On International Student Support at Haverford

Haverford has an incredible International Student Support Office. I cannot express the way that Natasha Weisz, Assistant Dean for International Student Support, is dedicated to making us feel at home, safe, cared for, and assisted in the best way possible

Additionally, I believe Haverford, in general, has great support offices, from the Deans to the Chesick Scholars office, I can say confidently that most faculty and staff are here to support you in any way, shape, or form.

ANUBHAV

Major: Computer Science

Career: Chen spent a year as a rotation software engineer in Apple’s Seattle-based artificial intelligence/machine learning program, and now works as a software engineer for Apple.

The Haverford Experience: Chen credits a fellow Ford for helping him find his way to Apple. Jiawen (Ivy) Zhang ’21 recommended the 12-month AI/ML rotation opportunity, having participated in the program herself, and even acted as a referral. “She’s been super kind and supportive,” said Chen, noting that Zhang also shared “her insights into career development, including networking, onboarding a new team, expanding professional connections, and more.”

Majors: Mathematics and Computer Science

Career: As an associate software engineer at Morningstar Inc., Sharma is part of a quantitative research team that works on internal application development for quant and manager research analysts.

The Haverford Experience: Beyond academics, Sharma found that his involvement with Students’ Council and the Honor Council, as well as his engagement with new students through ISO, Horizons, and Customs, both facilitated personal growth and honed key leadership skills like communication, decision-making, and problem-solving. “It is easy to overlook these soft skills,” he notes, in a technical job like his. “But I constantly communicate with internal teams, the product manager and the stakeholders, as well as other engineers.”

On Research at Haverford

I really enjoyed working at the Institute for Integrated Development Studies, a Kathmandu-based think tank, as a part of my CPGC Summer Fellowship. One of my favorite projects there was working for the Nepal Infrastructure Summit.

I co-wrote a policy brief analyzing Nepal’s public procurement policies.

I really appreciated the fact that I was able to use my skills to contribute to my country’s economic development in some way.

Major: Mathematics and Linguistics

Graduate Study: Carvalho began a PhD in math at the University of Michigan, Ann Abor, where he is studying algebraic combinatorics.

The Haverford Experience: Carvalho thanks his thesis advisor, Associate Professor of Mathematics and Statistics Elizabeth Milićević, for giving him the strong foundation in algebraic combinatorics that led him to his PhD program. He selected Michigan due to the school’s postdoctoral opportunities and its strong group in algebraic combinatorics. He is looking forward to a career in math, though he doesn’t yet know if he will want to stay in academia after getting his PhD or work in data science or quantitative finance.

Major: Economics

Career: Kesicki has launched his post-Haverford career in management consulting with Bain & Company in Houston, Texas.

The Haverford Experience: As an international student, Kesicki is grateful for the supportive, accessible community he found at Haverford. Dean Kelly Wilcox served as a sounding board for his thoughts and ideas, he recalls, and Assistant Dean for International Student Support Natasha Weisz made the international experience as seamless as possible. To help ensure a positive experience for other international students, Kesicki chose a campus job with the Office of International Student Support. “My greatest accomplishment in the office,” he says, “was developing a career panel series specifically for international students.”

What I like most is the general sense of collaboration and support. As a STEM student, I love being able to work on homework problem sets with my friends.

All of my professors not only allow collaboration, but actively encourage it through in-class group problem sessions.

I also love that everyone celebrates others’ successes, and encourages one another to pursue opportunities that will make them enjoy their time at Haverford.

Learn at Haverford

The core of the classroom experience at Haverford is learning from the professors’ direct research and scholarship and having the opportunity to be an active, vital participant in every class. It is expected that all students will be involved in research. Students become true collaborators and trusted colleagues in the classroom.

International Student Body

100% of students complete research by the time they graduate

Haverford is one of the very few institutions at which every student will produce a senior thesis or project. This capstone academic experience offers every Haverford student the chance to develop and execute original scholarly work, leading to a deep understanding of what it takes to create knowledge and seek answers to challenging questions.

ACADEMIC CENTERS

The Hurford Center for the Arts and Humanities, the Koshland Integrated Natural Sciences Center, and the Center for Peace and Global Citizenship play an essential role by invigorating the arts on campus, supporting cutting edge research, and by sending Haverford students across the globe on internships. Above all, the Centers enrich scholarship beyond the boundaries of the traditional classroom.

HONOR CODE

Haverford’s unique, student-governed Honor Code encompasses both the academic and social spheres of life, influencing everything from the spirit of intellectual inquiry to personal interactions. The Honor Code is not a set of rules, but rather an articulation of ideals and expectations emphasizing genuine connection and engagement with one another in an atmosphere of trust, concern, and respect.

BEYOND HAVERFORD

Haverford alumni take their talents to elite graduate schools, marquee employers, and far-flung locations across the world. The skills, wisdom, and disposition you develop through Haverford’s liberal arts lens can be applied to so many different fields and careers all over the planet. As a Ford, you’ll automatically stand out in the world, and be better able to inform, heal, and improve it.

INTERNATIONAL

Haverford is located on an 81-hectare arboretum campus only 13 kilometers from downtown Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Philadelphia provides a wealth of historical, cultural, and social resources, including world-class museums and renowned restaurants, all of which are easily accessible by public transportation—as is the Philadelphia International Airport.

I like how Haverford can both provide me with a sense of tranquility through its suburban location and opportunities to engage with real-world issues with its proximity to Philly. Despite being located in the suburbs, life at Haverford is very convenient—I can get to everything I need within a 20-to30-minute walk. It also feels very safe to be in and around campus. Haverford also offers numerous opportunities to engage with local and Philly communities. This allows me to connect with people with more racially and socio-economically diverse backgrounds and gain insights into real-life issues.

CONSORTIUMS

The curriculum, faculty, and facilities at Haverford offer an extraordinary range of possibilities. Beyond this, Haverford, Bryn Mawr, and Swarthmore Colleges comprise the Tri-College Consortium. Students may cross-register for classes amongst the three schools, and there is significant social interaction, along with free transportation to both Bryn Mawr and Swarthmore. Haverford students may also take courses at the University of Pennsylvania, including the Wharton School of Business The University of Pennsylvania partners with Haverford on accelerated master’s degree programs in engineering, bioethics, and city planning.
