Manning,Robertssurvive ShootouttowinBurkeCup 12/Golf

Ten years ago, Jack Manning and grandson Cade Roberts won their Burke Cup flight – advancing to the Shootout –then eliminated on the first hole.

Sunday, Manning and Roberts watched nine other teams get eliminated over six holes leaving them Burke Cup champs.

For Manning, a Club member for about 35 years, winning the prestigious Burke Cup with his grandson was special.

“I can’t even put it into words,” said the 75-year-old, about winning with his now-27-year-old grandson alongside.

“It’s a very special, special feeling,” he said.

The pair won the Sailfish (fifth) Flight by a match play point over John and Pat Hatridge.

“It wasn’t until everyone concluded play,” the pair knew they won, said Manning. “We went in and waited, and it became evident we won by one.”

On the first playoff hole – #10 –Manning teed off as the alternate shot Shootout began. Because of his age, he could use the white tees.

People drove up #10 and surrounded the green during the first hole of the Burke Cup Shootout

They bogeyed #10 and #11, but advanced as other teams had higher scores. “We kept the ball in play,” he said.

Half the ten teams were eliminated after #10 and #11 as the remaining five teams turned back toward home on #16, which Manning and Roberts parred.

Three teams were left going to #17.

A par by Craig Kondoff and Mitchell Thompson advanced them to #18. Manning and Roberts tied Robert DeLeon and Mike Iglinski on #17, but advanced after a chip off.

“I thought we lost the chip off, but (Pro) Brent measured it and we won,” Manning said.

After the final two teams tied on #18, they played it again. Kondoff and Thompson hit a ball out of bounds. Manning and Roberts won the hole and the top prize.

Manning said he and Roberts probably played their best golf during the playoff.

It was Manning’s first Burke Cup win over the years after playing in the tournament a little more than a half-dozen times.

He’s won golf tournaments before, but winning the Burke Cup with his grandson is awesome.

“It feels great to win. I’ve been playing golf since I’ve 12 years old and this takes the cake. Top of the list,” Manning said of his golf experiences.
