Hawaiian Humane Society FY2024 Annual Report

Page 1

July 1, 2023 - June 30, 2024

The Hawaiian Humane Society marked its 140th anniversary in fiscal year 2024 with an enormous expansion in access to services for our community. The first full year of operation at our Kosasa Family Campus at Ho‘opili highlighted the pent-up demand for assistance among people and animals in Central and West O‘ahu.

We saw a 9.6% increase in animal admissions, and with more animals staying longer to get the extra care they needed to get ready for adoption. We were operating at or beyond our shelter capacity on both campuses for the entire year.

This past year, our foster volunteers also stepped up in a big way to help with a nearly 80% jump in the number of puppies in need of foster care. The total number of dogs fostered was up more than 50%.

We saw an 11% increase in the number of animals who needed spay/neuter surgery prior to adoption. The number of health exams provided by our Veterinary Services team rose more than 32% and vaccinations were up more than 16% to protect our animals’ health in the crowded shelter environment.

While it was a busy and stressful year for our staff, we were buoyed by the support of all of you who stepped up to help.

We saw an incredible 62% increase in the number of volunteers who worked side by side with us to support our animals and our mission.

The Central and West Oahu communities welcomed our new campus and embraced adoption, contributing to an 8.5% jump in adoptions across our campuses and offsite locations.

The expansion of our education programs to the Kosasa Family Campus boosted participation by nearly 22%.

Your generosity allowed us to build and open a brand-new shelter just in time. That both of our campuses are operating beyond their ideal capacity reflects the enormous need in our community. We will continue to roll out additional services at the Kosasa Family Campus as we have the staffing and financial support to expand access to care.

We could not do this incredible work without the unwavering support of steadfast donors, like you. The contributions you make are an essential component in keeping our commitment to the humane treatment of all animals and the human-animal bond. We hope our work will inspire you to spread the word about animal welfare on O’ahu and to be as generous as possible, helping us find homes and alleviate the suffering of our amazing animals.

Mahalo for your generosity and compassion.

Mahalo for Your Service!

The Hawaiian Humane Society would like to extend our deepest thanks to the dedicated board members who completed their service in FY24. Their commitment, compassion and generosity have advanced our mission and uplifted the people and animals in our community.

Steve Metter joined the board in 2005 and served for 19 years. Steve is a proud dog dad and continues to support Hawaiian Humane’s efforts to find homes for our animals by connecting us with his amazing team at MW Group. Steve’s financial, public policy and entrepreneurial expertise have elevated our organization.

Mi Kosasa joined the board in 2012 and served for 12 years. Mi loves dogs and her Hawaiian Humane alum, Mr. Bubbles, was the star of this year’s Tuxes and Tails. Mi’s passion for fundraising was vital to the success of the capital campaign for the Kosasa Family Campus at Ho‘opili and she has driven fundraising for shelter operations as well.

Susan Kosasa joined the board in 2013 and served for 11 years. She loves birds and is a strong advocate for our feathered friends. Susan’s capital campaign leadership was integral to the construction of the Kosasa Family Campus and her participation on our governance committee has helped to strengthen our organization.

Mike Regan joined the board in 2021 and served for 3 years. Mike loves dogs and horses and was a regular at our annual PetWalk event, bringing in his employer, Servco Pacific, as an event sponsor. Mike’s expertise strengthened our financial position and contributed to the success of our Kosasa Family Campus capital campaign.

Dr. Whitney Limm, M.D. FACS joined the board in 2021 and served for 3 years. A dog advocate and supporter of Tuxes and Tails, Dr. Limm also supported Hawaiian Humane’s daily work by serving as an advisor on shelter and clinic operations.

Admissions, Animal Care & Behavior

Hawaiian Humane continues to be O‘ahu’s largest animal welfare organization, dedicated to helping local pets and people in need. In FY24, our Admissions, Animal Care and Behavior teams faced unprecedented challenges and demonstrated remarkable resilience in providing compassionate care to an increasing number of animals while offering support to community members.

This year, we saw a 9.59% increase in overall animal intake, welcoming 13,726 animals into our shelter. The most notable increases were in cat and dog admissions, rising by 17.01% and 9.96% respectively. These figures underscore the ongoing challenges faced by pet owners, including the persistent lack of affordable pet-friendly housing, high cost of living, and challenges associated with off-island moves.

To address the growing demand and maintain our high standards of care, our Admissions team used shelter diversion tools to keep pets out of the shelter, including rehoming resources like Home to Home, which connects families directly with potential adopters to rehome their pets. While we saw decreases in small animal (-18.81%) and

wildlife (-55.52%) intakes, these changes reflect our evolving role in the community and our efforts to direct our expertise in pet animal care where it’s most needed.

Throughout the year, as animals in need remained in our care for longer periods of time, our Animal Care and growing Behavior teams collaborated on compassionate in-shelter enrichment tools and activities to help set up pets for success, not just while with us, but in their future homes. We look forward to sharing more about these methods in the coming year.

New & Expanded Programs

In FY24, Hawaiian Humane continued to innovate and expand our shelter diversion programs, addressing the persistent challenges of capacity and care for animals in need. Our efforts have not only alleviated pressure on our physical space and Animal Care teams but have also created more opportunities for community involvement in animal welfare.

The Couch Crashers program, launched in October 2022, saw remarkable growth in its first full year of operation. With a 57.96% increase, we placed 714 dogs in short-term foster homes in FY24. This innovative program continues to reduce stress levels for dogs, provide valuable insights into their individual needs, and make pet fostering and adoption more accessible to a wider range of families.

Building on this success, we introduced a new program in November 2023 called Lap Crashers, designed specifically for short-term fostering of shelter cats. In just its first few months, Lap Crashers facilitated 277 cat placements, demonstrating the community’s enthusiasm for feline fostering opportunities.

Our Kitten Kit program also continued to make a significant impact. While we distributed slightly fewer kits this year (95 compared to last year’s 105), we still supported approximately 200 kittens through this initiative. The program remains an essential resource for community members caring for abandoned newborn kittens, providing them with necessary supplies and training to nurture these vulnerable animals.

These expanded and new programs reflect Hawaiian Humane’s commitment to adaptive, community-centered approaches to animal welfare. By empowering more individuals to participate in fostering and kitten care, we’re not only addressing immediate capacity challenges but also fostering a culture of compassion and responsibility toward animals across O‘ahu.

Field Services

While Hawaiian Humane’s Field Services team includes officers deputized to enforce animal laws, it takes an education-first approach to animal welfare issues. Whenever possible, the goal is to ensure animal needs are met while keeping families together. The team also collaborates with the Honolulu Police Department, other government agencies and social service nonprofits to assist vulnerable animals and pet owners. Field Services also contributes its expertise to animal disaster preparation and response, participating in training opportunities in FY24 that were designed to better position our community to prepare for and respond to such events.

Lost & Found

54.1%

Hawaiian Humane serves as O‘ahu’s official pet lost and found, and our Admissions and Field Services teams strive to provide a safe, secure environment for lost pets brought into our care, while working to reunite families with their pets. In FY24, we redoubled our efforts to reunite animals with their families without having to come into our crowded shelters. Our Dispatch team took the lead in our new Hele on Home program, using our lost and found page and social media to reunite pets found in the community with help from other teams across both campuses. We set a benchmark this year for these reunifications, which ultimately resulted in fewer animals entering the shelter, and we hope to see this number grow. As most animals are found close to home, good Samaritans also play a vital role and can get pets home quickly without adding the stress of transportation to the noisy and unfamiliar shelter environment.

Community Outreach

FY24 was a time of remarkable growth for the Community Outreach team, which turned its first full year at the Kosasa Family Campus into an opportunity to deepen ties to the Central and West O‘ahu communities, and increase the impact of its Pet Food Bank, Pet Visitation and off-site wellness clinic programs. The Community Outreach program is aimed at preventing owner surrender, as well as animal neglect and overpopulation, by offering resources to keep pets and their people together. The team offers a free Pet Food Bank at the Mō‘ili‘ili and Kosasa Family campuses; wellness and microchipping clinics island-wide; and access to low-fee and no-fee spay/neuter services. Our Pet Visitation program seeks to enrich lives by sharing the humananimal bond through Joy Ambassador pet-people volunteer teams who visit schools, hospitals, senior health care facilities and more. New relationships with Veterans Affairs facilities were a highlight of FY24 and drew support for the program from the generous members of Hawaii Elks Lodge 616.

Foster Care

Our Foster Care program has experienced remarkable growth, serving as a critical lifeline for vulnerable animals in our community. In FY24, we saw a significant expansion in our fostering capabilities, with a remarkable 23.98% increase in total pets supported by temporary, loving homes.

The most compelling story of our Foster Care program lies in its dynamic growth across different animal categories. While newborn kitten fostering saw a slight decline, we witnessed an extraordinary surge in newborn puppy fostering, with a remarkable 79.31% increase. Our dog fostering numbers also soared, jumping by an impressive 51.05%, demonstrating the growing commitment of our dedicated foster families.

These foster families are true heroes, providing critical care and support to animals at their most vulnerable. Their compassion transforms lives, offering individualized attention that prepares these pets for adoption.

Volunteers

At the heart of Hawaiian Humane beats the unwavering spirit of our dedicated volunteers. This year marked a transformative period for our Volunteer Services program, expanding across our Mō‘ili‘ili and Kosasa Family campuses with an impressive array of meaningful roles. From dog walking and cat enrichment to critical support in our shelter clinic and Pet Food Bank, laundry, and animal care assistants, our volunteers are an

essential lifeline that powers our mission. Their remarkable commitment translated into a stunning 62.12% increase in volunteer participation, with a record-breaking 1,772 compassionate individuals joining our team to make a tangible difference in the lives of animals. These volunteers are more than helpers – they embody the profound connection between community care and animal welfare.

Adoptions

Hawaiian Humane celebrated a remarkable year of connecting animals with loving homes, achieving significant growth across our adoption programs. With the strategic expansion to our Kosasa Family Campus, we’ve increased adoption accessibility, resulting in a total of 7,843 animals finding families of their own – an impressive 8.52% increase from the previous year.

Each adoption represents more than a happy statistic; it’s a comprehensive commitment to animal welfare, with every pet receiving supportive care that extends far beyond the moment of adoption. Our approach ensures each animal is fully prepared for their new life: spayed or neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, and supported by our Post-Adoption Care and Treatment (PACT) program.

By partnering with local private veterinary clinics islandwide to offer complimentary first exams, investing in intensive medical treatment for complex conditions, and providing enrichment activities that prepare animals for successful transitions, we’re not just facilitating adoptions – we’re creating lasting, supportive relationships between pets and their new families.

Education

Our Education program continued to grow in FY24 adding summer camps for the first time. The pilot Keiki Critter Summer Camp served 21 students from elementary to middle school. The program was so well received that we plan to expand in the coming year. Our Education team is at the forefront of fostering the next generation of animal welfare champions, as well as educating adults about our mission and the importance of issues like responsible pet ownership, Free-Roaming cat management and spay/neuter. The team offers curricula for teachers, provides mentorship for age-specific service learning projects, and onboards and stewards Hawaiian Humane’s exclusive Teens4Animals Council, all with the aim of cultivating a more pet-friendly, compassionate community.

Shelter Veterinary Services

The capacity crisis at Hawaiian Humane posed a particular challenge to the shelter Veterinary Services team, which is dedicated to protecting the health of all of the animals in our care. These dedicated professionals provide high-quality, high-volume medical care to thousands of animals in need every year. The increase in vaccinations and health exams in FY24 reflects the high shelter populations as well as that commitment to protecting herd health. We also continued to provide dental care and perform non-routine surgeries for animals in need.

Spay/Neuter

Spaying and neutering is a fundamental strategy to curb pet overpopulation and offers a host of health and behavioral benefits to animals, which is why Hawaiian Humane offers affordable – and sometimes fully-subsidized – spay/neuter services to the community. We also spay/neuter all dogs, cats and rabbits before they are available for adoption. This year we saw a significant increase – 11.08% – in the number of animals who required spay/neuter surgery prior to adoption. We also support the Trap-Neuter-ReturnManage (TNRM) strategy and offer no-fee surgeries to community cat caregivers who dedicate their resources to this effective and humane way to reduce the Free-Roaming cat population over time.

Hawaiian Humane has long advocated for pet microchip identification as a safe, effective and low-cost way to ensure lost pets find their way home. Since 2020, microchipping has also been required by law for cats and dogs. Unlike an ID tag, a microchip is permanent. Only the owner information registered to it has to be updated if you move, change your phone or email address, or rehome your pet. We implant thousands of microchips at our campuses every year and our Pet Kōkua by Hawaiian Humane outreach program microchips owned animals in the community.

Celebrating the First Anniversary of the Kosasa Family Campus at Ho‘opili

May 2024 marked an incredible milestone, the one-year anniversary of the Kosasa Family Campus at Ho‘opili in ‘Ewa Beach, the single largest expansion in Hawaiian Humane’s history. This second location has made pet adoption and support services for animals in need more accessible than ever, allowing us to help thousands more animals in need and serve the Central and West O‘ahu communities more effectively.

The Kosasa Family Campus opened to the public on May 20, 2023, offering adoption and Pet Food Bank services to the community under a phased launch of programs. FY24 has been marked by several milestones at the campus, including:

• July 2023: Soft launch of the Ginny Tiu Pet Kōkua Center, offering limited animal admissions and lost and found services to the community

• August 2023: Expansion of the Couch Crashers program to the Kosasa Family Campus

• November 2023: Launch of the Lap Crashers program and volunteer dog walker program

• January 2024: Full opening of the Ginny Tiu Pet Kōkua Center, offering animal admissions, lost and found services, pet microchipping, and more

• March 2024: Expansion of the foster care program to the Kosasa Family Campus

• June 2024: Expansion of the Petco Love Adoptions Center to daily operations and the launch of the Keiki Critters Summer Camp

As services continued to roll out, the impact of the Kosasa Family Campus has been staggering:

•In FY24, more than 2,286 shelter pets at the Kosasa Family Campus found loving homes, including 1,340 dogs, 843 cats, 43 guinea pigs, 37 rabbits, 11 birds, 10 tortoises and 2 turtles.

• Since the opening of the Ginny Tiu Pet Kōkua Center, Hawaiian Humane’s Admissions and Animal Care teams at the Kosasa Family Campus offered compassionate care to the more than 4,132 animals who were brought into the shelter in need of care.

•Furthermore, the campus successfully reunited more than 310 lost pets with their owners, including 273 dogs, 33 cats, 2 rabbits, 1 bird and 1 tortoise

•Total number of people served by Pet Food Bank at the Kosasa Family Campus at Ho‘opili: 976

•Total number of pets served by Pet Food Bank at the Kosasa Family Campus at Ho‘opili: 1,083

•Total pounds of pet food distributed by Pet Food Bank at the Kosasa Family Campus at Ho‘opili: 19,261

Financial Report

FY24 marked the first full year of operations for the new Kosasa Family Campus at Ho‘opili. Its opening has enabled growth in the number of animals Hawaiian Humane cares for, as well as the number of people served by our education and outreach programs.

As we transitioned from the successful $30 million capital campaign to build the new campus to increased operational fundraising, Hawaiian Humane’s board understood that operating deficits initially would be required to support our investment in addressing the unmet needs of the island. It is committed to moving back toward financial sustainability so that Hawaiian Humane can continue to serve O‘ahu’s animals and pet owners for many years to come. The board expects to reduce operating deficits as expediently as possible by growing public sector, private sector and fee-for-service revenue.

We offset the $3,830,508 operating deficit reflected below using $1.18 million in investment income and nearly $800,000 in bequests, with the remaining amount covered by prior year surpluses. While these resources allowed us to sustain expanded operations, expending them depleted financial reserves intended to perpetuate our mission for years to come.

Our financial position reflects the commitment of Hawaiian Humane’s board and staff to running an efficient operation, with fully 80 percent of our expenses dedicated to the services we provide to the community. We are well under the recommended 35 percent overhead ceiling for nonprofits and even the 25 percent benchmark for highly efficient organizations.

A NEW CHAPTER IN CARING

Every dollar saved is another chance to save a life. That’s why we’re excited to announce our transition to digital publications - a move that allows us to redirect more resources to where they matter most: the animals who need us.

By going digital, we can share more heartwarming adoption stories, provide timely updates about our lifesaving work, and keep you connected to our mission in real-time - all while reducing our environmental paw print.

Ready to stay connected?

Visit HawaiianHumane.org/digital to ensure you never miss a tail-wagging success story or an opportunity to make a difference in an animal’s life.
