Golf/17 Blackmar returns after shoulder injury for first championship since 2011 Carol Blackmar returned from a months-long injury layoff to capture another WGA Women’s Club Championship with a pair of 4&2 wins Saturday and Sunday. Blackmar won 15 straight titles from 1997-2011 and now has added her Sweet Sixteenth a dozen years after her last title. Blackmar defeated Kristie Robson on Saturday and Alisa Kennedy on Sunday. Kennedy beat Suzanne Priest 5&3 Saturday to make it to the final against Blackmar. “It’s been a while since I played competitively and since I won the championship so it was exciting to win again. Just to be on the course after messing up my shoulder was pretty cool,” she said. Blackmar stood on the 16th tee box both days 3-up. On Sunday, she hit 3-wood off the tee, leaving her a 9-iron from

103 yards and dropped it 15 feet from the flag. Her two putt closed out the match. Blackmar got up early in her match with Kennedy, who won a hole to make it closer, but Blackmar got it back to 3up heading into #16. The day before, she pushed her drive on #16 to the right. She had to hit a punch shot because of trees. It got on the green, but came off to the left. “I had a pretty challenging chip, the pin was back center,” she said, adding the chip had to go up a ridge and over, settling 8 feet from the hole. She made the putt to close the match. “I was hitting the ball better against Kristie, but my short game failed me,” Please see next page

In the Net Match, Paige Sciantarelli, right, defeated Pam Morin, 3 & 1.

In Sunday’s Consolation Match, Suzanne Priest, right, defeated Kristie Robson 1 up in 19 holes.

Blackmar said her husband Phil gave her some tips on the driving range before the tournament. “He’s such a good teacher,” she said of her husband, who captured five professional wins on the PGA and Champions tours. After her win, Blackmar said her husband told her, “now we can hit the short-game area and work on your chipping.” Blackmar is also happy to see the club’s WGA growing. “It’s nice to see women on the golf course, learning to play and feeling comfortable,” she said.

New member Suzanne Priest wins Women’s Senior title Three days after she won the Colsolation Match of the WGA Women’s Club Championship, Suzanne Priest won her first CCCC title, capturing the Women’s Senior Club Championship Wednesday. Priest, Paige Sciantarelli and Nancy Rubinstein battled strong winds during Tuesday’s first round and shot better scores on Wednesday. “The winds were lighter and we were hitting Suzanne Priest and championship trophy. the ball great,” Priest said. She finished the final hole on the final round splitting the fairway with a 250-yard drive, getting on the 18th green in regulation and two-putting for a par. “It was a great way to finish on a tricky hole,” she said. “Paige, Nancy and I really had a good time playing together. We encouraged each other,” Priest added. She’s only been a member a few months and was very excited to win her first Club title. Priest complimented Pros Brent and Kellsey and the WGA’s Alisa Kennedy and Carol Blackmar for “making it all happen.” From left, Nancy Rubinstein, Suzanne Priest, Paige Sciantarelli
