A MESSAGE FROM ANNA As we reflect on the past year and anticipate the year ahead, we are deeply grateful for the ways in which this community comes together to support our mission.

The spirit of laulima permeates the work of the Hawaiian Humane Society.

It takes many hands working together to provide second chances to the animals who come into our care. Some of those hands belong to our staff, but so many more belong to our volunteers, our adoptive families, our donors; in other words, to you.

This year we will be opening additional services at our Kosasa Family Campus at Ho‘opili, requiring more hands. We welcome you to explore our volunteer roles, become a foster family for animals in need of temporary care, Couch Crash a dog or Lap Crash a cat to give them a break from the shelter or come and work for us! The virtual training and intensive, in-person sessions brought together animal welfare organizations, the veterinary community and government agencies to prepare for animal disaster response, which has been top of mind following the devastating Maui fires.

The Crucial Role of Our Off-Site Adoption Partners in Finding Homes for Pets In Ōlelo Hawai‘i, laulima means “many hands working together,” a concept centered on joint action and cooperation toward a common goal. The Hawaiian Humane Society’s off-site adoption program embodies this - bringing pets and communities together to promote the human-animal bond and make adoption more accessible.

Hawaiian Humane proudly works with Hawai‘i Cat Cafe, Pounce Hawai‘i and participating PETCOs islandwide, which host cat adoptions at their locations daily; as well as a variety of organizations that host pop-up pet adoption events, including Aloha Home Market, Ali‘i Animal Hospital and American Floor & Home.

“The shelter is not the ideal place for most animals to thrive long-term, though it is a valuable resource for the animals that need us most, “ said Off-Site Adoptions Coordinator Taylor Calma, who took the helm of this program in June 2023. “Our offsite adoption partners allow us to find alternative temporary housing for pets who would have otherwise been waiting longer in the shelter, while also ensuring people don’t have to rely on coming to us at one of our locations. Instead, they have options in their own

neighborhoods. This also frees up space within our shelter locations, which have been overcapacity.”

Taylor takes a strategic approach to identifying which animals to take to specific off-site adoption partners, since each one offers a unique environment for animals. All of our permanent partners offer cat adoptions, while dogs and cats can be found at our pop up events.

Part of Taylor’s daily workflow includes scouring memos in Hawaiian Humane’s shelter management software and interacting with each cat prior to selection. Hawai‘i Cat Cafe in Kapahulu and Pounce Hawai‘i in Kaka‘ako offer cozy, comfortable communal living for social cats and kittens. Members of the public are invited to purchase cat lounge reservations, enjoy handcrafted beverages and an hour of playtime with cats looking for homes. That time interacting with the cats provides comfort and joy to humans, as well as enrichment and socialization for the cats. Participating PETCOs offer individual cat condos for cats who would prefer to interact with people on a one-on-one basis.

Taylor works closely with the Veterinary Services team to ensure each cat’s medical needs are met prior to selection, including checking that they are current on all preventatives and vaccinations, spay/neuter recovery is going smoothly, double-checking microchip numbers, and crafting written profiles for each one based on their personalities to introduce them to the world on HawaiianHumane.org. Part of her role when working with off-site adoption partners is education - being a cat mom eight times over is an advantage.

Taylor often shares her expertise on the social and behavioral attributes of cats, including the benefits of adopting them in pairs with both patrons and partners.

When asked how she would like to grow the off-site adoptions program, Taylor said, “I would love to expand our pop-up off-site adoption events in highneed areas to make adoption more accessible to all.”

Taylor has focused on communities that are not within easy proximity to Hawaiian Humane’s two locations in Honolulu and ‘Ewa Beach, including Windward and East O‘ahu. It was at Aloha Home Market in Kailua that Taylor had her most memorable adoption “happy tail.”

Emmet is one of 1,448 pets who found loving homes in 2023 because of these incredible partnerships.

When asked what’s next for the off-site adoptions program, Taylor said, “Role development and volunteer recruitment are high priorities. I’m expanding an existing volunteer role, the off-site transfer volunteer, to assist with dropping off pets to off-site locations.

I’m also creating a new administrative volunteer role to support our work in assisting with selections and writing profile bios. I can’t wait to start recruiting!”

Emmet “Emmet was a little terrier mix who had been found tied to a fence with his two sisters. He was painfully shy compared to his sisters, so he was brought into our office foster program, where we slowly started gaining his trust and he began to come out of his shell. I took him to two pop-up, off-site adoption events, one at PetWalk in October 2023 and Aloha Home Market in November 2023. At PetWalk, I paired him with a staff member, who helped him to realize that the world isn’t so scary with a trusted friend. At Aloha Home Market, I met a family who came to meet another dog who turned out not to be the right fit. But then, they met Emmet.”

Melissa Meyer remembers that day well. “My son had been asking for a dog for years. We didn’t know if it would be possible since he is sensitive to loud noises, including barking. So we didn’t expect to adopt a dog when we went to Aloha Home Market in November,” Melissa said.

“When we met Emmet, one of the volunteers said, ‘We’ll have to see how he does around your son because noises scare him.’ Knowing they would bond over this, it seemed like it could be the perfect match. After walking around the market, we left to eat lunch, but returned to see if Emmet was still there. When I got there, Taylor was about to put Emmet back in the van. He was one of only two dogs who hadn’t been adopted that day.

She was elated that I came back. My son was so happy to see me holding Emmet that he joyfully jumped up and down. Since then, Emmet has been settling in comfortably in our home and has made friends with

IN OUR BACKYARD

HAPPY TAILS Lost, Found, and Loved: Zoey's Tale of Community Kindness Zoey and her owner Carole Koike’s reunification shows the power of community coming together.

Zoey, a senior chihuahua with impaired hearing, slipped through a small opening in a door during a visit to a friend’s workplace. In this unfamiliar environment, a frightened Zoey embarked on a

journey block after block.

Carole and her husband, Steve, distressed and afraid for their beloved dog, tirelessly searched for Zoey. They checked in at businesses and reached out to nearby cat caregivers, all to no avail. At the same time, Josh and Ashley, tourists staying in Waikīkī, were returning from a luau when they spotted a small senior chihuahua.

It was Zoey, now almost a mile away from where she started. Zoey reminded the couple of their own dog who had passed away a few months earlier.

Josh knew they needed to do their part to help get this sweet, scared girl home.

away! Josh immediately contacted the Honolulu Police Department, which enlisted the help of Harbor Police. They scanned Zoey for a microchip and brought her to the Hawaiian Humane Society. Despite the unexpected workout, Zoey had captured the couple’s hearts. Josh expressed their intention to adopt Zoey and give her a loving home back in New Jersey if she remained unclaimed.

As soon as Carole learned Zoey was missing, she filed a lost pet report with Hawaiian Humane. Field Service Officer Eddie Louis saw her report come in and was able to

match her description with the small, frightened, senior chihuahua who had been brought in as a stray. After a long and stressful night, Carole and Zoey were joyfully reunited.

Carole asked to thank Josh and Ashley personally and, with Josh’s permission, Hawaiian Humane connected Carole with Zoey’s rescuers. Over a mahalo lunch a friendship was born. Now they keep in touch, and find time to hang out whenever Josh is in town!

Zoey’s story is about old friends reuniting, and new friends getting connected. When individuals go above and beyond and come together to do something good (like get a frightened, senior chihuahua back home), that fosters a stronger community.

Breaking Mews: Lap Crashers Foster Program Launches for Cats in Need Following on the success of our Couch Crashers foster program for dogs, we launched a similar short-term foster program for cats called Lap Crashers in November 2023. Hawaiian Humane has seen an unprecedented number of cats

and kittens coming into the shelter.

Lap Crasher fosters play an integral role in expanding our capacity for care, while also providing cats with a break from the shelter and offering the enrichment of safe socialization.

Because studies have shown that cats take longer than dogs to acclimate to new environments, Lap Crasher fosters are asked to keep their cat for at least one week and up to two weeks.

This time in a loving home - even temporarily - provides cats with individualized care from a family in a safe, secure home, which has a transformative impact on shelter animals. It allows them time to decompress, learn that

the world is not such a scary place and gives their personalities the chance to truly shine.

Hawaiian Humane provides all of the basic supplies and veterinary care needed for each cat during their foster stint, and asks that each Lap Crasher foster family complete a virtual report card so that we can learn more about the best family and household match for each cat. Prospective adopters also see value in the Lap Crashers program because it serves as a trial adoption to see if a cat is the right fit for their lifestyle.

Participating in Lap Crashers is simple: just visit either our Mō‘ili‘ili or Kosasa Family Campus at Ho‘opili and speak to an adoptions representative to get the process started!

Pawsitively Irresistible: Unveiling the Power of Adoption Specials With shelter populations at a persistent high, adoption specials are a valuable tool to promote pet adoption, allow us to spotlight long-stay pets, and reduce barriers to pet ownership. This, in turn, creates more space in overcrowded shelters for vulnerable pets who need us most.

Contrary to common misconceptions, research by the ASPCA and published in the Journal of Applied Welfare Science indicates that the cost of adoption is not a

factor when it comes to responsible pet ownership and a family’s ability to afford a pet long-term. In fact, there is no statistical difference in pet retention or the ability to cover necessary veterinary care for adopted pets between paid fee or fee-waived adoptions.

Hawaiian Humane adopters are getting a good deal regardless of the fees paid, as the average cost to provide the level of care and services afforded of each adoptable animal in our care is approximately $560.

Bottom line: adding a family member by adopting with Hawaiian Humane is priceless.

From Advocacy to Action: Championing Change in Support of Laws for Paws With the opening of the 2024 legislative session, we’d like to invite you to join our efforts to strengthen Hawai‘i’s animal laws.

The Hawaiian Humane Society has a proud history of public policy advocacy on behalf of the people and animals in our community.

This year we will be working on a range of issues including access to housing for pet owners, banning backyard surgeries, and requiring accountability from businesses that sell animals for profit.

Working Together with American Humane on Animal Emergency Response An emergency tends to focus the mind. The hard work of preparing for an emergency, however, easily falls off the priority list.

The Hawaiian Humane Society recently invested considerable time into that hard work thanks to a grant secured by the City & County of Honolulu Department of Emergency Management.

The city contracted with American Humane, a national leader in animal rescue and disaster response, to offer a series of trainings, in-person and virtual, over the course of five months. The process culminated at the end of November in an intensive threeday training at the Kosasa Family Campus at Ho‘opili.

Representatives from city, state and federal agencies participated alongside our staff and personnel from Maui Humane Society,

Kaua‘i Humane Society, the local veterinary community, and other animal welfare nonprofits.

It was powerful to benefit from the expertise of national first responders, as well as the experience of our friends on Maui.

Some key takeaways were that there are resources available to

help, but we need to act well in advance of a disaster to build those relationships, develop local expertise and practice what we’ve learned.

Disaster response is not the kuleana of any one agency.

Preparing and responding to emergencies in ways that minimize harm will require each of us to take personal responsibility for ourselves and the humans and animals we hold dear.

The recent trainings and the steps we plan to take toward implementing what we have learned will support Hawaiian Humane’s commitment to protecting the hundreds of animals we have in our care daily; and to doing all that we can to be a resource for animals and pet owners in our community.

Bretman Rock's Heartwarming Rescue: From Lost to Loved, Kainalu Finds a Home When a stray dog wandered into his backyard, local social media influencer and content creator, Bretman Rock (@BretmanRock) quickly stepped into action, proving why he’s known as “Da Baddest.” After ensuring the dog had food and water, Bretman took the dog to a private veterinary clinic to be scanned for a microchip, in the hopes of reuniting him with his family.

Unfortunately, the dog didn’t have a microchip.

Bretman decided to take him to our Kosasa Family Campus at Ho‘opili to figure out next steps.

The dog, whom Bretman had been referring to as Kainalu, was medically evaluated and waited for the mandatory two-day hold period in hopes of his owner finding him. When that date came and went, Kainalu was neutered and was ready for a chance at finding a loving home.

Thankfully, Bretman returned to our Kosasa Family Campus to take Kainalu home — through our Couch Crashers foster program! While fostering Kainalu, Bretman reached out to his extensive social media following (more than 18 million on Instagram and 16 million on TikTok!) and found a loving home for Kainalu, with support from our Kosasa Family Campus adoptions team.

Hele on Home Challenge: Big Wins for Reuniting Lost Pets in the Field From July through December 2023, Hawaiian Humane’s dedicated Field Services team competed in a nationwide challenge hosted by Best Friends Animal Society, encouraging competing shelters to reunite lost pets in the field. Strong return-to-home programs like the coordinated efforts of our Field Services officers, humane investigators and shelter staff ensure pets are returned to their owners before ever entering the shelter. This effort required collaboration between departments and with community partners, equipping our officers with innovative technology, and leveraging the power of social media.

reunited 179 pets in the field during that same period last year, which amounts to a 103% increase!

Kudos to the Field Services and Dispatch teams for leading this effort, and support staff from Veterinary Services, Community Engagement, Off-Site Adoptions and Adoptions at the Kosasa Family Campus at Ho‘opili for contributing to this incredible feat!

The Hele on Home funding allowed our Field Services officers to print found pet posters in the field. They also worked closely with Dispatch and shelter staff to match found pets with lost pet reports; listings on the Petco Love Lost database; and social media posts on Facebook groups like Paw Posse ‘Ohana or Lost and Found Pets, O‘ahu.

These efforts led to Hawaiian Humane reuniting a total of 399 beloved pets with their families in the field - the most success of all the agencies participating in Best Friends Animal Society’s challenge. Hawaiian Humane

Indi and Doja Shine in the Spotlight This month’s cover models, Hawaiian Humane alumni Indi and Doja, were featured on OC16’s The Pet Hui, Hawai‘i’s only local pet-centered TV series, on October 22, 2023. The cats were adopted by Hawaiian Humane’s Outreach Coordinator, Skylar “Sky” Geasey and her partner, Amanda. Sky and Amanda promoted responsible cat ownership by sharing with Pet Hui viewers how they socialize, train and provide enrichment to Indi and Doja. They also regularly take Indi and Doja on exciting outdoor adventures, including hikes and trips to the beach (they love to swim!).

Pet Kokua in the Community Our Pet Kōkua Outreach team has had a busy fall/winter schedule, with several Pet Visitation visits, virtual Pet Loss Support Group sessions hosted by Rosemarie Grigg, free pet wellness and spay/neuter clinics, community events and more. While their accomplishments are many, the highlights include:

Supporter Spotlight Verna Oda Yamamoto Verna Oda Yamamoto believed that the universe provides and that belief fueled a generous spirit.

Her husband, Cy Yamamoto, described the three years that they were married before her untimely passing in 2016 as the best times of their lives. When considering how to honor her legacy, his thoughts turned to animals.

Verna had been a longtime supporter of the Hawaiian Humane Society. Her beloved companion when she met Cy was a white miniature poodle named Joey whose picture on Hawaiian Humane’s website stole her heart.

“Verna was so relieved that I was there to care for Joey, I think even more than being there for her,” said Cy. “She had provisions in her will specifically for him in case she died.”

University of Hawaii. Her public service included a career as an executive officer at the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs. She faced adversity in life, including the sudden death of her first husband, Sanford Oda, in 2006.

Verna's travels took her all over the globe and her commitment to health and wellness was evident in her love for hearty salads and her dedicated exercise routine.

Norine Wong, one of her many close friends, attested to her brilliance, generosity and playful spirit. She said that Verna's humor and grace endeared her to those around her. “Everyone loved her,” she said.

Cy said butterfly flew over his car as he dropped Norine off at her workplace on the day they spoke to Hawaiian Humane for this story.

Animals like Fearless, a 1-yearold basenji mix who was brought in to Hawaiian Humane after her owner could no longer provide for her care. Contrary to her name, Fearless was in fact quite fearful - she would pancake herself on the floor of her kennel, terrified of her new surroundings and those who tried to interact with her. With her tail tucked, trembling, rigid body posture, and lowered head, Fearless would avert her eyes and seek to hide whenever anyone approached her.

It was clear to our Operations team that Fearless would need extra time and a quiet space to decompress. She was selected to be a part of our office foster program, allowing her to gain some socialization with staff while still having the opportunity to meet prospective adopters when she was ready. There, she gradually began to warm up and let her personality unfurl.

Each day brought an opportunity for Fearless to embody her name, as she slowly gained her confidence and showed herself to be affectionate, goofy and loyal to those she bonded with. Just 23 days after she came into our care, Fearless was adopted by a loving family that understood her needs and would give her the patience and love she craved to continue making progress. That would not have been possible without the support of monthly donors like you.

September 2023 – Carrie T. Pet Food Bank and Administrative Volunteer Volunteer for 1 year

We asked Carrie what she looks forward to doing as a volunteer and she said, “Learning more about the work of the Hawaiian Humane Society, especially with the opening of the ‘Ewa campus when services are expanded to the west side of the island where the need is so great. Having an expanded campus so centrally located and available to our community, will ultimately lead to healthier and happier animals!

Although I am not currently a pet owner, this work allows me to still connect with dogs and cats which have always been in my life.”

We asked Wayne what advice he would give to someone just joining our volunteer team and he said, “I would say, be open to learning and ask questions. The entire staff has been very helpful and supportive!”

We asked Shizuka about her favorite part of her role and she said, “When the shy dogs warm up or dirty spots get cleaned, there is a sense of accomplishment.”

Pet Food Bank Volunteers Pet Kōkua by Hawaiian Humane’s Pet Food Bank provides temporary assistance to pet owners struggling to feed their animals. We are seeking Pet Food Bank volunteers to fill our Sunday and Wednesday shifts at our Kosasa Family Campus at Ho‘opili.

Off-site Cat Adoptions These volunteers care for and provide enrichment to the cats housed at PETCOs around the island, while they wait to be adopted. Responsibilities include cleaning and preparing cat lounge rooms each morning before potential adopters arrive.

Foster Care Foster volunteers help animals in need of temporary tender, loving care. They provide temporary homes to shelter animals that may be too young, or are in need of recuperative care or socialization before adoption. As kitten season continues, we remain in need of neonate kitten foster volunteers.

Walking the Extra Mile: Elevating Dog Walker Training for Volunteers In November 2023, Hawaiian Humane’s Volunteer Services team and behavior consultant, Marissa Martino, led a series of hands-on training sessions for volunteers on our newly re-vamped dog behavior and walking protocols. These valuable sessions were widely attended by dog walking volunteers of various experience, setting them up for safety and success when providing crucial exercise and enrichment for the dogs in our care.

The Incredible Dr. Pol Visits Our Kosasa Family Campus at Ho‘opili Our Kosasa Family Campus at Ho‘opili was honored to host Dr. Jan and Diane Pol of National Geographic’s The Incredible Dr. Pol on November 9, 2023. They were invited by Hawaiian Humane supporter and past adopter, Peggy Aurand, with whom they were staying while on vacation here on O‘ahu.

After a tour led by our Associate Director of the Kosasa Family Campus, Michelle Garcia, Dr. Pol and Diane graciously took the time to meet and take photos with our Veterinary Services, Pet Kōkua Admissions, Animal Care, Adoptions and Volunteer Services teams. HUMANE EDUCATION: INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION OF ANIMAL WELFARE CHAMPIONS

Learning from the ‘Aina: Teens4Animals Council Studies Ethical and Responsible Farming at Kualoa Ranch The Teens4Animals spent their first quarterly meeting at Kualoa Ranch, where they learned about the importance of ethical and responsible farming.

At Kualoa Ranch, the Teens were taken on a tour of the small livestock facilities by Kualoa's Diversified Agriculture and Small Livestock Manager Austin Tom.

During this first-of-its-kind tour by Kualoa Ranch, the Teens were able to meet some pigs, learn about different terms we see in supermarkets, review the pros and cons of different breeds of turkeys, and so much more. We are so grateful to our friends at Kualoa Ranch for giving us this amazing opportunity!

Readers of the Pack: Deck the Howls Edition We kicked off the holiday season on December 18 and 19, 2023, at our Mō‘ili‘ili and Kosasa Family campuses with the Deck the Howls Edition of Readers of the Pack, an event led by our Manager of Education Programs, Anne Mukai, and the Teens4Animals Council. This annual festive tradition invites local keiki and their families to join us on campus and read to our shelter animals, promoting youth literacy, as well as socialization and enrichment for pets. This holiday edition also offered festive arts and crafts, as well as delicious milk and cookies for guests.
