Varsity Four Back on Top A Summer of Success Senior Admittance 2018 Fall Racing 2019 Spring Preview Crew Endowment

15 Years, the wait is over...

In the tradition of Haverford School rowing the team has been known for its dominance at Nationals in both the Varsity Quad and Varsity Four. Unfortunately, it had been close to 15-plus years since the team has dominated in either event for a spring season.

In 2018 things changed. With only 3 seniors on the team they wanted to make their mark on getting back on top.

As things progressed through the racing season they fully dedicated themselves to the Varsity Four.

After crushing the field at the PSRA City Championships, the boat ran into some tough crews from Canada and a couple hiccups in the finals at Stotes to knock them out of the medals.

With only a week in between Stotes and Nationals, Coach Stephanik made a drastic change to get more speed, switching the boat from port to starboard stroked and adjusting the line-up. The boat never looked back and over the three races at SRAA’s they just kept getting faster.

Summer Rowing in Conshohocken

Many may remember rowing and competing for Undine in the summers. Now, every summer Haverford athletes get an opportunity to row with many athletes from around the area at the Conshohocken Rowing Center. Since its opening, the CRC has been running a summer competitive program. With growth in numbers, success has followed.

This has opened the door to new opportunities and friendships to guys on the Haverford School team. Over the last few years CRC has won at all levels of summer rowing. CRC has won the points trophy at the Philly Youth Regatta 4 straight years. We are now winning medals in sculling boats every year at US Rowing Club Nationals.

CRC and Haverford athletes have won Gold twice now at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta.

This past summer, two Haverford athletes got to step on the podium in St. Catherine’s winning gold in the U19 Mens Quad. Tim Scheuritzel ‘18, now rowing at Princeton, and Thomas Russell ‘19, just committed to row at Penn. Tim stroked the quad and Thomas steered from the bow.

Where did they go to College?

Haverford School rowers are always known for going to some of the top schools in the country. Some continue their rowing careers and others focus on academics. The last 6 years has not been anything different even though recruiting has turned more international.

Ivy’s and Sprints teams are always attractive and the team has produced some top level recruits. Since taking over the reigns 6-plus years ago Coach Stephanik has helped place (3) athletes at U Penn, (3) Dartmouth, (2) Princeton, (2) Stanford, (2) MIT, and others at Boston University, Navy, Georgetown, GW, Trinity, Colgate, Hobart, Bucknell, Lehigh, and several other college and club programs. Though sometimes the team is overlooked on campus, these results speak for them self.

2018 Fall Season Recap The fall 2018 season was determined to be a season of improvement, especially with technique. Starting out, Coach Stephanik was not pleased with some of the habits that were forming within the underclassman, so it was back to the basics.

Service Learning

By the end of the fall it was evident that the transition helped. The upperclassman started out the fall racing season with five top 5 finishes at the Navy Day Regatta. The team gathered eight top 10 finishes at the Head of the Schulykill with five of those boats finishing in the top 5 and the Freshman quad winning their event.

Another highlight of the fall season was that a few Haverford rowers raced a composite boat under the Conshohocken Rowing Center title and placed 7th out of 85 entries at the Head of the Charles.

With a lot of progress made and a strong developing group of underclassman, the spring season brings hope and good expectations.

This is the 4th year the crew team has done their service learning at Rushton Farm on the Willistown Preserve.

Starting the morning running the property and then doing farm work until lunch, the team does about two weeks of work in 3-4 hours.

The workers on the farm look forward to our yearly visit. Each year the boys pick potatoes and other vegetables, clear green houses, and remove tomato vines and stakes.

The food that is picked and harvested is donated to local food banks.

PARTICIPATION! PARTICIPATION! PARTICIPATION! Along with the help of the FHSR and cooperation of The Haverford School Development Office, Coach Jonathan Stephanik is reaching out to Crew alumni for support.

As you all know, there are no ‘Benches’ in rowing. Everyone participates. This is why Coach Stephanik is asking everyone who is capable to give. Each gift is a 5-year commitment and goes towards the The Haverford School Crew Endowment for Rowing Operations.

Here is the plan on how this is going to work. We have over 700 alumni that rowed at Haverford. We need:

250 people to commit to $100 per year for 5 years $ 125,000

150 people to commit to $250 per year for 5 years $ 187,500

100 people to commit to $500 per year for 5 years $ 250,000

50 people to commit to $1000 per year for 5 years $ 250,000

25 people to commit to $2500 per year for 5 years $ 312,500

10 people to commit to $5000 per year for 5 years $ 250,000 This plan would generate close to $1.4 million and would elevate the endowment to close to $3.5 million. The end goal is $5.5 million. We want to operate fully funded and independently from the school’s yearly operating budget. It will not only allow Haverford School boys to participate in crew with no additional fees, but just like many of you were always the ‘first to cross the finish line’, Haverford Crew would be the first team to make this happen at our school.

Everyone that rowed at The Haverford School took something away that has helped make them who they are today. Please help in providing those same opportunities and lessons for the Haverford Rowers of the future.
