha I defeated his enemies and gained control of Oʻahu in 1795. Nestled below the clifs is the Kāneʻohe community and Bay, the Kualoa Peninsula, and Mokoliʻi Island in the distance. In this highly collectible artwork, Millard Sheets captured the panoramic beauty and rich coloration of our islands.

Proud Lady, Madge Tennent

INK AND WATERCOLOR ON PAPER, 1945, 11.25” X 17.25”

The subtle “feather drawing” and pose of this woman in her gala holoku is especially elegant. Madge Tennent could paint the majesty and grandeur of Hawaiian women in bold compelling forms and then pivot to delicate, feathery ink paintings. With her beautiful expressive face and dance-like pose in the billowing ball gown, this Proud Lady is a very special Tennent masterpiece. The subtle lines and soft wash refect the confdence in both the subject and the artist; Tennent could paint her vision with such ease. This is a treasure to be cherished.

Madge Tennent’s facility in drawing and painting derived from several opportunities, her formal academic training at Academie Julien in Paris when she was only 13 to 16 years of age and later while on leave in Australia, she studied with Julian Ashton “and learned,” she said, “to draw for the very frst time.” The founder of the Sydney Art School, Ashton was an ardent disciple of Impressionist painting. HPA is honored to steward the Tennent Art Collection and ofer this outstanding artwork by Madge Tennent. She has been hailed as “the most signifcant individual contributor to Hawaiian art in the 20th century” and “without question the greatest interpreter of the Hawaiian fgure.”

This striking koa sculpture captures the spirit of Ka Makani and refects a unique vision in abstract wood carving. Vasconcellos has been an “instinctual” sculptor most of his life. His works draw out the natural curves of the materials he forages from the beach and in the woods. He credits Mau Piailug, the Micronesian navigator who piloted the Hōkūle‘a on her maiden voyage from Hawai‘i to Tahiti, with teaching him how to carve. He was working his county job at Kualoa Park in 1976 when Piailug showed up to put the canoe together. Vasconcellos made himself a devoted acolyte. “As far as I was concerned, it was a total apprenticeship, and as far as he was concerned, I was there helping him,” he says. Piailug taught him to understand his materials, use an adze, and always work with the grain. Vasconcellos’ tools of choice are still chisels and adzes he made himself!

Windward Koʻolau 9/50, Shirley Hasenyager

COLORIZED ETCHING, C. 1970, 9.5” X 9.5”

The painterly texture in this extraordinary art gives depth and realism to this dramatic scene of the Ko‘olau Mountains on Windward O‘ahu. Abundant ferns at the base of the roughhewn clifs create a wonderful contrast. The tondo shape frames the scene so we focus on the serene beauty. The magic of etching was started by Rembrandt with softer lines and more tonal range than was possible with engraving. A profcient printmaker and teacher at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, Hasenyager shared, “I sometimes also make marks directly on the metal. This is called ‘dry point’ as they do not require use of acid. After I am happy with the image, which may mean recoating the plate and putting it back in acid several times. I ink the plate and wipe the surface clean, leaving ink in the lines or other marks in the plate. The image is then printed on dampened rag paper on an etching press.”
