WELCOME TO THE HAUT-LAC BOARDING HOUSE

A WARM WELCOME TO THE HAUT-LAC BOARDING HOUSE

This guide is designed to steer you through your first days at the boarding house. It contains useful information on how we do things here, as well the names of the people who will welcome you into the Haut-Lac Boarding family.

The Haut-Lac Boarding House is a brand new, modern and VERY spacious house with lots of facilities and the MOST AMAZING views!

The Boarders are fun-loving, lively, entertaining, friendly and most of all kind and caring. They can’t wait to welcome you!

They love taking part in activities at the weekends, the more the better. They enjoy playing table-tennis in the evenings, our ‘home cinema’ with popcorn at the weekends or just hanging out together and relaxing. We do things together so that everyone gets to know each other well and starts to work together as a team. Each new Boarder will be assigned a Boarding buddy to whom they can go for a chat in the first few days when things are new, exciting and sometimes daunting!

It is often said that a boarding house is like a home away from home and this is certainly true of the Haut-Lac Boarding House.

The friends you make here will likely be close friends for life and the journey you are about to embark upon is exciting! We encourage you to try lots of new things, occasionally (or often!) get out of your comfort zone, play hard and work hard, and always do your best so you can be proud of what you have achieved.

We look forward to welcoming you soon,

George & Katie Carver Haut-Lac Boarding House Parents

MEET THE HOUSE PARENTS

“Being a houseparent is like having a huge extended family, which I love. Getting to know the boarders and supporting them is not only a great responsibility but also a privilege. Life in a boarding house is great fun, every day is full of surprises and no two days are the same!”

“I love being a houseparent – it is a great responsibility looking after the students in the house, but it is also a great privilege to play such an important role in their lives during their formative years. There is never a dull moment!”

BEFORE YOU ARRIVE

OFFICIAL MATTERS

Switzerland is a stickler for paperwork and procedures, so be sure to thoroughly read through visa and travel requirements for your country as early as possible.

Applying for a Swiss Visa

If you don’t have Swiss or EU citizenship, this section is for you. You and your parents are responsible for getting your visa in time for the start of term. We will, of course, provide you with all the information and assistance you need, but it is up to you to gather and submit your documents. We recommend starting as soon as you’ve enrolled, as visa applications can take up to 12 weeks to process and you won’t be able to start studying at Haut-Lac without one.

Let us know as soon as you’ve submitted your documents, so that we can follow up with the authorities, if necessary.

Quick link: https://www.sem.admin.ch/sem/en/home/themen.html

Getting a Swiss Residence Permit

Haut-Lac will get the ball rolling on your permit as soon as you arrive at school, and make sure it is updated every two years.

You will need to keep your permit on you at all times when travelling in Switzerland and/or in Europe on school trips or holidays.

Taking out Swiss medical insurance

There are two types of medical insurance in Switzerland:

• The basic insurance is compulsory and must be taken out within your first three months in Switzerland.

• The complementary insurance is optional and covers alternative medicines, glasses, hospital extras, etc. We can help you finalise your cover before you arrive, if you haven’t already sorted it. Feel free to check out the different options available here

Getting to Haut-Lac

Getting to Haut-Lac You and your parents are responsible for arranging your transport to and from Switzerland. Please refer to the school calendar when booking to ensure you arrive on campus the day before the New Student Induction Days. If needs be, the Haut-Lac Mobility Coordinator (nicole.harton@ hautlac.ch) can organise transfers from Geneva airport to Haut-Lac for you when you first come to school. Additional transfers to and from Geneva airport as well as Vevey train station can also be arranged, but will be at your cost. Once you are at the Boarding House, all transfer requests should go through the boarding parents who will pass them on to the Mobility Coordinator. Going forwardd we provide transport from the airport a day before terms starts (or a day before the orientation day) every term and on the last day of the term or a day after he last term every term.

The Boarding House

A SNAPSHOT OF LIFE AT THE HAUT-LAC BOARDING HOUSE

DOS & DONT’S

The Haut-Lac Boarding House will be your home during term-time, and where you will undoubtedly have a lot of fun with all the other Boarders.

It is normal, however, for us all to sometimes get a little tired or stressed or just want some peace and quiet, and therefore act a bit out of character. Here are a few things to remember to help maintain a positive atmosphere:

• Treat other people as you would like them to treat you. Be kind and considerate, put yourself in other people’s shoes. They might not all be your best friend, but it is important to be polite, whether it is your roommate, someone older or younger, or the staff who work in the house.

• If you are worried about something, please tell someone. Don’t keep it bottled up.

• Don’t talk about people behind their back. If you have an issue with someone, speak to them and try to solve it.

• Be honest with each other and the house staff. TRUST is key in a community like ours. Integrity is an important quality and makes a real difference to your relationships, not just here at Haut-Lac but also in life.

BOARDER WELL-BEING

Supporting the health and well-being of our Boarders is our topmost priority.

We aim to support each and every one of you, and expect you all to support each other too.

You can reach out to any of us - your house parents, your homeroom tutor, the MYP, DP or CP Leaders, the Deputy Secondary Head, or any of your teachers.

If you feel unable to talk to them though, you can always go to the school nurse or school counsellor.

Extra-curricular activities

If not, click here for a glimpse at last term’s choice.

Your parents will receive the updated clubs programme when registrations open a few weeks before the start of each term.

GENERAL INFO

ROOMS

The rooms are bright and airy twin rooms with views of either Lake Geneva or the mountains. Each room has an en-suite bathroom and a ‘conservatory balcony’.

There are two single rooms per floor, but these are reserved for IB1 & 2 students.

You will be allocated a room, normally with someone in the same year as you or, at most, one year above or below.

You may decorate your room with photos and LED light chains, etc. The pinboard above your desk is ideal for that!

COMMON ROOMS AND KITCHEN

We have a beautiful, HUGE common room with sofa areas, a pool table, a TV, lots of games and a huge wall for home cinema nights.

We also have a dining room with a student kitchen, where you can prepare snacks in the afternoons. We expect you to keep these rooms tidy and leave them as you would want to find them. Any mess made by you needs to be cleared up by you!

We also have a conservatory with ping-pong and table-football tables, as well as a terrace with outdoor furniture, a firepit, a BBQ and amazing views.

MEALS & FOOD

We eat breakfast, dinner and weekend brunch together at the boarding house, and lunch at school. You will find the weekly dinner menu in the dining room, and the lunch menu in the canteen at school.

You are expected to be on time for all meals, and not leave until everyone has finished. Healthy snacks are also available after school and fruit is there all day.

You may keep snacks in the student kitchen, which has a fridge, a microwave, a kettle, a coffee machine, a toaster and a nutri-bullet. Please don’t store food in your rooms.

WEEKEND LEAVE REQUESTS

You may occasionally want to spend the weekend away with family or friends. This is fine as long as your parents complete the ‘weekend request’ form by the Wednesday evening before the weekend in question. This needs to state when you are leaving and coming back, how you are getting to your destination, where you are staying and which adult is responsible for you over the weekend.

You may leave Friday after school and should return by 21:00 on Sunday at the latest.

HALF-TERM, CHRISTMAS AND HOLIDAYS

Parents and students are asked to respect term dates, avoiding early departures and late returns when possible.

They must complete the electronic “Holiday Form” with all departure and return information (incl. flight information and transfer requests).

If an early departure or late return is unavoidable, they should also inform the academic team of the absence via ManageBac.

Students are expected to arrive a day before school starts.

DUTIES

You will find that you are asked to perform certain duties at the boarding house, as would be the case at home.

These include the obvious, such as helping to clear away after breakfast and dinner and bringing any cups or glasses back downstairs to the kitchen as well other occasional duties everyone has to help with.

SIGNING IN AND OUT OF THE BOARDING HOUSE

It is really important we know who is at the boarding house and who isn’t. You must therefore always let us know when you are leaving for school, a club or on town leave as well as when you get back.

TOWN LEAVE

You usually get the chance to go down to Vevey or Montreux (our nearest towns) a couple of times per week, on a Wednesday afternoon and on some Saturdays.

If you are in IB1 or 2, you may occasionally sign out after school on the other days with permission of your parents. IB2 may sign out alone, but IB1 can only do so by twos. You can sign out with other Boarders or with day student friends.

SMOKING AND VAPING

Smoking and vaping is strictly prohibited both on the school campuses and at the boarding house. Boarders are also not allowed to smoke whilst in town or on activities. Sanctions, including suspension from school, will applied should anyone disregard this rule.

ALCOHOL

Alcohol may neither be kept or consumed on campus or at the boarding house. Boarders are also not allowed to consume alcohol in town or during weekend activities. Sanctions, including suspension from school, will applied should anyone disregard this rule.

ELECTRONICS

MYP1-5 students are asked to hand in their electronics (mobile phones, laptops, ipads) just before bedtime to ensure they get enough sleep to handle school and enjoy all the clubs and activities on offer. IB1&2 may keep their electronics.

Everyone may keep their mobile phone on Fridays and Saturdays as there is no school the next day. MYP4&5 may also keep their laptops.

If we have an early activity the next day, such as skiing for example, we may decide it’s better for you to hand in your electronics and get a good night’s sleep!

LAUNDRY

We also teach you important life skills at the boarding house, such doing laundry. Each boarder is allocated a day to do their washing. You can also have a go at doing your own ironing to add another life skill to your repertoire. Our house staff are, however, on hand to do it for you if you’d prefer.

POCKET MONEY

Some boarders have a bank card through their parents or decide to open a Swiss bank account.

Otherwise, your parents may deposit your pocket money with us to distribute to you on a weekly basis. We recommend maximum of CHF20 per week for MYP1-3 students, CHF30 per week for MYP4 students and CHF50 per week for MYP5 and IB1&2 students.

HEALTH & MEDICATION

You must not keep any medication in your room. If you have any, please hand it in to the house parents who will keep it safe in the boarding office for you.

If you are on regular medication, we must be informed. We will also keep it in the boarding office and administer it to you as prescribed. Students may, in certain circumstances, be allowed to keep regular medication in their room.

If you are unwell, you must inform us (or the school nurse if during the school day). We will then arrange for you to see a doctor if necessary.

If you need to rest, you will stay in your room at the boarding house or in the infirmary if you are sharing a room.

REMEMBER:

Always get involved in activities and challenge yourself! Try new things to get you out of your comfort zone! Lead by example and others will follow! Make the most of this amazing opportunity you have been given.
