En tournant les pages du Yearbook de cette année, nous nous remémorons les nombreux moments qui ont marqué notre parcours commun au cours de l’année écoulée. Chaque cliché capture non seulement des images, mais aussi les rires, les amitiés et les souvenirs que nous avons créés. Plus qu’un simple livre, il s’agit d’un souvenir des nombreux moments heureux que nous avons partagés ensemble et de notre communauté dynamique.

Chaque page reflète nos expériences uniques, mettant en valeur les différentes voix et talents qui rendent notre école si spéciale. Yearbook Cover Competition Entries

Thank you to the students who participated in the Yearboook Cover competition. Well done to everyone who entered, but as with any competition, there has to be a winner.

After much deliberating, 1st place was awarded to Yuki MYP5, her design is on the front cover. Taking 2nd place, and featured on the back cover, Margaux and Sofia, P4 and P2. We’d also like to give a special mention to Alaynah MYP4, taking 3rd place, her design is featured at the end of the book

Welcome to Haut-Lac’s 17th Yearbook

The phrase “how times have changed” no longer spans decades. Today, it feels as if the world has changed dramatically just since the last Yearbook. Change now comes at a breathtaking pace. Government policies struggle to anticipate both future and current strategies. So much of the world is in flux and stability is becoming a rare luxury.

I recall an essay title from my college days -almost 60 years ago: “School mirrors society –discuss.” Many ideas from that discussion may still be philosophically relevant but, in practice, many education systems have seen few fundamental changes for decades. Originally, schools served three main roles. First, they were founded by religious institutions to teach core subjects and promote specific beliefs. Later, during the Industrial Revolution, schools kept children occupied while parents worked long hours. Without school, many children roamed the streets, often getting up to varying degrees of mischief. Eventually, governments took over education, aiming to prepare young people to join the required factory or office work force necessary to sustain the economic status quo. Schools, it seemed, inevitably reflected whatever society had created them.

But now, society – and the job market – is changing so fast that schools are struggling to anticipate future demand. How can we prepare young people for careers that may not even exist yet? At Haut-Lac, while we monitor these changes, we strive to maintain a steady environment where students can learn in relative calm.

That’s why a holistic, bilingual school like Haut-Lac is more than just “a nice experience.” Haut-Lac offers an enquiry and investigation based curriculum, not a regurgitation of facts based on a rote learning system with very little thought or understanding of what is being studied. There are many other advantages at Haut-Lac, multilingual and multicultural, we rise above religious, political and racial divides. We aim to live, learn and grow in mutual respect – and this Yearbook reflects that vision.

Thirty-three years ago, Haut-Lac was founded with that aim in mind. We wanted an environment where children could thrive in at least two languages, supported by a dedicated, united team without any unnecessary hierarchy. Everyone in school is on first-name terms, our mission is to help students achieve through guidance not though unquestionable orders.

At school events, we often see the former students who have gone on to university success at many levels progressing on to outstanding careers in areas that were unthought of when they sat their IB exams. We can no longer feel certain we’re preparing students for a predictable future, we have to see each child as an individual with their own individual pathway. We try to accompany them on their journey, encourage them to develop their interests and discover their passions.

At Haut-Lac, teachers and students learn together. We believe true learning isn’t about memorising manipulated facts, ‘‘history is mainly written by the victors’’, but about questioning, thinking critically and discovering our own conclusions. We want our students to ask questions, make their own choices, and develop into resilient, thoughtful and caring adults.

We’re all fellow travellers on a perilous road into an increasingly uncertain future, we do all we can to guide our young children and students through the pitfalls of growing up in our present, frequently indifferent, society.

Bienvenue dans le 17ème Yearbook de Haut-Lac

L'expression « comme les temps ont changé » ne s'étend plus sur des décennies. Aujourd'hui, on a l'impression que le monde a changé radicalement depuis le dernier Yearbook. Les changements se succèdent à un rythme effréné. Les politiques gouvernementales peinent à anticiper les stratégies futures et actuelles. Une grande partie du monde est en mouvement et la stabilité devient un luxe rare.

Je me souviens d'un titre de dissertation datant de mes années d'université, il y a près de 60 ans : « L'école est le miroir de la sociétédiscutez-en ». De nombreuses idées de cette discussion peuvent encore être pertinentes d'un point de vue philosophique mais, dans la pratique, de nombreux systèmes éducatifs n'ont connu que peu de changements fondamentaux depuis des décennies. À l'origine, les écoles jouaient trois rôles principaux. Tout d'abord, elles étaient fondées par des institutions religieuses pour enseigner des matières fondamentales et promouvoir des croyances spécifiques. Ensuite, pendant la révolution industrielle, les écoles occupaient les enfants pendant que les parents travaillaient de longues heures. Sans école, de nombreux enfants erraient dans les rues, se livrant souvent à des méfaits plus ou moins graves. Finalement, les gouvernements ont pris le contrôle de l'éducation, dans le but de préparer les jeunes à rejoindre la maind'œuvre requise dans les usines ou les bureaux, nécessaire au maintien du statu quo économique. Les écoles, semble-t-il, reflétaient inévitablement la société qui les avait créées.

Mais aujourd'hui, la société - et le marché du travail - évolue si rapidement que les écoles ont du mal à anticiper la demande future. Comment préparer les jeunes à des carrières qui n'existent peut-être pas encore ?

À Haut-Lac, tout en surveillant ces changements, nous nous efforçons de maintenir un environnement stable où les élèves peuvent apprendre dans un calme relatif.

C'est pourquoi une école holistique et bilingue comme Haut-Lac est plus qu'une simple « expérience agréable ». Haut-Lac propose un programme d'études basé sur la recherche et l'investigation, et non une régurgitation de faits basée sur un système d'apprentissage par cœur avec très peu de réflexion ou de

compréhension de ce qui est étudié.

Haut-Lac présente de nombreux autres avantages : multilingues et multiculturels, nous dépassons les clivages religieux, politiques et raciaux. Notre objectif est de vivre, d'apprendre et de grandir dans le respect mutuel - et ce Yearbook reflète cette vision.

Il y a trente-trois ans, Haut-Lac a été fondé avec cet objectif en tête. Nous voulions un environnement où les enfants pourraient s'épanouir dans au moins deux langues, soutenus par une équipe dévouée et unie, sans hiérarchie inutile. Tout le monde à l'école se tutoie, notre mission est d'aider les élèves à réussir en les guidant et non en leur donnant des ordres indiscutables.

Lors des événements organisés par l'école, nous voyons souvent d'anciens élèves qui ont réussi à l'université à de nombreux niveaux et qui poursuivent des carrières exceptionnelles dans des domaines auxquels ils n'avaient pas pensé lorsqu'ils ont passé leurs examens de l'IB. Nous ne pouvons plus avoir la certitude que nous préparons les élèves à un avenir prévisible, nous devons considérer chaque enfant comme un individu avec son propre parcours. Nous essayons de les accompagner dans leur évolution, de les encourager à développer leurs intérêts et à découvrir leurs passions.

À Haut-Lac, les enseignants et les élèves apprennent ensemble. Nous pensons que le véritable apprentissage ne consiste pas à mémoriser des faits manipulés, l'histoire étant principalement écrite par les vainqueurs, mais à poser des questions, à penser de manière critique et à découvrir nos propres conclusions. Nous voulons que nos élèves posent des questions, fassent leurs propres choix et deviennent des adultes résilients, réfléchis et bienveillants.

Nous sommes tous des compagnons de route sur un chemin périlleux vers un avenir de plus en plus incertain. Nous faisons tout ce qui est en notre pouvoir pour guider nos jeunes enfants et nos étudiants à travers les pièges de la croissance dans notre société actuelle, souvent indifférente.

Le temps s’envole si vite ! Les enfants en sont la preuve car chaque jour ils acquièrent de nouvelles compétences et habiletés.

Les vastes espaces des Marronniers accueillent les enfants en secteurs constitués par âge (les trotteurs et les grands) qui sont subdivisés en quatre groupes de vie : abeilles, hérissons, hirondelles et papillons, dont le nombre constitutif est strictement respecté, en fonction des directives cantonales.

Dans chaque groupe, une éducatrice, secondée par une stagiaire ou apprentie applique le principe de Ronjat-Grammont, (en anglais OPOL One Parent One Language) et sensibilise les enfants au français ou à l’anglais, en s’exprimant et en demandant de répondre dans la langue utilisée.

Un tournus assure que chacun des membres de l’équipe soit en relation avec tous les groupes et surtout, connaisse parfaitement chaque enfant, car la sécurité affective de nos petits est primordiale pour qu’ils se développent dans d’autres domaines.

Une journée aux Marronniers

Nos journées ont en commun l’accomplissement de notre mission première envers les enfants : agir de manière à répondre à leurs besoins ! C’est Abraham Maslow qui nous recommande d’abord la réponse aux besoins physiologiques, étroitement suivie des besoins émotionnels et sécuritaires, pour ainsi leur permettre d’accéder à d’autres étapes.

Inspirées par le proverbe français « L’enfant qui ne sait pas jouer, deviendra un adulte qui ne sait pas penser », ainsi que sur la base des recherches en neurosciences à ce propos, l’équipe prépare chaque jour le matériel et des activités de manière attirante pour que les enfants puissent s’adonner à leur métier d’enfants : apprendre en jouant !

Edouard Claparède dirait que grâce à une flaque d’eau, ils ont réalisé un jeu sensoriel, moteur, psychique, affectif, d’imagination et social, qui leur a permis de découvrir les sciences, de mesurer et coordonner ses mouvements, de se faire une place parmi ses copains, de répondre aux questions des éducatrices, d’exprimer ses sensations, d’expérimenter et d’apprendre en ayant du plaisir.

Nos incontournables

Aux Marronniers, les enfants sont en MOUVEMENT, tous les jours ils sont emmenés à l’extérieur, ce qui profite à leur santé, favorise la régularité de leur biorythme et stimule leur imagination. Et quoi dire de leur auto-estime car ils sont inlassablement complimentés par les badauds de la ville lorsqu’ils portent leurs cirés de pluie ou leurs jolis chapeaux d’été.

L’AUTONOMIE est aussi une compétence que l’équipe tient à cœur d’offrir aux enfants. Ils participent à préparer leurs lits, à s’habiller et à se déshabiller, à participer debout lors du changement des couches, à aider leurs copains. Etant actifs et valorisés pour faire « tous seuls », ils apprennent des actions, des notions, tout en exerçant leur sentiment de contrôle et de compétence et aussi leur résilience…des précieuses « soft skills » acquises pour leur avenir.

L’EXPRESSION DES EMOTIONS a été mise à l’honneur cette année. Des bonhommes « faits maison », ont peuplé les groupes. Ils aident les enfants à apprendre qu’il y a plusieurs émotions, qu’elles ont des noms, que c’est permis de les éprouver et les exprimer. Même la colère est accueillie sur le coussin qui leur permet de l’évacuer sans se faire mal et apprendre à gérer progressivement leurs pulsions. Encore un outil précieux pour leurs relations en collectivité présentes et futures.

Activités complémentaires

Une fois par semaine, un groupe à la fois, part arpenter les forêts des environs et apprécier les changements des saisons. Mais en été, la destination privilégiée est la pataugeoire de la piscine de Corseaux. L’un comme l’autre permettent à nos petits de faire des belles expériences avec la nature.

Également une fois par semaine, des ateliers de cuisine sont réalisés. S’il y a des anniversaires, ils seront tous célébrés à la crèche. Les enfants participent activement à l’élaboration de leurs gâteaux d’anniversaire, avant de les savourer avec leurs amis. Les produits sont jalousement contrôlés par leurs labels et le sucre n’est pas invité aux célébrations.

Notre « mardi écologique » est toujours d’actualité. Chaque groupe de la crèche sème, arrose, fait pousser les fruits et les récolte… s’ils arrivent à maturité et ont résisté à la tentation des passants de se servir. Un grand merci aux voisins qui arrosent nos bacs pendant les fermetures de la crèche !

Les jeudis, les ateliers yoga apportent tellement aux enfants dans le développement, leur coordination, leur équilibre et leur expression, que les enfants et éducatrices les attendent avec impatience !

Et les vendredis, le professeur de musique de l’école Haut-Lac joue des mélodies variées lors d’un atelier. Il permet aussi aux enfants de découvrir des instruments de musique et d’apprendre des chansons en lien avec nos thèmes du mois.

Avec un enthousiasme sans égal, ni les enfants ni l’équipe des Marronniers ne connaissent l’ennui.

Formation continue

La fondation As’trame est venue à la crèche pour outiller le personnel avec des stratégies permettant de faire face aux séparations des couples, de mieux accompagner les enfants et aussi leurs parents. Dans certains cas nous avons proposé des entretiens individuels et nous veillons avec neutralité et assiduité à maintenir la collaboration avec nos 2 partenaires.

Pendant l’été, nous avons souhaité partager des notions sur le mouvement avec tous les parents. Ils nous ont confié que la matinée « Youp’-là bouge » leur a apporté de nouvelles idées et modifié certaines pratiques, que les jus et fruits étaient délicieux, mais qu’ils auront besoin de beaucoup de temps pour manger des insectes.

L’année a commencé avec une belle énergie positive que nous avons l’intention de faire rayonner sur les petits que nous accueillons et sur leurs parents qui nous confient leurs trésors les plus chers.

The As’trame Foundation came to the daycare to equip staff with strategies for coping with separations and better supporting both children and their parents. In some cases, we offered individual interviews and worked diligently and neutrally to maintain collaboration with our two partners. During the summer, we wanted to share ideas about movement with all the parents. The parents told us that the “Youp-là bouge” morning gave them new ideas and changed some habits, that the juices and fruit were delicious, but that they’ll need a lot of time to eat insects. The year began with a wonderfully positive energy that we intend to radiate to the little ones we welcome and the parents who entrust us with their most precious treasures.

The Haut-Lac Nursery

Time flies and children are the best proof of this, as they acquire new skills and abilities every day.

At Les Marronniers, our spacious environment welcomes children into sections organized by age (from toddlers to pre-schoolers), further divided into four groups: Bees, Hedgehogs, Swallows, and Butterflies. The number of children in each group strictly follows cantonal guidelines.

Each group is led by an educator, assisted by a trainee or apprentice, following the Ronjat-Grammont principle (OPOL—One Educator, One Language), educators introduce children to either French or English, consistently speaking and encouraging responses in just one language. A rotation system ensures that every team member interacts with all groups and, most importantly, gets to know each child personally. Emotional security is essential for a child’s development in all areas.

Our Daily Mission

Every day, our primary goal is to meet the needs of each child. Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs reminds us that physiological, emotional, and security needs must come first, allowing children to progress to higher stages of development. Inspired by the French proverb, “A child who does not know how to play will become an adult who does not know how to think,” as well as by neuroscience research, our team thoughtfully prepares materials and activities to encourage learning through play. As Edouard Claparède suggested, a simple puddle of water becomes a tool for sensory, motor, psychological, emotional, imaginative, and social exploration. Through play, children discover science, refine their movements, find their place among friends, answer questions, express emotions, experiment, and—most importantly—learn while having fun.

Our Core Values

At Les Marronniers, children are always in MOTION. Every day, we take them outdoors, benefiting their health, regulating their biorhythms, and stimulating their imagination. And what about their selfesteem? It shines when passersby compliment their raincoats or adorable summer hats! INDEPENDENCE is another key value we instill. Children participate in making their beds, dressing and undressing, standing for diaper changes, and helping their friends. By being active and valued for their efforts, they develop essential skills while building confidence, resilience, and a sense of competence—valuable “soft skills” for their future. EXPRESSING EMOTIONS was a major focus this year. Our homemade snowmen were a fun way to help children recognize and name different emotions, teaching them that all feelings are valid. Even anger is welcomed—our special cushion allows children to release frustration safely while gradually learning impulse control. These tools will serve them well in their relationships, both now and in the future.

Complementary activities

Once a week, one group at a time sets out to explore the surrounding forests and enjoy the changing seasons. But in summer, the favorite destination is the paddling pool at the Corseaux swimming pool. Both offer wonderful experiences with nature for our little ones.

Cooking workshops are also held once a week. If there are birthdays, they will all be celebrated at the daycare. The children actively participate in making their birthday cakes, before enjoying them with their friends. The products are carefully monitored by their labels, and sugar is not included in the celebrations.

Our “Eco-Friendly Tuesday” is still going strong. Each daycare group sows, waters, grows fruit, and harvests it, provided it reaches maturity and hasn’t tempted passersby to help themselves. A big thank you to the neighbors who water our planters while the daycare is closed!

On Thursdays, yoga workshops teach the children so much about developing their coordination, balance and expression that both the children and teachers look forward to them!

And on Fridays, the Haut-Lac school music teacher brings melodies to his workshop. He also allows children to discover musical instruments and learn songs related to our monthly themes.

With unparalleled enthusiasm, neither the children nor the Marronniers’ team know a thing about boredom.

E1 Transport

The E1 children have been very engaged in learning about different modes of transport. They had the practical experience of walking down to the station to catch a train, learning how to buy a ticket from the machine and then travelling via the train to Blonay park. They were excited to speed along in the train, spotting landmarks including the Chateau du Blonay from the window. They also enjoyed the collective experience of all travelling on the school bus for the first time in order to return to school.

In the classroom they have immersed themselves in imaginative role-play, “travelling” by train or airplane to visit holiday destinations and even taking a rocket to go to the moon! These were ideal opportunities to use and extend the new vocabulary that they have acquired. The children have developed their gross motor skills whilst steering scooters and balance bikes to follow a route and to pay attention to traffic signals. They also developed skills in using remote controls to operate vehicles to move them around the playground.

These have been fun-packed and stimulating learning experiences linked to real world contexts.

E1 Transports

Les élèves de E1 ont été très impliqués dans l’apprentissage des différents modes de transport. Lors d’une sortie au parc de Blonay, ils ont marché jusqu’à la gare pour prendre un train et apprendre comment acheter un ticket à la machine. Ils étaient ravis de rouler à toute vitesse et d’apercevoir des monuments, dont le château de Blonay, depuis la fenêtre. Ils ont également apprécié l’expérience collective de voyager pour la première fois avec la classe en bus scolaire pour retourner à l’école.

En classe, ils se sont immergés dans des jeux de rôle imaginatifs : voyager en train ou en avion pour visiter des destinations de vacances et même prendre une fusée pour aller sur la Lune ! Ces occasions étaient idéales pour utiliser et enrichir le nouveau vocabulaire acquis. Les enfants ont développé leur motricité globale en pilotant des trottinettes et des draisiennes pour suivre un itinéraire et respecter les feux de circulation. Ils ont également développé des compétences en utilisant des télécommandes pour piloter des véhicules et se déplacer dans la cour de récréation. Ces diverses expériences furent ludiques et stimulantes, ancrées dans des contextes réels.

In winter, we headed to Les Pléiades for a morning of tobogganing and snowy walks among the fir trees. The children were able to observe the tracks left by animals and discover the signs of winter in nature. It was an opportunity to make the children aware of the changes that occur in the environment with the arrival of cold and snow.

Sauvabelin, where the children discovered the colours of autumn and observed farm animals. They learned to recognize the signs of autumn through fallen leaves, seasonal fruits and animals preparing for winter. The children also took part in a treasure hunt!

In the spring, the E2 students explored the flower-filled meadows around the school to better understand the important role that flowers and bees play in our ecosystem.

They also had the opportunity to visit a local beekeeper to discover the world of bees up close, learn about their way of life, and gain a deeper understanding of the essential role they play in pollination.

This approach enabled the children to experience each season to the full, understand its characteristics and connect with nature, while having fun and learning as the seasons changed.

E2 - Découverte des 4 saisons

Cette année, les enfants de E2 sont partis à la découverte des quatre saisons, chacune marquée par une nouvelle expérience en extérieur, permettant de comprendre et d'explorer la nature au fil de l'année.

En automne, nous avons commencé par une sortie au lac de Sauvabelin, où les enfants ont pu découvrir les couleurs de l'automne et observer les animaux de la ferme. Ils ont appris à reconnaître les signes de l'automne à travers les feuilles tombées, les fruits de saison et les animaux qui se préparent pour l'hiver. Les enfants ont participé à une chasse aux trésors !

L'hiver, direction les Pléiades pour une matinée de luge et de balade enneigée au milieu des sapins.

Les enfants ont pu observer les traces laissées par les animaux et découvrir les signes de l'hiver dans la nature. Ce fut une occasion de sensibiliser les enfants aux changements qui se produisent dans

l'environnement avec l'arrivée du froid et de la neige.

Au printemps, les élèves de E2 ont exploré les prairies fleuries autour de l'école afin de mieux comprendre l'importance du rôle des fleurs et des abeilles dans notre écosystème. Ils ont également eu l'opportunité de rendre visite à un apiculteur local afin de découvrir le monde des abeilles de plus près, comprendre leur mode de vie, et en apprendre davantage sur le rôle essentiel qu'elles jouent dans la pollinisation.

Cette approche a permis aux enfants de vivre pleinement chaque saison, de comprendre ses caractéristiques et de se connecter à la nature, tout en s’amusant et en apprenant au fil des saisons.

E3 Visit the zoo

In October 2024, the E3 students went to La Garenne Zoo for a guided tour on the theme of animal survival strategies in winter. Despite the rainy weather that day, we had a great time and learned a lot about our scientific objectives.

En octobre 2024, les élèves des classes de E3 se sont rendus au zoo de la Garenne pour suivre une visite guidée sur le thème des stratégies de survie des animaux en hiver. Malgré le temps pluvieux ce jour-là, nous avons passé un excellent moment et avons appris pleins de choses sur nos objectifs scientifiques.

As part of the Once Upon a Time theme, the E3 students took a storytelling walk in the Pléiades forest. Our guide told us many stories about squirrels, elves, birds and plants that live in the forest. At the end of the walk, the children had the opportunity to go sledding.

A l’occasion du thème sur les contes, les élèves des classes de E3 ont fait une balade contée dans la forêt des Pléiades. Notre guide, nous a raconté de nombreuses histoires sur des écureuils, des lutins, des oiseaux et des plantes qui vivent dans cette forêt. A la fin de cette promenade, les enfants ont eu la chance de faire de la luge.

Farm Animals Take Over the School!

On a sunny Wednesday morning in April, an air of spring and excitement swept through the Infant section! Teachers and children celebrated the season with a morning full of laughter, games… and some very funny farm animals.

On the agenda: lively sack races, bunny hops on space hoppers, dancing, arts and crafts… and even sensory games to explore the fun and the interesting world of the farm.

And as if that wasn’t enough, a magical surprise awaited the children — the Easter Bunny himself made a special appearance! He had hidden eggs all around the park, much to the delight of our little egg hunters. Each child went home with a bag of chocolatey treats to enjoy with (or without!) their family.

But beyond the fun and chocolate, this day was also filled with kindness: CHF455 was raised to support our House charities.

A huge bravo to everyone, big and small, for a joyful, generous… and chocolate-filled morning!

Les animaux de la ferme s'invitent

à l’école !

Ce mercredi d’avril, un vent de printemps et de bonne humeur a soufflé sur l’école enfantine ! Les enseignantes et les enfants ont célébré la saison des fleurs avec une matinée pleine de rires, de jeux… et d’animaux rigolos.

Au programme : des courses en sac endiablées, des sauts de lapins sur ballons, de la danse, du bricolage… sans oublier des jeux sensoriels pour découvrir le monde fascinant de la ferme.

Et comme une bonne surprise n’arrive jamais seule… le lapin de Pâques a fait une apparition magique ! Il avait semé des œufs dans le jardin de l’école, pour le plus grand bonheur des petits chasseurs d'œufs. Chaque enfant est reparti avec un sachet de chocolats à partager (ou pas !) à la maison.

Mais au-delà des jeux et des chocolats, c’est aussi un bel élan de solidarité qui a marqué cette journée : 455 CHF ont été récoltés pour soutenir notre action solidaire

Un grand bravo à toutes et tous, petits et grands, pour cette matinée pleine de joie, de partage… et de chocolats.

P1 visit the CHUV Hospital

P1 visited the CHUV hospital in Lausanne with our teddy bears to learn about what happens in a hospital! The children took their teddys to a doctor who examined them then took them through radiology, surgery and a pharmacy to help them get better!

Les enfants de P1 ont visité le CHUV et plus précisément “L'hôpital des Nounours” de Lausanne avec leur doudou pour découvrir ce qui se passe dans un hôpital ! Les enfants ont emmené leur doudou malade chez un médecin qui les a examiné puis les a emmené en radiologie, en chirurgie et dans une pharmacie pour les aider à aller mieux !

P2 visit the cathedral

On Tuesday 24 September, P2 visited the Lausanne Cathedral in Lausanne. The purpose of the trip was to help them learn more about Christianity, one of the five religions they were learning about as part of their ‘World of Difference’ theme. During the trip to the cathedral, they learned all about the history of the building and the objects inside it, even managing to walk up to the top of the tower!

Le mardi 24 septembre, les élèves de P2 ont visité la cathédrale de Lausanne. L'objectif de cette visite était de les aider à en apprendre davantage sur le christianisme, l'une des cinq religions étudiées dans le cadre du thème « Un monde différent ». Au cours de cette visite, ils ont découvert l'histoire du bâtiment et des objets qu'il abrite, et on même réussi à grimper jusqu'au sommet de la tour !

P2 Jungle Adventure!

As part of their theme "Under the Canopy", the P2 classes set off on an exciting adventure to the Papiliorama in Kerzers. The highlight was the Jungle Trek—a magical tropical dome that brought the rainforest of Belize to life! The children were thrilled to spot colourful rainbow toucans. It was like stepping into the pages of a rainforest storybook! They also explored the Papiliorama, where butterflies danced around them, and the Nocturama, where they discovered the secret world of night-time rainforest animals. What an unforgettable way to bring their learning to life!

Aventure dans la jungle pour les P2 !

Dans le cadre de leur thème « Sous la canopée », les classes de P2 sont parties pour une aventure passionnante au Papiliorama à Kerzers. Le moment fort de la visite ? Le Jungle Trek — un dôme tropical magique qui recrée fidèlement la forêt tropicale du Belize ! Les enfants étaient ravis d’apercevoir les toucans arc-en-ciel aux couleurs éclatantes. On aurait dit qu’ils avaient plongé dans un livre d’histoires de la jungle ! Ils ont également exploré le Papiliorama, où les papillons virevoltaient tout autour d’eux, ainsi que le Nocturama, où ils ont découvert le monde secret des animaux nocturnes de la forêt tropicale. Quelle façon inoubliable de donner vie à leurs apprentissages !

P3 Visit La Biquette Farm in Glion

Our P3 class enjoyed a wonderful field trip to La Biquette, a small local farm in Glion that’s only two years old. Under the warm spring sunshine, the students had a hands-on learning experience about animal welfare.

They were thrilled to milk goats, watch them roam freely in the grassy fields, and discover how these animals are cared for in a sustainable and respectful way. The children learned about the importance of feeding farm animals with locally sourced hay and using renewable energy—La Biquette is partially powered by solar panels!

As part of the experience, the students also learned how to make goat’s cheese and had the chance to taste some delicious farm products. The day ended peacefully with a 30-minute mindful walk through the scenic Gorges du Chauderon, rounding off a fun, educational, and memorable outing.

P3 Visite de la ferme La Biquette à Glion

Notre classe de P3 a bénéficié d'une merveilleuse visite à La Biquette, une petite ferme locale de Glion qui n'a que deux ans d'existence. Sous le soleil chaud du printemps, les élèves ont eu une expérience d'apprentissage pratique sur le bien-être des animaux.

Ils ont été ravis de traire des chèvres, de les regarder se promener librement dans les champs verdoyants et de découvrir comment ces animaux sont soignés de manière durable et respectueuse. Les enfants ont appris l'importance de nourrir les animaux de la ferme avec du foin d'origine locale et d'utiliser des énergies renouvelables - la Biquette est partiellement alimentée par des panneaux solaires !

Dans le cadre de cette expérience, les élèves ont également appris à fabriquer du fromage de chèvre et ont eu la chance de déguster de délicieux produits de la ferme. La journée s'est terminée paisiblement par une promenade de 30 minutes dans les Gorges du Chauderon, pour conclure une sortie amusante, éducative et mémorable.

P4 - EXPLORiT

P4 took a trip to EXPLORiT, where they learned about space through a guided tour and play. The students journeyed to the past, learning about the story behind NASA and spaceships, and caught a glimpse of the future, viewing models of solar powered travel. They even stood next to the moon and sun, and stepped on Mars. As an extra treat, the students had a chance to explore KinderCity where they enjoyed learning about our world here on Earth, from the human body to food production and music! They were even hired to build a house as a team!

Les P4 ont fait un voyage à EXPLORiT où ils ont exploré l'espace grâce à une visite guidée et à un jeu. Les élèves ont voyagé dans le passé, apprenant l'histoire derrière la NASA et les vaisseaux spatiaux, et ont eu un aperçu de l'avenir, en regardant des modèles de voyage à énergie solaire. Ils se sont même tenus à côté de la lune, du soleil et ont marché sur Mars. Comme surprise supplémentaire, les élèves ont eu l'occasion d'explorer KinderCity, où ils ont pris plaisir à en apprendre davantage sur notre monde ici sur Terre, du corps humain à la production alimentaire et à la musique! Ils ont même été engagés pour construire une maison en équipe!

Roman Museum

P4 visited the Roman Museum in LausanneVidy for our Roman theme. In the workshop, the children discovered the Roman secrets of construction and were acquainted with their ingenious tools. They built an arch without glue or cement, discovered the different materials used and also experimented with Roman measuring and lifting tools. They were immersed in old Roman Lousanna, walked through the floor plan of the city and saw the remains of the buildings that made up our neighbouring town.

Musée Romain

Les élèves de P4 ont visité le Musée Romain de Lausanne-Vidy, dans le cadre de notre thème sur les Romains. Lors de l’atelier, les enfants ont découvert les secrets de construction des Romains et se sont familiarisés avec leurs outils ingénieux. Ils ont construit une arche sans colle ni ciment, découvert les différents matériaux utilisés, expérimenté les outils de mesure et de levage romains. Ils ont aussi été plongés dans l’ancienne ville romaine de Lousanna, ont parcouru le plan de la ville et ont admiré les vestiges des bâtiments qui composaient notre ville voisine.

During our first Theme Unit, Cosmopolitan, P5 explored the cities of New York and Sydney, focusing on their histories, cultures, and the diverse communities shaped by immigration.

As part of our studies, we visited the Musée Opale in Valais, which houses one of the most extensive collections of Aboriginal historical artefacts outside of Australia. While there, students engaged in an immersive theatre experience that depicted the plight of Aboriginal people under 20th-century European settlement. They also created their own provocative artworks carrying powerful messages of peace, equality, and anti-racism. The students gained valuable insight and responded to the stark and challenging material with maturity and respect.

P5 Team

Au cours de notre premier thème, Cosmopolite, les élèves de P5 ont exploré les villes de New York et de Sydney, en se concentrant sur leur histoire, leur culture et les diverses communautés façonnées par l'immigration.

Dans le cadre de nos études, nous avons visité le Musée Opale en Valais, qui abrite l'une des plus vastes collections d'objets historiques aborigènes en dehors de l'Australie. Les élèves ont participé à une expérience théâtrale immersive décrivant la situation difficile des Aborigènes dans le cadre de la colonisation européenne au XXe siècle. Ils ont également créé leurs propres œuvres d'art provocantes, porteuses de puissants messages de paix, d'égalité et de lutte contre le racisme. Les élèves ont acquis des connaissances précieuses et ont réagi avec maturité et respect sur ce sujet très lourd et difficile.

Primary Science Fair

Last November saw our inaugural primary science fair take off with aplomb. Pupils from E3 to P5 showcased their interest in a science, technology or nature topic of their choice. With the parameters set to use a 50cm3 space to present a small-scale investigation, model or information board, our community rose to the challenge with some outstanding displays.

Support for this event was simply beyond expectations with 238 pupils producing informative displays and impressing with their research and methodological approaches. All their efforts culminated in a feast of colourful, investigative prowess and it’s certain that parents and staff alike learned a thing or two from our pupils young and inquisitive minds. Foire aux Sciences en Primaire

En novembre dernier, notre toute première foire scientifique du Primaire a été lancée avec brio. Les élèves de E3 à P5 ont montré leur intérêt pour un sujet de leur choix dans le domaine des sciences, de la technologie ou de la nature. En utilisant un volume de 50 cm3 pour présenter une expérience à petite échelle, un modèle ou un panneau d'information, notre communauté a relevé le défi avec des présentations exceptionnelles.

Le soutien apporté à cet événement a dépassé toutes les attentes : 238 élèves ont produit des présentations informatives et ont impressionné par leurs recherches et leurs approches méthodologiques. Tous leurs efforts ont abouti à une véritable fête haute en couleur et relevé l’esprit d’investigation de nos élèves. Digital Leaders

Once again, there was a high number of Digital Leader applications from our P3, P4, and P5 students, all showing a strong enthusiasm for technology. With so many passionate applicants, selecting this year’s team was no easy task!

The successful candidates who make up our 2024/2025 Digital Leader team are as follows:

P3 – For the first half of the year: Amelia, Charlotte, Emmi, Miles, Rafael and Yohann and for the second half of the year: Alina, Avril, Henri, Jesse, Pablo and Sofia.

P4 – Ellie, Jules, Madeleine, Mario, Olimpia and Sofia.

P5 – Arthur, Erin Rachel, Helena, Moriz and Sienna.

The Digital Leaders meet weekly to collaborate, explore new technologies and enhance their digital skills. They’ve had a productive year: exploring different apps, learning to program with micro:bit, and taking part in Safer Internet Week. One of their favourite moments was researching coding activities and sharing them with their classmates during Hour of Code week in December.

Une fois de plus, les élèves des classes P3, P4 et P5 ont présenté un grand nombre de candidatures pour le poste de « Digital Leader », qui témoignent toutes d’un grand enthousiasme pour la technologie. Avec autant de candidats passionnés, la sélection de l’équipe de cette année n’a pas été une tâche facile !

Les candidats retenus pour former notre équipe de leaders numériques 2024/2025 sont les suivants :

Les Digital Leaders se réunissent chaque semaine pour collaborer, explorer de nouvelles technologies et améliorer leurs compétences numériques. Ils ont eu une année productive : ils ont exploré différentes applications, appris à programmer avec micro:bit et participé à la Semaine pour un Internet plus sûr. L’un de leurs moments préférés a été la recherche d’activités de codage et leur partage avec leurs camarades de classe pendant la semaine de l’Heure du Code en décembre.

Eco Leaders

For the academic year 2024/25, the Eco-Leaders were Léa P1B1, Lara P2B1, Lily P2B1, Kiaan P2B1, Emma P3A and Viola P5B1. They were helped by previous Eco-Leaders; Elynne P3B1 and Palina P4B1 who assisted them during the year.

The Eco-Leaders have had a busy year exploring everything related to water! As part of our journey towards Eco-Schools accreditation, water was chosen as our theme topic. In the first part of the year, the Eco-Leaders investigated how water is used across the school. They measured the water output of each tap and toured the kitchen to understand how water is used there.

They then focused their efforts on organising a special event for UN Children’s Day. On Wednesday, 20 November, the entire primary school took part in a day dedicated to water and the theme “Every Child’s Right to Clean Water.” Pupils were invited to wear blue and bring a 500ml bottle to school. Each year group engaged in different activities using their bottle, such as learning how to filter dirty water, identifying local water sources, understanding how plastic is produced and misused, and discovering how 500ml of water can be used in daily tasks.

To mark the end of the event, a group of children created a beautiful sculpture made from the collected bottles, symbolising the project’s message. The day gave pupils an opportunity to reflect on the vital role water plays in our daily lives.

Later in the year, the Eco-Leaders organised another event—this time outdoors in the sunshine—to further explore water and its many uses and properties. The primary school students investigated how water can be transported, measured, and used to float objects. They also discovered water’s relaxing qualities through a mindfulness activity and a fun game. Importantly, we ensured minimal water waste by conducting the activities on the grass, where any excess water helped to irrigate it. Well done to all the Eco-Leaders this year for their hard work!

Pour l'année académique 2024/25, les éco-leaders étaient Léa P1B1, Lara P2B1, Lily P2B1, Kiaan P2B1, Emma P3A et Viola P5B1. Elles ont été aidées par les précédentes éco-leaders, Elynne P3B1 et Palina P4B1, qui les ont assistées au cours de l'année.Les éco-leaders ont eu une année bien remplie, explorant tout ce qui a trait à l'eau ! Dans le cadre de notre parcours vers l'accréditation Eco-Schools, l'eau a été choisie comme thème.

Au cours de la première partie de l'année, les éco-leaders ont étudié la manière dont l'eau est utilisée dans l'école. Ils ont mesuré le débit d'eau de chaque robinet et ont visité la cuisine pour comprendre comment l'eau y est utilisée.

Ils ont ensuite concentré leurs efforts sur l'organisation d'un événement spécial pour la Journée des Nations unies pour l'enfance. Le mercredi 20 novembre, l'ensemble de l'école primaire a participé à une journée consacrée à l'eau et au thème « Le droit de chaque enfant à l'eau potable ». Les élèves ont été invités à porter du bleu et à apporter une bouteille de 500 ml à l'école. Chaque groupe d'âge a participé à différentes activités avec sa bouteille, comme apprendre à filtrer l'eau sale, identifier les sources d'eau locales, comprendre comment le plastique est produit et utilisé à mauvais escient, et découvrir comment 500ml d'eau peuvent être utilisés dans les tâches quotidiennes.

Pour marquer la fin de l'événement, un groupe d'enfants a créé une magnifique sculpture à partir des bouteilles collectées, symbolisant le message du projet. Cette journée a permis aux élèves de réfléchir au rôle vital que joue l'eau dans notre vie quotidienne.

Plus tard dans l'année, les éco-leaders ont organisé un autre événement, cette fois-ci en plein air et sous le soleil, afin de poursuivre l'exploration de l'eau et de ses nombreuses utilisations et propriétés. Les élèves de l'école primaire ont étudié comment l'eau peut être transportée, mesurée et utilisée pour faire flotter des objets. Ils ont également découvert les qualités relaxantes de l'eau grâce à une activité de pleine conscience et à un jeu amusant. Il est important de noter que nous avons minimisé le gaspillage d'eau en menant les activités sur l'herbe, où l'eau excédentaire a permis d'irriguer la pelouse. Bravo à tous les éco-leaders de cette année pour leur travail acharné !

P3 Essential Oils

This year, we introduced a new pilot project in P3B, incorporating the use of seven specially diluted essential oil blends designed for children to help them navigate their emotions and well-being. These oils have been used in some mindfulness sessions, allowing students to connect with their feelings in a safe and guided way. We ensured the oils were used sensibly and effectively. As a result, the children have become adept at identifying and naming their emotions, even locating where these feelings are experienced in their bodies.

Feedback from parents and students has been overwhelmingly positive, with many noting a deeper sense of emotional awareness and calmness.

Huiles Essentielles en P3

Cette année, nous avons introduit un nouveau projet pilote en P3B, incluant l’utilisation de sept mélanges d’huiles essentielles spécialement diluées et conçues pour les enfants afin de les aider à gérer leurs émotions et leur bien-être. Ces huiles ont été utilisées dans certaines séances de pleine conscience, permettant aux élèves d’entrer en contact avec leurs ressentis dans la bienveillance et de manière guidée. Nous avons veillé à ce que les huiles soient utilisées de manière raisonnable et efficace. Par conséquent, les enfants sont devenus capables d’identifier et de nommer leurs émotions, et même de localiser où ces sentiments étaient ressentis dans leur corps.

Les réactions des parents et des élèves ont été extrêmement positives, beaucoup d’entre eux ayant noté un sentiment plus profond de conscience émotionnelle et de calme.

This year, our P5 Language Ambassadors have supported our HautLac community in many ways including providing support to new families, helping students who share the same linguistic background, reading with younger students and putting their translation skills to good use. These students have had the opportunity to work with our Admissions Department, class teachers and with Sabine in the library. Developing valuable skills in communication, organisation, and teamwork, their enthusiasm in these roles has shown what it means to truly be a global citizen, a key part of our Mission Statement. A huge thank you to our P5 Language Ambassadors: Tamara, Erin Rachel, Moriz, Ella, Zuzanna, Adelyn, Darlene and Martin.

Being able to have helped at the Open Day was a really big pleasure for me. It was nice to show parents around the school. I loved explaining everything that makes Haut-Lac such a great place. As a Language Ambassador, I love meeting new students and making them feel welcome.

Language Ambassador Role: Reading with the Infants

As a Language Ambassador one of the things I did this year was reading with the infants. My mom and I read stories in Bulgarian to other Bulgarian speakers. I really enjoyed seeing how excited they were to read with us. The children could express themselves more easily in their own language. Reading in Bulgarian also helps to encourage multilingualism.

En tant qu'ambassadrice des langues, l'une des choses que j'ai faites cette année a été de lire avec les enfants en bas âge. Ma mère et moi avons lu des histoires en bulgare à d'autres bulgares. J'ai vraiment apprécié de voir à quel point ils étaient enthousiastes à l'idée de lire avec nous. Les enfants pouvaient s'exprimer plus facilement dans leur propre langue. La lecture en bulgare contribue également à encourager le multilinguisme.

Visit to the Immigration Museum

This year in MYP1, we did an interdisciplinary project which combined two subjects, art and English, into one big one.

As part of the project, we took part in a trip to understand how different people immigrate to Switzerland.

We went to an immigration museum in Lausanne. It’s one of the smallest museums in Switzerland. People go there to get some help after they emmigrate from their countries.

Even though it was a small museum we learned a lot of things. We met a lady that came from Afghanistan called Manila. It has been two years since she moved. She was also a very good artist. We also met the director called Ernesto, he was also a great artist.

It was very nice to hear the stories that they told about different people. We saw a suitcase with a lot of important stuff from Afghanistan such as a gold necklace, books, Afghan money and a teapot.

We also had group discussions with Jennifer and Christine, which linked to the class novel we read –The Breadwinner!

My favourite part of the visit was listening to the stories that Ernesto told us. We learned that some people have to leave their country just to be safe. We also learned that we are all brothers and sisters because we live on the same earth and that we have to respect each other.

Overall I really enjoyed this trip and I think the MYP1 students would agree with me!

Musée de l’Immigration

Cette année, en PEI1 nous avons réalisé un projet interdisciplinaire. Cela consiste à combiner deux matières pour en faire un seul gros projet. Nous avons combiné art et anglais. Le but de cette visite consiste à apprendre comment les personnes venant d’Afghanistan migrent en Suisse.

Nous sommes allés au Musée de l’Immigration à Lausanne. C’est l’un des plus petits musées de Suisse. Des personnes viennent à cet endroit pour avoir de l’aide après avoir immigré en Suisse. Même si c’est un musée très petit, nous avons appris plein de choses. Nous avons rencontré une dame qui venait d’Afghanistan et s’appelait Manila et habite en Suisse depuis 2 ans. C’était une artiste très douée qui fait de magnifiques dessins. Nous avons aussi rencontrés Ernesto le directeur du centre d’aide. C’était intéressant d’écouter leurs histoires sur leurs aventures. Nous avons vu des objets importants venant d’Afghanistan que Manila avait apporté avec elle. Manila avait pris des bijoux symboliques en or et ses livres préférés, ainsi que de l’argent et une théière.

Avec Jennifer et Christine, nous avons parlé des connections de l’immigration avec notre livre « The Breadwinner » écrit par Deborah Ellis.

Durant cette visite, nous avons appris comment c’est difficile et dangereux d’immigrer de son pays et qu’il faut aider ces gens qui sont en difficulté.

MYP2 Visit the Balloon Museum Château-d’Œx

This year, our interdisciplinary project was between the subjects English and humanities. In humanities, we learned about explorers and exploring, whilst in English, we learned about persuasive writing. For our final task at the end of our project, we had to write a persuasive essay on an influential explorer.

We had a choice of 3 and we had to compare and contrast their achievements. The most interesting part of the project was the trip to the Espace Ballon museum in Château-d’Œx. Since we learned about the Swiss explorer, Bertrand Piccard, who was the first person ever to do a non-stop world tour in a hot air balloon, and who contributed a lot to the history of hot air balloons, it was the perfect trip to go on! We participated in a short tour and then explored the museum and the interactive activities with our friends.

We ended with a 4D simulator that gives you the experience of actually being on a hot air balloon and flying through the air in Switzerland, which was really cool!

PEI2 Visite du musée Espace Ballon de Château-d’Œx

Cette année, notre projet interdisciplinaire concernait l’anglais et les sciences humaines. En sciences humaines, nous avons appris à connaître les explorateurs et à explorer, tandis qu’en anglais, nous avons appris à rédiger des textes persuasifs. Pour notre tâche finale, à la fin de notre projet, nous devions écrire un essai persuasif sur un explorateur influent.

Nous avions le choix entre trois explorateurs et devions comparer leurs réalisations. La partie la plus intéressante du projet a été la visite du musée Espace Ballon à Château-d’Œx. Comme nous avons appris l’existence de l’explorateur suisse Bertrand Piccard, qui a été la première personne à faire un tour du monde sans escale en montgolfière et qui a beaucoup contribué à l’histoire des montgolfières, c’était le voyage parfait à faire ! Nous avons participé à une courte visite, puis nous avons exploré le musée et les activités interactives avec nos amis.

Nous avons terminé par un simulateur 4D qui vous donne l’expérience d’être réellement à bord d’une montgolfière et de voler dans les airs en Suisse, ce qui était vraiment cool !

The festival included :

Theatre - Captivating performances where our students explored emotion, movement and stagecraft.

Film - Short films that showcased their imagination and storytelling skills.

Music - Compositions and performances that resonated with passion and creativity.

Visual Arts - Inspired and thoughtful works, culminating in a DP2 exhibition where each student expressed who they are through Art.

A huge well done to all our young talent for this unique artistic adventure!

Hello everyone, I’m delighted to let you know that I have had the amazing opportunity to get some of my poems published in an anthology, along with some other amazing writers. This, for me, is like a dream come true. I have been very passionate about writing poetry since the 2021, COVID lockdown, when I realised I needed something else to do besides reading.

I started off by writing some basic poems and I have attempted to work my way up to creating more deep and meaningful poetry over the years. And now, it seems that my hardwork has paid off through the support of my family, friends, and of course our school community which has helped to open many new doors for me, especially through the CAS programme.

The creativity element of CAS was the perfect opportunity to immerse myself fully into the world of poetry and a way for me to grow as a writer. Now, as my poetry has been put out into the world, I am hoping to reach new milestones in the future and perhaps create a writing career for myself, if I am one day given the opportunity to do so.

I would like to thank the school for giving me recognition for this accomplishment and for lighting the way to a new journey ahead of me.

Bonjour à tous, je suis ravie de vous annoncer que j'ai eu la chance extraordinaire de voir certains de mes poèmes publiés dans une anthologie, avec d'autres écrivains extraordinaires. Pour moi, c'est comme un rêve devenu réalité. Je suis passionnée par l'écriture de poèmes depuis 2021, date à laquelle j'ai réalisé que j'avais besoin de faire autre chose que de lire.

J'ai commencé par écrire quelques poèmes de base et j'ai tenté de progresser vers la création de poèmes plus profonds et plus significatifs au fil des ans. Aujourd'hui, il semble que mon travail acharné ait porté ses fruits grâce au soutien de ma famille, de mes amis et, bien sûr, de notre communauté scolaire qui a contribué à m'ouvrir de nombreuses portes, en particulier grâce au programme CAS.

La partie Créativité du CAS a été l'occasion parfaite de me plonger dans le monde de la poésie et de me développer en tant qu’écrivaine. Maintenant que mes poèmes ont été publiés, j'espère franchir de nouvelles étapes dans l'avenir et peut-être me lancer dans une carrière d'écrivain, si un jour l'occasion m'en est donnée.

Je tiens à remercier l'école de m'avoir récompensée pour cet accomplissement et d'avoir ouvert la voie vers de nouvelles perspectives.

Secondary Show

The Haut Lac secondary school presented Misunderstood for their annual December show this year.

Two television anchors, Cruella and Joker, are at the forefront of covering the trial of the decade, where infamous villains stand accused of their heinous crimes. The likes of the Red Queen from Wonderland, Mr. Hyde (and Dr. Jekyll), the Evil Queen from Snow White, and Dracula are all facing their long-awaited judgement day. However, amidst the courtroom drama, shocking revelations emerge as these villains disclose the circumstances that led them down the path of darkness. Could they be misunderstood?

The show took life on stage with the help of 100 and plus students involved in dancing, acting, singing, playing instruments or behind the scene with the Tech team. This year again, the Performing Arts team was absolutely impressed with

everyone’s dedication, work and talent in putting together this great show in one term!

This could not have been possible without the talent and dedication of Sam Galtos our fabulous dance choreographer and costume queen, Paul Porter, the incredible musical director who brought so many talented musicians together and Tobias Mc Shane, script writer extraordinaire... The show revolved around 4 acted trials and flashbacks, and featured 6 amazing dances, as well as numerous choir, soloists and band numbers. The cast only had 6 weeks to put all this together, but they gave it their all!

Cette année, l’école secondaire de Haut Lac a présenté Misunderstood dans le cadre de son spectacle annuel de décembre.

Deux présentateurs de télévision, Cruella et Joker, sont au premier plan pour couvrir le procès de la décennie, où d’infâmes méchants sont accusés de crimes odieux. La Reine rouge du Pays des merveilles, M. Hyde (et le Dr Jekyll), la Méchante Reine de Blanche-Neige et Dracula sont tous confrontés à leur jugement tant attendu. Cependant, au milieu du drame de la salle d’audience, des révélations choquantes émergent lorsque ces méchants dévoilent les circonstances qui les ont conduits sur le chemin de la noirceur. Pourraientils être incompris ?

Le spectacle a pris vie sur scène avec l’aide d’une centaine d’élèves qui ont dansé, joué, chanté, joué d’un instrument ou travaillé en coulisses avec l’équipe technique. Cette année encore, l’équipe des arts du spectacle

a été absolument impressionnée par le dévouement, le travail et le talent de chacun pour monter ce grand spectacle en un trimestre !

Cela n’aurait pas été possible sans le talent et le dévouement de Sam Galtos, notre fabuleuse chorégraphe de danse et reine des costumes, de Paul Porter, l’incroyable directeur musical qui a réuni tant de musiciens talentueux, et de Tobias Mc Shane, scénariste extraordinaire... Le spectacle s’articule autour de 4 procès joués et de flashbacks, et comprend 6 danses étonnantes, ainsi que de nombreux numéros de chorale, de solistes et d’orchestre. Les acteurs n’ont eu que six semaines pour mettre tout cela sur pied, mais ils ont tout donné !

Nous avons déjà hâte de voir le spectacle de l’année prochaine avec tout le monde !

Battle of the Bands

The Battle of the Bands took place on Thursday 27 February featuring twelve bands from different International Schools. Our MYP5 band (also known as ‘The One Percent’), performed songs by Journey and Green Day. The DP2 band (also known as ‘8/31’), performed songs by Muse and The Cranberries. We didn’t win but we came so very close. It was a fabulous evening of entertainment and our young musicians made new friends. We will go back next year with even more bands !

La Battle of the Bands a eu lieu le jeudi 27 février, réunissant douze groupes issus de différentes écoles internationales.

Notre groupe du PEI5 (également connu sous le nom de The One Percent) a interprété des chansons de Journey et Green Day. Le groupe de IB2 (8/31) a joué des morceaux de Muse et The Cranberries. Nous n’avons pas gagné, mais nous étions tout près de la victoire !

Ce fut une soirée de divertissement fantastique, où nos jeunes musiciens ont également noué de nouvelles amitiés. L’année prochaine, nous reviendrons avec encore plus de groupes !

Un grand merci à Paul Porter et Barend Schweigman, qui ont accompagné les élèves et leur ont permis de vivre cette formidable expérience musicale !

Remembrance Day Jour du Souvenir

As has become tradition, on 11 November secondary and primary students attended the Remembrance ceremony at St Martin in Vevey. We remembered those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our peace and freedom.

The students at our school are the next generation, and it’s up to them to carry forward the lessons of peace, kindness and understanding.

Visit from Kyriakos Kalaitzidis

On 27 March, we had the pleasure of hosting a musical workshop led by Kyriakos Kalaitzidis, a world-renowned musician specializing in traditional Mediterranean music. He conducted a workshop for our students titled "A Voyage through Greek & Eastern Mediterranean Musical Traditions," a program he has successfully presented at various schools and universities around the world.

The workshop explored the evolution of Greek musical civilization from antiquity and the Byzantine era to the present day, highlighting its connections with Mediterranean musical traditions. It included a historical overview, an introduction to the theoretical system, which differs from the European model, and a discussion of traditional instruments, Byzantine notation, and various musical genres and repertoires. The session was enriched with a presentation, video examples, and a live oud performance.

Le 27 mars, nous avons eu le plaisir d'accueillir un atelier musical dirigé par Kyriakos Kalaitzidis, musicien de renommée mondiale spécialisé dans la musique méditerranéenne traditionnelle. Il a dirigé pour nos étudiants un atelier intitulé « Un voyage à travers les traditions musicales de la Grèce et de la Méditerranée orientale », un programme qu'il a présenté avec succès dans plusieurs écoles et universités à travers le monde.

L'atelier a exploré l'évolution de la civilisation musicale grecque depuis l'Antiquité et l'ère byzantine jusqu'à nos jours, en soulignant ses liens avec les traditions musicales méditerranéennes. Il comprenait un aperçu historique, une introduction au système théorique, qui diffère du modèle européen, et une discussion sur les instruments traditionnels, la notation byzantine et les différents genres et répertoires musicaux. La session a été agrémentée d'une présentation, d'exemples vidéo et d'un concert de oud en direct.

The MYP5 Personal Project exhibition showcased our students’ creativity, dedication, and hard work. The range of projects reflected their diversity as individuals. We celebrated their achievements with parents and MYP4 students, who will hopefully be inspired as they begin their own journey.

On 8 April, we celebrated the accomplishments of our eldest students, IB2, by hosting a heartfelt farewell breakfast to welcome them into our alumni community.

As they depart from the familiar surroundings of Haut-Lac and embark on new adventures, we extend our warmest wishes for success and happiness in their future endeavors.

Creativity

Students are exploring their artistic sides through various creative pursuits. Many are honing their musical talents with piano lessons and singing classes. Others are channeling their creativity into photography, short story writing, and even editing ski videos. The school’s Yearbook team is working diligently to capture memories, while the Warhammer club offers a unique outlet for strategic thinking and miniature painting. Language enthusiasts are taking their skills to the next level by creating a German language book and writing movie and film reviews. Some students are also exploring the culinary arts through cooking classes. Many IB 1 Students are also participating in Model United Nations (MUN), developing their diplomatic and public speaking skills while addressing global issues.

Les élèves explorent leur côté artistique à travers diverses activités créatives. Beaucoup perfectionnent leurs talents musicaux en prenant des cours de piano et de chant. D’autres canalisent leur créativité dans la photographie, l’écriture de nouvelles et même le montage de vidéos de ski. L’équipe du Yearbook de l’école travaille avec assiduité pour immortaliser les souvenirs, tandis que le club Warhammer offre un exutoire unique pour la réflexion stratégique et la peinture de figurines. Les passionnés de langues passent à la vitesse supérieure en créant un livre en allemand et en rédigeant des critiques de films et d’œuvres cinématographiques. Activity

Physical well-being is a key focus for our IB students. They’re participating in a diverse range of sports including swimming, trail running, skiing, American football, badminton, tennis, table tennis, volleyball, and basketball. Many are also engaged in fitness training and yoga to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Several students have taken their passion for sports a step further by becoming swimming judges, assistant coaches for football and volleyball teams, and even helping with sports lessons for younger students.

Le bien-être physique est une priorité pour nos élèves de l’IB. Ils pratiquent un large éventail de sports, notamment la natation, la course à pied, le ski, le football américain, le badminton, le tennis, le tennis de table, le volley-ball et le basket-ball. Nombre d’entre eux s’adonnent également à l’entraînement physique et au yoga pour maintenir un mode de vie sain. Our students are making significant contributions to the school community through various service activities. Many are serving as class assistants in subjects like Chemistry, Biology, English, Maths, Drama, and languages (Spanish, German, and French). This not only helps younger students but also reinforces the IB students' own understanding of these subjects. The Environmental Committee is working tirelessly to promote sustainability within the school.

IB 1 CAS projects

Nos élèves apportent une contribution significative à la communauté scolaire par le biais de diverses activités de service. Nombre d’entre eux sont assistants de classe dans des matières telles que la chimie, la biologie, l’anglais, les mathématiques, le théâtre et les langues (espagnol, allemand et français). Cela permet non seulement d’aider les élèves plus jeunes, mais aussi de renforcer la compréhension de ces matières par les élèves de l’IB. Le comité environnemental travaille sans relâche pour promouvoir le développement durable au sein de l’école.

Term 1, students organized a Doudou Drive for the Charles Gonin hospital in Lausanne, collecting comforting toys for children in hospitals. Another group created a documentary for the school show. Term 2, will see the production of a promotional video for skiing in Switzerland and a Caritas Clothes Drive.

Term 3, students are planning for the HautLac Triathlon as well as organizing a football tournament. Two year-long projects have also been approved; writing a song and producing a music video, and running the Haut-Lac Radio. Looking ahead to IB2, students are already planning for an HL MUN conference in term 1 of next year. These projects demonstrate our students' commitment to personal growth, creativity and service, embodying the true spirit of the IB CAS programme.

Premier trimestre, les élèves ont organisé un “Doudou Drive” pour l’hôpital Charles Gonin à Lausanne, afin de collecter des jouets réconfortants pour les enfants hospitalisés. Un autre groupe a réalisé un documentaire pour le spectacle de l’école.

Deuxième trimestre, est consacré à la production d’une vidéo promotionnelle pour le ski en Suisse et une collecte de vêtements pour Caritas.

Troisième trimestre, les élèves préparent le Triathlon de Haut-Lac et organisent un tournoi de football. Deux projets d’une année ont également été approuvés : l’écriture d’une chanson et la production d’un clip vidéo, ainsi que la gestion de la radio de Haut-Lac. En ce qui concerne l’IB2, les élèves planifient déjà une conférence HL MUN au premier trimestre de l’année prochaine. Ces projets démontrent l’engagement de nos élèves en faveur du développement personnel, de la créativité et du service, incarnant ainsi le véritable esprit du programme CAS de l’IB.

MYP4 German Class trip to Bern

On 4 December my MYP 4 German class, Ken and I set off early in the morning to go to Berne. We had a quick stop at the Xmas market before arriving at our destination - the Albert Einstein exhibition in the history museum of Berne. Our guide, a physicist from the Ticino, was excellent and gave us an amazing tour through the museum. Even though we had read a simplified version of Albert Einstein’s life in class beforehand we all learned many new facts about his work and life.

All in all we had a great day - a big thank you to Ken for coming along!

Le 4 décembre, Ken, ma classe d’allemand du PEI4 et moi-même sommes partis tôt le matin pour nous rendre à Berne. Nous nous sommes rapidement arrêtés au marché de Noël avant d’arriver à notre destination : l’exposition Albert Einstein au musée d’histoire de Berne. Notre guide, un physicien du Tessin, était excellent et nous a fait faire une visite étonnante du musée. Même si nous avions lu une version simplifiée de la vie d’Albert Einstein en classe, nous avons tous appris beaucoup de choses nouvelles sur son travail et sa vie.

Dans l’ensemble, nous avons passé une excellente journée - un grand merci à Ken d’être venu !

MUN Haut-Lac

At the Basel November conference, several delegates shone in their respective committees. In the IB delegation, Santiago received an honourable mention in the Human Rights Council while Noya was honoured as the best delegate in the Environmental Committee. Additionally, Tabitha and Panos earned honourable mentions for their compelling opening speeches in the Youth and Health Committee and Security Council respectively. The outstanding performances across the board celebrated the spirit of academic diplomacy and teamwork.

MUN Aiglon

During the HL MUN conference on October 5th, organised and run by our DP2 students, Noya Weiss emerged as the best delegate in her very first conference. Her confident leadership and articulate arguments left a lasting impression on all participants.

MUN Basel

At the Aiglon conference in January 2025, Harris stood out as the best delegate, exemplifying strong leadership and eloquence. Panos also garnered an honourable mention for his contributions, adding to the event’s spirit of excellence. The conference was a true celebration of emerging talent and dedication to the art of diplomacy.

MUN Leysin

The Leysin November conference saw exceptional leadership and teamwork among its delegates. In the Security Council, Panos earned the title of best delegate, while Yoni received an honourable mention for his outstanding input. Additionally, Jigyansa and Giovanni were applauded for chairing sessions alongside peers from Leysin American School during what turned out to be their final conference.

MUN Brillantmont

In the Brillantmont conference held in March 2025, Yoni was awarded best delegate in the Security Council, a testament to his eloquence and strategic acumen. Panos and Siane received honourable mentions for their noteworthy contributions, with Panos being recognized for his overall performance and Siane for her role in the General Assembly. Additionally, Iasonas earned an honourable mention in the Human Rights Committee in just his second conference, a memorable achievement. Karina had the honour of chairing her first external conference, marking a significant milestone in her MUN journey.

MUN ISL

At the ISL conference in September, Giovanni demonstrated remarkable skill in the Security Council, earning an honourable mention for his thoughtful contributions. His strategic insights and dedication truly set a high standard for diplomatic excellence.

International Award

What a year it has been! Things finished up last June with a stunning hike along part of the Tour du Mont Blanc. The Silver and Gold groups wrapped up the year on a literal high, surrounded by mountains, fresh air and slightly sore feet.

The Gold group, having bonded well over their time together, set out in late August on their Qualifying Adventurous Journey, tackling the challenge with resilience, teamwork, and good humour.

Soon after, in September, new participants joined the programme while others continued their journey at higher levels. From that point on, it was full steam ahead with team building, skill sessions, cooking experiments and games. Somewhere along the way, breakfast burritos became a surprise sensation.

By May, all that preparation paid off during adventurous journey trips to Les Paccots, Creux du Van and the stunning Gorges de l’Areuse. Everyone put their skills to the test, hiking, navigating, camping and working together in the great outdoors.

Many participants achieved their Bronze and Silver Awards this year and each one of them should be incredibly proud. A special mention goes to Matis Delaye, who proudly completed his Gold Award which is a truly impressive accomplishment.

Earning a Gold Award takes years of consistent effort, commitment and perseverance. It requires pushing through tough weather, sore legs, logistical puzzles, and countless other challenges. Matis tackled every challenge with determination, enthusiasm and a clear sense of purpose. He has set a brilliant example for others working through the Award and we hope his achievement inspires many more to complete their Gold Award. Congratulations, Matis!

Come rain or shine (or both), we are looking forward to doing it all again next year.

Quelle année ! Elle s'est achevée en juin dernier par une magnifique randonnée le long d'une partie du Tour du Mont Blanc. Les groupes Silver et Gold ont terminé l'année en beauté, entourés de montagnes, d'air frais et de pieds légèrement endoloris.

Le groupe Gold, qui s'est bien soudé au fil du temps, s'est lancé fin août dans leur expédition de qualification, relevant le défi avec résilience, esprit d'équipe et bonne humeur.

Peu après, en septembre, de nouveaux participants ont rejoint le programme tandis que d'autres ont poursuivi leurs aventures à des niveaux plus élevés. À partir de ce moment-là, tout s'est enchaîné : renforcement de l'esprit d'équipe, séances d'acquisition de compétences, expériences culinaires et jeux. A un moment donné, les burritos du petit-déjeuner ont connu un succès inattendu.

En mai, toute cette préparation a porté ses fruits pendant les excursions aux Paccots, au Creux du Van et dans les superbes Gorges de l'Areuse. Tout le monde a mis ses compétences à l'épreuve, en randonnant, en naviguant, en campant et en travaillant ensemble en pleine nature.

De nombreux participants ont obtenu leur médaille de bronze et d'argent cette année et chacun d'entre eux peut en être très fier. Une mention spéciale va à Matis Delaye, qui a fièrement obtenu sa médaille d'or, ce qui est vraiment impressionnant.

L'obtention d'une médaille d'or exige des années d'efforts constants, d'engagement et de persévérance. Il faut affronter des conditions météorologiques difficiles, des jambes douloureuses, des casse-tête logistiques et d'innombrables autres défis.Matis a relevé chaque défi avec détermination, enthousiasme et un sens aigu de l'objectif. Il a donné un brillant exemple aux autres participants et nousespérons que sa réussite en incitera beaucoup d'autres à obtenir leur médaille d'or.

At the end of September, we held our annual Cancer Appeal, featuring a coffee morning for parents and an exciting bake-off competition for MYP1 & 2 students. Following the judging, secondary students had the opportunity to purchase the cakes, contributing to an impressive fundraising effort.

The total raised from the coffee morning and bake sale was CHF 2109.05

In addition, also wanting to contribute, our primary student council participated by selling pink bracelets to recognize Pinktober, raising CHF 1203.70. The overall total raised for our Cancer charities was CHF 3312.75 This amount was shared between Macmillan in the UK and the Impact Cancer Foundation in Switzerland.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone involved for making this event such a success!

À la fin du mois de septembre, nous avons organisé notre campagne annuelle de lutte contre le cancer, avec une matinée café pour les parents et un concours de pâtisserie pour les élèves de PEI1 et 2.

Après la délibération, les élèves du secondaire ont eu la possibilité d’acheter les gâteaux, contribuant ainsi à une impressionnante collecte de fonds.

Le total des fonds récoltés lors de la matinée café et de la vente de gâteaux s’élève à CHF 2109,05

De plus, notre conseil des élèves du primaire, désireux de contribuer lui aussi, a participé en vendant des bracelets roses à l’occasion de Pinktober, ce qui a permis de récolter CHF 1203,70

Le montant total récolté pour nos associations de lutte contre le cancer s’est élevé à CHF 3312.75.

The Parent-Teacher Association is proud to look back on the school year. From every event and fundraiser to our friendly coffee mornings, our vibrant international school has once again shown just how much we can achieve when we come together.

The year began with heartfelt initiatives to welcome new families into the Haut-Lac community.

Our Newcomers’ Orientation and the always-popular “Welcome Back Apéro” set the tone for a warm and inclusive year. Monthly coffee mornings continued throughout the terms, offering an informal space for parents - both new and returning - to meet and share experiences.

Autumn brought spooky fun with our much-loved Trunk or Treat celebration. Creative costumes, decorated car trunks, and sweet surprises delighted children and parents alike, creating wonderful memories under a crisp October sky.

In November, we turned up the glamour at the Gala Dinner at the Montreux Palace. It was an unforgettable evening of elegance, laughter, and dancing, celebrating the strength of our school’s community spirit.

Winter was filled with excitement as we supported our students at the Haut-Lac Ski Races in Morgins. Parents helped energize the days with delicious home-baked treats.

Our Second-hand Uniform Sales were another successful initiative, helping both the environment and PTA finances.

Pi Day was also marked with mathematical fun (and plenty of cookies!) to celebrate learning in a deliciously engaging way.

We continued to host much-anticipated events like the Primary Movie Night, and the Easter Egg Hunt, which filled the school grounds with joy and chocolate just ahead of Spring Break. Students across the primary years also embraced wacky fun during Crazy Hair Day and danced their hearts out in our Dance-a-Thon fundraiser.

For our older students, the MYP1-2 Quiz and Disco Night made a lively return - a high-energy evening that everyone enjoyed. This year, the PTA supported the Eco-Schools Project by assisting at the Primary Aqua Day, where we ran the obstacle course and provided delicious snacks for the students.

At the time of writing, we are preparing one of our most cherished annual events: the PTA Staff Appreciation Lunch, where we honour the incredible dedication of our teachers and staff who give so much to our children every day.

We are deeply grateful to every volunteer, class rep, and committee member who contributed to the success of this year. Whether you baked, danced, decorated, dressed up as Santa, St. Nicholas, or the Easter Bunny, or simply came along to show your support - your involvement has been invaluable.

L'Association des Parents et Professeurs est fière de faire le bilan de l'année scolaire. De chaque événement et collecte de fonds à nos matinées café conviviales, notre école internationale dynamique a une fois de plus montré tout ce que nous pouvons accomplir lorsque nous nous rassemblons.

L'année a commencé par des initiatives sincères visant à accueillir de nouvelles familles dans la communauté Haut-Lac. L'orientation des Nouveaux Arrivants et “l'Apéro de la Rentrée”, toujours très appréciés, ont donné le ton d'une année chaleureuse et inclusive. Les matinées café mensuelles se sont poursuivies tout au long du trimestre, offrant un espace informel aux parents - nouveaux et anciens - pour se rencontrer et partager leurs expériences.

L'automne a apporté son lot de frissons avec notre très appréciée fête « Trunk or Treat ». Des costumes créatifs, des coffres de voiture décorés et des surprises sucrées ont ravi les enfants et les parents, créant de merveilleux souvenirs sous le ciel frais d'octobre.

En novembre, nous avons mis le cap sur le glamour lors du Dîner de Gala au Montreux Palace. Ce fut une soirée inoubliable d'élégance, de rires et de danses, célébrant la force de l'esprit communautaire de notre école.

L'hiver a été riche en émotions lorsque nous avons soutenu nos élèves lors des journées de Courses de Ski de Haut-Lac à Morgins. Les parents ont contribué à donner de l'énergie à ces journées en offrant de délicieuses gourmandises faites maison.

Les “Pauses Bretzel” ont fait leur grand retour, offrant une délicieuse pause en milieu de matinée tout en constituant une façon amusante de collecter des fonds. Les “Vendredis Fondue” étaient également de retour, apportant chaleur et convivialité pendant les mois froids, tout en soutenant le financement du Dîner Annuel du BI.

Nos Ventes d’Uniformes de Seconde Main ont été un autre succès, profitant à la fois à l’environnement et aux finances de l’APP.

La Journée de Pi a également été marquée par des activités mathématiques amusantes (et de nombreux biscuits !) afin de célébrer l'apprentissage d'une manière délicieusement attrayante.

Nous avons poursuivi l’organisation d’événements très attendus comme la Soirée Cinéma du Primaire et la Chasse aux Oeufs de Pâques, qui a rempli l’école de joie et de chocolats juste avant les vacances d’avril. Les élèves de tout le primaire ont aussi participé avec enthousiasme à des moments plein de fantaisie, comme la Journée des coiffures folles et ont dansé avec tout leur cœur à l'occasion de notre collecte de fonds Dance-a-Thon

Pour nos élèves plus âgés, le Quiz et la Soirée Disco du PEI1-2 ont fait leur retour - une soirée pleine d'énergie que tout le monde a appréciée. Cette année, l’APP a soutenu le projet Eco-Schools en participant à l'Aqua Day du Primaire, où nous avons organisé une course d'obstacles et fourni de délicieux en-cas aux élèves.

Au moment où nous rédigeons ces lignes, nous préparons l'un de nos événements annuels les plus appréciés : le Déjeuner d’Appréciation du Personnel de l'APP, où nous faisons honneur à l'incroyable dévouement de nos enseignants et du personnel qui donnent tant pour nos enfants chaque jour.

Nous sommes profondément reconnaissants à tous les bénévoles, représentants de classe et membres du comité qui ont contribué au succès de cette année. Que vous ayez cuisiné, dansé, décoré, ou étiez déguisé en Père Noël, en Saint-Nicolas ou en lapin de Pâques, ou que vous soyez simplement venus pour montrer votre soutien, votre participation a été inestimable.

Through tailored support, adapted timetables, and regular check-ins, student-athletes are empowered to manage their training schedules alongside academic responsibilities.

This year, our student-athletes have continued to inspire the school community through theirdedication, achievements, and sportsmanship. From early-morning training sessions to international competitions, they exemplify the values of hard work, balance, and perseverance.

Francisco Carvalhosa - Swimming

Francisco has demonstrated fantastic flexibility in managing his academic and swimming commitments this year. He recently competed in the Swiss Club Championships in Uster, where he had several top 5 finishes and achieved personal best times in 400m Freestyle. 100m Breaststroke, 50m Butterfly, 200m Medley, 400m Medley.

Michal Bobritsky - Rhythmic Gymnastics

Michal has had an outstanding rhythmic gymnastics season, consistently delivering top performances. She proudly secured first place All-Around (ball, clubs, hoop) at the Championnat Vaudois in her age group. This adds to her first place AllAround at the First Qualification competition, a key step towards the Swiss Championship. She recently earned second overall at the Very-Nice competition (ball, clubs, ribbon) and honed her skills at an international Master class.

Or Shatil - Chess

This has been a mesmerising year for Or, with her Elo rating continuing to climb. She is now ranked 1st in Europe for U17 girls and 2nd in the world for U15 girls. Along the way, Or earned all three norms for the Woman International Master title and recently made her debut representing the Swiss national team on the international stage.

Le Programme Élèves-Athlètes de Haut-Lac est notre engagement à former des individus bien équilibrés et performants. Conçu pour soutenir les étudiants qui concourent aux niveaux régional, national et international dans un large éventail de sports, le programme offre un environnement structuré mais flexible qui concilie l'ambition sportive et l'excellence académique.

Grâce à un soutien sur mesure, à des horaires adaptés et à des contrôles réguliers, les étudiants-athlètes sont en mesure de gérer leurs horaires d'entraînement en même temps que leurs responsabilités académiques.

Cette année, nos étudiants-athlètes ont continué à inspirer la communauté scolaire par leur dévouement, leurs réalisations et leur esprit sportif. Des séances d'entraînement matinales aux compétitions internationales, ils incarnent les valeurs du travail, de l'équilibre et de la persévérance.

Nous sommes incroyablement fiers de tous nos élèves-athlètes et de leur parcours. Cette année a été marquée par un grand nombre de réussites, dont voici une petite sélection.

Anahie Lohner Hutzli - Golf

Anahie a fait preuve d’un réel dévouement cette année, en conciliant la préparation de ses évaluations en ligne avec un agenda de compétitions bien rempli. Elle a participé à des épreuves internationales beaucoup plus difficiles. Anahie exprime ouvertement sa gratitude pour le soutien qu’elle reçoit du programme Élèves-Athlètes. Elle s’est qualifiée pour de nombreux tournois internationaux cette année et est fière de faire partie de l’équipe nationale suisse U18 pour la deuxième année consécutive.

Rafael se prépare pour une saison prometteuse, qui a commencé par un bon classement dans l’épreuve des 110 cm à Marsens en mai dernier. Il a également décroché une impressionnante 3ème place lors d’une compétition internationale à Gorla Minore en février. Grâce à ses progrès constants et une confiance grandissante, Rafael aborde avec optimisme un été prometteur sur le circuit de saut d’obstacles.

Victoria Geljberg-Hansen – Ski Alpin

L’année de Victoria a été riche en compétitions de haut niveau, notamment les Championnats Nationaux Juniors à Val d’Isère et les Championnats danois en Norvège.

Sa participation au Festival Olympique de la Jeunesse Européenne en Géorgie a été un moment fort.

Cet événement a ravivé sa passion pour le ski alpin et mis en lumière son incroyable talent. Nous sommes très fiers de tout ce qu’elle a accompli sur les pistes cette année !

A Year of Primary & Infant PE & Sport at Haut-Lac: Celebrating Growth, Teamwork, and Fun

What a year it’s been for the primary and infant children of Haut-Lac in PE and Sports! From the moment they hit the field, pool and courts, to the final exciting moments of Sports Day, it’s been a busy, exciting, and fulfilling year for everyone involved. It has been a joy to see the kids not only develop their physical abilities but also grow socially and emotionally, with lessons that go beyond just the game.

Whether it was through football, volleyball, basketball, gymnastics, swimming or athletic events, the children learned to value the process just as much as the outcome. Skills like teamwork, cooperation and perseverance have been at the heart of every lesson. Watching the kids come together to support one another, whether in a relay race or a friendly match has been one of the highlights of the year.

And it wasn’t just about learning new skills in PE. The children also had the chance to represent their houses in various sporting activities, and as a school, we saw Haut-Lac’s teams shine in numerous competitions, fixtures and tournaments across different sports. The sense of pride, determination and sportsmanship

displayed by every student was truly inspiring. One of the most exciting parts of the year was the ski term. From beginners to more experienced skiers, the children tackled new slopes and developed their skills in Morgins. For many, this led to the incredible opportunity to represent Haut-Lac in ski races, an experience that will surely stick with them for years to come.

The year wrapped up with Sports Day, and what a way to end the academic year! The energy, excitement and pure joy that filled the air were unforgettable. Watching every child give their best effort and celebrate one another’s success was a perfect reminder of the power of physical education and sport.

Looking back, it's clear that this year was about so much more than just playing games. The lessons learned on teamwork, resilience and growth will carry with the children far beyond the sports field. It’s been an absolute pleasure to watch them embrace the challenges and joys of physical education, and we can’t wait to see what next year brings!

Une année de sport et d'éducation physique en Primaire et en Enfantine à Haut-Lac : Célébrer la Progression, le Travail d'Equipe et le Plaisir

Quelle année cela a été pour les enfants du primaire et de l’enfantine de Haut-Lac dans le domaine de l'éducation physique et du sport ! Depuis l’instant où ils sont entrés sur le terrain, dans la piscine et sur les courts, jusqu'aux derniers moments excitants de la journée des sports, l'année a été bien remplie, passionnante et enrichissante pour tous ceux qui y ont participé. C'est une joie de voir les enfants non seulement développer leurs capacités physiques, mais aussi s'épanouir socialement et émotionnellement, avec des leçons qui vont au-delà du simple jeu.

Qu'il s'agisse de football, de volley-ball, de basket-ball, de gymnastique, de natation ou d'événements sportifs, les enfants ont appris à apprécier le processus autant que le résultat. Des compétences telles que le travail d'équipe, la coopération et la persévérance ont été au cœur de chaque leçon. Voir les enfants s'unir pour se soutenir les uns les autres, que ce soit lors d'une course de relais ou d'un match amical, a été l'un des moments les plus forts de l'année.

Et il ne s'agissait pas seulement d'acquérir de nouvelles compétences en éducation physique. Les enfants ont également eu la chance de représenter leur maison dans diverses activités sportives et, en tant qu'école, nous avons vu les équipes Haut-Lac briller dans de

nombreuses compétitions, rencontres et tournois dans différents sports. Le sentiment de fierté, la détermination et l'esprit sportif affichés par chaque élève ont été une véritable source d'inspiration.

Le trimestre de ski a été l'un des moments les plus passionnants de l'année. Des débutants aux skieurs plus expérimentés, les enfants se sont attaqués à de nouvelles pistes et ont développé leurs compétences à Morgins. Pour beaucoup d'entre eux, cela s'est traduit par l'opportunité incroyable de représenter HautLac lors de courses de ski, une expérience qui restera certainement gravée dans leur mémoire pour les années à venir.

L'année s'est achevée par la journée des sports, et quelle belle façon de terminer l'année scolaire ! L'énergie, l'excitation et la joie pure qui régnaient dans l'air sont inoubliables. Le fait de voir chaque enfant donner le meilleur de lui-même et célébrer les succès des autres nous a parfaitement rappelé le pouvoir de l'éducation physique et du sport.

Avec le recul, il est clair que cette année a été bien plus qu’un moment de jeu. Les leçons apprises sur le travail d'équipe, la résilience et la progression accompagneront les enfants bien au-delà du terrain de sport. Ce fut un plaisir absolu de les voir relever les défis et profiter des joies de l'éducation physique, et nous sommes impatients de voir ce que l'année prochaine nous réserve !

An action-packed year for secondary sport at Haut-Lac

Our students have been tremendous once again across inter-school competitions this year! Football, basketball, volleyball, and skiing have been real standout successes. But beyond the wins, what’s been just as impressive is their sportsmanship and conduct whenever we travel for events.

Inside school, the competition has continued, with students battling it out for the IH title in football, basketball, skiing, badminton, hockey and volleyball. As we wrap up an incredible year, we’re looking forward to more action in striking & fielding and athletics. Returning to Stade de Saussaz for the secondary athletics day is sure to be another highlight!

We’re lucky to work with such enthusiastic students who bring their energy and dedication to every lesson, club, and competition. It’s been a pleasure to teach them. Well done to everyone for their hard work—keep enjoying sport and all the rewards that come with it! Thanks also to staff and parents for your support of these opportunities for our students.

Une année sportive bien remplie à Haut-Lac (Secondaire)

Cette année encore, nos élèves ont été extraordinaires lors des compétitions inter-écoles ! Le football, le basket-ball, le volley-ball et le ski ont été de véritables succès. Mais au-delà des victoires, ce qui a été tout aussi impressionnant, c’est leur esprit sportif et leur comportement lorsque nous nous déplaçons pour des événements.

À l’intérieur de l’école, la compétition s’est poursuivie, les élèves se disputant le titre d’Inter-Maisons en football, basket-ball, ski, badminton, hockey et volleyball. Alors que nous terminons une année incroyable, nous attendons avec impatience de nouvelles actions dans les sports de frappe et de l’athlétisme. Le retour au Stade de Saussaz pour la journée d’athlétisme du secondaire sera certainement un autre moment fort !

Nous avons la chance de travailler avec des élèves aussi enthousiastes qui apportent leur énergie et leur dévouement à chaque leçon, club et compétition. Ce fut un plaisir de leur enseigner. Events Across Skiing, Badminton, Basketball, and Volleyball

In a school year packed with sporting events, we’re especially grateful for the support received in hosting several of our own competitions. Organizing these events is truly a whole-school effort, and we appreciate the dedication from all involved. Alongside the ever-popular Haut-Lac Ski Race, our sports facilities have proudly hosted a range of SGIS tournaments, including badminton, basketball, and volleyball, as well as the Under-16 MLS basketball competition.

Football continues to be one of most popular and most successful team sports at Haut-Lac, with hundreds of our students taking part in weekly after-school football clubs. Additionally, over 100 girls and boys from P2 to IB2 have represented Haut-Lac teams at inter-school tournaments and fixtures in the 2024/2025 season. With competition for places very high, our students have elevated their efforts to contribute to the collective success of our teams.

Our basketball teams remain a standout presence in inter-school competitions. We are privileged to have highly skilled players who are constantly refining their abilities through active participation in local clubs such as Blonay Basket and Vevey Riviera. A special acknowledgment goes to Coach Derrick Lang for his outstanding dedication to developing our senior boys team.

Teams have competed within MLS, SGIS and ADISR competitions. These challenging matchups continue to foster growth and development, with our students frequently being praised for their determination and exemplary sportsmanship. A standout achievement was the performance of P5-MYP1 students who were crowned Champions of the ADISR Minimes competition defeating many of the strongest basketball schools in Switzerland on their route to victory.

Nos équipes de basket-ball se distinguent dans les compétitions inter-écoles. Nous avons le privilège d'avoir des joueurs très compétents qui affinent constamment leurs capacités en participant activement à des clubs locaux tels que Blonay Basket et Vevey Riviera. Volleyball 2024-2025

It is with an incredible amount of pride that I will look back at what all our players have achieved throughout the last six years. I’d like to thank and congratulate each and every one of them for their effort, team spirit and joyful support of one another and I hope that they carry the skills and experiences that sport has to offer with them, throughout life’s challenges. I would also like to thank both sports staff and parents who are often the unsung heroes of sporting accomplishment. Without your support, sporting opportunities for our students, your children, would not be possible. I have no doubt that under your continued guidance, I’ll be hearing of even more success for Haut-Lac volleyball club in future…ALLEZ H-L!

This season our volleyball teams continued to develop in both number and stature, with the after-school club bursting at the seams with enthusiastic players. The year also saw an exciting development with the introduction of senior boys’ volleyball, culminating in a positive experience for a group of MYP3 boys who performed admirably in their first competitive opportunity against La Côte. Players in local clubs have thrived and are beginning to move quickly through the pyramid, with several girls now playing for advanced category teams. The highlight of the year was delivered by our category ‘B’ girls’ team, who earned the right to call themselves champions with victory in the recent MLS tournament at Le Regent. They produced a superb performance in the final and got over the line in a tie-break (final score 27-25; 18-25; 15-11). Over several years, this team in particular deserve special praise for their commitment, perseverance and inspirational approach both on and off the court.

C’est avec une incroyable fierté que je regarderai ce que tous nos joueurs ont accompli au cours des six dernières années. J’aimerais remercier et féliciter chacun d’entre eux pour leurs efforts, leur esprit d’équipe et le soutien joyeux qu’ils se sont apporté les uns aux autres, et j’espère qu’ils emporteront avec eux les compétences et les expériences que le sport a à offrir, tout au long des défis de la vie. Je voudrais également remercier l’équipe des sports et les parents, qui sont souvent les héros méconnus des exploits sportifs. Sans votre soutien, les opportunités sportives pour nos élèves, vos enfants, ne seraient pas possibles. Je n’ai aucun doute que grâce à votre implication, j’entendrai parler d’encore plus de succès pour le club de volley-ball de Haut-Lac à l’avenir... ALLEZ H-L !

Cette saison, nos équipes de volley ball ont continué à se développer en nombre et en taille, le club extra-scolaire débordant de joueurs enthousiastes. L’année a également vu un développement passionnant avec l’introduction du volley-ball pour les garçons seniors, qui a abouti à une expérience positive pour un groupe de garçons du PEI3 qui s’est admirablement comporté lors de leur première compétition contre La Côte. Les joueurs des clubs locaux ont progressé et commencent à gravir rapidement les échelons de la pyramide, plusieurs filles jouant désormais dans des équipes de catégorie avancée. Le point culminant de l’année a été atteint par notre équipe de filles de catégorie « B », qui a gagné le droit de s’appeler championnes en remportant le récent tournoi MLS au Regent. Elles ont réalisé une superbe performance en finale et se sont imposées au tie-break (score final 27-25 ; 18-25 ; 15-11). Depuis plusieurs années, cette équipe mérite des éloges particuliers pour son engagement, sa persévérance et son approche inspirante, tant sur le terrain qu’en dehors.

Golf

The afterschool Golf Club has really taken off this year, with an increasing number of students getting involved — whether they’re trying golf for the first time or looking to sharpen their skills. Sessions have included time on the practice green, putting green, and driving range, with students also having the opportunity to play on the school’s own par-3 course.

We are fortunate to have a strong partnership with Golf de Lavaux, who work closely with Haut-Lac to encourage student participation and growth in the sport. Their continued support has been instrumental in making the club a success.

Over the winter months, our afterschool TrackMan sessions proved especially popular. The indoor golfing setup provided a great way for students to keep practising their swing and enjoy the game, regardless of the weather. We look forward to seeing even more students on the course—and the simulator—in the coming year!

This year’s Golf Day proved to be a fantastic occasion and a highlight on the calendar. Although the morning began with grey skies, the weather gradually improved, setting the stage for an enjoyable and competitive afternoon on the course.

Haut-Lac gymnastics club is very popular with our students, and runs throughout the year with 3 groups: beginners, intermediate, and competition.

In the beginners group, our young gymnasts first learn floor work, bars, beam, vault, mini trampoline & rings.

In the intermediate group, the training is more challenging as they prepare for competitions.

The Competition group is made up of the best gymnasts from Haut Lac, who compete in 5 different levels, depending on their skills.

Haut-Lac school has more than 10 years of experience in competitive gymnastics, bringing home many medals from various competitions against other international schools.

Le club de gymnastique de Haut-Lac est très populaire auprès de nos élèves et fonctionne tout au long de l'année avec 3 groupes : débutants, intermédiaires et compétition.

Dans le groupe débutant, nos jeunes gymnastes apprennent d'abord le travail au sol, les barres, la poutre, le saut, le minitrampoline et les anneaux.

Dans le groupe intermédiaire, l'entraînement est plus stimulant car les jeunes se préparent aux compétitions.

Le groupe compétition est composé des meilleurs gymnastes de Haut Lac, qui concourent dans 5 niveaux différents, en fonction de leurs compétences.

L'école Haut-Lac a plus de 10 ans d'expérience en gymnastique de compétition et a remporté de nombreuses médailles lors de diverses compétitions contre d'autres écoles internationales.

A huge thank you once again to M3S Ski School for their incredible work with our students. This season brought us improved snow conditions and students continued to develop with great determination and fantastic conduct on the slopes.

The inter-house ski competition was closely contested, with some standout performances from our ski racers. Big congratulations to Bern who repeated their success from last year with another 1st place finish. Our beginners wasted no time leveling up, quickly tackling more challenging runs and our primary students had a great time skiing in Portes du Soleil this year.

None of this would be possible without the teamwork behind the scenes—the students’ cooperation, parents stepping in with taxi runs to the coaches, and staff from across the school lending their support. A big thanks to our parent skiers who joined the primary excursions. Thank you to everyone for helping make this another fantastic season on the slopes!

Journées de ski secondaire

Un grand merci encore à l'école de ski M3S pour son incroyable travail avec nos élèves. Cette saison nous a apporté de meilleures conditions d'enneigement et les élèves ont continué à progresser avec détermination et adopté un excellent comportement sur les pistes.

La compétition de ski inter-maisons a été très disputée, avec des performances remarquables de la part de nos coureurs. Toutes nos félicitations à Bern qui a réitéré son succès de l'année dernière en terminant à la première place. Nos débutants se sont rapidement mis au niveau, s'attaquant rapidement à des pistes plus difficiles et nos élèves du primaire ont eu beaucoup de plaisir à skier aux Portes du Soleil cette année.

Rien de tout cela ne serait possible sans le travail d'équipe en coulisses - la coopération des élèves, l'aide des parents pour les courses en taxi avec les entraîneurs, et le soutien du personnel de toute l'école. Un grand merci à nos parents skieurs qui se sont joints aux sorties primaires. Et merci à tous d’avoir contribué à rendre cette saison de ski fantastique !

In winter 2025, the Haut-Lac Ski Racing Team shone across multiple resorts throughout Switzerland. In total, 73 students from P2 to IB2 attended Wednesday and Saturday training sessions in Morgins with our superb M3S instructor team. Additionally, these students represented Haut-Lac across SGIS and Invitational races in Slalom and Giant Slalom disciplines. We were thrilled to welcome 13 new racers to the team this winter – a fantastic achievement for these students. Thank you to all racers, parents, ski instructors, staff and bus drivers for their support in the success of winter 2025.

On one hand, it’s hard to imagine it’s been 15 years since graduating from Haut-Lac. On the other hand it feels like a lifetime ago - and so much has happened since!

I’d love to share a little more about my journey since, and encourage any new connections if anything resonates or I can be of any help!

After graduating from Haut-Lac I spent 4 years studying chemistry (MSci) at Imperial College London. It was a journey of persistence and lots of hard work, yet still managed to make time for some fun & lifelong friendships. What was clear to me during my degree was that I missed collaborating with peers (it was a very individual-focused degree), and I yearned to be able to discuss what I was working on with a wider audience (vs only those who understood the depth of chemical reactions etc!).

With this revelation, I decided to apply to graduate programs in fast moving consumer goods companies, excited to work on brands that people recognise and challenges that require collaboration. I was extremely fortunate to join Mars (a confectionery business, who make Mars Bars, Snickers, Maltesers, Twix etc) in the UK.

For the last 11 years I have had the opportunity to grow as a person and leader at Mars - and it’s been the most rewarding experience. I’ve been fortunate to work across several functions: within our factories, demand planning, marketing, sustainability, logistics, supply strategy. I’ve absolutely loved the breadth I’ve gained, and have always felt very supported in my own development & career ambition.

Most recently I started in the role of Supply Chain Director for UK & Ireland, a role I could have only dreamed about when starting 11 years ago! It’s a big responsibility, and I’m loving the challenge of balancing people & functional leadership, and short & long term focus.

In parallel, I’ve also met my now husband Steve & 20 months ago we had our daughter Eliesa - our little ray of sunshine. We’re finding this age so much fun! Although juggling work and home isn’t always smooth sailing, I’m so proud to set an example for Eliesa: with the right mindset, anything is possible!

15 - 10 - 5 YEARS AFTER GRADUATION

D’une part, il est difficile d’imaginer que 15 ans se sont écoulés depuis que j’ai obtenu mon diplôme à Haut-Lac. D’autre part, j’ai l’impression que c’était il y a une éternité - et il s’est passé tellement de choses depuis !

J’aimerais partager un peu plus sur mon parcours depuis, et encourager toute nouvelle connexion si cela fait écho ou si je peux être d’une quelconque aide !

Après avoir obtenu mon diplôme à Haut-Lac, j’ai passé quatre ans à étudier la chimie (MSci) à l’Imperial College de Londres. Ce fut un long parcours de persévérance et de travail acharné, mais j’ai quand même réussi à prendre le temps de m’amuser et de nouer des amitiés pour la vie. Ce qui m’est apparu clairement au cours de mes études, c’est que la collaboration avec mes camarades me manquait (c’était un diplôme très individuel) et que j’aspirais à pouvoir discuter de ce sur quoi je travaillais avec un public plus large (plutôt qu’avec seulement ceux qui comprenaient toute la complexité des réactions chimiques, etc.)

Avec cette révélation, j’ai décidé de postuler à des programmes d’études supérieures dans des entreprises de biens de consommation à évolution rapide, enthousiaste à l’idée de travailler sur des marques que les gens connaissent et sur des défis qui nécessitent une collaboration. J’ai eu la chance de rejoindre Mars (une entreprise de confiserie qui fabrique des barres Mars, des Snickers, des Maltesers, des Twix, etc) au Royaume-Uni.

Au cours des 11 dernières années, j’ai eu l’occasion d’évoluer en tant que personne et en tant que dirigeante chez Mars, et cette expérience a été des plus gratifiantes. J’ai eu la chance de travailler dans plusieurs fonctions : dans nos usines, la planification de la demande, le marketing, le développement durable, la logistique, la stratégie d’approvisionnement. J’ai adoré absolument tout le chemin parcouru et je me suis toujours sentie soutenue dans mon développement et mon ambition de carrière.

Plus récemment, j’ai commencé à occuper le poste de directeur de la chaîne d’approvisionnement pour le Royaume-Uni et l’Irlande, un rôle dont je n’aurais pu que rêver lorsque j’ai commencé il y a 11 ans ! C’est une grande responsabilité et j’aime relever le défi qui consiste à trouver un équilibre entre la direction des personnes et la direction fonctionnelle, ainsi qu’entre les objectifs à court et à long terme.

Parallèlement, j’ai rencontré mon mari Steve et il y a 18 mois, nous avons eu notre fille Eliesa - notre petit rayon de soleil. Nous trouvons cet âge tellement amusant ! Bien qu’il ne soit pas toujours facile de jongler entre le travail et la maison, je suis fière de montrer l’exemple à Eliesa : avec le bon état d’esprit, tout est possible !

My Journey in Sports TV Production

I’ve been fortunate to turn my passion for film/TV and sports into a career. Since October 2024, I’ve been working as a TV Production and Distribution Coordinator at Volleyball World in Lausanne, Switzerland. It’s an exciting role where I help bring the action of global volleyball competitions to fans around the world, ensuring every match is captured with the energy and precision it deserves.

My interest in film was ignited by my IB Film teacher, Barend. His passion for the subject and guidance during my time studying IB Film gave me the confidence to pursue a creative career. That spark led me to study Film Production Technology at Birmingham City University from 2014 to 2017, where I developed the skills that would eventually take me into the world of TV production.

This journey didn’t happen overnight. I started in production roles that taught me the ropes. After university, I jumped into roles on projects like the very successful Netflix series, Formula 1: Drive to Survive, where I covered races worldwide, and BBC2’s Your Garden Made Perfect, building my expertise in production management and live-event coverage. I’ve since worked with organisations like UEFA on the 2024 Euros,

Mercury Studios, and Whisper, learning how to coordinate complex productions and bring the world of TV to your screens.

I wouldn’t be here without the foundation I built at school and university, and especially the network of friends and colleagues that I built along the way. To anyone considering a creative path, my advice is simple: embrace every opportunity, stay open minded, and never stop learning.

Mon parcours dans la production télévisuelle sportive

J’ai eu la chance de pouvoir transformer ma passion pour le cinéma, la télévision et le sport en une carrière. Depuis octobre 2024, je travaille en tant que coordinateur de la production et de la distribution TV à Volleyball World à Lausanne, en Suisse. C’est un poste passionnant où je contribue à faire vivre l’action des compétitions mondiales de volley-ball aux fans du monde entier, en veillant à ce que chaque match soit filmé avec l’énergie et la précision qu’il mérite.

Mon intérêt pour le cinéma a été éveillé par Barend, mon professeur de cinéma du BI. Sa passion pour le sujet et les conseils qu’il m’a prodigués pendant mes études m’ont donné la confiance nécessaire pour poursuivre une carrière créative. Cette étincelle m’a conduit à étudier la technologie de la production cinématographique à la Birmingham City University de 2014 à 2017, où j’ai développé les compétences qui m’ont permis d’entrer dans le monde de la production télévisuelle.

Ce parcours ne s’est pas fait du jour au lendemain. J’ai commencé par des fonctions de production qui m’ont permis d’apprendre les ficelles du métier.

Après l’université, j’ai pris part à des projets tels que la série Netflix à grand succès, Formula 1 : Drive to Survive, où j’ai couvert des courses dans le monde entier, et Your Garden Made Perfect, sur BBC2, ce qui m’a permis de développer mon expertise en matière de gestion de la production et de couverture d’événements en direct. Depuis, j’ai travaillé avec des organisations comme l’UEFA pour l’Euro 2024, Mercury Studios et Whisper, où j’ai appris à coordonner des productions complexes et à amener le monde de la télévision sur vos écrans.

Je n’en serais pas là sans les bases que j’ai construites à l’école et à l’université, et surtout sans le réseau d’amis et de collègues que j’ai constitué tout au long de mon parcours. À tous ceux qui envisagent de suivre une voie créative, mon conseil est simple : saisissez toutes les opportunités, restez ouverts d’esprit et n’arrêtez jamais d’apprendre.

Class of 2019

The feeling of finishing my last IB exam is as fresh in my mind as if it happened yesterday – it’s shocking to think that it was five years ago.

After graduating from Haut-Lac in 2019 I went to Cornell University to study molecular biology –I eventually found out that it wasn’t quite right for me and switched to a chemistry degree. By that time, I had conveniently taken enough molecular biology classes to graduate with both degrees.

During my degree I had the great pleasure of working in the department of biophysics for just over three years. My research was a fun mix of working in a cold room and controlling an X-ray source to “image” the structure of protein crystals. Working at the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source was rather exciting, and much more convenient than sending samples by post to the Advanced Photon Source in Chicago and having to control the beam remotely! This research finally culminated in a paper on OLD family nucleases which was published last year.

As much as fraternity parties had their time and place, I was rather relieved to be leaving them behind. After graduating in 2023 I went straight to the University of Cambridge where I started my PhD in Chemistry. I was doing polymer synthesis and rheology (which is the study of the mechanical properties of gel-like materials).

Even though Cambridge and its colleges are wonderful, the lab I joined in my first year was not a good fit. Thankfully, though, I was able to transfer to Prof. Axel Zeitler’s Terahertz Applications Group in the department of chemical engineering.

Having to change research groups was a rather hectic challenge. It forced me to reckon with what parts of research I enjoy, and what I really care about. I am now having an incredible time using lasers again, this time on the opposite side of the electromagnetic spectrum to x-rays. I never would have guessed that I’d end up studying physical chemistry and optical physics, especially having taken only SL chemistry and skipping physics entirely in the IB! Being a chemist in a group of physicists and chemical engineers has its benefits, but I’ve also had to learn a lot of new theory, take more courses, and painstakingly chew on a lot of basic maths.

Despite the challenge, I have learned that most people, most of the time, are just as confused as I am.

England has been wonderful so far, and I love being in Cambridge which is but a convenient train-ride away from London – it has made for a lot of Haut-Lac reunions with the class of 2019!

15 - 10 - 5 YEARS AFTER GRADUATION

Le souvenir de mon dernier examen du Baccalaréat International me paraît si récent –et pourtant, voilà plus de cinq ans qui se sont écoulés.

Après mes années à Haut-Lac, j’ai intégré l’Université de Cornell (2019-2023) pour y étudier la biologie moléculaire. J’ai vite découvert que cette voie ne me correspondait pas tout à fait et me suis réorientée vers un diplôme en chimie. Par chance, les cours suivis dans les deux disciplines m’ont permis de décrocher le diplôme en biologie moléculaire et en chimie.

Durant mes études, j’ai eu le grand privilège de travailler plus de trois ans dans le département de biophysique. Ce fut une belle expérience mêlant le froid des chambres réfrigérées au contrôle d’une source de rayons X servant à « photographier » l’architecture des cristaux protéiques. Travailler à la source synchrotron à Cornell était une aventure en soi. Ce travail a finalement abouti à la publication d’un article sur les nucléases de famille O.L.D., dont je suis très fière.

Si les soirées dans les fraternités avaient leur charme, je suis plutôt soulagée qu’elles soient derrière moi. Diplôme en poche, je suis partie directement pour l’Université de Cambridge où j’ai entamé un doctorat dans le département de chimie. Je me suis lancée dans un projet portant sur la synthèse de polymères et la rhéologie –l’étude des propriétés mécaniques des substances visqueuses.

Bien que charmée par Cambridge et ses collèges, le laboratoire où j’avais atterri ne me convenait pas du tout. Heureusement, j’ai pu être transférée au Terahertz Applications Group du professeur Axel Zeitler, dans le département de génie chimique.

Changer de groupe, et donc de recherche, fut un défi inattendu qui m’a forcé à réfléchir sur ce qui me plait dans la recherche et ce qui me fascine véritablement. Je crois enfin l’avoir trouvé dans les lasers – cette fois à l’autre bout du spectre électromagnétique des rayons X. Jamais je n’aurais imaginé que j’étudierai la chimie physique et l’optique alors que je n’ai suivi que des cours de chimie SL et aucune classe de physique au BI ! En me réorientant, j’ai dû suivre davantage de cours fondamentaux, et m’acharner sur des mathématiques dites « de base ». Changer de domaine aussi abruptement m’a fait apprendre qu’être perplexe et parfois perdue permet de se poser les bonnes questions, et que même les plus expérimentés s’interrogent parfois tout autant que les nouveaux entrants !

Je suis très heureuse à Cambridge, et je le suis d’autant plus que cette petite ville n’est qu’à une heure de Londres ! Cela m’a permis de multiplier les retrouvailles avec la promotion de 2019 !
