Hurrican Ida Special Gift Fall 2021 Recap Spring 2022 Schedule Support the Program

The Damage and Recovery of Ida

Who thought that the 150-year storm would happen twice in one year? No one did, but unfortunately the boathouse flooded for the second time in September during Hurricane Ida.

Water heights surpassed 8 feet high in the boat bays causing wreckage and chaos inside and outside the building. The team had prepared for 4 feet of water in the bays, far higher than any other storm had predicted.

The floors were completely emptied and boats that were around four feet were secured and strapped down to the racks. All the other equipment was moved to higher racks or put in the great room on the second floor.

Special Gift from Bob Blakely ‘59 After hearing of the hardships of the team post Hurrican Ida, a number of alumni reached out to see how they could help. Robert Blakely ‘59, connected with Coach Stephanik and worked out what would benefit the team moving forward. He felt it was the right time to do something and felt giving back to support the equipment needs was the best option. With Bob’s gift and direction, the team was able to buy a new Eight and boat trailer that will be ready for the spring 2022 season. Bob hopes this will encourage other alumni to support the program and make sure the boys have everything they need to be successful. Thank you Bob! 2021 Fall Season

The Haverford School Crew had an adjusted fall schedule this year due to the aftermath of Hurricane Ida. The crew program had to adjust its normal fall training model to make sure that the 50-plus athletes could get on the river most days for training and head-race preparation.

With all the early local fall regattas being cancelled due to all the docks needing to be repaired or replaced, fall racing started out with a scrimmage against local Unionville High School. Haverford hosted Unionville and did (6) pieces with the Varsity and JV Fours. The JV Four won all of their pieces, and the Varsity boat split 3-3 with the Unionville crew. This Unionville boat would go on to place 4th at the Head of the Charles in Boston. The Fords took four boats up the prestigious Head of the Charles. up in Boston. The highlight of the weekend was the Boys Double that placed 14th out of 55 entries, automatically requalifying for next year. The team also had entries in the Coxed Four, Coxed Quad, and Directors Quad events.

The Head of the Schuylkill Regatta followed, and this was a full squad regatta. The Varsity double of Jake Brewington and Chase Herz placed 4th out of 35. The Frosh/Novice quad and Varsity Quads both placed 5th. The JV Quad and JV Four both finished 7th, and the Varsity Four finished 13th out of 57 boats in their event. The Fords also had boats in the Frosh/Novice Eight, Frosh/Novice Four, JV eight, and 2nd boats in the Varsity Double, JV Quad and Novice quad events.

The Fords wrapped up the fall season with the Hidden River Regatta. The team took six boats to compete in a 1st boat/2nd boat model of head racing on the lower Schuylkill River. The Frosh/Novice quad of Joseph Herd, Noah Kanefsky, Charlie Gord, and Johnny Herd won the 2nd quad event in a time of 15.25, 2nd place was 25 seconds back. The 1st Four also had success finishing second place in their event, in the boat for the Fords was Quinton Bowers, Cameron Douglas, Cole Pressman, Jackson Harrington, and Alphonso Evans.

The Fords also had entries in the 1st Quad, 2nd Four, and additional entries in the 2nd quad and 1st four events.

Next up the Fords will kick off their spring season with Manny Flick 1 on Sunday, March 20, 2022.
