President’s Note Dear Members,

Janet Lee President, Malaysian Interior Industry Partners Association

We have closed a book on 2018. It has been an unpredictable year in terms of world events, but even more so for Malaysians. We had participated in Malaysia’s 14th general election and witnessed a historic change of government after more than six decades of independence. Although the change was a first in our history, the transition of power was smooth. This bodes well for our economy and to ensure that Malaysian businesses will continue to flourish. As for MIIP and the fit-out industry, changes have been incrementally positive. MIIP is also actively engaging with the relevant government agencies via fruitful visits and dialogues. One of the milestones for the association in 2018 was the third MIIP Awards. Held at Hilton KL, the biennial celebration was themed “Magical Moments”. A total of 27 awards across four categories were given to recipients who carried out their duties with great integrity, accountability, responsibility and professionalism levels that surpassed their peers. The winners were chosen by a panel of prominent adjudicators in the industry that went through a tedious judging process. Another interesting event we had was the trade mission trip to Macau that was attended by some 20 members. We had met our counterparts to explore future business opportunities. MIIP events included informative visits to suppliers, partners and institutions. Host companies were given the chance to introduce their products and services as well as a tour of their facilities. In addition, this encourages networking among industry partners. Among the companies MIIP visited were Elyza Home, Nitto Denko, Nagase Products, Mamorim, Dynamic Furniture Industries, WISDEC, MTIB and Hunter Douglas. Meanwhile, industry talks are important for MIIP members too. In August, we held a talk on “Handling Delay & Prolongation Cost Claims” presented by by Lam Wai Loon and Chung Sheuan Seen. And in December, we hosted CIDB e-Construct Services Sdn Bhd’s General Manager Mohammad Farid A. Hamid, who gave a presentation on the benefits of BIM. During the 2018 Chinese New Year, MIIP members organised a donation drive for the En Yuan Old Folks Home to bring some festive cheer to its residents and provide essential goods. To further enhance good relationships among MIIP members, we organised sporting tournaments throughout the year. Bowling, badminton and ping pong were the chosen sports and members had a great time showing of their skills. Our year end party also served as a venue for networking among members. To-date, MIIP has 80 members and I hope to achieve a membership of 100 by the end of 2019. As the President, I hope we will continue our good work and support for the Association. There are a lot of activities and events planned for the year and I hope to see more new faces joining us. I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a blessed New Year and a prosperous Chinese New Year.

Work Spirit There is no greater weapon in a company’s arsenal than a great team and it is no different at Can.I.

ehind every great product is a great team. Like soccer teammates passing to one another to find the perfect shot, each teammate plays a specific, meaningful role. As Can.I Interior Fit-Out Sdn Bhd Executive Director, U Mun Liang puts it, “teamwork is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results.” “It is no different in a construction company like ours. Several groups generally make up a team, such as the architect and engineering team, the accounts and admin, and the projects and safety. All team members share the common goal of wanting to complete the project, but they may also have conflicting priorities. Aligning these interests and completing a project on time and on budget requires teamwork from all participants,” U says. When a team develops a culture based on humility, hard work, excellence and learning, its members become able to translate both

their victories and their failures into inputs for continuous improvement. Additionally, each member starts to develop unique, specialized skills that increase the team’s inventory of competitive advantages. Furthermore, they periodically reinvent themselves and the way they work, thus quickly adapting to, and sometimes generating, industry trends. All this allows them to achieve extraordinary results with increased frequency, thus becoming an extraordinary team. Prevalent at Can.I, the company prides itself in valuing its staff, their skills and their growth. “We recognize our primary asset is people. To be successful, Can.I must be a rewarding place to work. We provide opportunity and encouragement to help our people reach their potential. We work with our clients as a team. Mutual respect provides the foundation for our success,” U explains.

TEAM GOALS Teamwork requires that people manage

their egos, develop humility, communicate effectively, resolve conflicts and, above all, commit to one another and to a common goal. According to Project Director, Amirul Mukminin, one of the first steps in building an effective team is to define the goals of the project. In construction, this can involve a preconstruction meeting or a kick-off meeting. “Everyone should agree on the objectives, while goals should be measurable and specific. For example, when setting the project schedule, everyone should agree on providing fast replies to requests for information, so the builder does not lose any time.” He believes companies like Can.I that encourage open, honest communication and foster employee interaction are in a better position to have good teamwork among employees.

ESTABLISHING TRUST One key to working effectively as a team is for team members to respect and trust each other. In construction, people from

different professions, such as contracting and architecture, must cooperate closely and it may be difficult for these people to understand each other’s approaches to a problem. Contracts Manager, Nadia, believes colleagues should spend time getting to know each other, learning a bit about the work they each do. This can help team members trust that the other people on the team know their jobs well and can accomplish what they set out to do. “We work as a team and often share our experiences and knowledge as each staff would be experienced in handling different types of projects. We also come from different backgrounds – some graduated in the interior design field, some in the quantity surveying field and some even studied economics. The difference in backgrounds makes us a more cohesive team as we would be able to compare and analyse each on-going project in varying views.

RESPONSIBILITIES When working as a team, each member has

different duties and responsibilities. To function effectively, team members must understand these, as well as the duties and responsibilities of the other team members. Accounts Manager, Azean, trusts that teamwork enables her to accomplish tasks faster and more efficiently than tackling projects individually. “Cooperating together on various tasks reduces workloads for all employees by enabling them to share responsibilities or ideas. Teamwork also reduces the work pressure on every worker, which allows us to be thorough in completing of the assigned roles,” she says. “In sharing ideas or responsibilities, every employee should have a role that suits his specialization. We should also consider employees’ levels of interest in the project at hand, which positively influences the efficiency or speed of their output in accomplishing the task.” Having said that, each team member should set out what he is responsible for.

This will prevent overlap of duties that can cost money and cause confusion.

RISK MANAGEMENT At the beginning of the project, team members should decide what risks there are and allocate responsibility for managing those risks. Teams should prioritize the risks, based on the likelihood and consequence of their occurring, and then develop a plan for mitigating or reducing each risk. Project Director, See Chee Hong believes that you will only gravitate towards a positive change if you learn how to take the risk. “At the end of the day, it’s all about setting goals that are achievable and realistic. It may seem like a challenge to achieve, but the outcome will always be worth the sweat and tears. So be a leader with a mission and vision statement in mind, and watch all your efforts slowly translate into success,” he adds.

Lian Ping Powers Into 2019 After winning a Platinum award from MIIP, Managing Director Lim Gao Leong shares his vision for the company.

stablished in 1961, Syarikat Lian Ping Enterprise Sdn Bhd started out as a furniture manufacturer and interior renovator. Over the many years, the company has expanded its customer base to cater to large scale hospitality and office projects. Its first major project was the renovation of the Hilton Hotel in 1972, and followed by projects in Shangri-La Hotel KL, The Regent Hotel KL, Micasa Hotel & Service Apartment KL and The Riverside Majestic Hotel in Kuching. In 1992, Lian Ping was awarded a project at Berjaya Beach Resort & Casino at Le Morne in Mauritius that had encouraged the company

to expand its business outside Malaysia. Today, Lian Ping employs more than 150 people.

CHANGING TIMES Despite Lian Ping’s success, its Managing Director Lim Gao Leong said the company has to evolve to stay competitive. Last year, Lian Ping picked up an MIIP Platinum Award in the Interior Fit-Out Hospitality Category for its work in the Four Seasons Place Kuala Lumpur. Lim started out in the company more than 25 years ago and shared his vision for the company. “As you can see, our company name evokes a retro vibe. While we don’t want to change it officially, we are undergoing a

rebranding exercise that will gives us a modern look and feel. While this does not affect our expertise and services, I hope it will help us when tendering for projects overseas. We also have an ISO 9000 certification since 2009. “In addition, we are positioning ourselves as a contract management company, allowing us to help clients meet deadlines, provide high quality products and services as well as professional execution and planning.”

WINNING WORK The MIIP Award is not Lian Ping’s first industry recognition. Lim shared his thoughts the Four Seasons Place project. The company was tasked with completing the suites and,

more importantly, the Presidential Suite. The company was tasked with completing the suites and, more importantly, the Presidential Suite. Located next to the Petronas Twin Towers, the Four Seasons Place’s residents enjoy services such as concierge, 24-hour security, valet parking and more, as well as a selection of à la carte additions, from housekeeping and butler services, to in-residence dining and event catering. “One of the main challenges in this project was accommodating the city centre’s logistical restrictions. As the interior designs and material demands came from international firms, our responsibility is to ensure great execution,” said Lim.

LABOUR SHORTAGE Lim said a common challenge in the industry is the lack of skilled workforce. “I feel that the industry is still in need of skilled workers in carpentry, marble installation, ceilings and so on. The number of skilled workers are dwindling as less and less people are keen to take on such jobs. “In turn, the industry has simplified some of the work processes in those fields. Instead of

Its look and feel are inspired by colonial stylings, complementing its unique concierge concept. Currently, Lian Ping has completed work on seven floors, with about 11 more to go. • OSK Property’s Windmill Upon Hills in Genting Permai One of Lian Ping’s on-going projects is the Windmill Upon Hills. a complete wood panelling or carved elements, we now use them as accents or highlights. “It also helps to give the space a light and modern feel. We also compensate with other materials such as textured wallpapers. With these new materials and solutions, the industry is able to narrow the skills gap.”

OVERSEAS EXPANSION Lim said: “Majority of our projects are in

Malaysia but we are actively looking to expand our services to other countries.” He added that there are two challenges that comes with it. “One is the fluctuating currency exchange rate. Some contracts have locked in rates while others might have floating ones. Secondly, labour supply and laws in some countries. Countries such as Australia has strong union laws, which we need to be familiar with. “With that said, the fi t-out industry in Malaysia is still going well. Aside from new buildings, there are also refurbishment projects for existing buildings. The recovering economy would probably affect the scale of work,” Lim said.

he Hilton Kuala Lumpur was abuzz with excitement on 12 October 2018 when the best of the best of the Malaysian Interior Industry Partners got together to recognise and celebrate the achievements of 27 of their industry comrades. Held biennially, the event was themed ‘Magical Moments’ and indeed it was, for the proud winners clutching their shiny trophies. Dressed to the nine, industry players were all smiles throughout the night that honoured players’ outstanding achievements and contributions from different fields such as fit-out constructions, furniture, furnishing & fittings, wall covering and floor finishes. The nominees were assessed based on a few criteria which included Quality & Workmanship, Complexity of Work, Timely Completion, Overall Judges Impression and Product Functionality. A total of 27 awards across 4 categories were given to recipients who carried out their duties with great integrity, accountability, responsibility and professionalism levels that surpassed their peers. The winners were chosen by a panel of prominent adjudicators in the industry that went through a tedious judging process. In her opening address, Janet Lee, President of MIIP said the awards are given to visionaries and great leaders that have set their mark and established themselves in the industry for many years. “We are very excited to organize this prestigious awards ceremony

to acknowledge their achievement and success as well as to inspire younger generations to follow the footsteps of their leaders. We want to recognise those who demonstrate the highest level of achievement within the various fields that translate into quality built interior environment benefiting the social, physical and cultural structure,” stated Janet Lee. Creating a revenue of over RM30 billion in 2017/2018, Janet also said that MIIP Awards created a platform to uplift the morale of industry leaders who continually challenge themselves to create and produce work that sets precedent year after year. She believes that with the right support like these MIIP Awards, the industry will reap the recognition it so rightfully deserves. “This celebration is centred on its various industry achievements and prominent status in the industry. We want to provide a platform for industry players to be recognised and at the same time expanding their portfolio for business purposes. The industry has shown strong growth and I am confident that with its high rate of expansion, it will strengthen our economic infrastructure for years to come,” said Organising Chairperson, Dato’ Winnie Lim. The MIIP committee members would like to take this opportunity to thank all the 2018 award winners and look forward to recognising even more industry partners in 2020!
