“I feel very strongly about the need to give back. Although there are many worthy causes which I also support, animal welfare is my priority because animals are so vulnerable and aren’t always given the value they deserve. Those of us who have pets know how much joy and unconditional love they give us. For me, it’s not only about cats and dogs, but about all animals. If they suffer, it bothers me.
That’s why Hawaiian Humane Society’s mission statement aligns with my belief, 'to promote the human-animal bond and the humane treatment of all animals.'
I enjoy giving now to Hawaiian Humane Society, while I am around to see all the great work they’re doing for our precious animals and our community, but I also want to ensure that I continue to support their life-saving and life-changing work, even after I’m gone. We know the need will continue, and Hawaiian Humane Society, who has been serving our community since 1883, will continue to meet those needs.”

PLANNED GIVING
ABOUT
The Helen Kīna'u Wilder Legacy Society honors those who have taken the important step to include Hawaiian Humane Society in their Will or Trust. Naming Hawaiian Humane as a beneficiary will support the important work we do for all animals that are welcomed to our campus.
WHO WAS HELEN KĪNA'U WILDER?
In 1883, a group of dedicated citizens formed Hawaiian Humane Society. In 1897, at the age of 26, Helen Kīna'u Wilder was deputized as Hawai'i's first female police officer. Helen often rode on horseback, carried a pair of handcuffs, and had the power to arrest offenders. It was through her dedication and that of many who came after her that Hawaiian Humane Society is the vital animal advocate, rescue, community resource, and educational institution it is today.

ABOUT US
Hawaiian Humane Society is dedicated to promoting the human-animal bond and the humane treatment of all animals. We work towards creating a truly humane society based on compassion and shared responsibility. We envision a community in which every companion animal has a home – a community in which people highly regard and care for their own pets and all animals on O'ahu.
OUR STORY
1883
1897
350 concerned citizens, including King Kalākaua, organized what became Hawaiian Humane Society to advocate on behalf of companion and working animals.
Our first office was a cottage on the 'Iolani Palace grounds. Hawaiian Humane’s mission quickly grew to include prevention of cruelty to children and the care of unwed mothers.
26-year-old Helen Kīna'u Wilder, a member of a prominent Kamaʻāina family, was given the authority to enforce animal cruelty laws as the first female police officer of the Hawaiian Police Force. She and her friends pooled their resources to pay a salary to hire Chang Apana, our first animal crimes investigator. At the time, our welfare efforts were aimed more at working animals than pet cats or dogs. Even then, education was a top priority. In a time when animal information was very basic, it fell to those early members to raise public awareness about the proper care, feeding, and humane treatment of animals. The vision of those early pioneers continues to guide our efforts today.
1942 2019
In 1942, we relocated to our current campus in Mō'ili'ili, and have expanded our facility several times to meet the growing need. In 2016, we added our Veterinary Services Hospital to assist with the medical care needs of our adoptable animals.
Hawaiian Humane Society grew and expanded our services to meet the challenges that came with a growing population. These services covered a range of animal welfare issues: sterilization, lost pets reunion, oversight of pet licensing, enforcement of city animal ordinances, adoptions, fostering, legislative advocacy, a pet food bank, and expanded humane education.
In early 2019, following robust community and staff advocacy calling for dramatic changes to policies and practices, Hawaiian Humane Society's Board of Directors committed to a complete transformation of the organization. We are focused on becoming national leaders in progressive animal sheltering.
Next Steps for Hawaiian Humane Society
The next big phase in our history is underway! 2023 marked a momentous year, with the opening of our second location, the Kosasa Family Campus at Ho'opili, to meet the great need in our West O'ahu communities. At nearly double the size of our Mō'ili'ili campus, our Kosasa Family Campus will dramatically improve our ability to deliver services equitably across our island.
"Your gift can save the lives of thousands of animals every year and helps keep pets and their families together. A planned gift is a lasting legacy of the humananimal bond and will perpetuate the humane treatment of all animals for decades to come."
-Anna Neubauer, CAWA President & CEO
Why Support?
As an independent, local nonprofit that is not affiliated with any organization in the continental United States, we rely on the generosity of donors to be a force for good in the community. Every donation made to Hawaiian Humane Society goes directly to helping O'ahu's animals in need.
It takes more than $40,000 a day to run Hawaiian Humane's programs and services, which make a difference in the lives of local people and animals through animal care, rescue, law enforcement, education, and advocacy.
When you make a gift to Hawaiian Humane Society in your Will or Trust, you become a member of the Helen Kīna'u Wilder Legacy Society. You will join with many other donors and supporters who believe in our mission to promote the human-animal bond and the humane treatment of all animals.
A gift in your Will or Trust doesn’t have to be large to make a difference. Just a small percentage of what is left after you have provided for your loved ones can create a brighter future for the animals in our care and the people who love them.
Together we can promote the human-animal bond and humane treatment of all animals.
Your Will and Trust is about your beliefs and values as much as it is about your assets.
After providing for your loved ones, your Will and Trust are the ultimate opportunity to make a lasting difference in the world, where it matters most to you.
A gift in your Will or Trust to Hawaiian Humane Society will change the lives of animals here on O'ahu.
A GIFT IN YOUR WILL ChangesLives Your Legacy is Their Future
"My legacy as a donor is not about remembering my name. My legacy is knowing how my love, compassion, and dedication to animals will continue through the sustainment of Hawaiian Humane's mission. Supporting those who strive to promote the human-animal bond, the humane treatment of all animals, and the positive impact it has on our community, is a priceless legacy."
-H. "Josie" Josypenko, Helen Kīna'u Wilder Legacy Society Member
"Hawaiian Humane Society does a lot for our community. Planned Giving is a great way to help sustain these important causes and give animals a voice. Our pets provide companionship, purpose, and love--it's crucial that we all have a plan to provide for them after we are gone."
-Robert Bean, Director Emeritus
