Henley 2017 Recap Alumni at HOS 2017 2017 Fall Racing 2018 Spring Schedule

Haverford Crew Returns to England In a trip of a lifetime, student-athletes from The Haverford School crew team traveled to England to compete in one of the world’s most prestigious rowing events: the Henley Royal Regatta, June 28-July 2. It was the first time since 1997 that Haverford has competed at Henley.

After a rigorous few weeks of training on the Schuylkill, and a few days practice on the Thames, the boys’ Varsity Eight turned-in what looked to be a very fast June 23 time trial qualifier, yet no one knew for sure. Nervous anticipation erupted into cheers as The Haverford School was announced as one of the schools that qualified for the main draw. Although the boys were defeated in the main event by a very fast Deerfield Academy boat from Massachusetts, the trip was a resounding success. Rowing in the Varsity Eight (by seat position) were Tim Scheuritzel, Davis Martinelli, Andrew Farmer, Henry Scarlato, Aidan Leavy, Joseph O’Brien, Michael Boston, Jack Costello, and Nelson Liu. Highlights included rowing in the Reading Town Regatta in neighboring Reading, England, where Jeff Pendergast and David McKay defeated a team from Australia to come in first overall in the men’s Intermediate Double; experiencing a proper British tea on the grounds of the regatta hosted by Haverford alumnus Blaine Krickl ’59, who now lives in Henley; and attending a private party for the team and parents along with Malvern Prep at the exclusive Phyllis Court Club on the bank of the Thames. Also in attendance were Headmaster John Nagl and members of the Haverford School crew team of 1957. The trip was planned and coordinated by Head Coach Jonathan Stephanik (who also personally designed the team blazers), and the boys were joined by Assistant Coach John Suter. 2017 Fall Season Recap

The crew team went into the fall season with high expectations and were hoping to be competitive in both sweep and sculling events.

They did just that starting the fall off at the Navy Day Regatta, placing 2nd in both the Open Quad event and Youth Four events. The B-quad raced in the Youth Quad event and placed 3rd overall.

At the Head of the Charles the Fords brought a Youth Four and Youth Quad with coxswain. The four started 62nd out of 86 entires, pretty far back in the pack, but with some good steering, a few collisions, and some hard pulling they placed 19th overall and requalified for next year’s event.

At the Head of the Schuylkill the crew team brought home 5 medals, the most in recent history of them attending. They placed 1st in the Varsity double, 3rd in the Varsity four, 3rd in the Varsity Quad, 2nd in the JV Single, and 2nd in the Frosh/Novice Quad.

With strong improvement throughout the fall, the team is excited about their spring campaign.

Service Learning

It was last second planning but the Fords Alumni were still able to enter a boat for this years Regatta. This is the second year in a row and hopes are for multiple entries in 2018.

If you are interested in competing in 2018, please reach out to Andrew Bailey or Coach Stephanik.

For the last 3 years the crew team has done a service learning day at Rushton Farm on the Willistown Preserve.

Starting the morning running the property and then doing farm work until lunch, the team does about two weeks of work in 4-5 hours.

The workers on the farm look forward to our yearly visit. Each year the boys pick potatoes and other vegetables, clear green houses, and remove tomato vines and stakes.

The food that is picked and harvested is donatined to local food banks.

Along with the help of the FHSR and cooperation of The Haverford School Development Office, Coach Jonathan Stephanik has launched The Haverford School Crew Endowment for Rowing Operations

With close to $2 million dollars in place already, the goal is to reach $5 million. This will allow the team to operate fully funded and independently from the school’s yearly operating budget. It will not only allow Haverford School boys to participate in crew with no additional fees, but it will instill that rowing will be part of Haverford School Athletics for eternity. There are a number a ways to dedicate your gifts: •Endow Athlete Participation •Endow Equipment •Endow Coaching •Give a gift to the general endowment All gifts are strictly dedicated to the Crew Program and can only be used for the team.

Everyone that rowed at The Haverford School took something away that has helped make them who they are today. Please help in providing those same opportunities and lessons for the Haverford Rowers of the future.
