Dear Alumni and Friends, My office at Haverford is a shrine to our rowing program. From a miniature Haverford oar on the wall to trophies, plaques and pictures, there are no less than a dozen items displayed that remind me of the tradition and success of the program and the potential for making even more history this year and for years to come. One particular photo is of the quad that went to Henley in 1997, arguably one of the best high school quads ever assembled at The Haverford School. To me, it represents all that makes the program great, then, now and in the future.

The crew that went to Henley 20 years ago was remarkable in so many ways. While their performance fell just shy of winning the event (3 feet or less to be exact), they were the complete picture of our program. They were scholars. All of the boys were exceptional students. They were gentlemen. All of the boys represented the school well. They worked hard as a crew. All of the boys won multiple national championships in rowing. Their efforts in all areas is what the sport at Haverford is about, and to become a man of great character is the result.

Fast forward to present day and you can see many aspects of the program have changed, but the message remains the same. We have a new boathouse and row on a different part of the Schuylkill. Less boat traffic and a closer drive from school create significant advantages for the boys. Our equipment has changed. Long gone are wooden boats and macon blades. Finally and of greatest importance, our coaching staff is relatively new to Haverford but consistent with our message. Coach Jonathan Stephanik understands the expectations of our program and in following in the footsteps of legendary coach Jim Barker is creating his own legacy of success. In four short years, Coach Stephanik continues the schools winning tradition and the expectation of building more than great rowers, but great men. On the water and off, the boys are exceptional and it shows. This we believe will lead them to great things today and in the future.

The future of our program began four years ago with the hiring of Coach Stephanik and the start to our boathouse project. Today, the future of the program is bright. This summer we will return to Henley for the first time in 20 years. Alumni, we hope, will join us as Dr. Nagl and I host all supporters of our crew at several events. If the boys work like the young men in 1997, we will see great success, win or lose. We also have a future development program building in our middle school. This year, there are 47 middle school students rowing and learning our traditions. If they continue to learn and progress, we expect they too will find success in rowing and in making our program all that is was and all that it will be again.

After the spring 2016 season

closing with a lot of success and a number of guys racing throughout the summer, there was high hopes for fall results.

Forty-two athletes particpated in fall crew. The team rowed 4 days on the water and land workouts 2 other.

Each fall race season starts off with the Navy Day Regatta. The last few years the top 8 guys have rowed in the Open Eight event to test their speed against collegiate and club boats. They then split into two boats to race the quad and Fours. The eight placed higher than 13 collegiate boats and then finished with 2 boats in the top 5 of the Four event. In Boston at the Head of the Charles the Fords raced the Eight, Double, and Quadwith. The Quad and Double both requalified for next year.

The fall season was capped off with the Head of the Schuylkill.

All athletes raced and the boys brought home a Gold and Bronze.

After day-light savings has us ‘fall-back’ we transition to winter training and start preparing for the spring sprint season. Winters consist of 3 erg workouts and 2 lifts each week.

12-15 guys worked throughout the winter anticpating the water again and the regrouping of the full squad.

CHOPPY WATERS

Henley 2017 It has been 20 years since The Haverford School has been represented on the Thames in England. Coach Stephanik feels that with the success over the last 3 seasons no time is better than now.

The squad hopes to bring both an Eight and spares to represent the Fords from June 28th to July 2nd.

Alums back on the Schuylkill At the Head of the Schuylkill this past fall, several alums put together a boat to compete in the Alumni Event. With current Haverford coxswain Nelson Liu on the strings, the Fords alumni finsished 9th out of 21 entries. Some guys dropped out last minute so a few friends stepped in.

In England, we will also be celebrating the 50 year anniversary of the Henley boat from 1957 with Ted Hoag, Taylor Buckley, Baird Morgan, and Tom Russell.

With the Henley on the tips of everyone’s tongue, goals and standards are set to become the fastest boats in the area.

Our focus will still be one race at a time with the 1st Manny Flick being on March 19th. The team is probably going to be one of the more talented squads we have had in the past 5 years, but we still need to make it mesh on the water.

A strong senior class will lead the way and instill the leadership in both the Varsity Eight and Varsity Quad. We could potentially support a Varsity Double and Varsity Four given the group we have returning. The 2016 Freshman and Novice group did not lose a race at City’s last spring and the will complement others to fill in nicely in defending our medals in the Junior categories. The Freshman and Novice group for 2017 continues to grow and has a number of expereinced guys from our middle school program and summer camps.

Overall the group is excited to get on the water and start taking strokes to reach the goals set out by the coaches and upperclassmen. Again, this year the PSRA City Championships fall on Alumni Weekend, May 6th & 7th. All are welcome to visit the trailer or tent to meet the team and reflect on old stories.

Along with the help of the FHSR and cooperation of The Haverford School Development Office, Coach Jonathan Stephanik has launched The Haverford School Crew Endowment for Rowing Operations

With over $1.7 million dollars in place already, the goal is to reach $5 million. This will allow the team to operate fully funded and not pull from the school’s yearly operating budget. It will not only allow Haverford School boys to participate in crew with no additional fees, but it will instill that rowing will be part of Haverford School Athletics for eternity. There are a number a ways to dedicate your gifts: •Endow Athlete Participation •Endow Equipment •Endow Coaching •Give a gift to the general endowment All gifts are strictly dedicated to the Crew Program and can only be used for the team.

Everyone that rowed at The Haverford School took something away that has helped make them who they are today. Please help in providing those same opportunities and lessons for the Haverford Rowers of the future.
